    Soul & Smoke

As I headed for an early afternoon lunch at Soul & Smoke, I didn't know what to expect - the food…read moresounded good, but perhaps I'd have to put up with overly loud music and a not-very-comfortable environment. However, to my delight when I arrived at 1:40 I was immediately welcomed by a very nice guy at the counter named Rafael. He was able to answer all my questions about the items on the menu as well as a number of microbrews that were available. I had a $23+ reward from the InKind app that would expire by Jan 31st, so I decided to go with a couple of entrees: shrimp & grits and the brisket platter with mac & cheese, collard greens, cornbread muffin, red beans and rice gumbo, apple coleslaw, plus an excellent microbrew - real authentic southern home cookin'! The portions were abundant, so much so that I took about half the food home. I enjoyed my meal with a delicious microbrew with mandarin peel + coriander. The basic cost of my meal minus the discount from my InKind reward brought the price down to around $43, plus tip - what a deal! The restaurant was very clean with sunlight streaming through the windows (it was 11 degrees outside), light jazz playing in the background (not loud), and a clean comfortable washroom. I found free street parking a block away. When I arrived a gentleman was leaving. He raved about the delicious food - he and his wife love this place. I recommended the InKind app. They're also having a raffle for a top-of-the-line smoker with all the bells and whistles that someone would love to win. I hope you'll be looking forward to your first visit as much as I'm looking forward to my next!

I also ordered a side of cole slaw and red beans and rice. The guy behind the counter said they don't have mild sauce for the chicken. Then he told me the sauces that they had, so I said no sauce. I guess he was also relating the sauces for the rib tips when I already said no sauce. They cook the chicken fresh and may take a little time. When I got home, I was ready to dig in but I found out the sauce discussion left my rib tips with no bbq sauce. I called them and a nice lady told me I would be taken care of the next time, I visit. Thank goodness, I had bbq sauce. But I tried the tips without sauce and they were seasoned well. I put on some Sweet Baby Rays on them and dang it was good. The tips were tender and a lot of meat. The chicken was so good that I wish I would have gotten more. It was seasoned and crunchy. The Cole slaw was okay and the red beans and rice was good, just which it had a little more pot liquor. I would definitely go back. Also the prices that they have online is really outdated.

Service and the staff is super friendly. Got a two drumstick and two breast and it was only $12. Very filling and hit the spot! I don't want to sound sacrilegious but I think fans of Harold's in Chicago would really like this place ! Very limited seating there but would recommend you eat fresh there if you can. Very no frills and casual atmosphere.

Little Bad Wolf - Bad Burger and a side of mac and cheese

There's just something about a burger that actually lives up to the hype--and Little Bad Wolf does…read moreexactly that. Stacked unapologetically high, this burger is everything you want and more: juicy, perfectly seared patties layered with melty cheese, crispy bacon, and those golden, crunchy fried onions that take it completely over the top. Every bite is rich, savory, and just messy enough to remind you you're eating something seriously good. The toasted bun somehow holds it all together (barely), soaking up every bit of flavor without getting lost in the chaos. And then... the shoestring fries. Thin, crispy, golden perfection--light but addictive, with that ideal crunch that makes it impossible to stop at just one (or ten). They're the kind of fries you keep reaching for without even realizing it, especially dipped in that creamy, tangy sauce on the side. And let's not forget the drinks--just as good as the food. Refreshing, perfectly balanced, and the kind you sip slow while taking it all in (but somehow they disappear way too fast). It's not just a burger--it's one of Chicago's most iconic bites for a reason. Bold, indulgent, and absolutely worth every single napkin you'll need after. The ambiance inside is GORGEOUS!

Loved the 90s female R&B playlist they had going! Little Bad Wolf has been on my list FOR YEARS to try the burger! My husband got the burger with fried onions and I got some Bao because those also looked delicious and were a popular menu item. Honestly the 3 stars are only that high because of the service. Our server was friendly and attentive + the food came out hot and quick. Unfortunately, the food was pretty disappointing. The burger was swimming in a puddle of grease and just picking it up made your hands greasy + was dripping grease. The fries that came with it were floppy, soggy, and sad...but at least warm? I personally wouldn't order this again. The Bao were better, but small for the price and honestly were just okay? It was nice they gave you sauces you could add, but I found the Bao's to already have enough sauce so I didn't need them. Overall I left feeling confused and disappointed. I don't feel the need to come back here - Little Bad Will was a one and done experience for me.
