While in Skokie, I decided to give Herm's a try. I've tried Poochie's and loved it, but hey, a new place. First thing, I was disappointed they had no hot dog special, you know, like 2 hot dogs, fries and a drink for x dollars. It was all a la cart. And one hot dog was $5.05, fries not included. I decided to get the Herm's special, which is supposed to be a 1/2 lb. Cheeseburger with fries and a drink. It was $18.55 so i figured it was going to be on par with Five Guys, which charges around $21 but you get a ton of fries and a really good burger. Ok, I'm waiting for my dinner. Here's where it goes off the rails... While I'm sitting, waiting for my food, the guy is making a hot dog for another customer. He's holding the bun in his left hand (no gloves), while applying the condiments. After he's done, he takes money from the customer with the same hand, and proceeds to make another hot dog, with the same unwashed hand. That's a major red flag. My burger arrived shortly after that. The burger? Good but undersized for the price. The fries were thin and average at best. Small portion for the price. I had to use the bathroom downstairs, and it was out of soap. Another red flag there. Look, Poochie's is better, cheaper, cleaner, and right down the road. Sorry, but I was disappointed with Herm's. read more

Unfortunately for us, we are not in the Skokie/Evanston area that often, because if we were we would be regulars at Herms. You can tell that this is a neighborhood place. The guy behind the counter knew the majority of the people that came in by name, and a few what they wanted to eat. So they have a very extensive menu, so it was tough to choose but I went with the bacon double burger and it was a very solid burger. I also chose the onion rings with it, and they were battered and ridiculously good. I stole some fries from my daughter and they were thin and crispy and amazing. My dad got the Italian combo with hot peppers, and he fancies himself as an Italian beef connoisseur. The beef was really good, and the gardinera was some of the hottest I've ever had. My daughter had the pizza burger which she loved, and we were looking around at what others had ordered and it all looked extremely good. This is not a fancy place by any means, but it was clean and simple. The next time we are in the area we will definitely stop back at Herm's. read more

This place is a five star because it has been a staple in my life since before I can remember...every basketball game, cheerleading practice, dance lesson--my family was here on a saturday for lunch. Stopped by for lunch. One of the few places where you can get a beer with your hot dogs. I asked if they had any 2 hot dog specials and they don't. Everything was a la carte. I order 2 hot dogs, fries and a soda. As I was dine-in you pay as you leave. The nice gentleman bought my food out. The hot dogs had a great snap, all the toppings were really good especially the peppers. The only issue I had was the tomatoes that were a little mushy for me. The fries were almost shoestring cut but were hot and crispy. The location is big and has its own parking lot. Inside are a lot of sports memorabilia and a huge mural with the restaurant family and famous faces from Chicago. I would definitely come back. But they lost a star for the tomatoes. read more

Yes - it's a hot dog joint. And while maybe I should take one star off because the bathrooms are in the basement down a steep flight of stairs - I won't. We don't live anywhere near Herm's Place - otherwise we would be there at least once a week. As it is - we plan any trip we make to the Skokie/Lincolnwood area to occur so we can stop for lunch with Herm. We love the pastrami on rye with mustard and onions. Very generous potion of pastrami - served warm with a nice soft rye bread and the obligatory spicy mustard. Soooo good. I've ventured off and ordered a chicken sandwich once - and a salad another time - but usually we both stick to the pastrami and a side of fries. Place your order at the counter - and if you're dining in - go sit down and they'll bring it to you - or call out if they are busy. Very friendly counter staff. They offer Dr Brown's soda in the can in addition to fountain drinks. Writing this review has me thinking I may need to head to Old Orchard tomorrow so I can get a pastrami sandwich. read more

Came here to try the onion rings and loved the grilled jumbo dogs. I just had the fresh onions which were really nice and sweet. Loved the crisp skin and moist beefy meat. Very fun busy place ! I came across it after we were trying to go to a place across the street that said it was open that was not. It was quite delicious . I had the corn beef sandwich with pickles. My daughter had a club sandwich . They offered combos with fries and coleslaw but I wasn't that hungry We had bottles of water . There were many choices on the menu . WARNING! CHECK YOU BILL VERY CAREFULLY. Owner does not give a detailed accounting of your check, just a total charge after your meal. He supposedly memorized what you ordered. Our total charge was $17 more than what we actually owed. When we questioned the total he made excuses that it was a mistake and that higher charge was the previous customer's total. No apology, but he voided the charge and issued a corrected bill. Seemed intentional. This experience left a bad taste in our mouths. read more

Not having visited in a while, we'd forgotten just how great this joint was. Herman, the original owner, sold his business way back in 1974; since then, the Shane family has maintained the name, traditions, and legendary comfort food. The place is nothing fancy but the wide-ranging menu extends far beyond standard hot dog-burger-gyros fare. Herm's is celebrated for their decadent "Cardiac Sandwich" (pastrami, fried salami & pepper jack cheese). Other options include a breaded veal sandwich, rigatoni, fish tacos, eggplant parmesan, pizza puffs, chicken gyros, etc., etc. There are salads and other vegetarian items, and they serve beer, too. Most sandwiches run under $10 (sides are extra), and menu items currently top out at $14.75. At least for now, Herm's is a safe harbor from inflation. I decided to be brave and order a turkey club. I've rarely seen this sandwich on other hot dog joints' menus, but Herm's version was a solid fresh-tasting hit with generous amounts of thin-sliced turkey and crispy bacon. My Missus said her chicken kabob plate was better than the versions served at many Mediterranean restaurants. But what made the experience extra-special for us was the guy behind the counter who adeptly juggled order-taking, serving, food prep, and running the whole show in general with an abundance of friendliness. Craig must have a photographic memory, as he somehow manages to get multiple orders and special requests exactly right without writing anything down. He makes an effort to get to know his customers, too. Watching him work and interact with his back room staff - and clearly enjoying his work - was a pure delight. read more

With so many similar places in the area; Dengeo's, Poochie's, Hub's, etc...Herm's would be a matter of personal preference and it's one that I've known about since high school. They have a large parking lot and ample menu board with all the usual fast food fare; burgers, hot dogs, salads, misc sandwiches and dinners,; lots to choose from and something for everyone, made to order. Having been in business so long, the owner can calculate your total in his head. They have several tables if you choose to dine in and fast carry out. I love their popcorn shrimp; it's only $10 for an ample serving and the shrimp are larger than popcorn. Give them a try. read more

Love this place. They always have neighborhood friendly vibe and patrons and Staff. The food is great and if you from out of town, this is the place to go to. Herm's Palace always has (2) two daily homemade soups available. I always get (1) of each soup to go; as I will be happy eating them latter. Parking is always available and free. This iconic spot had been dishing out comfort food for so long it was just called food when they started. Tucked in on Dempster Herms brings the real deal Chicago faves. Traveling alone I went for that Chicago classic the Italian beef sandwich and some fries. The sandwich was huge! Hot and steaming with hot peppers and a ton of beef. So steaming it basically fused the wax paper wrapping into one piece. People must have thought I had a tip on an upcoming famine! It's was awesome. Fries were super crispy and the Pepsi nice cold. Herm's Palace pretty much rules. We like to eat when we come to Chicago, and we try to make it to the city every year. And when we do, we make it a point to sample the native-to-Chicago fast-food junk cuisine at least once a visit, because Chicago's unique fare in that regard is at least as good as any city's I can think of. In particular, Chicago dogs and Italian beef sandwiches are delicious when they're done right. We stumbled onto Herm's on a cold, rainy April Monday after a late-morning movie in Evanston. It's in a low-slung, rangy building on an unassuming drag in Skokie. You enter at the back corner of the building and are immediately at the counter, where you order. This initially seems pretty intimidating because Herm's menu is about three miles long. But the staff behind the counter, at least on this day, were about the nicest restaurant operators you'll ever meet. Plus, we pretty much knew that we wanted the basics. Italian beef, gargantuan and sloppy for barely over six bucks, was top-shelf, and the wife reported that the Chicago dog was, too. I don't think the fries were hand-cut or anything, but they were piping hot, crisp, low on the grease, tasty, and plentiful. Herm's has a full range of beverage options, including beer. (At lunchtime, the wife and I are iced tea freaks, and the Herm's version was suitably fresh-brewed.) The dining area at Herm's is unassuming and basic, although bright and clean, with a big TV tuned to sports and an excellent giant mural featuring mostly Chicago sports heroes (Patyon, Banks, Hull, Jordan, Ditka, the Big Hurt, Jordan, plus Oprah and the Blues Brothers for good measure) surrounding the Herm's crew. When we were ready to leave, there was no check. Instead, the proprietor totalled the bill up verbally off the top of his head--he'd remembered exactly what we had. Both the memory and mathematics made for an impressive parlor trick. Even after seeing the low prices ahead of time, the total seemed remarkably low. And, as others have noted, the fellas refuse to take a tip; the gentleman stated that he just wants our return business. Which we'd be happy to give them with a frequency that would be dangerous to our health, if only we lived much closer. We'll find a way to get back, somehow, some day. For now, I can offer up only this five-star Yelp review. read more

How have I loved just a mile from this place without ever stopping in? I'm giving it five stars not because it's gourmet or fancy or anything like that - just the opposite. This is a no nonsense, straightforward joint with great service, selection, and value. I was able to get a burger with all the toppings, fries, and a soda for $10.
