This was my first time having Detroit style pizza and it was surprisingly good! Don't get me wrong, it isn't as good as Chicago's deep dish, but it was delicious in its own way. The dough was both thick and airy with a perfectly burnt cheesy crust. The pepperoni they used had such a wonderful savory flavor to it and the tomato sauce was thick and flavorful as well. Each bite was like an explosion of taste in my mouth. I ordered the Godfather, which had pepperoni, sausage, and bacon on it. I can't wait to try some other flavors! read more

I first dinned at Union Square earlier this summer on a beautiful evening after seeing some posts on Facebook about their beer garden. For those who have never been, the beer garden is down a narrow alleyway a few feet north of their store front. It is first come, first serve and the wait list is an honor system of sorts and consists of a blackboard near the pick the entrance to the kitchen. You seat yourself so you have to keep an eye on the tables as you wait, and then a serve meets you once you've found a table. They have a number of 6 person tables that can be shared amongst smaller parties as well as two fire pit sitting areas and corn hole. Their menu consists of a number of salads and pizzas with the option to get "half-pies" or "personal-pies". Their Detriot style pizza is surprisingly light and airy and has a delicious crispy, cheesy, caramelized crust. The burrata margarita pizza is by far my favorite item on their menu. The brussels sprout and kale salad is pretty good as well. All their drinks are canned but they carry some different brands including my favorite Underwood Riesling Radler. Since enjoying a meal at the beer garden, I have gotten carry out. You can order online for pick-up which makes it very easy. I will say, the pizza is still good, but not as crispy after sitting in a box but that goes for most pizza. They have some indoor seating in their storefront but it is very limited. I am happy to have found Union Squared and look forward to keeping it in my restaurant rotation. read more

Hands-down the best pizza I've ever had! -Very casual indoor space, but make sure you give yourself a little bit of time as the pizza takes longer than you would expect to cook. I got half supreme, half spinach mushroom. Also recommend the brussels sprouts salad, but perhaps get dressing on the side as it was a little bit more than I like for my taste. -Overall amazing pizza, The bread is perfected, the cheese is incredible... the only thing I would say is get a side of sauce as there's not much on the pizza. read more

WOW! This place is incredible. The beer selection is very nice, and the communal seating was fun. I appreciated the big water jugs, and the casual vibes. Note: there is limited seating. They do a strong takeout business. We went with the chopped salad (nice chunks of feta and fresh cucumber) and the spinach and mushroom pizza. It took my breath away. Bench seating was a little uncomfortable, but other chairs available. The pizza really was outstanding and filling - two slices did me in. Great spot for a father daughter date! The Michoacan Pizza is such a love letter to tacos I've had from little hole in the wall taquerias. They have a great crispy cheese char on the edges and we're obviously made with care. My hubby really digs his pizza and he heard of this Detroit Style pan pizzeria with a beer garden. Score! From the reviews, it's more of a take out place and by the looks of the tiny inside area, I can see why. Luckily, the weather was nice, so we aimed for the beer garden, which you have to exit the restaurant and walk about 10 steps to the right, walk down a narrow path to the alley to find. It was a decently sized area with 6 tables seating 6 max, 2 fire pit corner areas that seat maybe 6 max but no table to actually eat on and 2 bean bags/corn hole sets. There was a welcoming, fun atmosphere with lots of sunshine lighting up the place. They had a few boards games that could be played as well to pass the time. There was plenty of polite wait staff to have the whole area covered. The menu if fairly simple. We started with some beers from the local breweries, which we sipped on while playing bags to pass the time waiting about 45 minutes for the pizzas. We ordered Pepperoni, Margherita, Supreme and Meat Lovers type pizzas to feed our very hungry party of 12. All of the pizzas were really good with great flavor. Ingredients were fresh and meats were tasty. Good crust with lots of sauce. It wasn't overly greasy. If you're looking to dine in the beer garden, go outside of peak dining times; definitely before 7pm. It gets pretty packed. And since the pizza takes quite a while to cook, you'll be waiting a while for a table. Many other patrons came in, saw no open tables and left. Other patrons grabbed a beer and stood around stalking tables. It was hard to enjoy our food b/c there was a constant feeling people hovering over us wondering if we're almost done. I'm still talking about this pizza 2.5 weeks later. I don't think I had ever had Detroit style pizza before eating here, and now that's all I want! The crust was perfect - crispy on the outside and soft and on the inside. We got half burrata (OMG SO GOOD) and half mushroom and spinach (also so good!). The cheese was melty and perfect. We also split a caesar salad. They definitely make their own dressing, so a few bites were more lemony and a few were more fishy. Good selection of beer and cider. I can't wait to go back! read more

One of our favorite Evanston restaurants. Pizza and salad are amazing!! They have a beer garden to sit outside, but I have yet to plan far enough ahead to make a reservation to try it, but it looks really cute and is on my list. For now we just enjoy the food as take out for home. The pizza is Detroit style, thick crust with sauce drizzled on top. Pretty different than normal Chicago pizza, definitely worth a try if you are in the area! read more

This is a very nice pizza place. The inside is not very big can maybe seat 10-15 people. Bu they have an outside area which is very nice! You can play bags! They have umbrellas and a couple fire places. The large pizza serves 3 people. And their large pizzas are $24 and up. We had the mozzarella and tomato on one half and veggie on the other half. Pizza is good but it really reminded me of the deep dish from Little Caesars. I'll prolly go back to Little Caesar when I want Detroit style pizza cuz it's like a third of the cost of the pizza here but I still like this restaurant and it's ambience. read more

We stumbled on, being a regular at union pizza, and loving it right down the street. The server was super friendly even though we were early a little before opening. They had 1 beer on tap and several canned options. They a negroni slushy on tap the was really good, sweet, tangy, bitter and refreshing. Local beers are always good. We chose 2 pizzas, the bottom of the crust was crispy and crunchy the top was light and airy, similar to roman style. We got the godfather, peperoni, sausage, panchetta, mozzarella, and brick cheese. Red sauce was on top, not below the ingrediants, it did not deflate the fluffy crust. The greektown spinach was garlic, calamatta, cherry tomatoes, feta, mozzarella, and brick. Delicious crust and toppings. We got salads to start us. The ceasar salad as good as union, we asked for anchovies, and they brought the marinated white ones, think they went down the street to get. They were generous with the serving. Overall delightful experience. They have an outdoor beer garden but too cool this day , we'll try in the future. Super small place, only 3 tables, fortunately we got lucky and got a table immediately for our party of 7. We had the best hostess/waitress, I believe her name was Katie! We ordered 2 kale/Brussels spout salads (SO GOOD!!!!!) and 2 full pizza; one was the special of the day, and the other we split between the pepperoni and 4 cheese. We also ordered a 1/4 of the mushroom. There was a tiny bit too much pesto on top of it for me. Overall, everyone was super happy and the pepperoni's were super tasty. ONLY complaint was that the front door doesn't exactly shut all the way by itself so it got a little chilly during our dining experience if someone didn't either get up and shut it after someone left, Or one of the two employees caught it and closed it. read more

The pizza is "Detroit style," which I've never had before coming to Union. It comes as a rectangle, cut into 8 squares. The pizza is good and it's great that they have a large patio in the back. We were happy and impressed that they give you a small cardboard pizza box for your leftovers. That is so excellent! No plastic containers. One suggestion: Provide more than one napkin and provide crushed red peppers and parmesan so your customer doesn't spend 5 minutes trying to wave the server down. read more

Union Squared was my first taste of Detroit-style pizza. It was enjoyable on a recent evening. Menu is very focused. Nice staff. Solidly A-OK. VIBE: A small, spare storefront; one room is a carryout counter, another is a dining room with about 16 seats, mostly four- and six-tops, so communal if busy. Décor is minimal, bordering on divey. SERVICE: There seemed to be two people working the front in both rooms. Thre is table service, and our server was quite cordial and informative. Service was adequately attentive. Pizza took a while to come out, but no big deal. FOOD: Very focused menu. There were about 10 pizzas, all Detroit style, and three salads - that's it. There's a decent selection of canned craft beers, and a compact, rather odd selection of canned wine (why not more reds besides one pinot noir? - roses just don't go with hearty pizza). We liked the pizza; it's a pan pizza with a fairly light, slightly crunchy crust. For me, the biggest difference in the Detroit rendition was the brick cheese - not bad, just different from Italian style pizzas. A Caesar salad was quite plain, but fresh and tasty. The place has a utilitarian food hall vibe - not what I'd call a date spot. The people were nice, though, and the food satisfying. When I'm in the neighborhood for a show at SPACE, I usually dine at Union Pizza, but in the future I may stop in to Union Squared for an occasional change of scene. read more

This place is delicious!!!! All the pizzas are soooo good!!! We ordered the Godfather and the potato with broccoli pizza. During the summer, eat and drink on the back patio-- it's dog friendly!! Be sure to try some of their canned cocktails, they're actually delicious!! I had the gin and tonic, and thought it was really good! This is such a great pizza place! I placed an order for pickup for the Nickel city red hot pizza, and I thought I had received the cork town BBQ pizza (I must say the nickel city red hot did taste a lot like BBQ to me). The pizza was delicious, but I called back to ask if I could get a new pizza, and the store very generously said yes no questions asked. When I went back to get the pizza I realized that it had been my mistake and I had put them through the trouble of making a new pizza for me when I had gotten the right one to begin with. Everybody was very nice and gave me the second pizza despite my attempts to pay. I'm very moved by how gracious Union squared was and I recommend you pay them a visit based on the quality of their pizzas and the generous spirit that goes along with them. Thank you read more

I'm surprised I have yet to give Unioned Squared a rating! I've been coming here since they opened last summer of 2017. The GodFather pizza is delicious as well as all of the salads. Let's be honest, all of their pizzas and salads won't disappoint you. They are detroit style. They have a beautiful patio with plenty of seating, firepits, heaters, etc. Good drink selection too. I'm personally happy that they have more rosé choices! Good place for a get together with a close group of friends, nice for a date night, etc. I would not recommend trying to bring a group of 10+ here unless you call ahead of time to try to make a reservation as they get busy FAST when the weather is nice. The pizzas are good, but if you wait for more than an hour and still don't get a pizza, what's the point? Meanwhile others after you in line are getting theirs and yours is "another 25-30 minutes." Then you find out an hour in that's its only now in the oven, but is it really? You might as well buy a frozen pizza and throw it in the oven at home. It won't be as good but at least that pizza exists. The Management needs to get their act together. read more

I ordered delivery via GrubHub, so I can't speak to the ambiance or service of the store, but the pizza is my personal favorite of the few I've tried in Evanston. FOOD: 4.5 stars I ordered the PEPPERONI PIZZA and MARGHERITA PIZZA. Toppings were well distributed and the pieces were cut to be more or less evenly sized. Both pizzas were flavorful and the crust was crisp, yet chewy. Delicious! What surprised me the most about the pizzas is that I didn't feel gross in my stomach as I normally would after eating Pizza Hut or Domino's. I imagine it must be quality ingredients or less grease content. Pizzas are a little pricey (mid-$20's) for 8 slices, but I wouldn't call it a rip off because you do get a quality product. Also to their credit, I appreciate the GrubHub fee being only $3. I personally wouldn't pay much more for delivery. I'll definitely be ordering from Union Squared the next time I'm craving pizza! read more

we came here a couple of months ago (when it was still winter and cold) to pop my detroit style pizza cherry. surprisingly, i found myself really liking square style pizza. the fact that every slice gets a side of the crispy edge (two edges if you're lucky enough to snag a corner piece!) really wins me over for this style of pizza. before this, i was a fan girl of new york style pizza all the way. now thanks to union squared, i've turned over a new leaf. only downside: not a whole lot in the way of drinks here except a few beers and some mediocre wine. fast forward to last friday when the weather was beautiful and we decided to come and enjoy the outdoor beer garden here. i am a HUGE fan of the outdoor space, though was a little awkward to find. look for the sign that points down an alley where you have to make your way around the back of the building before finding the beer garden entrance in the rear. there's a firepit and plenty of heatlamps (though half weren't working because the propane hadn't been refilled) to keep you warm when it gets chilly. same delicious food and great service as the first time i came. except bonus! they now have canned cocktails on the menu. i was definitely skeptical at first - after all, when have you ever had a good cocktail that came in a can?? however while the drink was not amazing, it was not too bad either. and had just the right amount of fizz that would make it a very enjoyable summer drink when the weather warms up more. the only weird thing is that they appear to have undergone a renovation inside the restaurant itself. they've now expanded into the space next door, but looks to be more of an open concept - gone are the tables and chairs that used to be here. not really sure what's going on as we didn't go inside to check it out, but there was also a cease work order posted on the door - hope whatever it is gets sorted out quickly. read more

I never had Detroit pizza and didn't know it was even a style of pizza, ordered the chorizo pizza and kale salad and family loved both! We usually eat thin crispy crust so took a leap here and though it was thicker, it wasn't doughy like thick crust can be and it was nice and crispy on the bottom and edges. Even with Covid-19 restrictions, Union Squared is still AMAZING! We order from here at least 2-3 times a month (even before social distancing), and normally get the Detroit Michoacán. Mmm, pineapple! Really, all of their options are incredibly delicious and 1 pizza will serve about 4 people. (Maybe throw on a salad if you're not sure it's enough - I love the Brussels sprout one!) So the food was great, for sure. The service wasn't. I called in (and prepaid) an order for a barbecue chicken pizza; when I arrived, they had a sausage pizza ready instead. The people working the counter were not helpful, nor particularly interested in being so. I asked about getting a refund or getting another pizza; they said neither was possible.
