This is going to seem irrelevant, but I assure you I am going somewhere with this: I've had really great sushi that didn't need soy sauce, and I've had incredible steak that didn't need anything except for the salt and pepper it was already seasoned with. Now, there's nothing wrong with adding some sauce if you prefer, but it is not necessary to have an enjoyable meal. Yet, there've also been cases where without a generous helping of sauce, you are left with something dry and/or insipid. I believe this is true for pancakes as well. There is nothing wrong with butter and maple syrup... however, a good pancake should be at least somewhat enjoyable without. I regret to say the Vanilla Buttermilk Pancakes at Little Corner Restaurant needed a 'healthy' dose of butter and syrup to help lift them out of the hole they found themselves in. I found these pancakes bland, lacking sweetness and any vanilla flavor. To make matters worse, they were notably dry throughout, with almost no distinction between the outer and inner layers. I also opted to make it a "Breakfast special" which included two eggs and a form of meat. The eggs (ordered over medium) were fine in that they were prepared as requested, but had no seasoning of any kind (to be fair, there was salt, pepper, and hot sauce at the table). The sausage links were A-OK, no complaints there. I also want to give some credit to the service. It was appropriately attentive for a place like this, and the food came out quickly. Finally, where it comes to prices, I'd say they were not terribly high, but then again, what does one get for these prices? Dry pancakes, unseasoned eggs, and two sausage links that were factory made and heated from frozen or refrigerated. I wanted to give two stars... but when I realized I would rather eat something from the freezer section of the grocery store than make a return trip to a sit down restaurant/diner, that is not a sign that I can give any semblance of recommendation via the rating. read more

We tried this place again, and it still lacks flavor and preparation. The eggs over medium came out so undercooked that even the whites were not cooked through. I ordered two eggs scrambled with the onions and peppers. Both were raw. I picked the onion out and asked for the extra charge to be removed from the bill. Who wants raw onions in the eggs? Bacon was overcooked and tasteless. Pancakes have a strange flavor. Additionally, not all the food was served at the same time. Toast and pancakes took 5 minutes longer, so no toast with your eggs. read more

Our first and last visit to this classic diner. Friendly staff and large food portions, however the prices were high. We ordered the breakfast burrito and vegetarian omelette and 1 cup of coffee, the total bill was $45. Extra charges were added to the bill for the eggs (.50 each egg) and $2.00 for a few tablespoons of oat milk for coffee. These costs were NOT communicated when ordering or on the menu. I thought this restaurant was pretty good! No GF bread, so you know that's an automatic loss of a star... Anyway, I like the ambiance. It looks like it hasn't been updated since maybe the 70's and it's awesome! There's a huge counter to sit at, as well as a few booths on the outer perimeter. It's small, and I bet it gets pretty busy, so maybe try to go on an off time? The server was incredibly nice and sweet, and attentive. We stumbled upon this restaurant by chance, and I'm glad we did. I ordered the pancakes and they were not fully cooked. We ordered a side of hashbrowns but they were never given to us and we got charged for them, when we told them about how we never got charged for them they said because they gave us two pieces of bacon it was the same price. this restaurant is not a safe space for black people-- two friends of mine had the police called on them because they "looked like people who had stolen." my friends had never been there before. they also were forced to pay up front, which no other customers had to do. this isn't the first time they've had bad customer service towards black people. read more

The seating inside has a number of booths, along with a diner bar area centralized in the middle of the restaurant. While the space itself is small, it does not get too busy, at least in the afternoons during the week. This is the no-frills spot in Edgewater you've been looking for! And if you're not a fan of dining in, they have takeout as an option as well! The price is just right with whatever you order, in my opinion. If you're looking for breakfast food items, I highly recommend the very filling Gyro Omelet. Coffee is real good here too! This is a good neighborhood breakfast spot. I have been coming here on and off since the pre-Yelp days. The service is excellent and the food is good. You seat yourself (I've never had to wait for a table) and the staff is always friendly. On this most recent visit, I sat at the counter and the server gave me a menu immediately and asked what if I wanted coffee. The good service continued throughout my meal. I ordered a Greek omelette, which arrived quickly and tasted good. One interesting thing is, if you say no toast, the server offers you tomato slices. These aren't the beat tomato slices, but I ate them with the omelette. I sat at the counter, ate my Greek omelette and read the news, an all around good experience. read more

Small, intimate, and stuck in the 1980s. The music is literally from the 80s. The restaurant is really a diner. Everything from the walls, to the ceiling tiles, to the counter looks like it is straight from Ferris Bueller. The reason this place has survived this long is clearly because it is a local, dependable, breakfast place. The food was great. The menu is not so extravagant that you get lost. The coffee and tea are fresh. What a nice walk down memory lane. Oh, and definitely get the French toast as the side order, although the pancake is pretty awesome as well. The only reason I don't give this a 5 is because the place could use a donating area update. They could easily update like Manny's in the South Loop did. read more

Little Corner Restaurant is everything that you expect from a neighborhood diner. Pros: The food comes out so unbelievably quick and it's tasty. The food is extremely basic but they found a way to consistently make it good. You can definitely tell that this is a place that has a steady stream of regulars. From the few times that I've visited the clientele has been so diverse which I love! You have the cute older couples, police officers, families, etc. I love any place that attracts a wide range of customers. Even though the booths full up quickly they always have ample counter space for smaller groups. I would highly suggest going solo or with one other person to ensure you don't have to wait a long time for a seat. Cons: The bathroom is an absolute sauna! I've only visited Little Corner Restaurant during this winter but every time I've used the restroom it's been like going to a hot yoga class. Their gas bill must be enormous because I start sweating the moment I enter into the restroom. Little Corner Restaurant is not great for large groups. The front room has always been packed every time I've visited. If you keep your group to four or less people you will have a blast! Overall: Little Corner Restaurant is a great place to visit if you're looking for a place that makes a consistently good breakfast. Great little diner that we finally experienced while visiting Loyola. It's a nice walk from campus especially when it's nice outside! It was a short wait for a booth and once we sat down, it took a little longer to get drinks and our order. But, the server was really nice and once we ordered, the food didn't take long. The pancakes were the best, super fluffy along with my scrambled eggs with feta! They have hash brown potatoes that are cooked just right with a little crunch. My husband had the eggs Benedict which was delicious as well! We decided to return again for breakfast with my daughter who we were visiting and everything was delicious again. It's a shame when you support a small local business for 25 years & they let you clearly know that your loyalty is not valued. I've often eaten here since I moved to the neighborhood. When I'm alone (especially on the weekend), I'm careful not to linger (so they can turn the table) and I always tip well. I went in alone this morning. There was no one else waiting (and there were a few empty tables). The host offered the counter. I requested a booth or a table (they have several booths for two). I was willing to wait until one of them was open. The host told me that solo diners were no longer allowed to use booths or tables. For a place where the service has consistently been indifferent, the food only average and the physical space always run down, good luck treating loyal customers that way. Perfectly named, it's little and on a corner. A handful of booths and a small number of seats around an old school counter. Nothing fancy here, friendly old school service and menu. Mostly breakfast, and reasonably priced too! I like the options, I had French toast, and was able to choose between 4 or 6 slices, for me 4 is plenty. Especially since I decided to add eggs and bacon for a mere 2$. Coffee was solid also. I really appreciated that my eggs weren't overcooked, a simple thing that for some reason isn't always simple. I was going to stop at another place close-by that also has breakfast that is new in the area and drawing many people, seeing how packed it was, I gave it some thought what is it that I want to eat, hmmm just a basic breakfast. Time to give that little place across the street a try, it really looks like what I'm looking for. What a cute diner! Don't drive by- stop in! The food was surprisingly good. I had my hesitation at first but I'm very satisfied! I had the Reuben sandwich and my roommate had a supreme omelette came with side of potato and pancakes. We both very much enjoyed our food especially since it took less than 10mins to get our food! Talk about hot and ready! Loved this place. Will recommend and will return. My only suggestion is that they update the bathrooms. It's one thing to have a vintage feeling of an establishment for the experience but in some areas modern touches go a long way. :) new hardware on the sink handles or new counter or mirror or a touch of fresh paint.
