Tasty, tasty, tasty Detroit style pizza in Evanston. Love the buttery crispy crust surrounding the pizza. The personal size is perfect to share with another person as long as that other person also orders another personal pizza of a different flavor. Extremely relaxed and casual atmosphere in the Beer Garden in the back. Nice high wooden walls keep the space enclosed so you don't see the alley or the neighbors as you nosh on some 'za and drink some local brews. The waitresses are always coming around to see if you need more ice water or beer or more pizza. This is a nice change of pace if you like to eat pizza but don't always like eating the same pizza. Amazing! Perfect dinner to end the day after the Wildcats game with the family. Having relatives in Evanston, usually when I come to visit I eat Chicago style pizza, and Chicago style only. Yet, last night I decided I wanted to branch out, and when I found Urban Squared with it's Detroit Style pies, I gave it a chance. Before and during the current pandemic, I always ordered fairly consistently from here. Probably about 2-3 times a month on my "cheat days." Initially, when I was ordering through DoorDash my pizza always arrived prompt and intact. However, with the permanent switch to grub hub my pizza had consistently arrived dissembled and destroyed. While Yelp has refunded my order twice, I still am left with an unsatisfactory and disgusting-looking pizza. When I called Union Squared to inform them of this, they were very rude and nonchalant about this. During the first incident, the person assertively told me "it's not our fault, call yelp." I'm very aware of the delivery process, but given that I was ordering from UnionSquared and my pizza was pretty much inedible both times, I expected more care and compassion. And by inedible, I mean that the sauce was everywhere on the box and when I heated the pizza up all of it evaporated so I was just left with bread and cheese. During the time second this happened, I called both yelp and UnionSquared again. I thought the latter would like to know that their consistent customers are being constantly let down by yelp's delivery service. However, once again I was greeted with a rude employee who kept insisting that it wasn't their fault (despite the fact that this business HIRES Grubhub/Yelp for delivery service) and that if I wanted a quality pizza I would just have to pick it up. Again, I received no apologies! No concern or offers to send me a new untarnished pizza. But instead, I was made to feel as it was my fault for ordering delivery instead of pickup. After these two consistently disappointing delivery and customer service experiences, I've decided to withdraw my business from Union Squared. The $100 I spent here monthly is better left in my pocket. I refuse to spend my money with a business that doesn't care when my food is destroyed during delivery and doesn't invest in quality customer service. We recently moved to Evanston from the city, in an attempt to find parallel experiences from our Ravenswood neighborhood, we stumbled upon the beer garden at Union Squared. We came around 3pm on a Saturday and were somehow the only people at the establishment. The beer garden is very charming. I enjoyed the fire pits, I imagine at night they would be great. We also played bags (for free) with friends. Prices were pretty on point, loved the ability to get your own personal pizza slice and to sit outside. I imagine with more people it would be a really fun place to hang out. Definitely a nice gem within Evanston. read more

Aww man. Detroit style pizza is bae and this place is literally what pizza dreams are made of. Be aware that there are only two or three picnic style tables inside so you'll most likely have to sit next to strangers (in case you're like me and need to be in the mood to interact with others) or wait for a spot. They do have a patio when it's warm out, though. Take out is very popular for this reason. First, try the Cesar salad. The dressing is made with real anchovies and it's amazing and fresh (the small is large enough for two to share as an appetizer). I got the pesto, red onion, broccoli, goat cheese and potato pizza. I can die happy now. The crust was so damn buttery. There's a light layer of cheese on the crust so it gets nice and crispy on the edges of the pizza with that delicious buttery and pillowy yet cheesy crust that you've searched your whole life for. Flavor combo on the pizza was impeccable. Everything sang and danced in my mouth like it was the opera. I cant say enough good things about this place. The pizza is large, enough for two people plus leftovers. But if you're anything like me it's only enough for one person to eat the entire pizza in one sitting with no shame after said person has already stuffed themselves with a salad. Whatever. Yolo. I looked through the entire menu and all of the possible combinations. After careful consideration and family discussion we selected the perfect pizza. Imagine my surprise when the exact wrong pizza arrived at my doorstep. I don't know about most kids, but my 4 year old is not a fan of jalapeños. So naturally I called to notify Union Squared that we received the wrong pizza. Guess what happened next? The employee (who said her name was Adele but the pregnant pause before she shared her name leads me to believe that maybe its burner name she uses when she knows that she's providing terrible service) said that they didn't do anything wrong, there's nothing that they could do to fix the situation and suggested that I call GrubHub. But... GrubHub doesn't even make pizza bro. The complete and utter disregard for the customer experience, the lack of a solution-oriented mindset and general "whatever-ness" was incredibly off-putting. Terrible customer service! We were super excited to try this place but didn't think it would have had such bad service. The place is ran by kids that don't know what customer service is. We entered in and one of the workers asked where we were sitting? I asked if there was anything open outside and he told me to go look....where's the customer service? Shouldn't the waiter go look for you? Anyways...I went and looked and there was nothing available outside waited another 5 mins for him to get back to us and then he said he would clean the table that was available inside...which took another 5 mins after we got seated we waited 20 mins and nobody approached us to place an order!! I think this place has boss pizza. You can't go wrong. My wife and I never agree on pizza so we did the individual slices...ie yum. She's a vegetarian and I'm one when she's around (except today) and I needed meat. We have a daughter so we ate inside because she'd get sick if she was exposed to the late summer weather of late. It's nice but really want to try their patio. I almost feel like I missed out on something by not eating outside. But but but we will be back when we have a baby sitter. Hmmm, I have no idea what happened to this place. We first went there a couple weeks ago. It was small, intimate, and terrific. After a little wait, we sat at the bar, enjoyed drinks and conversation with our server, and dined on the best pizza we've had since we lived in Detroit 15 years ago. Tonight we went in and the vibe is gone. Gutted. You now go in the door next door. I walked up to the counter and the young lady said "yes?". I said I'd like a table for two. She said "what do you want?". "Uhhh, to sit down?" I replied. She told me I needed to tell her what I wanted to eat. What? Did this just become a fast food place?! After fumbling through a pile of menus, none of which were food menus (4 beer menus were scattered on the counter), my wife finally found the dinner menu. She asked if there were any pizza specials, to which the young lady pulled out a crumbled ticket and pointed to a previous order and said "this is the special". We placed our order and sat down. A minute later, we realized we didn't get anything to drink, and now that there's no table service and no bar, we had to go back to the counter. My wife asked for a beer. They asked her to pay for it. She asked if it could be added to our bill. The young lady looked up our ticket and seemed very confused. After a discussion with another worker, they determined that we had not paid for our pizza. I guess we were supposed to know that? So my wife paid for the pizza and her beer. Apparently, EVERY TIME YOU GET A DRINK OR ANY OTHER FOOD YOU HAVE TO PAY SEPARATELY!!! This is super friggin weird! Two weeks ago this was a completely different place. Once again Union Squared didn't disappoint!!! Due to covid we made a reservation for outside. Their safety protocols were great and we were a good distance from other tables. Staff were really helpful in picking out some delicious beers. Brussel sprout salad was outstanding!! Pizza to go for later was mouth watering and so flavorful!! The flavors of the pizza are decent. The crust has a great crunchy yet soft texture. But there is just so much crust, probably at least 2 inches high. The crust is not dense, it has air pockets similar to foccacia bread. On top of the really thick crust is the cheese. We had the four cheese pizza. The cheese was decent, nothing to go gaga over. There was no tomato sauce on the crust. The tomato sauce was poured on top of the cheese. When I think about it Union Squared pizza reminds me of what I imagine chessy bread with tomato sauce to dip it in taste like. Overall it was an interesting experience. I was desperately craving Detroit style pizza and was willing to travel from Oak Park to get it. Found Union Squared with a Google search and off we went. Conveniently located in Evanston with a lovely outdoor beer garden I found my pizza nirvana! Both the sausage and Pepperoni, and the veggie were hits. The crust was thick but soft with a great texture and a wonderful caramelized finish. The cheese was gooey and kept the delectable, first class toppings in place. Only negative- pop comes in cans. Found this place on the top places to eat in Evanston on Thrillist (Who I always trust as a good source of food recommendations both in the USA and around the world) Man were me and my husband glad to have found this place. The Pizza is seriously off-the-hook! One of the best pizzas I have ever had and I live in NYC! I love this Detroit pan style pizza. My husband is in this area a lot for business so he will be defiantly coming back, hell I'll also plan to come back with him just for another taste! The waiter was also super friendly and kind! Limited menu but they do what they do very well. In the summer they have a fabulous beer garden/patio that is dog friendly! They have different salad and thick pizza options and canned beer and canned wine. The open seating and shared table concept is fun. I haven't eaten inside but am excited to give it a try sometime. Community Seating. The pizza is slightly above average, but the service we got last Saturday night was shameful. I'm pretty certain the bad service was because my date and I are both minorities. Had been to the downtown location in Revival for lunch and enjoyed the Chicken Milanese sandwich, but I loved the food and service at the Evanston location. The server was very helpful with great recommendations, and the music added to an overall great atmosphere. The BBQ chicken pizza, and the pizza with the jalapeno cream were amazing. Came back here the other day and I really wanted to love this place but so far it's just meh. The hostesses, service, and the kitchen need major work. When my friend and I walked in we asked to be seated outdoors. The 2 young girls at the counter looked up from their phones and towards the back (which I found out was just the door to the kitchen) and replied that it's full but it's "communal" (I don't think they knew what this word meant or just threw it out there) but that we should just head back there. So my friend and I headed to the back door as the girls looked back down at their phones and we almost walked into the kitchen. I then tried the bathroom door thinking that lead outside, nope. Finally the girls realized we misunderstood and laughed only to say we have to go outside and around...very helpful ladies...no one took us back and it was clear yet again that management doesn't care about first impressions. We got to the back to find out that by "communal" the hostesses meant first come first serve and to seat our selves. The rest of my party showed up and we sat down. The server was kind but super off her game. We got an appetizer for the table and ordered some drinks. Fun fact: the Vodka Mule is not in fact like a Moscow Mule despite what the server says. It's basically Gingerale in a can with a hit of Vodka. Terrible. I say she was off her game because she kept saying the food would be out in a minute but it wasn't. We also had a line of dirty glasses and empty alcohol cans that weren't being cleared in a timely fashion. The food. I guess there were several mix ups in the kitchen. Our pizzas took forever and the server was gracious enough to comp one since we were served a whole pie that we didn't order to begin with, so that was worth a star for sure. When we finally got our pizzas I noticed a second order of ours came out and our server rushed to the girl to send it back. Guess the kitchen really was understaffed or what to be messing up 2+ orders for 1 table, our 4-top. Pizza is a bit pricey in general and the 4 cheese only tastes like Mozzarella. I came here this summer and never got around to writing a review until now! But let me tell you, the entire vibe of this place makes you feel like you have just been invited to the most chill summer soiree. We sat outside and we were served by Sophia, who made us feel 100% comfortable. We waited for a second and sat at a table with strangers, which just provided an experience that you don't get anywhere else in Evanston. This is what made it feel like you just walked into a casual party, the way you found your seat on your own time with no pressure and it felt like practically anyone could come over and sit next to you and start a conversation and it wouldn't be weird. Now, that's just the vibe and atmosphere. The food was on a whole other level. I had never had Detroit Style Pizza before Union Squared. In fact, I didn't even know there was Detroit Style anything. But let me tell you, this pizza was kissed by angels before served to us. Our server explained what it was and recommended some great options for me and my boyfriend. After we ordered, we got some lovely canned wine and cocktails, which were aesthetic and so much fun. One more detail to make it feel like a summer party. We demolished our pizza, which was simply an out of body experience. The entire experience was incredible, everyone felt so chill and welcomed!
