I love the cozy neighborhood vibe and ambiance, unique food choices, tasty cocktails, and fresh baked goods. I had a delicious (and strong) Irish coffee with a fantastic kale and lemon feta quiche (omg), and my beau enjoyed a wonderfully tangy Bloody Mary with a fresh plate of bagel and lox (and excellent spicy "Chi-kraut"). I was impressed by the portion size, fresh flavors, and food / drink presentation. Love that it has an inside and a patio for warmer weather. Truly a neighborhood gem. On a blisteringly cold morning, we scrambled across Clark Street to see what Sauce & Bread had in store. And we were not disappointed. All kinds of baked goods screaming out. Yesterday, we had the fried chicken sandwich and the troutmaster and split the cabbage salad for lunch. They have a lot of options - bagel sandwiches, quiche of the day, and omelettes for brunch and sandwiches and burgers for lunch. I love that they have baskets of their hot sauces out on the table so you can try all of them -- they are also amazing. Even when there is a line to order at the counter, it goes by quickly. I love to cook and often find myself wanting to make little tweaks to what I'm eating on the rare occasion that I go to a restaurant. From the first bite everything was perfect. Incredible balance of flavors. The crisp finely shredded hash blanketed in quick scrambled eggs and dressed to perfection with chili crisp and slaw made me exclaim aloud with pleasure from the first bite. The cookie has a beautiful variety of textures- crunchy edges with a perfectly restrained sprinkling of coarse sugar on top, a soft center and a lightly browned bottom. Just the right amount of sweetness to bring out but not overpower the corn and berry flavors. The person waiting on me was warm and patient and helped me analyze the hot sauces, which I ended up not needing because my dish was so perfectly executed. This place is a work of art. Please come here. It is so clear that a huge amount of work, vision and love have gone into making this place possible. They truly deserve your business. We had brunch there last Sunday before antiquing in the neighborhood. My first time, and it was a surprise... a hip diner. My friend ordered the brie quiche and I had gumbo (not usually on the menu). Both were yummy. The specialty here are the baked goods ("made lovingly in house"). Because it was a Sunday, the bakery selection was sparse. We settled on the chocolate coconut cake with ginger, and it did not disappoint. They seemed to be serving a lot of smash burgers with hand cut fries, and that's what I'll order next time. The atmosphere is small and crowded, so not a place to linger over coffee (which was great). Parking on the street, which is free on Sunday. Closed on Monday and Tuesday. Food is good but I'm tired of places trying to up charge for everything. I ordered a fried green tomato biscuit sandwich the other day, and requested that the pimento cheese be put on the side. The guy charged me two extra dollars. When I complained, he said any substitutions are charged. I told him it's not a substitution. I simply want the cheese on the side instead of on the sandwich, and he still insisted on charging me. Complete inflexibility to accommodate requests is just ridiculous. I also liked how they spiced it up with some other vegetables outside of the norm. Only thing is that the lox part was really salty, so I had a hard time finishing all of it - would recommend splitting this with a friend and maybe something else! I will also disclaimer that it took a while for me to get my order, maybe 20-25 minutes? Seems like they only had one person making all of the dishes. This is such a special place. No wonder it's a Rogers Park institution. It's also one of the places we make sure take out of town visitors to and it always ends up being a hit. They have their own blend of Dark Matter coffee made just for them, and if you know good coffee, you know that's high praise. They come up with new foods and pastries regularly and always keep things seasonal and fresh. But it is for sure gluten heavy, so come hungry and be prepared to be delighted by some of the best carbs and hot sauces in the city. Some of our favs are the homemade bagel with lox, the smash burger, and pretty much anything from the pastry case. She says it's their largest table and they need to accommodate. She doesn't offer to comp us a pastry or buy us a drink for the inconvenience. it's not like they couldn't've dragged a chair over to the end of their own table...alas. a sour taste has been left.
