Frida is an amazing chef that produces some of the most delicious food! They're known for their duck, which is a must and is making my mouth water as I type this out. They're also known for their hogfish, which is my favorite! Great ambience and a beautiful view as they are right on the Atlantic Ocean. I've been coming to the Keys for five years and make a point of dining at least a couple of times at Chef Freda's Hideaway Cafe. This restaurant is truly a hidden gem and is in a class by itself in the Middle Keys. The place is tiny and I've found reservations essential. The Chef is gracious and friendly and serves excellent food. At some point in your dinner, she will come out and chat. The service is attentive and personal. I have trouble going further than the Duck on the menu. While I've eaten duck in many places throughout our country, Chef Frieda's is the best and the sauce is simply superb. For a fine dining restaurant, the portions are generous. If you have an appetizer and plan on one of the luscious desserts, you may find yourself taking half of your entree home for dinner the next night. Go there and enjoy! You won't regret it. read more

My parents recommended the hideaway cafe and we were excited after reading the reviews. The food was amazing but it wasn't perfect. The bread with tomato/garlic sauce was very good. The French onion soup also had an amazing depth of flavor and was one of the best I've ever eaten, although the bread was a little too soaked. I like a less soggy bread in my French onion soup. For dinner, we got the hog fish franchise and the beef Wellington. I realize my wife and I are not fans of beef Wellington because everyone said it was amazing and we found it to be just ok. But it was the first time we ever ate it so take it with a grain of salt. The hogfish franchise was good. The fish was cooked to perfection! But the plate had an oily clarified butter base that seemed excessive and took away from the delicate and delicious fish. For dessert, the cream brûlée. It was truly amazing. Overall, a lot of skill and technique went into the cooking and you could tell it was well made. We went for breakfast and the big pro is the view. It was surprising how many negatives there were since they had so many good reviews. Maybe we caught them on a bad day. First they had 4 options for breakfast, the ambiance of the whole establishment was a little run down and dated. The service was just bad, my wife ordered blueberry pancakes and they brought out regular pancakes and then asked if "that's okay?" and there was no water served during the meal. Their health inspection flagged issues that required follow up (see info on yelp), which was happening during our meal so we didn't see our waiter again. Looks are deceiving: A Must Stop for Dinner: They are tucked behind a motel beachside resort. At first you think "oh boy" then when you walk in and get seated you say "Oh Boy" amazing menu, great service and the food. Oh the food was perfect. Beach view and I'd say go early to get good seats. I can't say enough amazing things about Hideaway Cafe! It is a place we hit everytime we are in the Keys after falling in love with it on our anniversary trip in 2019. Don't give up if you can't find it immediately! We really thought we had taken a wrong turn until we called and talked with Robert the owner and he directed us to it. The food is exceptional as well as the atmosphere. White linen tablecloths, Sinatra crooning, waves crashing, and a fantastic wine list. My hands down favorite is the rack of lamb. We're in the Keys often, about once a month. We've been wanting to try the Hideaway for some time and on this particular trip, we eloped on the way down and decided to have our wedding dinner here. For starters we enjoyed some crusty bread with a tomato, garlic, balsamic dip that was good. Next we had the Zuppa di Clams and Mussels, it wasn't great and I'll take the blame for not inquiring first. I'm well aware that Green Lipped Mussels form New Zealand are almost exclusively shipped frozen and if I had known these were going to be Green Lips I never would have ordered them. They simply didn't taste fresh at all because they are not. Again, I should have asked first. The broth was overwhelmed with herbs which dominated the other flavors. My Wife had the Hideaway Seafood Special which was sole with shrimp, scallops in a scampi sauce, and I had the Catch Du Jour which was the same dish minus the shrimp and scallops. The fish was a thin (as you would expect from sole) fillet that looked rather spartan on a $30 plate. (see photos) A bit salty but the fish was moist, flaky and tasted fresh. The scallops were a little under cooked with no sear which would really bring out the flavor of scallops. The service was pleasant and the ambience was tranquil and nice during the sunset with soft music in the background. After a few more tables of people arrived, the music faded away and loud chatter ensued. We found ourselves talking loudly at each other just to hear ourselves. We will most likely return, but will order other dishes that looked yummy. read more

Wife and I went out for the afternoon to enjoy the view and the breeze by the Keys. No planned dining so checked on Yelp. Found this small tucked away bistro with a gorgeous view. They were fully booked but still made room for us in a very decent table. Food wants to have a French hint on things. And they sort of achieve it. We had shrimp bisque, clams and moules soup, francese fresh hogfish and a raspberry key lime mousse. All very decent. Not your expected keys meal, but in a good way. Service was flawless. read more

I'm drooling as I write this review. Wow just wow. I had the shrimp, scallops, and hogfish 5/5, and I absolutely adored it. My husband had the Chateaubriand 5/5 prepared medium rare perfectly. It tasted phenomenal. I also had the French onion soup 6/5, my grandma had a special recipe and this parallels how delicious I remember hers being. We had bottle of Sauvignon Blanc. I adored it.
