visited union pizzeria in downtown evanston last night. here's what we ordered! - drinks: goody two shoes mocktail - app: italian fries - pizza: margherita, wild mushroom, quattro formaggio - pasta: tonnarelli cacio e pepe a very lively place to be on a Saturday night in a central location! a great place if hosting a large party dinner and would like to order family style! the pizzas weren't my personal favorite so if planning to visit, I'd recommend skipping on those. They lacked depth and flavor. the pasta and fries were good, especially the aioli that came with the fries! I wanted the rigatoni pasta but they were unable to take the pancetta out to make it vegetarian. The price wasn't worth the quality and flavor of the food but I enjoyed the mocktail! read more

This is a cool spot connected to a really nice entertainment venue. After the show we stopped in here for food. The service upon entry was wonderful. We stayed because you can make the pizza vegan. Just know in advance you can subtract items but not add them. The gluten free pizza is a little smaller than the regular crust, however it is really tasty. The server said the pizza was single serving, so we ordered two. Turns out one would have been enough. The calamari was delicious as well. The sauce it was in was so good. read more

The host sets a tone for the experience in a restaurant; a bad host can ruin the experience and a good host can elevate it exponentially. We walked in and were not greeted. The host said, "just two of you" and then walked us past all the windows to the back of an empty restaurant, placed the menus down and walked away. No, "is this okay?" So we stood there before someone asked if we were ok. The table they offered us was literally off the kitchen exit/entrance and they were flummoxed that we asked for a different table. They did seat us at a different table eventually and they did seat a couple of teenagers at the table and it seems that's the table the seat people they don't want back. We arrived at 5:15 on a Saturday night and Union Pizzeria was already hopping. We were able to get a seat at the end of the bar, which worked great. Union hit all the right notes on our first visit - great atmosphere, helpful, friendly staff, amazing food and drink. To start, I ordered a Campfire Old Fashioned. Slight sweetness followed by a bit of smoke. Aptly named drink. We shared the kale and cauliflower appetizer- can't recall it's official name. The bartender recommended it and he was spot on. Delicious! Next we shared the prosciutto arugula pizza, another winning dish. Union is a bit on the pricier side, but everything we ate was delightful. First off, parking is challenging around here and be sure to make a reservation if you can because on a Friday evening, the wait time for walk-ins was around 45 minutes when we got there. Thank goodness I had a reservation, and they seated us right away! I got excited by the guava in the one-two punch cocktail, but I thought it was a bit too tart for my preference. I ordered the dates for an appetizer, and those were delicious. I wish they provided bread with it because the sauce is so delicious. I LOVE cacio e pepe, so I order it anytime I see it on a menu. Theirs was good, but I thought it was a bit on the salty side, however delicious nonetheless. I saw that the lamb sausage pizza is one of their popular items, so I also ordered that. I missed that it has olives, and I was already kinda nervous about the eggplant. The lamb sausage pizza is okay. The lamb flavor isn't prominent in the sausage, and I thought the olives were overpowering. I tried a slice of my husband's bacon and shrimp pizza. It's a lovely mix of salty, sweet, and spicy from the raw jalapeños. Be aware - they don't remove the seeds from the jalapeños! read more

I don't normally write a review, but I felt I needed to share an experience I didn't think I would have. My wife and I had a reservation this evening, which we were seated quickly. Please note that the guests at the two tables surrounding us were their before and also had yet to order. Once we were seated, it did not take long for us to order. We ate and drunk then ask for the check. My wife went to use the bathroom when the manager came to me and asked about needing the table because another reservation was waiting for it. At first, I did not think much about it until I notice that the guests around us were not asked at all about needing their table even though they were done and just talking. Definitely 5 stars for the food AND the service. We stopped in last night at 6pm and they were busy. We sat at the bar and had the Caesar salad and dates for an appetizer. The salad was great but the dates? Absolutely amazing. I'm glad that the bartender Ben recommended them. We each had our own pizza , one was the sausage and spinach with a bechamel sauce which was superb and the other was pepperoni and sausage. The first was insanely good and the other was fantastic. Sausage and pepperoni sounds basic but the flavors were incredible along with the crusts on both. What I really want to comment on was the service. Our empty plates and glasses were never sitting there for long, quickly taken away and replaced when needed. Watching the entire staff work as a team was cool. When the staff takes ownership of the entire dining room you know you're in the right place. Thank you to the entire staff for a fantastic meal and experience. I was excited to try Union Pizzeria because it's always packed when I walk past it, but it didn't live up to my expectations :( We ordered the Octopus & Potato small plate and the Lamb Sausage pizza as per our waiter's recommendation. The octopus was tender, and the potatoes were well-cooked, but the dish was nothing special. We also couldn't finish most of our pizza because it was too salty and oily, not to mention the cheese was hard?? Nice place. It's roomy and comfortable. They have plenty of tables and some couch like area with tables. They have also an outside covered area. Do make a reservation they will fill up. We had a reservation and were promptly seated. Our server was very nice ,prompt, helpful and pleasant. We had the hummus shawarma it was delicious. We tried many drinks loved them all. Finally we ordered a pizza sausage and sweet pepper. It was the blandest thing ever. No flavor. Cheese slid right off and couldn't really taste much sausage. I like the spot but hated the pizza. I bookmarked Union Pizza for months and finally made a visit in February. We arrived on a weekend at opening and, in hindsight, it was a good move. This place gets packed around dinner time and I didn't feel like waiting around for a seat. Since it was empty, we were able to get prime seating and full attention from the staff. We ordered drinks and started with their Sicilian Shrimp and Grits plus a Meatball appetizer. Between the two, I really enjoyed the shrimp and grits. The fresh shrimp was plump and the grits were creamy and packed with flavor. I was not a fan of their meatball appetizer. Sadly the meatballs were dry and tasteless. The meatballs came with a mango salsa which would've paired better with marinara. The Prosciutto and Arugula Pizza was our main entrée. It was big enough to feed two and we finished with only a couple of slices left over. A bit pricey at $18.00 but it was good. Street parking is spotty but if you come on a Sunday, the public parking garage across the street is free. The food, ambiance, and experience were memorable and I wouldn't mind returning to try other things on their menu. read more

So, one week after stopping in a local pizza place and having an odd night of terrible service and pretty bad pizza I find myself here. As I settle down for a drink and a mushroom (trying to do the vegetarian / vegan thing) pizza, I catch myself thinking about that! Stranger in a strange land...I only thought about it for a minute! This is a drastic difference to what I experienced last week. Far more of what I have always come to expect from a local pizzeria! Sat at the bar, got some great service. Ordered my mushroom pizza, light on the cheese but hopefully not flavor, and drank my drink. This is a nice room. Beautiful art work and warm and welcoming feel. The Staff is friendly, bar service was great..even on a Friday night with no TV showing sports I was totally OK. People were nice, attentive and the food came out fast, as it should at a thin crust, wood-fired oven type of place! The pizza was very good! The crust was light, had a nice crunch and a soft chew. The sauces was nice and light...a white sauce but not heavy, very good fresh mushrooms and just the right amount of cheese! Lots of flavor, a nice chew and what a hand crust pizza should be..a little char to the crust! I took this back to my room and had a nice snack later that night! Our table of 4 shared a kale salad and a cauliflower and kale appetizer, the 2 pizzas. There were 4 pieces of pizza leftover. We had a mushroom and a spinach ricotta. Great food and service, rude manager. My husband, child and I walked in just before 5 pm. Most tables were open. The host was very nice and accommodating and went to put a high chair at our table, while we waited at the host stand. The manager looked at us like scum and in a condescending tone without greeting us first or anything, was Iike, "You know you have to be out by 6:30 for the reservation at that table, right?" It was so unnecessary and rude. Otherwise, the staff was so attentive, and it would have been such a nice evening. We had our drinks, appetizer and pizzas without rushing and walked out at 6 pm squarely. I'm sure every other employee hates working with her.
