If you are planning to eat here, keep in mind it is a 2-2.5 hour experience. The First half hour is sipping water waiting to place you drink order. Second half hour drinking your bottle of wine. Third half hour is placing your order and getting the salad, the forth is the entree. Add additional time for dessert. At no time did anyone ask how It was going, no water refills. A hidden gem tucked in the rear of a hotel and overlooking a tranquil Atlantic beach. Chef Freda prepared fabulous courses with Haitian, French, Italian, and American flair. We were recommended to come here by a local but we were a little disappointed with it overall. We had reservations and requested outside but we were sat inside. Our server was the bartender as well, he seemed very overwhelmed as you could see the sweat dripping from his face. He was too busy to spend time answering questions about the menu. We had the mussels and clams as an appetizer that were great. The bread and bruschetta they sent out to the table was amazing but we were a little disappointed with our entrees. I had the seafood medley with flamingo sauce. Noodle and sauce were great but all the seafood seemed to be boiled with no seasoning. My fiancée had the rack of lambs. They were cooked well but the mint sauce seemed off. The chef was very nice and you could tell she cared but the place seemed unorganized with everyone running around. We booked a reservation for New Year's Eve this past year. The wait staff was amazing as well as the choices of the stuffed hawgfish, duck and lamb chops. The desserts were also delicious including cheesecake and a kind of key lime moose. It added a nice touch as the chef came out to chat with us at the end of the meal. I don't normally review restaurants, but I felt like I really needed to this time. We went here with some good friends. I made reservations a few weeks ahead of time. We drove for an hour one way to get here and arrived on time. We checked in. Then 4 other groups that came after us we seated before we were. We waited at least 20 minutes for our table. Our table was available but they had not bussed it. They chose to take the time to seat 12 other guests before they even started to clean our table. When we finally got seated, they waiter proceeded to fill the water glasses and spill water all over the table. We ordered and the waiter finally brought the salads but totally forgot my French Onion soup. We asked for the drink /wine list again but he never brought it so I had to go find one myself. The main courses came next but he brought the side dishes about 15 minutes later. On a bright note the food was very good. I was expecting a lot more for $100 per plate. $100 should buy more than rudeness. read more

I was hoping to eat dinner at the restaurant. But I did forget to make a reservation and asked the restaurant if they could fit me in. I explained that I was alone and just finished a 100 bike ride and am a recovering open heart surgery survivor. I was refused service and rudely reminded that it was a fine donning restaurant and could not fit me in all night. I had to walk a mile for food and when I got back to the hotel at 7 I noticed the restaurant was half empty. They obviously could have fit me in it was pure arrogance and lack of respect. I was very excited to eat here as it was highly recommend by a friend who is a total foodie. Let me start by saying they were very accommodating as far as seating. They were going to seat me an an outside high top stuck in the corner up against the railing, not acceptable, I asked for another table and the gave us a great seat that was much better. The service was great, kind, professional and attentive. My food experience was not good, the "garlic bread" seemed like stale mediocre at best bread warmed up without much garlic. My wife did better than i, her app of shrimp and scallop was excellent according to her, my onion soup arrived cold and unappealing. They did warm it up albeit in a microwave I'm sure. My wife had the daily catch and liked it. I'm a duck person and was told this was incredibly good, IT WAS NOT ! I like my duck crispy, this was petrified with some weird seasoning that tasted like a cross between dishwater and socks. The veggies were 2 tablespoons of horrid mashed potatoes with sliced carrots and 5 string beans all tasteless. I didn't eat anything, was cordial and left hungry. We did meet a wonderful couple and enjoyed the conversation. The Hideaway should remain hidden away. read more

TO DIE FOR ~ It's just THAT good! Our favorite restaurant in the Keys is OPEN once again following the devastation of Hurricane Irma. Every dish is beyond delicious, made from scratch, and the portions are MORE than generous (and we savor every bight). Last evening we had the Seafood Wellington and Beef Wellington, and both were cooked to perfection with an outer crust that was so delicate and delicious. The owner, Robert, is just delightful. Karma intervened last night as we celebrated our anniversary at the Hideaway Cafe on Grassy Key. The Cafe' is located at the Rainbow Bend Resort on the second floor overlooking a gorgeous unobliterated view of an immaculate beach and the Atlantic Ocean. We arrived at 8 o'clock and were given a very friendly reception. Seating is available in indoor or outdoor seating, each with its unique ambiance. We elected to eat outside on the roofed terrace in an elevated table overlooking the panoramic view. It was reminiscent of the Rainbow Cafe in Grand Case, St Martin. We were started with an exquisite tapenade and a right out of the oven french bread. This was followed by a very nice caesar salad. My wife had a delicious (light) sautéed francese Hogfish with shrimp and scallops in a scampi sauce, I had the blackened Hogfish, each bite to die for! Dinner was accompanied by mashed potatoes mouthwatering fresh green beans and sweetened carrots with honey,amaretto, black pepper. Chef Frieda surprised us with a toothsome caramel bundt cake. My son and I were having a quiet evening at the Rainbow Bend Resort after a day on the water and this French restaurant is on site - SO glad we tried it. I had the duck and it was PERFECT. Garlic bread, dill smashed potatoes, and the veggies were perfect too. My son had the kid's blackened chicken and it was also fantastic - tried the raspberry key lime mousse (divine) and the molten chocolate cake (also fantastic). She made the best recommendations and made the best food! The shrimp bisque was to die for! We also got surf and turf, beef Wellington, strip steak and all was exceptional!! Where are you taking me?!?!? Thoughts of doubt ran through my best friends mind as we head 30 min south of our existing hotel. Would the place live up to my expectations and truly be as amazing as it was 20 years ago. Suddenly a familiar sign. "Rainbow Bend". We are here! As we pull in to the parking lot, you can't help but to wonder, " Where is a restaurant hiding in this compound!" A small sign leads you up the stairs to the most friendliest staff you will ever meet. I haven't stepped foot here in over twenty years, but guess what? It is still here. We were greeted by chef Frieda (sp?) and Wanda sat us. I asked if the same people owned the place as did 20 years ago. Robert retired two years ago and his wife passed. However Chef Frieda, who worked closely with the prior owners decided to rally the troops and carry on the torch after Covid shut them down. With a renewed vigor for life the story continues. Chef Frieda shared her story personally and mentioned every recipe remains the same as when Robert and his wife owned it. From the bread to the dessert was made with love! The hogfish francaise melted in my mouth with a smooth buttery delight. Any portion that remained (which wasn't much) was packed in an elegant aluminum foil swan. I have no stake in the place and yet felt like i too was an owner. The heartfelt passion and love for cooking alongside the commitment to any guest that walks up those stairs is why I will continue to come down and patronize the Best Restaurant in the Florida Keys! As we were going into the restaurant there was a large group leaving. They immediately told us how great the food was and we were going to enjoy this place. How can you go wrong when a restaurant gets glowing reviews before you even walked in? Came here with family, celebrating a 50th wedding anniversary and it was really a cozy restaurant. The service was fantastic. Our waiter was very attentive, asked if this was our first time there. When we said yes, he immediately started telling us about the food they offered and what was popular. Apparently their whole duck is popular but I don't eat duck. When in Florida fish and/or steak would be my preference. We were told that they hand cut their steaks and they were generous portions and hogfish was the fish of the night. Scenic ocean views and literally a diamond in the rough. Yelp did not fail us, so we appreciate the hundred yelp reviews prior as the place is literally hidden. The food is at the level of a 5 star restaurant. The duck is probably the best duck I've ever had... while my wife's hogfish was out of this world. One of our all time favorites for an upscale meal. They have second story porch seating with a beautiful ocean view and well as indoor seating with a pretty good view as well. The menu doesn't vary much over years, but they have excellent duck, lamb and plus seafood Wellington as well as traditional beef. All of these dishes are a nice change from fish, fish and more fish typically served here. We locals get bored someTimes. But they do have very nice fish entrees as well. It was by far the best dining experience of our trip. From the outside, it looks like a dive. But, once you walk through the doors, everything changes. Amazing oceanfront view, delightful music, superb service, and delicious food were all on point. The bread and bruschetta were delicious. The entrees are served with vegetables and Cesear salad (so good). We had the fresh catch, rib steak, and the surf and turf. All excellent. Put this on your list of things to do in the keys.
