08/23/25 - I have been to Sissy's Sandwich many times. The food is always outstanding & this time was no exception. Usually the service is outstanding too but for some reason the service was woefully inadequate. I asked for 2 beef empanadas she brought me 2 chicken empanadas (still good) but not what I ordered. I also ordered the breakfast sandwich on chibatta bread w/chorizo, egg Swiss cheese & mayo. I also ordered sweet potato chips. This was very good. I'm not sure if the server was angry at me? I've eaten here many times before but for whatever reason she refused to acknowledge me or even look my way. I wanted more ice water but she kept walking back and forth to the other tables even though I repeatedly tried to flag her down. Finally I stood up to get my own water that's when she finally came w/the water. Oh my goodness!! This was EXACTLY what I wanted. The staff is so friendly and attentive. I ordered the BLT with fried egg. This might simply be the best BLT I've ever had. The bread is so light and airy it's like it isn't even there. The bacon perfectly crispy and the tomato brings it home. Paired with sweet potato fries made for the perfect way to start my day. Great ambiance, great vibes, great service, excellent, fresh, delicious food! Today I ordered three plantain steak sandwiches, one steak sandwich and their coconut lemonade. The food was incredible and the coconut lemonade was a nice accompaniment to the sandwich. It wasn't overly sweetened and tasted so naturally refreshing. I've had many steak plantain sandwiches but Sissy's truly delivers it super fresh and perfectly made! I swear I didn't even wait for our food because it came out quickly and it was piping hot. Sissy's is a gem to the North Park neighborhood and we love coming here for brunch every Saturday. The staff are so friendly and welcoming and no matter what we try on the menu, it's always delicious. The chicken tortilla soup is the best I've ever tried! We love sharing the aborrajados as well, and can't go wrong with the empanadas - the veggie is my favorite. Their smoothies are also amazing and priced great - the banana wheat smoothie tastes like a yummy bowl of Cheerios! Not to mention the delicious cafe con leche! I've been curious about Sissy's and stopped to grab a meal to bring with me to Swedish Hospital for when I was visiting someone. It's really conveniently located to the hospital since it's only a few blocks away. The service was friendly. They have table service but you can also order from their counter for takeout. I wanted something simple for lunch and had been craving eggs so I got a bagel sandwich. It wasn't bad, but the bagel itself wasn't great. I'm pretty sure it was one of those bagels you get in bags of six from the bread section in the supermarket. Really doughy and soft, so that was pretty disappointing. I hadn't thought to ask about how they cooked the egg; I tend to like only scrambled but this was over hard, which was good since it wasn't runny. I do wish they'd cooked the bacon crispy as I'd asked--but this is an issue with every restaurant, that they don't cook bacon enough. I also got the tamales to have for dinner since I was spending the day at the hospital, and they were good when I got to eat them. They would undoubtedly be even better warm! I liked the green because they were spicier. It came with house chips--maybe plantains?--and they were good but the tamales alone filled me up so I didn't eat many of them. The place had a pleasant atmosphere, and I'd come back again. They don't have a lot of tables but I'd like to come in and eat in and have breakfast. It's possible they have outdoor seating when the weather is warmer but I'm not sure. I didn't have a problem with parking when I visited, but I could see it being an issue since it's solely paid street parking. read more

After reading about this restaurant I believe in Block Club, I've been meaning to check it out so I did so yesterday for lunch. I appreciated how everything was made to order but I wasn't blown away overall with my experience. I wanted to check out the menu ahead of time but their site seems to be down when you click on menu. The tables they have inside are nice but it would be amazing to add some color to the walls to reflect the flavor/style of the menu. By far the Beef Empanada was amazing as was the accompanying chimichurri sauce. The rest of my order was eh. The cafe con leche was underwhelming as was the Mexican sausage (Chorizo) omelette. It was nice to taste the fresh veggies used in the omelette but it lacked some flavor. I also really wish they had salsas instead of the one jalapeño they offered. First time here and my fiancé and I were craving Puerto Rican food. The place is in front of North Park and has street parking only! I wanted a jibarito but accidentally ordered the steak sandwich which is on ciabatta bread. Regardless, the sandwich was good and Filipino. I was hesitant to write this review because I don't want anyone to find this hidden gem in my neighborhood, but I also want Sissy's business to boom so they stay open FOREVER. All I can say is "WOW!". Sissy's is located across from North Park University. It is pretty unassuming. So it is entirely possible, like me, you've driven or walked by and never noticed it. It is easy to reach by walking or transit for Albany Park, Ravenswood, and surrounding neighborhoods. The inside is so clean, warm, and there are live plants everywhere. And the vibes? Off da charts. Now, the real important part: the food. I went during brunch and lunch time. It was difficult to choose one thing, but we settled on the chilaquiles and bacon, egg, and cheese burrito. Both came with sides including sweet potato chips, rice, and a bean and corn mix. No lie, they had the best chilaquiles I have ever tried in my life. So many "brunch hot spots" try to do this dish, and they do mostly okay. But Sissy's chilaquiles wee so flavorful. The breakfast burrito was well put together and flavorful. Finally, they have delicious coffee. I was very pleased that they had more than just drip coffee, but they aren't trying to be Starbucks. And in shows in the way that their cappuccinos and lattes still taste like coffee! I will very much be back to Sissy's to try everything on the menu and even just for a cup of coffee. I've had breakfast places before and this place was amazing for the simple fact that they use Good quality ingredients. I can tell the toast was a good quality bread the crust around it was soft and I usually never eat the brown part of the bread. The taste and the portions very large. Also the sauces provided made in house was excellent. My favorite is the jalapeño sauce. Orange sauce is chipotle salsa. Was driving through the neighborhood to grab a coffee next door and noticed this new-ish restaurant. Over the years, many businesses have tried to exist in that space. It had gotten to a point that it was pointless to try any of them because of the short duration that they would be in business. Many had come and gone. Saw a few people heading in and decided to give them a go. I grabbed some coffee, a few breakfast sandwiches, fried plantains and an order of Aborrojados (Deep Fried Sweet Plantain Filled with Mozzarella Cheese and Guava). They came out golden fried and chocked full of plantains and a bit of guava; bummer no cheese was present. Pricing for the American breakfast items challenge the McDonald's nearby. Why eat the same ol' fast food when you can try something made fresh and at a comparable/ affordable price. That too by nice people with a warm greeting. All in all, decent breakfast options. Would have liked to try their Chilaquiles but for take out, the cost was high. Looking at their website I'm a little perplexed at how they describe their food vs what is served. They state themselves as "Luxury restaurant??" "Ultimate tingling of high-end foods?" Upscale? Down the line, if fans are posting pics of sensational foods and reviews of great tastes, maybe I'll try something other than typical breakfast favorites. read more

Been wanting to try this place since they opened and I regret not coming sooner! Came in around noon and was seated right away. They let us choose where we want to sit. Ordered the chicken tortilla soup, steak plantain sandwich and Aborrajados. The service was quick despite a lunch rush takeout line formed in the middle of the restaurant from the students across the street. It was a little hot inside also due to sitting near the open kitchen but it wasn't unbearable. The food was spectacular. The chicken tortilla soup was piping hot and the melted cheese with the crispy tortillas was so delicious. You could tell that soup was made with love. As if it had been stewing for hours it was rich in flavor and depth. I know now where to go if I ever need a pick me up cuz that soup just cured my soul. The steak plantain sandwich was delightful. I'm used to traveling to Humboldt Park for my jibaritos but not anymore! The only difference I noticed in components when compared to Borinquen was that Sissy's doesn't have garlic on top. I do love garlic and I'll try to request that for next time. But it's not a deal breaker. The plantains were fried perfectly and not hard to bite. They crumbled in my mouth effortlessly. The steak was juicy and the tomato and lettuce were fresh fresh fresh. The perfect crunch and not greasy at all like the latter. I appreciate the sandwich being so easy to eat, I didn't have to work too hard to chew at all. The aborrajados was a first for me and I fell in love with it. The saltiness of the cheese paired with the sweetness of the banana and tartness of the guava.. chefs kiss. These women are onto something and I can't wait to go back. P.s. I saw a Facebook post announcing the opening of this place from the owner's daughter and decided to give it a try since it's down the street from me. I'm glad I stopped by! I ordered the steak jibarito with side salad, strawberry lemonade to drink, and bread pudding for dessert. The entree came with hot sauce and passion fruit dressing, both of which were definitely highlights of the meal for me. Not only did everything taste fresh and good, but it all also felt surprisingly light yet certainly filling. The service was kind and attentive while not feeling overwhelming like a more traditional sit down restaurant.
