Blueberry Lemonade Agua Fresca And Fried Tofu Taco
    Steve A.

Checked out this not as well known Mexican restaurant that was hidden a ways away. It looks kind of crappy from the outside but try it because it's better than it looks. Tomato is located in Evanston up north close to the Noyes CTA station. Has only to go orders because there's no dining area inside. You should call to make sure they're open because it's unreliable. A lot of people will say this hardly is like a restaurant at all. It really isn't much of an atmosphere to be honest. There's no seating inside and there's nothing inside really. No bathrooms. Of course there's lots of restaurants like this, but this is extreme though. Also the crazy ordering system is lame. Scan the QR code on the window. Order online. They also only accept cards so make sure you have the correct type of payment. As for the food it's okay but overpriced to be honest. It's about $4 for an Agua Fresca, and I had the Blueberry Lemonade. Good drink. This even had bits of fruit floating in it. Better than the food to be honest. It's about $10 for a burrito, and it's a pretty average one. Has a few vegetarian choices. The Fried Tofu Burrito is one that's vegetarian. Strange looking barely cooked tofu, and it was covered in seasoning but it helped a lot. The burrito had limp vegetables and was soggy. It did have pretty good flavor. The rest of the menu is basic stuff but pricey. Be sure to know if they're open before going. It's closed a lot, even when it's supposed to be open for the business hours. The portions are pretty small for the prices, and there's no inside dining as well as this being card only, making you have to bring the correct type of payment or whatever.

We toured the University and ended up here. My kids and I had the burritos, horchata and strawberry smoothie along with flan. All of which were ok....we picnicked on the chairs across and ate our food. All of this costed close to $80 slightly overpriced for mediocre taste.

Pineapple, mint, habanera. Not to be missed!

Just as delicious and fresh as everyone says they are. Their menu board has huge font, so you don't have to squint! Others weren't kidding when they said that there is zero seating available, literally no dining in option. There's a small board that hangs out of the wall where you might be able to stand and eat, but even that space is crazy cramped. We ended up eating in the backseat of our car. All items came with salsa, which was nice to have! We got... chicken tinga quesadilla: perfect balance of cheese to meat and not greasy carne asada burrito: not the best burrito I ever had, but definitely tasty and packed with rice and beans potato & spicy queso empanada: nicely baked, but kinda pricey for the small size pineapple+mint+habanero drink: must get!

    Cochinita pibil gordita

Good food, though nothing to write home about. Pastor and cochinita pibil pork had great flavors, but the pork itself could have been more tender. I was excited that beef tongue tacos were on the menu. The meat itself was tender, but the flavor and texture overshadowed by the sauce/spices and filler ingredients like onion bits. Tacos are just $3 to $4 each, but any extras like guacamole or cheese will easily set you back $1 a pop. We ordered a side of guac ($1) and a side of pico de gallo ($0.75) instead and we're disappointed to find that we only received a tablespoon's worth of each. The gordita was fine (I wish the masa was a bit less stiff) and the tamale was a generous portion. My order was ready in 15 minutes - nice and quick. Online ordering lets you skip the napkins and disposable utensils to go green, which I appreciate.

    Burritos in a bowl, gorditas

Got takeout from here for an early dinner. The grilled chicken and carne asada were both a bit dry. We got them in burrito bowl form, and the chicken definitely had better flavor than the carne asada. The salsa that came with it was nicely spicy so that helped a bit. The gorditas were soggy. This may be because we got it as take out? The tilapia was breaded but it wasn't crispy and there wasn't much in there so you taste mostly the beans. Overall, not bad for the price. It can get expensive if you add additional items to the burritos though, given that it only came with the meat, beans, and rice.

    Nachos with Chicken Tinga

This place is absolute ! It is so delicious and definitely a favorite of mine when I'm in Evanston/visiting Northwestern. Tomate is a bit of a hidden gem and everyone I know on campus absolutely adores the place, and for good reason! I ordered the nachos and added on chicken tinga (they usually come with ground beef) and a horchata for pick-up. Both were incredible! Especially the nachos - they had the perfect blend of meat, beans, cheese, and toppings! It was seriously delicious. The horchata was a bit on the too sweet side for my taste, but I know plenty of people who like it very sweet so it's just personal preference. The portion sizes on both were great, and the price was very reasonable. I don't think more needs to be said - GO! Definitely worth trying.

Got greeted by a friendly host and even friendlier waitress, both who were accommodating all night. The tacos are pricey, but two will fill you up (and im a big eater). I got the Al pastor and Alambre -- both nearly overflowing with meat, and just the right amount of toppings, with room for salsa. Salsa wasnt up to my spice level, but very tasty. Ate food with a Margarita, which was offered smoked with Mezcal or regular tequila, and that too was a bit pricey, but again, you savored every sip with that tajin covered rim. 10/10, and would recommend for date night. P.S. No pics because everything and smelled looked too good I was so busy eating!

I was a little frustrated that we were not told before seating down. We decided to stay anyway. Started with Guac and chips. Unfortunately the guac lacked flavor. We asked for lime and salt to add to it. Then we ordered steak and lengua tacos. Not the best carne asada I've had. Maybe it was a bad day for the kitchen. We finished our night with a flan for dessert. It was ok. Definitely not original flan. Maybe I'll give this place another change the next time I am in town. The staff was nice and polite overall but the food has room for growth. Cute and cozy decor overall.

We were both hungry after (her probably a little hungrier from a long day of matches) and i suggested we find something casual in the area. I'm always blown away by how far Evanston has come since my college days and wish we had 1/4 of the amazing restaurants they have now. My daughter was in the mood for tacos so we stopped in here. I quickly realized this was in the same spot of one of my favorite college spots, Lulu's, which had sadly burned out. I was beyond excited when they said they still offered Lulu's menu. I have fond memories of their ginger chicken salad. I ordered the lulu's bento box, which included my favorite salad. The ginger dressing and crunchy noodles on top were as amazing as i remembered. I immediately texted my college friends about what i was eating and we all agreed it was the best salad ever. It also came with sesame noodles, cucumber salad and dumplings. It was a lot of food and not the healthiest meal, but tasty! My daughter enjoyed her tacos as well...and both of us also liked the complimentary chips. Our waitress was lovely and attentive and indulged me as I told her over and over how excited i was to be eating my favorite college salad 20 years later. Next time I won't wait so long to come back!

My first thought was, "This is like Chipotle, if Chipotle was actually good," and I'm sticking with that. Perhaps that can be the new slogan for Guzman y Gomez. Run with it, put it on your bags and cups, just make sure to pay me back in free burritos. It's not exactly the same model as Chipotle. You don't watch the magic happen, so there's no opportunity to request a little more of this or a bit less of that. But the staff here are so eager to please, I always find I get exactly what I was looking for anyway. If you need a little more of anything, just ask, and they're happy to oblige. Plus, this place has so many more options than Chipotle, it's crazy. Better food, better atmosphere, just better overall. During my first visit, I had the pleasure of chatting with one of the chefs, Dustin, and I could hear the passion for cooking in how he spoke about this role here. He broke down all their vegan options for me and made sure my first burrito was an absolute hit. It's probably that first visit that got me hooked, so G y G is lucky to have a guy like him. Two vegan mayos, chipotle or herb, both delicious. Pulled shiitake mushroom, seasoned beautifully and cooked to order. Perfectly cooked rice, yummy fajita veggies, salsa options galore, it was all spot on. Super authentic Mexican? No, but that's ok. "Inspired by authentic Mexican food" is fine by me. And how'd they manage to get so many friendly employees? I've been here a half a dozen times, and everyone is so damn chipper and happy to help. Plus, the music is upbeat and fun, not some dreary corporate playlist. I actually *want* to eat in, which I rarely look forward to in a fast food spot. I'm loving it. There are times when you just need something satisfying and fast that doesn't break the bank. This place brings that energy via fresh ingredients prepared with expertise. Plus, as I said, Chipotle is garbage. I'm glad Guzman y Gomez decided to pop up in Evanston.

They were all very nice and welcoming. We chose Comida for its vegan options to accommodate two in our group with dietary requirements. There were just a few options, but enough to make choices. For the vegan dishes, we placed an order for 2 of the Kamoosh De La Choza. For this dish we asked that the sour cream be omitted, and that the vegan queso be substituted in place of the original queso. We also opted to "add a protein", the vegan chorizo. Soon after placing our orders, the waitress returned to let us know that there would be a $17 upcharge for each vegan queso substitution. We all looked at each other a bit dumbfounded. An order for their regular queso is $15, and an order for their vegan queso is $17, so wouldn't it make sense for the upcharge to be $2 to substitute it on the dish?! We, ultimately, decided to order one Kamoosh De La Choza, and an order of just the vegan queso. I've had and made, many a vegan ques., some, with or without cashews. This queso missed the mark for us; a bit odd in flavor and too thick to be called queso. The Kamoosh De La Choza was, otherwise, flavorful with the added vegan chorizo. The rest of our party enjoyed the burrito and enchiladas. The portions here are all large which is a plus.
