Good spot for a quick bite. Walked around all morning and afternoon and needed something before taking the train back to downtown chicago. Chose the chicken tenders which were a sizzling hot portion of 4 large tenders. Breading was crispy. Not too much else going on flavor-wise but wouldn't expect much else from a fast food joint. Pretty nice casual and convenient spot. Deli fare, short order grilled stuff. They have a pretty good assortment of sandwiches. Standard breakfast for me growing up is a bacon egg and cheese. I got mine with bacon, fried egg & cheddar on a bagel. Service was fast and it was early. It hit the spot, the bacon was all tasty and crispy, the cheddar melted real nice too. Decent for what it is - a small place near campus when you need a quick fix of filling food at ok prices. The cheesy Italian beef was a pretty large size and filing although the pepper or whatever seasoning on the beef tasted a little chemically to me. Beef was pretty tender and I liked the crisp, fresh yellow and red peppers (which they classify as sweet). I would perhaps try the hot peppers next time. Fries were actually very good - crispy outside and soft inside. Service was quick at lunchtime in spite of being busy. Basic, small interior with a handful plus of tables and some decent sidewalk tables. Beware that printed menu prices at the counter are woefully low except the hot dogs are still $3.99. D&D is a basic, casual eatery next to the Noyes purple line stop. I had been craving a hot dog for about two weeks so I decided to order one before I got on the L. When I asked for no mustard the cashier gave me a judgmental look. Normally, I would be upset to be judged for my order, but I understand that mustard on hotdogs is a Chicago tradition. Overall, the hot dog satisfied my craving; I liked the full pickle on it and the tomatoes were fresh. It was pretty small though so if you are hungry you would have to order more than just one. read more

ATMOSPHERE/ARCHITECTURE: 8/10 It's nothing impressive inside, but it is a quaint place. It seats maybe 20 inside and around 10 right outside of it. SERVICE: 8/10 The people here are nice and food comes out pretty quick. I like being able to see them slice off the gyros before they cook them up. FOOD: 8/10 I've tried a variety of different items here and everything so far I felt was quite good. Gyro Sandwich - The classic lamb and beef gyro with tzatziki sauce on pita bread. The gyro itself is flavorful, not too salty and not too greasy. It was very reminiscent to a lot of Halal street food, and that is an immense compliment. Cheese Fries - Crinkle cut fries with some warm cheese sauce over it. The fries were not overly salty and overall it came together well. I was impressed. Meatball Sandwich - I liked that the bread was toasted lightly first. It gave it a nice crunch to go along with the soft meatballs and mozzarella cheese inside. The meatballs were seasoned well. My one issue with this one was I felt that there was too little sauce so it was a little bit on the dry side. VALUE: 8/10 For the price, I think it's hard to beat getting almost anything from here. Everything as far as I can recall is $10 or less. PROBABILITY OF RETURN: 9/10 I've actually already been back! TO EAT OR NOT TO EAT: Go ahead and try something out here! Here is another joint from the misty past of my college years. My friends and I lived on Northwestern's North Campus (an unofficial designation), and then in Ridge/Noyes apartments for two years, so the Noyes Street corridor was our only quick-strike food option. Back then there were only three or four spots, and we definitely frequented D&D the most. I've been in there a few times in the last year or so, and it's not changed much. They swapped the ratty plastic booths for cheap tables and chairs. The old staticy 23-inch rabbit-ear tube TV is the same but now it gets basic cable and is somehow always tuned to a sporting event no matter the time of day. Also, they upgraded their menu board, which is now much easier to read. Of course, prices have been upgraded since the 1997-2001 era, but you can't complain about that. The food is pretty varied for a grill/hot dog joint. There probably about 20 different sandwiches, from philly steak to hot dogs to grilled chicken. They have "dinners" such as rib tips and Sicilian chicken, whatever that is. And until noon they serve breakfast too, including omelettes for $5.69 which come with toast and hash browns, which is a hell of a deal. Their breakfast egg sandwich is probably the best item that I've had. Only $3.59, it comes on a great thick sesame bread with eggs cooked however you want them, meat of your choice, and cheese. Other food in the B range: Philly chicken sandwich (lots of peppers and big chunks of chicken, but too much cheese); rib tips (meat too tough, but generous portion and very good tangy sauce); pulled pork sandwich (great toasted bun and same sauce but meat kind of mushy and gloopy). In the C range: polish sausage (way bigger than the bun, too greasy, and not enough onions); french fries (slightly undercooked, mealy food-service crinkle-cut types); onion rings (the minced kind, bleah, but at least cooked to crispness); and the regular hot dogs (reliable but nothing special). You will still see the same mix of NU students, Evanston teenagers, and various older local residents. Yesterday I couldn't hear the TV or read my magazine over the amusing chatter of four ETHS girls talking about their biology teacher, periods, and making out with boys (no joke) and the annoying babble of the forty-something joker to my left who was telling his lady friend how he could prove that global warming isn't real, among other idiocies. It might have been a little early yesterday for the NU frat squad to roll in looking dishevelled and regaling each other with tales of last night's debauchery, but stop in between 12:30 and 2 for that show. I just came earlier today for a quick lunch. I ordered a double Chicago Dog with everything and a side of Cheese Fries. The fries were okay -- the frozen crinkle-cut style fries you see at a lot of cafeterias and it had warm melted cheese dripped over it. It was passable and luckily hit the spot. The dogs weren't bad at all, especially for the price ($3.65). They came with celery salt, relish, mustard, pickles, and sport peppers. Yum. I don't think I'll ever be craving dogs from DD, but it's nice to know it's just around the corner in case I can't make it out to anywhere else. Note: $5 minimum on card purchases. read more

Low quality food and unfriendly to customers. Me and 4 friends all bought food from D&Ds and sat down to eat. When our other friend came to join us with food from across the street we were told he couldn't eat with us. Keep in mind we were eating outside and the place was empty. There was no demand for their chairs. Why would they go out of their way to do that when our table spent upwards of 50$ at this restaurant?? Now they just lost a bunch of customers as we won't return. It's one thing if this place was a high end restaurant or had high quality food, but if you're selling hot dogs there's no reason to act like you're an exclusive spot. They were so rude and didn't say they'd make a one time exception or anything as we were unaware of this stupid rule. Would it had been better if our vegetarian friend bought food from their restaurant that specializes in processed meats...? Our friend had to eat alone. Weird. read more

Today will be the LAST time I eat at DD Dogs.I lived on the corner of Ridge/Noyes this past year, and thus, Dogs was an extremely convenient option for a quick bite. Usually, if I eat at a restaurant quite frequently, the establishment grows on me. Unfortunately, this was not the case for Dogs. Why? 1) The place is always dirty. There are crumbles/bits and pieces of food everywhere on the table, the floor is sticky, and even the bathroom feels unsanitary (which is why I usually get my order to-go). 2) For the most part the guys behind the counter give off a negative vibe. - I usually am greeted by a mocking or angry tone, although I really have done nothing wrong. I sometimes wonder if they just don't like Asians or really hate their job 3) Not to be picky or anything, but one time, I ordered my omelette with cheese. Right from the first bite, I realized that there was no cheese inside my omelette so I asked if they could put some in while the omelette was still hot. As a response, I got an angry "you never asked for it in the first place" so I had to show them my receipt and prove mathematically (yes I'm a math major and cheese is worth extra 65 cents) that they added cheese on my order from the start. They re-made my omelette, but the new one was so salty that I couldn't even finish half of it. 4) Finally, this reason may be the one that pissed me off the most. I'm not sure if yelpers are aware of BellyCard, but it's like a customer rewards program (1 visit/check-in = 5 points, and when you reach a certain number, you get free stuff). Anyways, after checking in recently at Dogs, I came back home to find out that I claimed a "hearty-bowl of chili" (worth 35 points)......... when I didn't........ Also I haven't seen anyone after me get anything resembling a bowl of chili. Not to make accusations or anything, but the only logical explanation would be these clowns screwing with my "I wonder why I even came here a whopping 7 times in the first place -_-" So much for a customer loyalty program. Other than that, food is mediocre (hotdogs and omelettes are okay, fries suck, they claim to have the best burgers in town but umm...... no..........) and honestly, I have no good reason to eat here anymore. Every so often, I'm in the neighborhood and can't help but stop in here for a dog. Pretty solid stuff but I need to try the gyro soon. They are super friendly and know what they are talking about when it comes to short-order food for sure. It's located in optimal location right next to the purple line, and a couple blocks away from camups. I wouldn't make it a habit to go here because your arteries won't last too long. It really is too bad this place is way the heck up on Noyes, because it would be a great snack to grab between meals. Northwestern students are lucky with this place on the West side of campus. That said, it's a mix of diner and dive. Fast, greasy, and average. The atmosphere is about what you'd expect, and you'll wonder how the heck they fit six or seven service and prep people behind the counter and in the kitchen; this place is friggin' tiny, all things considered. This is partially countered with the outside eating area, but on cold days, you're better of getting your order to-go. But don't be afraid. It's clean, it's efficient, and it's a damn sight better than the Northwestern Burger King. read more

Delicious grease - they have your typical hot dogs, gyros, burgers, and even breakfast sandwiches. My favorites there are their hot dogs and gyros. They even have chicken gyros, too! They have a lot of options and their portions are huge. Prices are decent for what you're getting and they have their own free parking lot. It's also right by the Noyes Purple Line stop so that's convenient, as well. read more
