We live just a mile away from Superdawg and just went here with our 4-year-old son, who calls it "hot dogs on the roof." Whenever I'm hungry for a Chicago dog and delicious fries, I immediately head to Superdawg to satisfy my craving. There is no other place like it, and it's a true Chicago establishment. I like that there are options for where you can eat. You can eat in your car and have the car hop bring you food. You can eat outside at the picnic tables. Or you can order inside and eat in their dining area. I also just found out that they provide catering! Superdawg will always hold a special place in my heart, and I hope that it remains open for generations to come.

There were two dozen stalls in which you could pull in your vehicle and use an intercom box with the menu printed on the side to transmit your order. A worker would then bring the food/drink to your parking space and use a handheld device to swipe your credit card. Alternatively, you could do what I did which was park and then walk up to a service window and order from there. Adjacent to the service window was a door that led to a room with countertop seating which served as a dine-in area. There were also a few canopied tables on the sidewalk at the edge of the parking lot. Their Chicago-style hot dogs were the featured products, however most of the menu was made up of other fare like fish/shrimp sandwiches, burgers, grilled cheese, chicken tenders, french fries, shakes, malts, sundaes, cones, etc. The price for the namesake Superdawg was now a whopping $9.30! I ordered one of those that consisted of a cardboard box packed with a poppy seed bun containing a pure beef hot dog dressed with all the trimmings. Those ingredients were golden mustard, tangy piccalilli, a kosher dill pickle, chopped Spanish onions and a hot pepper. Included in the box was Superfries which were extra crispy crinkle cut french fries. I also purchased a regular size Mellow Vanilla Supershake. I took a seat at a countertop inside the dine-in area which had only customer when I walked in. As I opened my box, it was packed so tightly that you couldn't even tell there was a hot dog inside (see my photo). The Superfries lined the top while the pickle and sport peppers also surrounded the poppy seed bun. I finished the fries first that I felt were overdone. The hot dog was normal size with a good snap to the frank. The neon green relish was unique as the bright color stood out. For a hot dog and a measly amount of fries, the cost felt high in my opinion. That being said, I didn't try a similar combo at any other spots around town for comparison. The vanilla milkshake was thick and creamy and the best part of my order. I gave a three star rating for my dining experience at Superdawg.

You may be wondering why the 13 years. First off, I live in Texas and am vacationing in the Chicagoland area for my niece's wedding. Second, while I've been to Chicago several times between now and 2013, I went to other places when I felt a gnawing craving for beef. Because I'm staying close by, my cousin thought we should check this place out. I'm no stranger to Portillo's or even the beef, which I consider the best sandwich in the entire universe. That said, I came here confident I would have another epic experience at one of The Windy City's famous exports. Man, I was right. I ended a day in which my way-too-early flight from Houston to Chicago was delayed over two hours with the No. 1 meal -- a regular beef with fries and a drink -- and it undoubtedly hit the spot. The beef was done dipped, hot and sweet, the purported traditional way to order the sandwich. I didn't need an apology which I didn't get anyway, but I sure as heck did not deserve the attitude by the manager. All the other workers were kind and professional. Patty Please in Avondale does it superbly well, but SALT leaves some to be desired. While I wasn't thrilled about the patty that fell apart after I so much as looked at it questioningly, I am willing to offer some grace for a fast casual spot. I ordered a Double with Hot Peppers, and a side of Fuego Onion Rings (note: the Fuego are seasoned with a ghost pepper spice blend - be ready for HEAT!) Other than becoming a fork-and-knife affair after the first bite, the burger was fine, The ingredients were of A-OK quality, and the hot peppers added a noticeable, but not extreme level of heat. Spots like this where the food isn't dry or insipid, while not 'winning' are definitely not losing. Then come the Onion Rings. Massive credit to the worker for warning me that the Fuego has a ghost pepper seasoning, and confirming if that's what I really want. I asked for the seasoning on the side, as not to burn what's left of my palate off. I think it's not crazy hot, but I also breathe so much fire generally that Tabasco tastes "lite-mild," so YMMV." The rings themselves were fresh out of the fryer, cooked golden-brown and delicious. These rival the rings I've ordered at some sit-down spots, and are definitely the star. When it comes to the cheese sauce, it is A-OK for commercially made and processed stuff. Amazing for dipping the onion rings into! The service is great! While it wasn't busy at the time, the food came out reasonably fast for something being made fresh. Kudos again for recognizing that I may be making a flaming mistake and warning me how much heat Fuego really contains. Finally, in terms of the vibe, everything was clean, and there was a tasteful use of easy-on-the-eyes colors, and some fun art on the walls. Final verdict: I feel about SALT the way I felt about Panera before Private Equity turned it into an abominable shell of what it used to be. Good products at reasonable prices. At the same time, especially given this is a chain, it is not worth a special trip, but A-OK if you're local and aren't feeling the Golden Arches.

That said, he tends to take me or my older brother here whenever either one of us come to visit from Texas. It's safe to say that we share his immense love for the nearly 50-year-old hole in the wall. Up until Thursday, I had two visits. For my most recent one, I ordered the Letter A , or the red hot combo. Aside from a pair of what I believe are the best hot dogs in the world, the meal comes with fresh cut fries and a drink. I confess that I didn't get a good look on the price, but I can assure you that you get your money's worth. Each of the red hots was made fresh and specific to my request. I wanted them dragged through the garden, and the kitchen staff delivered. What I sank my teeth into are a Vienna beef decorated with a tomato, sport peppers, a pickle spear, onions and hints of salt and mustard. All of which are held together in a soft bun. The dogs were paired with a delicious, abundant amount of fries. They were so good that I finished them even before the tube steaks themselves. In Chicago, it's nearly a law to keep your red hots free of ketchup and on your fries, but I ate my long taters without ketchup. That's how tasty they were. Before I forget, I should mention that there's an outdoor dining area for customers to enjoy their food at. The neighborhood Budacki's is in has gone through several changes, but the restaurant has withstood the test of time. Sadly, however, the heir to the business, Jae Lee, recently passed away.
