Oh, Superdawg...according to Yelp, I've checked in here 17 (!!!!) times, but I'm pretty sure I've been here at least 20 times! We live just a mile away from Superdawg and just went here with our 4-year-old son, who calls it "hot dogs on the roof." Whenever I'm hungry for a Chicago dog and delicious fries, I immediately head to Superdawg to satisfy my craving. There is no other place like it, and it's a true Chicago establishment. I like that there are options for where you can eat. You can eat in your car and have the car hop bring you food. You can eat outside at the picnic tables. Or you can order inside and eat in their dining area. I also just found out that they provide catering! Superdawg is a Chicago area institution as an old school drive-in business with carhop service. It's probably been over 20 years since I last visited this place. There were two dozen stalls in which you could pull in your vehicle and use an intercom box with the menu printed on the side to transmit your order. A worker would then bring the food/drink to your parking space and use a handheld device to swipe your credit card. Alternatively, you could do what I did which was park and then walk up to a service window and order from there. Adjacent to the service window was a door that led to a room with countertop seating which served as a dine-in area. There were also a few canopied tables on the sidewalk at the edge of the parking lot. Their Chicago-style hot dogs were the featured products, however most of the menu was made up of other fare like fish/shrimp sandwiches, burgers, grilled cheese, chicken tenders, french fries, shakes, malts, sundaes, cones, etc. The price for the namesake Superdawg was now a whopping $9.30! I ordered one of those that consisted of a cardboard box packed with a poppy seed bun containing a pure beef hot dog dressed with all the trimmings. Those ingredients were golden mustard, tangy piccalilli, a kosher dill pickle, chopped Spanish onions and a hot pepper. Included in the box was Superfries which were extra crispy crinkle cut french fries. I also purchased a regular size Mellow Vanilla Supershake. I took a seat at a countertop inside the dine-in area which had only customer when I walked in. As I opened my box, it was packed so tightly that you couldn't even tell there was a hot dog inside (see my photo). The Superfries lined the top while the pickle and sport peppers also surrounded the poppy seed bun. I finished the fries first that I felt were overdone. The hot dog was normal size with a good snap to the frank. The neon green relish was unique as the bright color stood out. For a hot dog and a measly amount of fries, the cost felt high in my opinion. That being said, I didn't try a similar combo at any other spots around town for comparison. The vanilla milkshake was thick and creamy and the best part of my order. I gave a three star rating for my dining experience at Superdawg. read more

Flew into Chicago late, wanted a taste of Chicago but didn't want to head back into the city so decided to try Superdawg (on our list for a while). It was almost 11pm (they're open until 2am on Fridays.) and there were at least a dozen other vehicles in their drive-in stalls. Ordered their specialties, a Superdawg and Whoopskidawg with Superfries, Chocolate Super Malt and Black Kows. Service was fast and friendly at 11pm on a Friday. We were eating in our rental car in apx 10 min. It was cool to eat outside on a warm July night in a classic, 1950s style drive-in. The food was excellent, flavorful and fresh. I normally avoid krinkle cut fries because they are usually frozen and mushy or mealy. Not Superfries. These fresh cut fries were practically fried mashed potatoes. We loved them! The drinks were perfect. The Black Kows is basically a root beer float and served with an extra root beer "sidecar." Our only complaints were about errors with the garnishes. We specifically said we wanted all the garnishes on both dawgs and they only gave us the standard grilled onions on the Whoopskidawg and forgot the sport peppers on the Superdawg. Otherwise we loved everything. We might go back next week (before we fly home) because I really want to try their Whoopercheesie Burger and maybe a Supersundae. Iconic drive-in that feels like a time capsule. I'd heard about this place so many times on travel shows that it was time to stop and I was not disappointed. I had the classic superdawg and a chocolate supermalt. The food takes a little while to come out, so be patient. The uniqueness of the drive in is pretty awesome. Even so I opted to walk up to the ordering window. It was confusing at first but I had a lot of help from the locals who are very sweet and friendly here in Chicago. First, you walk up to order at the first window and receive a ticket. Next, you wait for your number to be called at the second window next to the ordering window and pay when you get your food. Guess it's easier than I made it out to be, haha. I ordered the Superdawg which also came with some crinkle cut fries. The wiener itself was super plump and extremely flavorful. The fries were nice and crispy. Overall a decent experience. Superdawg is hands down the best hot dog in Chicago. My two absolute favorites are the classic Superdawg and the Whoopskidawg -- which is basically their version of a Polish and SO good. The Superdawg is iconic for a reason, and the Whoopskidawg has the perfect smoky flavor with all the toppings. Also, people do not talk enough about the sides here. The Super Veggies are honestly one of my favorite sides anywhere, and the onion chips are dangerously addictive. Crispy, salty, and perfect with their sauces. Beyond the food, I love that it still feels old-school Chicago with the drive-in setup and giant hot dog mascots on the roof. You literally cannot miss Superdawg from the road. You'll see the huge hotdog couple with their bright red light up eyes way before you see the rest of the restaurant. The parking lot is moderately sized (probably considered big for the city), and there are many spots to pull in and order from your car window to the little call box in the parking spot. These are set up for both driver and passenger windows to be ordered from. There are also a few tables for outside seating and a walk up window to order from that is enclosed in a little hallway like space with a few inside seats as well. We had three in our group for a mid afternoon late lunch stop after an O'Hare pick up. My dad and sister had never been to the city and I was tasked with a great chicago dog experience. We ordered at the walk up window, three superdawgs with fries and drinks. We waiting only a handful of minutes for our order and it all came in a brown bag, and we walked out to the outside table. It turned out they had only given us two superdawgs, so I went back in to request the third we paid for. They reviewed the receipt and without saying anything just provided the third hot dog and that was that! I love superdawg because the hotdogs come neatly in a little box with the fries smashed in and it's all self contained. Their hotdog with all the toppings is one of my favorites. Service is fast, and it's so nice to not have to get out of your car if you don't want. This is an iconic little joint on the northside with easy parking and delicious food, so I definitely recommend it. I know everyone has an opinion on their favorite Chicago dog in the city, so I certainly won't try to tell anyone they're wrong, but this is definitely a fun spot worth stopping at. I ordered inside the restaurant instead of the car hop intercom. The cashier is incredibly nice and helpful. I got the Superdawg, which came neatly packed in a box with a Chicago dog and fries. I've been going to Superdawg for well over 40 years, not able to go as often as I used to ...and it's been awhile. I decided to go today and was extremely disappointed.. I always order the grilled cheese on a bun and onion chips. the fries and onion chips were cold and overdone, the grilled cheese was also cold and not sure what kind of cheese they use now, but it was bright orange and kinda rubbery.. I've always remembered the iconic Superdawg mascots on the roof from when I was a kid and I love that they're still up there. You can pull up in your car and order right from your window. They'll bring the food out to you so you can enjoy it in your car. If you prefer, you can walk up to the counter and order inside. There's a small indoor seating area and a few benches outside for dining as well. The Superdawg itself is delicious. It's served in their cool packaging box with a green tomato, sport peppers, and packed in the box with warm crinkle cut fries. The Superburger is also really good, with the same neon green relish and onions you find on the Superdawg. It's also served with fresh fries on the side. Superdawg- As far as the dog goes, this might have been my favorite dog I had in Chicago. It was a plumper, thicker dog than most of the Vienna skinny dogs you get at most places. The bun was incredibly soft, and I liked how they give you a bunch of little sport peppers instead of one or two bigger ones. Easier to eat one in each bite. The fries were super crispy and delicious in their own right. That pickled tomato was a unique twist, too. Tasty! The building is cool! They have the 2 dogs on top of the roof with glowing eyes. This, or 35th Street Red Hots were my 2 favorite hot dog/fry combos of the bunch. Would give the edge of the dog to Superdawg and the fries to 35th Street. The food and the ambiance of the drive-in is just like I remember every single time, and consistency like that, that spans a literal lifetime is something truly special to me and hard to find now! Their fries are seriously the best, but make sure you get the cheese. I typically get a classic superdawg or the superfish, but they're always hot and perfect.
