This neighborhood feel restaurant was a hidden gem located within Wilmette. It is a small location and is nestled in between a bakery and ice cream shop. I really love the small feel and the service was phenomenal. You are able to make your own custom pie, which I liked. The door was very consistent with a New York slice, the cheese quality was great, And the pizza was not too dry. The sauce had a great aroma and taste, and the ingredients that they use for toppings were a high quality. This is a very good pizza shoppe. I ordered the no nonsense cheese pizza. Very light and thin with a good crisp on the bottom. I'm not a fan of pizza crust but I at the crusts on this pizza it's that good. I've tried most of the NY style places in the Chicago area and this is easily in the top 3. Although the branding highlights pizza, which is great, I can say that the pastas and salads are both unexpectedly excellent and reasonably priced. Food was extremely salty tonight. I rarely complain but tonight bc the food was so salty as to be unpalatable, I did ask to send the food back. The server was polite and appropriate; the manager named Conor was defensive and condescending. Ordered for delivery. Arrived on time. Enjoyed my pesto pizza - flavorful toppings (pesto, ricotta, and "oven roasted cherry tomatoes") with a crunchy crust that was chewy enough to finish. Would eat again. One 16" pizza can serve 2-3 people, depending on appetite. However, would not re-order the garlic knots. They are essentially dinner rolls baked in a loaf with some lightly garlic-y melted butter and parmesan poured on - not the twisty, doughy, intense garlic of a true garlic knot. Update: Last night we returned to Pizza by Sal. Our initial visit on Saturday, July 28 was a huge disappointment. In all fairness we felt a follow-up dining experience was warranted. Although hesitant we went back to Pizza By Sal with the positivity required to be objective and fair. I spoke with the general manager Ashleigh and she was honest and professional and assured me it was an off night in the kitchen. We returned to Pizza By Sal on Saturday, August 24th @ 7 pm. We were greeted by the host and seated in a booth. The manager Wesam came to our table introduced himself and familiarized us with the menu. He was extremely polite and knowledgeable regarding the dining options. He returned several minutes later and we ordered a bottle of red wine and a chopped salad. The red wine was a good choice and a good start to the meal. When the chopped salad came we were pleased by the crisp chill of the lettuce that was complimented by cheese, red onion, red peppers, chick peas, and tangy vinaigrette sauce. Our opinion of our initial dining experience was fading. We then delved into our entrees. My wife had the spaghetti and meatballs and I had the spicy sausage rigatoni. This is probably what we should have ordered on our last visit. The spaghetti was hot and the meatballs flavorful. The rigatoni was just the right amount of spicy with a sweet red sauce and sea shell pasta. The biggest surprise of the night is when chef Sal brought our Margarita pizza personally to our table. He apologized for our last dine in experience and hoped this night would renew our faith in the quality of his pizza. WOW!!! Hands down the Margarita pizza was outstanding. The crust was crispy and covered with sweet cherry tomatoes, pepperoni, basil, and dollops of ricotta. We can't state with enough emphasis and joy how good this pizza was from our previous experience. Bravo Chef Sal you are an artist. Wesam suggested dessert to close out our dinner. We went with his suggestion and tried the Key Lime Pie ice cream. It had hints of coconut and graham cracker with a slight chilled taste of a tangy Key Lime. Overall, Sal, Ashleigh, and Wesam restored our faith and taste buds in how dining out should look and taste. Kudos to Pizza By Sal and their amazing staff for helping us find a new home in Wilmette to enjoy Artisan Crafted pizza, pastas, and desserts. We will be frequent return customers to Pizza By Sal for a long time coming. To quote Dr Frazier Crane and Dr Niles Crane, "What's better than a perfect meal? A Perfect meal with one tiny flaw that you can pick at all night." Amazing pizza from people who care. Last night we decided to celebrate our cat's birthday, and ordered a pepperoni pizza with the request that the pepperonis be in the shape of a cat. We could not have asked for better treatment for something our cat couldn't enjoy as much as we did. I have found the best pizza in Chicagoland. I have tried so many Chicago tavern, deep dish, stuffed pizzas over the years and none can compare to real NY style pizza that I eat in NYC every few months. Tavern style - especially when well done - is gross and reminds me of badly made flatbreads. Deep dish and stuffed are casseroles - not true pizza by any standard. True pizza has a light, airy crust with some crunch and chew. True pizza has a mild yet sturdy cheese with great flavor that compliments the pizza. True pizza has a slightly salty, well spiced sauce that compliments the pizza. All components should compliment one another and form a great flavor. This is Sal's pizza. We got 2 pizzas and the plain cheese is what I'm basing my review on. The spinach and ricotta was good, yet not as good as the plain cheese. I'll try some meats next, yet the best way to investigate new pizza is always a plain cheese. The garlic knots are non traditional in size and construction (do a google search for NYC garlic knots and you'll see what I mean), yet they are exactly the correct flavor and texture of real garlic knots. Had not even known this restaurant existed in our neighborhood and they have been open for over a year. The mushroom, onion and sausage pizza was very good. They serve NY style thin crust pizza and this is the first pizza I have had in the Chicago area that truly folds like a NY style pizza should. Perhaps they could use a bit more cheese on the topping. Next time I would order double cheese to see if it makes a difference but it was good the way it came. The Cesar salad was excellent. The dressing was an oil base versus a more traditional cream style and the greens were mixed, not just romaine. Not over the top with croutons and the shaved Parma on top was perfect. They do have a limited beer and wine selection. Perfect for families and there were a lot of families when we were there. The wait staff was excellent and they have food runners so your hot food is served hot and the cold food has not had a chance to get warm. The manager who also seated us was very friendly. There should be no surprise that this is an excellent restaurant as they are part of the same group that manages the Pomeroy in Winnetka and Sophia Steak, also in Wilmette. This restaurant group knows what it is doing. Don't miss having a chocolate brownie for dessert. One of the best brownies anywhere and fresh from their own bakery which is adjacent to the restaurant. False advertising - the $75 "family" meal is actually $77, base price, not including tax and tip. They don't say what kind of family this will serve- except for the pizza, the portions are very small. It''s a nice idea, but bear in mind that this will actually run you over to $100 to feed about four, moderately hungry people. I would say the salad and pasta are good for 1-2 people, there are four small garlic knots, the tiramisu is also good for two people, and the pizza will serve four. read more

So happy to have truly delicious east coast style pizzeria in town. LOVE that the neighborhood kids can (and do) pop in for a "slice to-go" after school. It's small but cozy and the staff is always friendly- this is what neighborhood restaurants are meant to be like. The garlic knots and meatballs are really good additions to your meal.
