Stuffed chicken breast with potato pancake, carrots and beets
    Mike H.

One of my colleagues let me in on his secret lunch spot, and it was Helena's Magic Kitchen. The food stall is among many options in the Village on the Grange next to OCAD, but it consistently has one of the longest lines. The stuffed chicken breast with spinach is amazingly flavourful, and I order it every time with potato pancake & beet salad for a perfect meal. The chicken is meaty and juicy encased within a crispy outer layer. The kitchen also offers other east European menu items including various pies, quiches, meatloafs, veggies and soups that are all made fresh. Once the limited quantities are gone, that's it for the day. It's a really good deal so don't mind taking food away from OCAD students, they can have less healthy alternatives like McDonald's nearby. There's a reason why Helena's Magic Kitchen has been around for about 20 years. The kind Korean couple who run the show now is creative with the dishes and works quickly to take care of your meal selection.

It certainly seems like magic the quality and quantity of food you get for the prices. We moved offices and this is now my go-to spot. I've tried the combination platter (pictured), the chicken breast, and the stuffed chicken breast. The latter is my favourite so far. Note that there's usually a line so try to go earlier or later to avoid the lines. They cook a lot of things in real-time so it's fresh, but contributes to the longer lines. Do yourself a favor and give them a shot.

The magic of Helena's Magic Kitchen rests in the fact that you can get a wholesome, on-the-go combo for under $8! So what makes Helena's menu of quiches, pies, cold salads, pierogies, cabbage rolls, soups, stuffed chicken, chicken of the day and potato latkas wholesome? Unlike many fast food options out there, Helen's seemingly from-scratch cooking is creative and healthful. Unlike other fast food options at the same price point, you don't taste an overuse of salt. Instead, it feels like Helena's is always trying to hold off on the flavouring to let the ingredients shine. To some, this might mean flavours of some of the sides seem lackluster, but for me I think it's just right, especially paired with the flavourful pies and quiches one can get as the main. Speaking of pies, I'm always impressed by what's on the menu for vegetable pies. Thus far I've tried the spinach pie, mushroom pie and Crepes pie which were, especially the mushroom and Crepes pie, delightfully unexpected. Elsehlwhere, I'm used to the usual spinach quiches, but, at Helena's, I'm sure to always find something intriguing to try. If you like savoury pies and appreciate some good side salads to go with definitely stop by. Note that the best time to drop in is earlier in the day, when the full daily menu is available. Once evening descends the options dimish dramatically!

Terrific place for lunch! ATMOSPHERE: Homecooked goodness. Located inside the food court at The Grange, the place is a student hub. Amidst various selections here, Helena's stands out with their food. SERVICE: Friendly. A lovely couple run this place! PRICE: Average food court-type prices. There are lots of options just to order single items, or get combos for lunch which includes 1 main and 2 sides. FOOD: Fried potato latkes are AMAZING. Served with a huge dollop of sour cream - it's available as an add-on or as your main. I also love ALL their savoury pies and quiches. Such a great selection to choose from. But remember: Get there EARLY or they may be sold out of most of their delish pies and quiches. Their sides are super tasty! You'd think it's only the mains that keep them going, but don't overlook the various veggie/salad side dishes. I've been trying to order something different every time - and I'm never disappointed. Highly recommended.

    Periogies with beets and potatoes

Great food option if you're in the AGO neighbourhood. Everything is fresh, homemade and full of flavour. You cannot go wrong with their offering of six periogies with two sides for $6 (including tax)! Be advised: these are not frozen, they're homemade, traditional periogies made with potato and cheese. I visit this place at least a few times a month and have converted a few co-workers into loyal customers as well. The couple who runs this place are also very nice and efficient.

honestly im quite upset about this place. i have bought my lunch from here at least two times now and each visit was a disappointment... the first time i went i ordered the potato latkes with the green quinoa (it was quinoa with maybe cilantro idk?!) and the potato salad. the latkes were a huge letdown. it wasn't exactly too flavourful and idk it just didn't do my tastebuds justice. the quinoa thing was absolutely dreadful dear lord never again. and for the potato salad, it was the only remotely edible thing **i bought this before the lunch hour and my food was not hot.. not even that warm :( the second time I went I ordered the shepherds pie because GORL I LOVE SHEPHERDS PIE AND I WAS LEGIT SO HAPPY I FOUND A PLACE WITH SHEPHERDS PIE (yall hit me up with some bombass restaurants or food joints with shepherds pie plsss) for the side orders i got the potato salad again and tried the coleslaw this time . first of all it was yet another let down again .... like the meat was alright but the MASHED POTATOES MAN WHYYYYYY I'm really particular with my mashed potatoes like they gotta be smooth like a baby's bottom and buttery and just NOT GRAINY OKAY AND CLUMPY BUT IT WAS EXACTLY THAT .. GRAINY AND CLUMPY (D::;) but yeah potato salad tasted weird this time but the coleslaw was okay ** food was again not hot and not warm overall im PROBABLY not gonna come again (i do wanna try the stuffed chicken breast) but yeah despite all the good reviews HOMEGIRL can not give this place a lot of stars :( IM SORRY THE COUPLE THT WORKS THERE

Best place in the grange by far. Healthy, fresh and tasty food. Totally different style of food than what you usually find in a food court.

When I went, there were 22 fried wing flavours and 4 baked flavours. I visited on a Sunday at around 5pm, and it was already bustling with customers and music. Saw from another review that the baked wings were good, so that definitely took up one of the pounds/flavours. For the two of us, we shared the 3 pounds deal ($23.5 +tax instead of $47): - two pounds fried (Dragon Breath, Honeycomb Heaven) - one pound baked (Bollywood) - carrots/celery - one dill sauce for each pound of wings I also got a pint of their Canadian sub-zero draft. It was splendid with a balanced amount of malt due to the cold temperature shielding the hops that would have otherwise turned me away. Some of the flavour names were questionable, lol, but I wouldn't have any better naming conventions either. Bollywood baked wings had tandoori spices and were marinated in yogurt. Dragon Breath was really just coated in a buffalo sauce rub, and Honeycomb Heaven was like honey garlic with a lot of honey and just a touch of garlic. The fried ones didn't have as much chicken nor the flavour of chicken on its own, and were kind of dense and dry. Still better wings than the chains I've tried though. Honeycomb heaven was just alright; something I would find as a go-to comfort zone pick. Dragon Breath was too spicy to enjoy, and I had to soak the wings in the side of dill sauce to remove the tangy heat - an amazing combination that maybe needs to come pre-dipped. Baked wings are meaty and fresh, just like how homemade oven-baked wings are, but the Bollywood marinate really blew me away. I believe my exacts words were "why get dry tandoori chicken when you could have fresh tandoori wings?" If they introduced more baked wing flavours, I'd choose the baked option for every single pound of wings I'll ever get. Now onto ambience. I didn't recognize the music which was good because it served as the perfect background noise to my wing munching trance. And it was lively and nostalgic enough that I felt like I become one of those locals in a diner in a small town that would visit weekly for a dose of wings. I liked that everyone was either eating or in conversation, and that the server left me alone to enjoy my food. In the end we counted the bones, and there were 21 wings. Around 7 wings per pound, it looked and tasted like like a lot more meat than if I had gotten the same quantity at St Louis. 3 pounds of wings + a pint came out to be ~$35 after tax. Very nice - I will be back.

Food tastes great, ambiance isn't bad. I've been there 3 times this year so far for their Sunday…read morehalf price wing deals, but every time I go, I am NOT impressed with the service. They did have coffee & tea so that was good for an early morning drink! I really liked the fried chicken burger. It didn't have much seasoning on it. We were seated and then greeted right away by our waitress. She gave us menus, but then didn't come back for about 15-20 minutes to take our drink orders. We each ordered a cocktail and they arrived within 5 mins. and all looked amazing. We had the Marissa Harissa which wasn't mine but I swapped for it because it was so tasty lol. It was spicy and a little sour and a little sweet. Very yum! I had ordered the Velvet Figue, which was tasty but a ittle on the sweet side for me. We also had the Amal Old Fashioned which was fantastic. My husband and I both said it was one of the best Old Fashioneds we'd ever had. The last one was the Amal Espresso Martini which was good but unremarkable. We waited about 20 minutes before our food orders were taken. We ordered several things to share. The first round came out around 10 minutes after ordering, which was good. We had the dip sampler and chose the hummus basil, baba ganoush and muhamarrah. The hummus basil was wonderfully smooth and had a great basil flavour. The baba ganoush was nice and creamy. The muhamarrah had a very nice flavour but was very sweet which was a little off-putting to me. I didn't hate it, but wouldn't order it again. We had the kibbeh which was fantastic. The texture and flavour were both perfect. We also had the spicy fingerlings which were great! They were very spicy and the sauce was lemony and so delicious. I actuallly mixed some with my muhamarrah to cut the sweetnss and that really helped. The rest of the food took about 20 minutes to arrive (after we finished the appetizers). We had the skewer platter for two and it was so delicious. The pistachio kabab was out of this world good. My sister doesn't usually enjoy lamb, but she liked this. It was spiced perfectly. The other two were very good too. We had the vermicelli rice, which was very nice. I make this at home so I'm familiar with it and really enjoyed it. The texture was perfect. Lastly, we had the pickle plate which was very interesting. The eggplant pickle was different from any pickle I've had before and was quite firm, which I wasn't expecting. It was tasty. We ordered a bottle of Lebanese red wine which was a very nice accompaniment to the skewers. All in all, it was a lovely evening. Our server was very nice and friendly and the food and drinks were very good. The 4-star rating is partly because of the very slow speed at which the food came out. I'd have given 4.5 stars if that was an option We would return.
