I love this place and I don't even care for pizza! This has to be the best Detroit style pizza I ever had!

Union Squared in Evanston has been on my must try places for at least a year. I finally decided to check it off my list and the pizza was meh. I ordered The Godfather pizza which was $32. You don't get to choose a size but the pizza can accommodate at least 3-4 people. I opted for delivery and the pizza arrived in great shape. The pizza looked nice but it was extremely dry and lacked flavor. I've had Detroit style pizza in Detroit many times and this wasn't it. The pizza can be best described as a breadstick with meat sprinkled on top. I tried to eat the leftovers the next day and ended up throwing out the rest of the pizza. It's rare for me not to finish pizza so Union Squared in Evanston is a giant no. read more

Well let's see ... Im struggling to find my voice on this one. I was underwhelmed. It's a Detroit style pizza leaning towards a grandma pie or Sicilian style crust. The cheese side was not tasty. The side with the meats was better. Sausage had some speed on its fastball for sure. They don't offer ranch which goes with Detroit style like ketchup to fries. Looks like a good date spot inside. Can't say I'd recommend based solely on the pizza. Might be a little biased having Jet's and Buddy's accessible while in school in Detroit. Still ... 3/5 read more

If you're gluten free but you want pizza... This is the place. I don't normally like thick pizza, but this is absolutely delicious. I've had the Greek one, the cheese one, and the mushroom and spinach one. All were amazing. I wish I could do a build my own. I also wish they had vegan meats. They do have vegan cheese. read more

I got carryout here, but thought I would still give it a rating because I thought this place was excellent with just a few hiccups. I ordered the pizzas online for later pickup. The ordering online went generally well, but I kind of wished that there was a better way to just order a custom pizza. I know I could have probably called in, but I used the online tool and got what I wanted: Simple Peperoni Pizza and a Simple Sausage (this is the one I had to trick the system). Anyway, picking up the pizza went perfectly which was awesome. It was ready on time and the pickup was seamless. No notes here. Just perfect. How as the pizza? I have had Detroit Style Pizza before and this was my absolute favorite. I think they might use better cheese and/or better sauce than a normal Detroit Style Pizza. The only downside I would say is the cost. These pizzas are quite expensive. Still, I mentioned that they were the best Detroit Style I have ever eaten so that sticker shock was short lived. If you make a pizza like this, I could see you charging a little more. This also seems to be a bit of a small Evanston business so its always nice to support them! Unlike its sister venue this is strictly a pizza joint with drinks. And the pizza is Detroit style ie square hence the name. It's deep dish light. Nice crusty edges but not thick doughy crust. It's definitely a place to go if you're hungry. Huge portions except for the drinks. Service is amateur. Servers don't know how to check the room before they leave. Just basic front of the house training. Missing. And irritating. We had the sausage pepperoni pizza. Fresh tomatoes sauce generous cheese. read more

This was my first time trying Detroit style pizza, and it was yummy. Compared to turn crust pizzas, it transports well, so the pizza was still hot by the time we brought it home. The crust is fluffy. On the special pizza of the week, the ricotta cheese worked so well with the red sauce. We also tried the margherita pizza, which I didn't enjoy as much - I would have liked the sauce to extend further to the edges of the pie, and it could have used more basil. read more

First time here and the store front looks more like a small deli counter but if you wind your way to the back of the restaurant is a very nice beer garden but they don't cover the tables with enough shade on a hot evening. The front seats 18 between like 4 tables so I wonder what they will do in the winter. I'm not a fan of delivery or pick up so I'll just have to stick to a summer shandy. They have draft and canned beer and 2 choices of frozen or slushy drinks. I tried the slushy margarita and it was perfect. Detroit style pizza is pretty doughy and thick. I prefer deep dish or thin but they use good ingredients and we ordered their special sausage pineapple minus onion for the partner. I'm going to ask for extra crispy next time even though the crust looks crunchy the bottom was not brown which might be way it was doughy. They're building some bacci lanes and I think they should have extended seating as they only have room for about 50. They have 2 gender-less bathrooms and the kitchen is very clean and tidy and tiny. I think they focus on pick ups. The manager or owner was sitting inside on his laptop and didn't even bother to check the crowd or the service which was lacking. Only one waitress and several bus staff who really didn't check if we needed water, plates or more drinks. Otherwise I would have given 5 stars for the quality of foods. read more

I haven't been able to eat Detroit style pizza for more than six years due to food allergies. Union Squared has not only gluten free crust but also DAIRY FREE CHEESE!! This midwestern pizza-monger was DEEPLY happy eating an entire GF DF Godfather pizza packed with mini pepperonis and sausage. Absolutely no regrets. On top of it all, service was kind, casual, and engaging and the back patio made for a cool, shaded Saturday night dinner. Can't wait to come back here again. read more

The patio is tucked behind the store front through a gangway. The outdoor atmosphere was really nice. The server was very friendly and helpful, but wasn't very attentive towards the end of the meal. Had to flag him down several times as he was talking with the other workers. I salad wasn't bad but had a lemony hint to it not my favorite. The pizza I ate was the sausage pepp and I felt it was very flavorful, my wife didn't like the margarita as much. Definitely want to come back and check it out during the day and maybe play some bocce ball. read more

I'm a pizza snob and was at first suspicious of the idea of "Detroit-style pizza". After all, growing up in Chicago meant that we were always in the Red Wings' shadow (thanks, Steve Yzerman). When I first went, I was impressed at the variety and adventurousness of the offerings...but have to admit that the pizza itself just didn't seem right. Somewhere between thin-crust and deep-dish, it's about an inch thick. However--once I bit in, I was hooked. This is really, really good pizza. It's gourmet without being pretentious. I would bribe someone to get the brussel sprout salad recipe (the menu is a little coy about it all). They have a great patio for outdoor dining, but make sure to make a reservation. We showed up at 6pm on a Sunday with a reservation and saw at least 4-5 groups (some as small as two people) have to go elsewhere. read more

The pepperoni pizza is insanely good. We ordered takeout and enjoyed slice after slice at our weekly wine class. This was my first time trying Detroit-style pizza. Amidst the ever-present debate of whether Chicago or NYC has the better pizza, Union Squared's pizza has made this debate so much more contentious. The only downside is that the pizza was pretty pricy (upwards of $30 for around 4 servings). But in this case that might also be a good thing because otherwise I would be eating this pizza nonstop. read more

Ok, so this was recommended/raved about by previous NU students and it DID NOT disappoint!!! The staff completely accommodated additions to our reservations we ended up 9 not 7. We had a table on the patio and the staff helped with great recommendations. We had 5 pies and three were "splits" (half and half) so we got to try 8 different flavors. While I am sad that the food at the sister restaurant Union is no longer of the same quality as it had once been, I am thrilled that the food at Union Squared hasn't degraded in quality. Note: Given that the pizza is Detroit style, it can be a bit salty. You cannot go wrong with the Brussel Sprouts salad here, and my favorite pie is the Broccoli and Potato (Gluten Free version), but you really can't go wrong the classic Margherita or Spinach Greektown. You get your bang for your buck here--if you can snag a seat outdoors, highly recommended! read more

College towns have charm. It's why I loved eating out in Bloomington, IN: somehow, even the worst food has charm, especially after a few cocktails have made their way into your system. And I think college kids are just so grateful to get FOOD that extreme discernment flies out the window. Northwestern University is a similar vibe, if not with a slightly-refined palate. Of course, you have to get out of the confines of core campus a bit where, I'm told, food is decent, but not mind-blowing. While visiting a friend who's an undergrad there, though, I did my research and it brought us to Union Squared. I now crave it on a daily basis. I'd never really had Detroit-Style pizza and had only heard about it a few times. After trying it though, I couldn't understand why! It has the crisp, light crust of a well-crafted focaccia with pristine toppings no matter WHAT you choose, not to mention a crust that really stands up to a sizable amount of toppings. We went with a classic margherita variant, of course, and threw a spanner in the works with a broccoli-potato that, in all honesty, makes my top 20 list of pizzas I've ever tried. The pizzas are simple, not over-seasoned, and allow the ingredients, common as they may be, to shine and thrive. Ever since the pandemic began and my friend has returned to Indiana, we've only been able to reminisce about this joint. I think I've got her hooked, and I have no regrets whatsoever. read more

Love this crispy Detroit style pizza. Being a New York boy, it reminds of Sicilian style rectangle slices. That's high praise compared to the the deep dish pizza piles that Chicagoan's think is just as good as east coast thin crust. Nope, it's not. Sorry I've tried. But this pizza was great and fun and proper chewy crispy. Outdoor seating on the back patio had a good vibe and great local beers to go with the food. Caesar salad was a tasty complement as well. One of my new favorite pizza places!! I'm usually a thin crust pizza kind of girl but the Detroit style pizza here is just so good. Union squared seems to be the smaller sister restaurant of Union Pizza. It's small but super cozy and I haven't had trouble getting a table the three different times I've been. So far I've tried the sausage supreme, godfather, burrata, and barbecue chicken. My favorite is definitely the burrata and if I'm feeling something with meat I'd get The Godfather. The barbecue chicken was decent and very rich, and as for the sausage supreme it wasn't a huge hit with me or my friends. The prices are defs more expensive than your average pizza, but still pretty affordable. I also love how you can get half pies to try different options. If only two people are going, I'd recommend getting a pizza with two different halves! read more

Solid 3.5 stars. Post Thanksgiving and the fam wanted a break from turkey, so I suggested and picked up a few pizza pies for our next family hang. Union has been on my bucket list awhile and this was the perfect time to try them out. Union squared serves up Detroit style, pan pizza. This equates to a crust deeper than a Chicago traditional pan, rectangular in shape & which is focaccia-like. The crust is topped with cheese, then toppings with sauce drizzled on-top. The sides are brushed with butter which, when baked gives a nice cinge on the crust and is crispy. Union has a reputation for quality ingredients but looking over the menu many are run-of-the-mill. Nothing out of the ordinary which beckons the repeated question.. why are your pies $26 dollars? (before tax) Back at the homestead with thirteen hungry stomachs to feed we were instantly disappointed when the lid was lifted. These are small pies. Good thing I picked up an extra from a competitor. I figured why not try the same style but elsewhere. Back to their pie. It is best when served piping hot. I tried it hot and cold. We got the Godfather which has sausage, pancetta and pepperoni. It was too salty for the children so only adults ate it. Slices with sauce were tastier than those without. A few sarcastically asked, whether they, Union, had met Jet's pizza. Same thing but Jet's offers flavored crusts. Food and how it is interpreted is different for everyone. I'm speaking of all the 4-5 starred reviews. Currently, Chicago has a few Detroit style options to choose from which I implore others to try.
