    Chilaquiles rancheros
    Michael R.

Man if there was a time where I thanked my indecisiveness I was this morning. Not being able to make a decision on a good breakfast I just made the spontaneous decision of Frida's. Little did I know that that they specialized in Chilaquiles and as soon as I took the first bite I immediately knew that they took their Chilaquiles game seriously lol. Bursting with fresh flavor!!and a charming place in downtown Evanston. No frills. Friendly staff. An appealing and comforting quaintness. 10/10

Very cozy and personal atmosphere. The service was attentive and made sure all our needs were met. The food was excellent -- I had the Mexican toast with two sunny-side-up eggs, and it was absolutely delicious. I'll definitely be going back to try more dishes!

    triple berry crepes

We drive from Lakeview to Evanston for the triple berry mascarpone crepes very often. It is the only thing I have ever ordered from here and they are so amazing that I can't order anything else. These are the best crepes I've ever had and I order cheese crepes at every restaurant I go to. They have a very extensive menu with Mexican dishes. Service is always fast and friendly.

This place was hopping on a Saturday morning. They fit an impressive amount of seating into a small space. Service was still fairly quick though and efficient. Lots of tasty menu items. I had to stop looking so I didn't keep finding something else I wanted! Love that they have soyrizo!

    Frida's panini

I've been to Frida's a couple of times for brunch and have had a good experience trying both their signature and special dishes. The servers are attentive and nice, though when it is busy they definitely try to get the tables turned over efficiently on weekends. The decor makes it feel homey. I recommend getting Frida's panini, breakfast burrito, or enchiladas. I get something new every time. If you go on a weekend, make a reservation as it gets busy. Weekdays you can usually just walk in.

I came in search of chilaquiles. I've heard that this restaurant serves the same amazing chilaquiles that they used to sell at Danny's in the city (which has closed down a few years back) and honesty? They weren't wrong. These chilaquiles were fire. Crispy chips, super flavorful verde sauce, perfectly cooked egg. I added shredded pork to it and it took it up an extra notch. Service was lovely, inside is warm and inviting. There's pay to park street options available right out front. I'd love to come back here real soon!

    - AVOCADO OMELETTE

The avocado omelette was a great way to start the day. The potatoes were perfect and the apricot muffin was a great add to the plate

"Inspired by Frida, Devoured by You" . Still one of my fave restaurants in Evanston. Even if you know nothing about the famous artist, your stomach will thank you for eating such delicious dishes that nourish the soul and conquer your appetites. This is breakfast and lunch place worth trekking to Evanston to. My fave dishes are the enchiladas as well as the Chorizo scramble. Service is always great here and very good for large groups or even by yourself #evanston #chicago

    BANANAS FOSTER FRENCH TOAST
    Peter M.

This is my 2nd visit to Frida's this year. The 1st time I had the chorizo hash. Which is what I'll get next time I head here. This morning I went 180 degrees in the other direction and the Bananas Foster French Toast. It's really good. Loads of sweet flavor. As usual I was able to get a seat early with no wait. The toast came out really quickly. Everything was fantastic minus the tuba music blaring at 8:30am. The food is that wonderful you forget you're being audibly inundated by tuba.

Half sandwich and soup (Carnitas panini + Chicken and rice soup)
    Jenny T.

Food: Everything was so good! The half sandwich (panini) and soup was the perfect combination. I also really enjoyed the oat chai latte. My mom got the egg whites spinach mushroom omelette which was also really good. Service: Food was fast! Ambiance: Inside it was OK. There is outdoor seating. The store is small, nothing fancy to it.

    Warm vibes

    Do you need a reservation?

I don't think it's necessary as a general rule, but it might be a good idea at least on the weekend, especially if you want to make sure that you have an outside table.

It's spacious and a super cool venue, which was used for my daughter's high school fundraiser last weekend. I visited Double Clutch twice within one week. The first was a meeting held at the venue right before the event where everyone got to enjoy some beer (except those of us who don't love beer and opted for water) and some of the food that would be served at the event the following weekend. I munched on some turnbuckle pretzels, fried buffalo bites and cauli wings- all were pretty good! A few days later we sold out with a 300 person event, although honestly we could have fit way more in the space because there was plenty of room to move around. The band Go Ask Your Mum was playing lots of fun 80s and 90s hits, there was a buffet of the food we had tried a few days beforehand and the bar was busy. I opted for wine, which was good. The acoustics here aren't great, which i noticed during the meeting and during the event. The band was fun to listen to, but i could hardly hear anyone i was speaking to. But that's really my only complaint since it's a great space!

Molly was wonderful to work with--organized, responsive, and genuinely invested in making sure everything went smoothly. The second-floor party space is fantastic. It feels private and perfect for gatherings, with its own bar and restrooms, which made hosting incredibly convenient. (The only thing to note is that the space is accessible by stairs only.) We were also able to stream a slideshow at no additional cost and play our teens' Spotify playlist, which added such a fun and personal touch to the event. The food was a huge hit--guests couldn't stop talking about the Detroit-style pizza, chopped salad, and chicken wings. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and well-prepared. A special shoutout to Steve, our bartender, who took excellent care of us throughout the event. His attentiveness and friendly service really elevated the entire experience. It's located right down the street from Northwestern University's football stadium (whatever the heck they're naming it). This is a nice hidden gem in Evanston. Not located downtown, it may have a chance to stick around a while. As Jane V. noted in her review, you are greeted by a delicious smoky smell when you enter the restaurant. It was an inviting smell (at least for me), others in our group thought we were walking into a barbecue joint and were less than thrilled, but the menu put them at ease as it has a lot of options. There were five of us and one couple decided to share a couple appetizers as their entrees. They ordered the Cauliflower Buffalo Bites, and the Macho Nacho. They were huge portions easily enough for us all to share. However, my wife and I don't see eye-to-eye with our eating habits (she is mostly vegetarian and I'm a card-carrying carnivore), so she was not about to share the smoky wings and cheesy tots with me. I opted for the Chicken Vesuvio entree, and she and our other friend both ordered the Inside-Out Grilled Cheese. I would say most the sandwiches looked good (no portobello for me, thanks). I would say though, the desserts are pretty generic, so we opted out, but their is a door inside the restaurant to the donut shop next door (which was closed), but I wanted to try that place, so I'll have to make another trek out there for them and review them later. I'm amazed that the donut shop, DB3 Donuts, does not appear on their menu at all, despite having a connecting door from one establishment to the other, but alas, I've heard their apple crisp and brownie are good, but neither were too appealing that night. All meals were delicious and I definitely need to go back and try other dishes. And may DB3, if they are open. Give this place some love as it is a nice gem in Evanston.

So much so that I ordered the smoked Sampler plate, and was I glad I did. I started off with their Top O' The Morning special Saint Patrick's cocktail (Titos, Curacao, and orange juice shaken and poured over ice). I really loved this drink. My hubby had a Margarita that was just delightful. Our appetizers were: Angry Shrimp (really delicious) shrimp with a spicy tomato garlic sauce. Served over polenta cake. Ahi Tuna Wanton (mango jicama salsa, avocado, and teriyaki sauce) This should be their signature appetizer). The presentation is impeccable. It appealed to our eyes before the 1st bite. And,the first bite, as well as the rest, was wonderful. We would gladly return here just for this. Our entrees were: Grilled Salmon with corn risotto, grilled asparagus, smoked tomato aioli. The salmon was well cooked to medium, not too dry, and not too rare. The plate was well balanced and everything was very tasty. Smoked Sampler My favorite! Rib tips, brisket, pulled pork, Texas toast, cole slaw. For dessert: Chocolate Brownie Apple Crisp Both were so good that we did not want to share! If you are like me, trying to make that light, you will never see this place, but it is there and it is super cute. There is a lot of dark wood that just gives the space a cozy feel. There are also two garage doors that I assume can be opened when the weather is good. For you folks with dogs, beer drinkers who drink beyond the basic beers, bubble drinkers (like me) and those that want to bring in their own food...this is your place. We went there to meet some friends and to watch some football. For such a small place, they do have plenty of TVs with multiple games going. It was great to be able to have pizza delivered, with the bartender providing paper plates, and napkins for us to use. The bartender was also very cool about bringing our drinks over or picking up empties as we were sitting a a table away from the bar. I didn't get his name, but he was cool. There is street parking but not on Peterson itself. I would say, depending on the day, it might be hard to find a spot as you have to park on Ridge or some of the side streets. There is a new Metra station down the street that is about 2 blocks from the bar. Not sure if there is public parking available, but worth checking out. I could see myself coming here just because I can bring my own food and still get bubbles. While they do not carry bubbles by the bottle, the stuff they had in the can was good. I would love to go there when the weather is nicer and they have the garage doors open. And it is a happy compromise to hanging out with friends who have dogs that they just can't live without who also like to drink. This is a place we can definitely hang out with them and have a good time.
