We checked out this place with a few people on the Saturday evening after Christmas and were still amazed how empty the place was. Did everyone truly leave town? It's located right down the street from Northwestern University's football stadium (whatever the heck they're naming it). This is a nice hidden gem in Evanston. Not located downtown, it may have a chance to stick around a while. As Jane V. noted in her review, you are greeted by a delicious smoky smell when you enter the restaurant. It was an inviting smell (at least for me), others in our group thought we were walking into a barbecue joint and were less than thrilled, but the menu put them at ease as it has a lot of options. There were five of us and one couple decided to share a couple appetizers as their entrees. They ordered the Cauliflower Buffalo Bites, and the Macho Nacho. They were huge portions easily enough for us all to share. However, my wife and I don't see eye-to-eye with our eating habits (she is mostly vegetarian and I'm a card-carrying carnivore), so she was not about to share the smoky wings and cheesy tots with me. I opted for the Chicken Vesuvio entree, and she and our other friend both ordered the Inside-Out Grilled Cheese. I would say most the sandwiches looked good (no portobello for me, thanks). I would say though, the desserts are pretty generic, so we opted out, but their is a door inside the restaurant to the donut shop next door (which was closed), but I wanted to try that place, so I'll have to make another trek out there for them and review them later. I'm amazed that the donut shop, DB3 Donuts, does not appear on their menu at all, despite having a connecting door from one establishment to the other, but alas, I've heard their apple crisp and brownie are good, but neither were too appealing that night. All meals were delicious and I definitely need to go back and try other dishes. And may DB3, if they are open. Give this place some love as it is a nice gem in Evanston. read more

We celebrated Saint Patrick's Day at Ten Mile House restaurant in Evanston @tenmilehouse When we walked in the door, they had a delicious smoky smell that was driving me crazy. So much so that I ordered the smoked Sampler plate, and was I glad I did. I started off with their Top O' The Morning special Saint Patrick's cocktail (Titos, Curacao, and orange juice shaken and poured over ice). I really loved this drink. My hubby had a Margarita that was just delightful. Our appetizers were: Angry Shrimp (really delicious) shrimp with a spicy tomato garlic sauce. Served over polenta cake. Ahi Tuna Wanton (mango jicama salsa, avocado, and teriyaki sauce) This should be their signature appetizer).The presentation is impeccable. It appealed to our eyes before the 1st bite. And,the first bite, as well as the rest, was wonderful. We would gladly return here just for this. Our entrees were: Grilled Salmon with corn risotto, grilled asparagus, smoked tomato aioli. The salmon was well cooked to medium, not too dry, and not too rare. The plate was well balanced and everything was very tasty. Smoked Sampler My favorite! Cute suburban eatery with a surprisingly expansive menu super well executed with nice touches. Friendly and helpful service work together to get you anything you want, how you want it. Decent variety of wines by the glass, beer on tap and packaged, some fun cocktails. But back to the menu: SO MANY things look good on paper and then-- yay! They taste as good!! As you may or may not know, brunch is my favorite food group and Ten Mile has made the list of places to go to so I can meet that requirement. Ten Mile has a nice causal vibe with an open floor space. And the outdoor space is nice as well, weather permitting. We had been here years ago for drinks when a friend of ours, Norm King, was working there. We didn't eat but had drinks there. A couple we hang out with wanted to do brunch and wanted to check out Ten Mile. Well color me very happy at the menu selection! There were multiple items I wanted to tried, which means I will have to go back. Fortunately everyone got something I wanted and I was able to try a little of each...still going back to get my own. I got the Tostada Benedict. I am a fan of Eggs Benedict, and this was a different take on it: eggs over easy, smoked brisket & pork shoulder, chili, white cheddar, pico de gallop, lettuce, sour cream, green chili hollandaise, crispy tortillas. Oh so good with the big pancake...I love a little sweet with my savory for breakfast or brunch. I also got the Mimosa Kit for $30, which came with a bottle of opera prima sparkling wine and a choice of three juices (Orange Juice, Peach Surprise or Cranberry). My GF's husband got the Breakfast Chimichanga (creamy scrambled eggs, blended cheese, potatoes, pork shoulder, onions and tomato, guacamole, sour cream, pico, roasted tomato salsa). This was very good as well, but I will admit I am bias as I love Mexican and pork. But this is another dish I want to try on my own. My GF had the Croque Madame and that was delish too (house smoked turkey and Swiss on grilled baguette with tarragon mornay, fried egg). This came with an arugula salad, but I would have preferred fries with it. The Doctor got the Hangover Fried Rice (smoked pork, fried eggs, ginger, fresh vegetables). Very different take on fried rice and for brunch and not something I would have even thought about, but it was very good. There is a decent kid's menu if you are bringing little ones with you. They do accept reservations through Resy, so you don't have to wait on a table, but people were just walking in. It's spacious with lots of seating options. The service was great! I really wanted to like the food here but unfortunately it was a miss. So totally different feels and experiences. We told the person who dropped the food off and he said "you have to tell your waiter." We couldn't find our waiter. Finally, when the waiter returned, he apologized and did put a new ticket in but didn't notice that the fourth person's meal still hadn't come out. We saw them take it to a different table. We flagged him down again and he apologized and put a new ticket in. Finally all of the food came out, but we were each server at totally different times. At no point did they return to refill our sodas or waters. If it was busy, I could've understood, but it wasn't. The food was fine, but getting it shouldn't be such a problem. Stopped in for lunch on a Sunday afternoon, but lunch did not start until 3 p.m. I had the Tostada Benedict. Their portions are very generous. The Benedict was shredded pork, beans , pico de gallo and sour cream. There was plenty of pork, but there could have been more lettuce, pico de gallo and green chili hollandaise . Two eggs topped the pork. My daughter had the fried chicken sandwich. The sandwich had 2 pieces of fried chicken topped with pickled onions and horseradish slaw. She had the green chili mayo on the side , which was spicy. The sandwich came with a side of fries. The sandwich was a good portion. There is indoor and outdoor seating, we opted to sit in side because the only outside table was in the sun. This was my second visit, and I have to say the dinner menu is better than the brunch menu. For brunch, I ordered the dude biscuit, which comes with bacon, a sausage patty, egg, and maple syrup. Individually, they're good, but assembled all together, it was not very appetizing. My husband ordered the biscuits and gravy, and for $17, I was appalled at the portion size. It came with one biscuit, one sausage patty, and the gravy. It should not be called "biscuits and gravy" because it only comes with one biscuit! They did have a separate kids brunch menu, and I got the happy face pancakes for my children. I tried the pancakes, and those weren't bad. The breakfast potatoes came last, and they were not very good because they were undercooked potatoes. The flavor was good but I couldn't eat it because it was undercooked. Our waitress and the staff were super friendly, even during my first visit. I remember having the chicken sandwich for dinner and ordering the kids' cheese pizza, and those were good. Came here for the first time during peak time on Sunday brunch without any reservations. Fortunately this area does not charge for parking on Sunday and we were lucky to find a spot on the street very close to the restaurant. We were also very lucky that they sat us despite not having reservations as that was the first question they asked us when we walked through the door. The menu was great and eclectic with a really innovative and creative names for their dishes. The overall ambience is very relaxed and casual which is great. It was unfortunate though that they had run out of a few items on the menu but I believe this is pretty common right now during this supply chain problem of Covid. I was surprised to see that they share a space with the donut shop next-door and they may be the same owner. Portions and pricing were decent considering that this area is pretty upscale and near the University therefore rent is higher in prices are expected to be higher. The food was delicious. The food was so tasty we cleaned off all of our plates. The only unfortunate part was that all the bacon arrived very very well done. After trying the Glenview location a year ago, we thought we would test the Evanston location. We were very happy with the service and ambience. I highly recommend the pulled pork platter as well as the chili. Both were fantastic. My wife enjoyed her salad with grilled chicken. Pros: Some things were really good - the hangover fried rice, the croque madame (even though it was totally not the right kind of sandwich), the french toast, most of the dude (though sausage patty was way too big). We were not checked on after food was brought out, then had to flag down server for hot sauce and more water, and server did not notice that the entirety of my frittata was left on my plate or bother to ask if it was not to my liking. I really want to love 10 Miles House. We have visited twice now and I just haven't found a go to item that is worth the prices they charge for their food. Most of the tap beers are IPAs, but they did have a more malty beer called Moose Drool that was quite tasty. They also have some interesting cocktails. Most disappointing was the House Smoked Brisket sandwich. It was so dry and had no flavor. My husband did love the half chicken. We both love Brussel sprouts, but the spouts a 10 Mile House aren't your typical roasted sprouts...they are more like a slaw or something, and we were shocked out how little you get. The staff have all been friendly and professional. We are hoping to try brunch out one day....I'm still optimistic that I might find something that stands up to all the raves I've heard. read more

With Ten Mile House across from Ryan Field (Northwestern's football stadium) and none of my friends or I wanting to buy tickets to the Michigan Northwestern game, we decided we would take the shuttle to the stadium to be near the action and then watch the game at Ten Mile House. I was looking forward to trying the restaurant as it always seems to have a steady crowd on weeknights when I drive by and the reviews looked pretty good. We arrived right before the game started and were seated quickly. Instead of being seated in the dining area, they sat us in this weird room that I later figured out was the donut shop next door. While the restaurant is dimly lit, has lots of TVs, and is loud - perfect to watch a football game - the donut shop was too bright and sterile and my friends and I agreed it was a weird atmosphere. We should have asked to move, but as mentioned we didn't realize that we weren't in the restaurant and all the tables were the same. Despite the poor seating, we thought the drink menu and desserts looked great (we had already eaten lunch) and planned to watch the entire game at the restaurant since we had a pretty good view of a TV. The waiter came by quickly to take our order, but none of us had finished looking at the menu. He seemed annoyed, but we shrugged it off. A few minutes later we ordered our drinks from a great list of local beers. I got a delicious pineapple cider from a Brewery in Naperville and the three of us ordered the Apple crisp to share. The dessert was good, but not two minutes after it came out, our waiter threw down the check! We were shocked - we had just gotten there and he was pushing us out! What if we wanted to stay and order another drink? It wasn't even the end of the first quarter! A minute later our waiter ran by and swooped up our check. Since we weren't rushed, the football was exciting, and it was at most 60 seconds later, we hadn't bothered to put a credit card in. So there goes our waiter embarrassing himself walking away with an empty check and making us even more confused on why he wants us out so fast. We called out to him, he put the check back on the table, and we decided to leave at half time. Although the cider and dessert were good and the menu looked great, being rushed ruined my experience. There's an element of active marketing here, people outside see the buzz of the indoors and it calls their attention to join in. The name of the restaurant is regarded in history for much of the same. A lively social hub founded in hospitality that proudly served the North shore. My first visit to Ten Mile, the food was pretty fantastic. Service was forgettable and the timing of dishes was off. My second visit to Ten Mile, the food wasn't as good. Service was about the same and we shook our heads wondering what happened? My third visit the food was okay and service was alright except that the timing of dishes was off. Again. It has the ability to be a 4 - 5 star ranked restaurant, the problem is, as other reviewers have commented, they aren't committed to sticking to their level of quality. Which sucks because the place is lively, scene plush and food can be great. Sometimes it's the little things. Forgetting to fulfill a drink order or refill. Leaving out incorrect menus. (Sometimes some smoked meats are only available during Happy hour or special timings. These menus/notices are intermingled with the regular ones, leaving customers irritated that they can't order them.) Forgetting an order/item or just the quality of dishes. The quality can be hit or miss. ie pizzas oily, favorites having a different flavor. I'd rate them a 3.5 star if possible. 4 if their waiters were more alike. 5 if they locked down service and quality. My fan favorites include: Spicy shrimp polenta, smoked wings, SW chicken sliders. Chow mein refers to 炒面(chao mian) which is stir fried noodles but it ended up being soupy. So that was a bit strange. It was kind of like a breakfast style noodle soup which wasn't bad but just not what I was expecting. The meat in it was a nice pulled pork which actually tasted pretty good, but I felt the dish did not really come together well. I was adventurous that day with it but maybe I should not have been. The breakfast sandwich they gave me at first incorrectly might have been the better option. Berry French Toast - This was really good. Three berry French toast with just the right amount of everything. This redeemed the meal. PROBABILITY OF RETURN: 6/10 I would consider coming back here but I'd probably try another brunch place first before coming back here. A couple months back I tried for the first time a small sample of pesto pizza from 10 Mile House at the Evanston Arts Center yelp party and I loved it so much that I decided that I must come back for more. I invited my whole family for a Sunday brunch. I can't remember what everyone had but the consensus was that it was good. I chose the house salmon with a grilled baguette, capers, tomatoes, red onion, arugula, hard boiled egg, and mascarpone spread. Seriously yum! The service was excellent, coffee refills came quickly and our server was extremely attentive. I have to come back for dinner because I want to order that pesto pizza soon! The space has an urban vibe with a wide street front window onto Evanston's Central Street. Casual but nice. When it was getting dark, the staff came around and lit the little oil lamp on each table. The food was ample - my hamburger was charbroiled, very good. Kid had buttermilk breaded chicken sandwich which was two huge pieces of battered and fried chicken between buns - just a bit of spice. This comes with cole slaw. Both came with a ton of very nice fries. Lemonade was really good. Root beer comes in a bottle. I finally got to try this Northwestern University staple. The moment I walked in, I was already feeling the upscale casual environment. The service was fast and friendly as we were seated immediately. There were a bunch of menu items I wanted to try, but on this particular evening it felt like a fried chicken kind of night. I was sold once I read the chicken sandwich came on a brioche bun and was topped with green chili mayo. My goodness was the sandwich a handful and I appreciated the generous side of fries. The brioche bun was toasted to perfection and the horseradish slaw complimented every crunchy bite I took. So I just came from this restaurant. My son and myself were on motorcycles and past by the area. I saw a food truck and grabbed me a lobster sandwich but my son didn't want it. We went in Ten Mile House and ordered him a brisket sandwich and a sprite for me. Brisket came, like the other reviewers said, dry and chewy! Not even close to other bbq joint in Evanston I've been to. To my surprise, the "owner" (didn't get his name) came out to our table outside, acting cool but upset that we came to sit at his restaurant with a sandwich from another establishment. I explained to him that my son didn't want the lobster sandwich and ordered a brisket from them instead. He didn't think that it was right that I brought a sandwich from another place. I apologized to him if he got upset but we just spent money on their overpriced brisket that wasn't even that good. Not worth the price! They will expect you to eat away from your group or in my case, away from my son. I am a nurse at Evanston Hospital a few blocks down and we usually order for takeout/delivery and most of the time, not all people will want to have something from the same place.
