The dining area was clean with a large painting on the wall and the tv had the Cubs game on. I received my food and went home. The steak was tender but was lacking flavor. I was also disappointed in the amount of double steak. If this was double I would hate to see what it would have been without it. The salsas were good, red really has some heat, which I loved. The green salsa was herbaceous but had an overpowering citrus taste. The beans were creamy and delicious, they didn't taste burnt. The rice was also lacking a bit of flavor. I added some of the red salsa to it which helped a lot. I would go back, but I'm not in a rush.

Tania is so amazing; she even catered our wedding! Tomate is one of a kind, and Evanston/NU is so lucky to have them. The carnitas and carne asada remain the two shining stars on their menu. They are so freaking good. The horchatas are also so amazing. I didn't know how good I had it until I moved away and tasted bad horchatas for the first time. I've had burritos/tacos in Vegas, LA, NYC and Chicago (Pilsen). There have been restaurants that do some things better, but no one does carne asada/carnitas like Tomate. (Although I'm going to Mexico City/Oaxaca next month so we'll see if that changes haha) The burritos have risen in price to $11, but honestly holding pretty steady with Chipotle prices, which I consider the gold standard of takeout value. My first thought was, "This is like Chipotle, if Chipotle was actually good," and I'm sticking with that. Perhaps that can be the new slogan for Guzman y Gomez. Run with it, put it on your bags and cups, just make sure to pay me back in free burritos. It's not exactly the same model as Chipotle. You don't watch the magic happen, so there's no opportunity to request a little more of this or a bit less of that. But the staff here are so eager to please, I always find I get exactly what I was looking for anyway. If you need a little more of anything, just ask, and they're happy to oblige. Plus, this place has so many more options than Chipotle, it's crazy. Better food, better atmosphere, just better overall. During my first visit, I had the pleasure of chatting with one of the chefs, Dustin, and I could hear the passion for cooking in how he spoke about this role here. He broke down all their vegan options for me and made sure my first burrito was an absolute hit. It's probably that first visit that got me hooked, so G y G is lucky to have a guy like him. Two vegan mayos, chipotle or herb, both delicious. Pulled shiitake mushroom, seasoned beautifully and cooked to order. Perfectly cooked rice, yummy fajita veggies, salsa options galore, it was all spot on. Super authentic Mexican? No, but that's ok. "Inspired by authentic Mexican food" is fine by me. And how'd they manage to get so many friendly employees? I've been here a half a dozen times, and everyone is so damn chipper and happy to help. Plus, the music is upbeat and fun, not some dreary corporate playlist. I actually *want* to eat in, which I rarely look forward to in a fast food spot. I'm loving it. There are times when you just need something satisfying and fast that doesn't break the bank. This place brings that energy via fresh ingredients prepared with expertise. Plus, as I said, Chipotle is garbage. I'm glad Guzman y Gomez decided to pop up in Evanston.

They give you space to enjoy your meal yet are available for any questions. The ambiance is really great, with traditional music playing, great artwork and other installations. There a few TVs, playing some fútbol game. Anyway, given I know they make great food, I went ahead and tried their Mole estillo Michoacán. It was really good. I grew up, as many Hispanic families do, enjoying great authentic mole made by our Abuela or more affectionately known as Abuelita. I think I still prefer hers yet this was great to taste this style. Visited here with my parents. They went with menudo and a chorizo burrito. Both great options. Yet as my mom explained, not everyone knows how to make great menudo or mole, due to the time it requires. She really praised the menudo she had from El Pueblito #3. Then of course you can't go wrong with a tasty chorizo burrito, which is packed with great flavor. The chips and salsa were great. Always I enjoy the carrot, cauliflower, onion vinegar mix, known as escabeche. They had this sort of red salsa which had really unique flavors yet wasn't my preference. I'm intrigued which chiles they used and how it was made. Yet combining that salsa with the escabeche resulted in a better flavor. The frijoles were great and the spicy habanero salsa. The salsa de calabacita is ok, yet I prefer traditional verde or salsa de aguacate if it is green. Nonetheless, these were complimentary and great to have. Went here for a good meal ahead of my father's birthday and during St. Patrick's weekend. Great place to enjoy tasty well made food.
