Mushy tomatoes - The image shows slices of fresh tomato, pickles, and a poppy seed bagel on a white paper-lined tray. The tray is placed on a brown surface, and the food items are arranged with the tomato slices and pickles visible. The setting appears to be a casual dining environment, consistent with Herm's Palace diner in Skokie, IL.

Stopped by for lunch. One of the few places where you can get a beer with your hot dogs. I asked if they had any 2 hot dog specials and they don't. Everything was a la carte. I order 2 hot dogs, fries and a soda. As I was dine-in you pay as you leave. The nice gentleman bought my food out. The hot dogs had a great snap, all the toppings were really good especially the peppers. The only issue I had was the tomatoes that were a little mushy for me. The fries were almost shoestring cut but were hot and crispy. The location is big and has its own parking lot. Inside are a lot of sports memorabilia and a huge mural with the restaurant family and famous faces from Chicago. I would definitely come back. But they lost a star for the tomatoes.

Chicken Caesar burger - Two sandwiches with bread, lettuce, tomato, and various fillings are shown in a paper wrapper on a flat surface. The sandwiches are partially eaten, revealing the ingredients inside. The image focuses on the food, with no visible restaurant or storefront context.

Yes - it's a hot dog joint. And while maybe I should take one star off because the bathrooms are in the basement down a steep flight of stairs - I won't. We don't live anywhere near Herm's Place - otherwise we would be there at least once a week. As it is - we plan any trip we make to the Skokie/Lincolnwood area to occur so we can stop for lunch with Herm. We love the pastrami on rye with mustard and onions. Very generous potion of pastrami - served warm with a nice soft rye bread and the obligatory spicy mustard. Soooo good. I've ventured off and ordered a chicken sandwich once - and a salad another time - but usually we both stick to the pastrami and a side of fries. Place your order at the counter - and if you're dining in - go sit down and they'll bring it to you - or call out if they are busy. Very friendly counter staff. They offer Dr Brown's soda in the can in addition to fountain drinks. Writing this review has me thinking I may need to head to Old Orchard tomorrow so I can get a pastrami sandwich.

Wall mural of famous people with ties to the Windy City. - The mural shows a smiling man with light brown hair, wearing a red shirt, holding a baseball bat over his shoulder. Surrounding him are stylized figures and Chicago-themed elements, including a woman with dark hair and a yellow shirt, and a person wearing a blue cap. The background includes clouds and abstract shapes, creating a vibrant scene.

We stopped for dinner and took a walk down memory lane. This is a place we used to go for hot dogs before Portillo's became huge. The service is friendly and efficient. The restaurant hasn't changed in decades but is well maintained and clean. If you are in Skokie stop in for a meal!

Onion rings - A serving of fried onion rings is presented on white paper in a basket, with a person's shoulder and part of their clothing visible in the background. The onion rings are golden-brown and crispy, arranged in a casual manner. The setting appears to be a restaurant or diner, with a brown table surface partially visible.

Came here to try the onion rings and loved the grilled jumbo dogs. I just had the fresh onions which were really nice and sweet. Loved the crisp skin and moist beefy meat. The onion rings were crispy as well. Tasty whole onion. I will definitely return. They have a large menu. The staff are super friendly. Place is really busy even at 1:30 no waiting though. Service is great.

My husband is a very loyal patron and put me onto Herm's. He usually orders the fried salami sandwich. My go-to is usually a chili dog, pizza puff, and fries. My kids like the tamales. This is a very family-friendly joint, and the two brothers that run it will make you feel like one of their family. It's casual and clean inside and just a great local Skokie restaurant. We eat here at least once a month!

Inside Herms Palace - The image shows the interior of Herm's Palace, a family-run diner, with a mural on the wall depicting diverse individuals, including a woman in yellow and men in suits and casual attire. Several customers are seated at tables, eating and talking. The ceiling has fluorescent lighting and air vents, and the floor is tiled. The restaurant has a casual atmosphere with indoor seating.

Very fun busy place ! I came across it after we were trying to go to a place across the street that said it was open that was not. It was quite delicious . I had the corn beef sandwich with pickles. My daughter had a club sandwich . They offered combos with fries and coleslaw but I wasn't that hungry We had bottles of water . There were many choices on the menu . I would drive there again to try something else. We do live almost 50 minutes away . Good job You pay on your way out of you dine in .

Not having visited in a while, we'd forgotten just how great this joint was. Herman, the original owner, sold his business way back in 1974; since then, the Shane family has maintained the name, traditions, and legendary comfort food. The place is nothing fancy but the wide-ranging menu extends far beyond standard hot dog-burger-gyros fare. Herm's is celebrated for their decadent "Cardiac Sandwich" (pastrami, fried salami & pepper jack cheese). Other options include a breaded veal sandwich, rigatoni, fish tacos, eggplant parmesan, pizza puffs, chicken gyros, etc., etc. There are salads and other vegetarian items, and they serve beer, too. Most sandwiches run under $10 (sides are extra), and menu items currently top out at $14.75. At least for now, Herm's is a safe harbor from inflation. I decided to be brave and order a turkey club. I've rarely seen this sandwich on other hot dog joints' menus, but Herm's version was a solid fresh-tasting hit with generous amounts of thin-sliced turkey and crispy bacon. My Missus said her chicken kabob plate was better than the versions served at many Mediterranean restaurants. But what made the experience extra-special for us was the guy behind the counter who adeptly juggled order-taking, serving, food prep, and running the whole show in general with an abundance of friendliness. Craig must have a photographic memory, as he somehow manages to get multiple orders and special requests exactly right without writing anything down. He makes an effort to get to know his customers, too. Watching him work and interact with his back room staff - and clearly enjoying his work - was a pure delight.

Vegetarian here. This is my favorite place to go to when I crave a good ol hot dog joint. My go to is the chopped veggie burger deluxe.

Since then, I have off-and-on ordered from nearby restaurants yet with an interest in revisiting Dear Franks at some point. It was not until I recently discovered its veggie and plant-based items on the menu when I made it a high priority to visit, being that I am now a vegetarian. After attending training at my job which sits no more than a mile from Dear Franks, I made my visit. Its location sits along W Touhy Ave amongst a mixture of restaurants and shopping stores that are relevant to the community of Niles. I was acknowledged shortly after I walked in and up to the counter to look at the menu which was plastered above the counter. It took me some time to look at the menu because the menu online differed from the menu onsite above the counter. I had a taste for a veggie hot dog, but I did not see it featured on the menu above the counter, figuring that it was no longer an option at the time. So, I ended up ordering their veggie burger, fries, and a drink which was completed within several minutes. While paying, I could not help but notice Turano products near the register. Turano baking company, a family-owned bakery that produces authentic and delicious breads. I drive by Turano's daily enroute to my primary job and it is hard not to notice its building exterior, which has a commanding presence. Being that I have had the interest in visiting Turano's for some time now, I ended up purchasing a Turano - chocolate chunk cookie to go along with my veggie burger, fries, and drink. Maybe now after purchasing the chocolate chunk cookie, it will urge me to visit its location in Berwyn. I chose to dine-in at Dear Franks since I had plenty of time in my day, plus I figured that I still had time to beat the traffic on Edens Expressway enroute back to Chicago. The inside of Dear Franks appeared clean, and the atmosphere gave off a sporty vibe with pictures of Chicago sports teams, and iconic sporting moments in history of those teams featured. And there are a number of tables with seats available inside of the dining area, plus a television plastered on the wall near the entrance for viewing pleasure as you eat. The crinkle-cut fries were the first item I started off with eating. Though not as good as Portillo's crinkle-cut fries, ketchup certainly complimented them well. From that point on, I could not resist eating them all after the addition of ketchup. I moaned in enjoyment after my first bite of the veggie burger; it was garnished with everything I requested such as ketchup, mustard, lettuce, and tomatoes! It was very satisfying indeed. Taking note of everything I experienced: service, ambiance, and food, I have to say that it was a good experience. And with that I would gladly re-visit Dear Franks of Niles again whenever in the Niles area. Service: 4 | Ambiance: 4 | Food: 5 ~Nourish your soul. ~ Thomas G

I am satisfied with their response and improve my rating from 1 to 4 stars This isn't a negative review of the food which was the standard chain quality (good but don't splurge on it much for health reasons). I was in the area for a play and picked up a local friend. I went here because an acquaintance (who since died) gave me multiple gift cards to Portillos which I needed to use. I had 4 cards, not sure how much was left on them. We got $27 worth of food and I started handing the cashier the cards. She told me to scan them on the read light reader. Only one had a scannable bar code. She was not sure how to read the others. My friend suggested she swipe it on keyboard, she didn't seem to know this already. Card 1 red light scanned ok. Card 2 swiped ok. Card 3 she swiped and it didn't register, unclear if it worked. Card 4 brought the total to 0$. She wasn't going to give the last 2 cards back and asked for the other two. My tried to clarify that card 4 might have value left, she confidently said no. I was suspicious since the total couldn't have exactly matched my bill. The next day I looked at the receipt and it clearly said there was money left on the card, over 8$. It's unclear whether card 3 had money or she just didn't scan it. I'm presuming this was poor training but it has an element of malicious intent since she was so confident I had nothing left on the card and requested keeping all the cards. If you have gift cards beware going here unless staff are trained. Receipt attached for proof. If the business is reading this, can I cat my money back? Card 3 was for $10 value but not clear if it was touched or not.

The menus are expansive and you order at the counter when you walk in. There are plenty of tables for dining in, and a few were taken while we were there. There was a steady stream of phone orders coming in for pick up, and the restaurant was busy overall. We were helped right away and the staff at the counter were so friendly. I ordered a Maxwell street sausage as a meal ($5 additional for a drink and fries) and my partner ordered the American Gyro sandwich and also as a meal. We grabbed a table and our drinks from the fountain machine and only waited a few minutes for the number on our receipt to be called with our order. The food here is so fresh and delicious. This is one of the best Maxwell street sausages I've had around, the bread was perfect and soft inside and crispy on the outside with the sausage split and grilled and perfectly sweet caramelized onions. The fries looked like they came in frozen/pre-cut but were fried up perfect and a generous portion. The Gyro came stacked with meat, it wasn't dry, and had great flavor. Because the food was so delicious I decided to grab a piece of baklava to go, which I was assured was homemade and delicious - and they were right. So sweet, fresh, textured, rich, luxurious. Don't skip the baklava when you stop by! This is definitely a spot that will be added to our regular rotation of lunch/dinner spots around town.
