Came here with a large group for a trivia night! This was a fun spot for casual drinks and dinner. Given this was a special event, it was jam packed on the first floor but I was pleasantly surprised with how fast we got our orders taken and how quickly they came out. There was a lot of variety on the menu - I had the Thai Chicken Salad and I actually really enjoyed this! Tasted pretty fresh and the large portion size was very filling. Other standouts at the table included the fish and chips, Cumberland burger and Jambalaya. The prices reflect a typical Toronto pub in this area. There are a few separate floors but one thing I will call out is that it can get really hot in there - especially if you end up sitting right under one of their ceiling pot lights. read more

Good sports at with great food and service. Been her a few times when visiting Toronto

I liked the covered patio location with plenty of sunlight in the patio area if the weather is good, or indoor seating if that's your preference. Hemingway's is a combination pub and restaurant, with signs for various events (trivia night, and other I didn't catch a glance of), though leaning towards the pub side with TVs with sports on and a full bar. I went in the afternoon, a little after 12:30pm. We were seated quickly, but service was slow, and my part had to to wait for quite a while for the drinks, then much later, the food, to arrive. We pre-emptively asked for the bill when they arrived with the food since we weren't sure how long they would take to get back to our table in the afternoon. I got a Pineapple Mule, a zero proof drink and it was great. Tangy with a copper mug to make it a delightful sight. The food however, was pretty bland or too salty. I got a Kiwi lamb burger, which didn't have a strong flavor at all. I expect rosemary and lamb to shine, but I didn't get either in the burger. The burger toppings and the ketchup they handed me saved the meal. My party echoed flavor issues, but more so that their entrees were too salty. Mixed on the food being either too salty or too flavorless, but the portions were nicely sized at least and we had good drinks. Fries were decent at least, along with the poutine and calamari we got for the table. I would go again for the drinks and the shareables. read more

We made a reservation for Friday lunch on the patio to make the most of last days of summer and patio season. We were seated very close to the bar and we could see everything coming out of the downstairs kitchen and being served to other customers; everything looked so delicious. We ordered "Thai Chicken Salad". The ingredients were fresh and the sauce was very delicious. The service is fast and staff are friendly. Parking could be a challenge here, but it's perfectly accessible through subway. read more

The service was a bit slow at first , I asked for my Soup first and they could not get it right. Soup was just a lot of cream and celery, not much clam! When my main meal came, I could not eat it. I had Poutine but, it had a weird taste and had a lot of pepper on it. They took it back along with the soup. I ended up with plain fries that were so greasy that I could not eat them, a lot of grease!!!! I will not ever return. read more

In one sense, I love this place for what it is, having a bunch of seating both inside and a giant patio. It's a classic (albeit larger) pub with no pretense which is nice given the otherwise upscale surroundings. They also do lots of community things, like trivia nights and down to being quite specific (such as for a single TV show). I hope Hemingway's continues to go strong. I can really only give an average rating however since the food is pretty mediocre. I'm not in any way wanting or expecting them to match the Yorkville vibe, but they could make the menu and food a bit more interesting. Or even if they largely stuck with the same menu, just having it taste better than it was. With all that said, it's still great to have a reliable watering hole and a big rooftop patio in the summer can help you forget about whether the food could be a bit better or not. read more

Would go again for the food though. Service (6/10): Server was nice - they subbed out the french fries for sweet potato fries for us. Took a while to place our order and get the bill though. We stopped by Hemingway with friends after visiting a museum. The décor isn't particularly memorable, but the space feels cozy and comfortable enough for a relaxed meal. Service started off very well, and the food overall was decent. The only dish that missed the mark a little was the Greek salad, which was a bit too oily for our taste. The main issue was the pacing of the meal. We specifically asked for the salad and appetizers to come first, and for the hot dishes to follow once we were finished. Unfortunately, the mains arrived before we were done with the starters, which made the experience feel a bit rushed. All in all, it wasn't a bad visit - there were some nice moments- but with better timing and a bit more attention to detail, it could have been much better. read more

I had lunch today with my friend, Rockell, on the upper patio at Hemingway's. I had Butter Chicken (Chunks of chicken in a smooth Indian curry sauce, served with basmati rice). It should have come with veggies on the side but I said I didn't want any so they gave me extra rice. Rockell had an Out of Bounds Chicken Salad (A tender, grilled chicken breast laid on a bed of mixed greens, tossed in our house raspberry vinaigrette, with tomato & sprinkled with sundried cranberries, feta cheese & spiced pecans). Met my friend at the subway exit and just decided to come here for lunch. I've been here before for different events. I ordered the mimosa special for drink and ribs meal special for lunch. The food portion was pretty big. I couldn't finish it so I had to take home. I had another mimosa as well. We sat on the 2nd floor patio and did some people watching. The waitress was great, came to ask us at the right interval as we wanted to chat more. Glad we were able to catch up without feeling rushed. It was a very sunny day too, but not too hot. 8/21/25 - Beef rib BBQ special with Caesar salad and fries super delicious. Meat so tender. Perfect with a glass of red wine. 8/22/25 - The jambalaya was at a spice level to my liking (on the spicier side) with generous portions of chicken, shrimp, and sausage. Paired well with a glass of white wine. 8/22/25 4 stars - The chicken sandwich and fish batter for the fish and chips lacked flavor. The fries, however, were a hit. Nice crisp and tasty. We were seated on the patio in a rainstorm in summer and it was very nice. The view is nothing impressive but it seemed less noisy than the rooms inside. The food was good (I had pad Thai, my son had a burger) and decently priced for the area. Portions were good, service was fast and efficient. I first went there for Taylor Swift trivia, which was quite lively! Great atmosphere, greasy hosts, great special drinks menu. I've also been once on the rooftop patio, which is a lovely experience. But I also once stopped by with friends looking for a place to drink and chat, and it ended up being quite unsuited - crowded, rowdy, very loud music downstairs. If you can't find a spot on the rooftop, it might not be worth it. read more

The service & ambience was great. Well, we thought the food was good too . We're very disappointed because we were visiting and were enjoying the museum so we asked one of the museums curator about restaurant recommendations and Hemingway was highly recommended. We decided to go and had lunch at Hemingway. We enjoyed our food and as i mentioned the service was excellent too, if we didn't get the food poisoning it would have been a great experience! I had the Eggs Hemingway and my husband had fish and chips.. our kid didn't order fish but we shared our food to her. Unfortunately she also had upper and lower GI issues more milder than myself and my husband. We called the restaurant and unfortunately no one answered so we were unable to leave a message since the vm was full. Im sorry for the review but your food made us sick. read more

First off, location is great for this restaurant. The lamb burger was okay. The meat was over cooked and dry. The lamb tacos were also okay but once again the meat was over cooked and dry. Grilled Salmon Salad was good. Pavlova was overly sweet and could use some more fruit. Service was alright and outdoor seating was good. Probably wouldn't return to this restaurant. I've been to Hemingway's a few time and I must say Its always a good time. Firstly, the laid back ambiance compared to the surrounding establishments. This place is always welcoming. 4 floors of seating available. Multiple leveld of rooftop patio seating available to enjoy the warm weather. I haven't had to wait longer than a few mins for a table. The servers are nice and the service is efficient. Menu is broken down into categories and caters to most. There is no parking but thats expected for this location. read more

Slowly emerging out of quarantine and enjoyed the patios for the first time this year! Hemingways has a special place in my heart. A huge multi-level outdoor patio. I remember it being a fantastic place to hang out with co-workers, for date night, or to chill with friends, and it still is. The vibe going on here is still the same from what I remember visiting years ago, bustling with a few people lining up outside on a weekday night. We didn't have a reservation since the online reservation is full, but we tried our luck and arrived at the door and was promptly seated with little to no wait. Just by providing my number to get in line, the host had my name from when I booked years ago. We were seated at the bar area, where there are clear dividers between each set of seats. The spacing is good, and the staff are all wearing masks and super attentive. We ordered from the Tried and Trusted and Old Faithfuls section of their menu: Jambalaya $18 New Zealand Lamb Shank $19 Ginger Brick $11 - Absolut Mandrin vodka, 1⁄2 pint of Brickworks Cider poured over ice & topped with ginger beer Beer on Draft $8 - Triple Bogey - Shout out to all the golfers out there! People may associate Hemingway's as just a bar for after work, but I'm surprised that their food is pretty good and all at reasonable prices, especially in Yorkville. The Jambalaya, was flavourful. However, my favourite was the fall off the bone lamb shank. The cocktails and drinks have always been good when I get them here. You'll likely pay more at other joints in the area. Something new I learned recently is Hemingway's is a New Zealand-themed restaurant/bar. I'm so glad they are still kicking around after COVID. I honestly don't understand how the ratings are a 3/5 star. Good food, terrific drinks, great unique casual spot all in Yorkville? It's a gem. A staple for every trip to Toronto, a great spot to start or wind down the evening. I've been coming here for the last 8 years, and have never had a experience less than great. I've been in for just appetizers and enjoyed my experience, I've dined here for dinner and have lovely meals, and most recently stopped in for drinks and dessert on the roof top patio and had a really nice evening with my spouse. The menu has lots of choices for all tastes, and the drink selection is equally as vast. It also doesn't hurt that they have Somersby hard cider which is one of my all time favorite forbidden fruits that we can't get in the US. This should be on your list if you're in the GTA, and find yourself wanting to get out and explore. Love the Kiwi read more

I have been coming to Hemingways for years (over a decade) and my experience on February 26th 2024 has me questioning if I want to come back. I got a lamb burger and poutine but honestly the food was crap and the servers were too busy focusing on their own personal gossip to worry about doing their job. When I got my poutine I was told it was in the oven. The poutine was placed in the salamander with the gravy on. I know this because the cheese on the poutine was burnt and the gravy dry. I know from experience working in restaurants that someone forgot about the food on the line and it was put in the salamander grill to keep warm. Between the staff that only cared about chatting with their friends and the food that was garbage I doubt I will be back here. Not sure what happened recently but Hemingways has gone very much downhill. The quality has plummeted recently. read more

I have been going to Hemingway's for 20 years and am very pleased to see it still going strong after the pandemic. A great spot for a drink on the upstairs patio, winter or summer. It seems like nothing has changed. Went to Hemingway's on a Tuesday night and the vibe was really nice. Recommend the patio on the summers! The fries are really good and I recommend the fish tacos because of the large portion size - however, the cheese wasn't melted on top which was a bummer. When we passed by the restaurant has a nice outdoor patio area which appeared very nice, a few couples were having what appeared to be a nice Sunday dinner. We opted to sit at the bar and have a drink while we ordered food to go. We had to ask to have bartender to clean off the bar, but the she decided to sit our menus on the dirty bar, then I reminded her it was dirty.. she half cleaned our area and left the areas right next to us dirty. We ordered two lemon drops, the lamb shank and a Greek salad. The drinks were good, the food arrived timely, however; I must add the bartenders were having their own party in the next area over and weren't too concerned about us at all. We finished our drinks and just sat waiting for our food, by the time we were offered another drink we knew our food had to be coming any second, which is exactly what happened, so we declined. The lamb shank was okay, the veggies were overcooked.. I took a picture but they look so horrible I'm debating if I want to post. The Greek salad was good...My husband left a tip with the bartender because that's what we're accustomed to doing, she did serve us to some capacity, but he left 5.00 instead of 50.00 or 100.00 which is what we typically give for good service, depending on the bill. I hope the owner does a pop up. This restaurant is in a prime location and top rating will definitely help. I'm sad I couldn't rate it a 5. I went to Hemingway's for Christmas dinner with my Meetup group. I really wanted a turkey dinner with all the traditional sides and I had heard good things about this spot. It was pretty busy when we arrived so there was a bit of a wait for our table. It was also quite noisy but that's to be expected for a pub, I suppose. The turkey itself was super dry, so we all ordered a few extra sides of gravy. Most of us has ordered dark meat for our dinner but it was mostly a mix of white and dark. The whole experience really was like going to a family dinner. Very casual, nothing fancy and the food was decent. The price was fair for what we got (especially for Yorkville) so no real complaints here. Service was friendly and we all had a nice time. When looking for a restaurant these days, ample space has become top priority. If the space is a covered patio, all the better to enjoy the short summer months! Hemingway's has both and therefore receives an extra star for it. Their rooftop patio is large and can accommodate several tables safely with plenty of walking space in between. Plastic partitions provides even more protection. Make a reservation if you don't want to wait. Food is typical pub options. I had the fish and chips (substitute for sweet potato fries). My fried fish was on the salty side, but was well battered and the piece of fish was large and moist. The rest of my party had a burger, the seafood pasta and the steak. We came here for dinner before heading out to Nuit Blanche. We ordered the steak and New Zealand lamb. The steak was okay. There wasn't anything wrong with it; just basic. No real wow factor. The lamb was amazing. It came with roasted root vegetables (some were a bit undercooked), mashed potatoes and the lamb had mint gravy on top and that was the star of the dish. The hints of mint really gave the gravy a good, welcomed kick. Honestly, I would've liked more gravy to have with my mashed! The total came to be around $60-$70 (we also ordered a beer) which is expensive BUT it's downtown price. Give the quality and location, this was a very reasonable price. Speaking of the atmosphere, we went around 7pm and sat inside. I know that this place does get busier throughout the night. When we were there, it had a more restaurant vibe than a pub. I'm sure later in the night it would get louder and more lively. So depending what vibe your looking for, keep that in mind! read more

This isn't necessarily a hidden gem in the heart of Yorkville but for its price range and the deliciousness of its meals, it certainly is a gem of sorts! We were lucky to have made a reservation the day before as there was a long line up by 5:30pm and the first floor/bar area seemed already jam packed. We were immediately seated on the rooftop patio by the TV and edge of the roof so it certainly felt more spacious than it actually was. The servers were nice but throughout times, it felt they were scarce. Understandably so as each dining level seemed packed. I ordered clam chowder to start. While I hadn't had many before hand to compare, it was absolutely delicious. It was so creamy and had enough potatoes and clams to get a good mouthful with each bite. I may even go back just to grab two of these and call it a meal. As for the entree, my friend ordered the lamb curry where I ordered the grilled salmon. The look on our faces was just in awe. For the price of under $22 for each, we felt it was an absolute steal. The fish was moist and flaky - the skin had a satisfying crunchy. I don't like my veggies but with the sauce, not a morsel was left and same went with my friend's curry. The only downside of this place was the long wait for the meal to come. It was about 45 min for the entree to arrive but as I was in good company and good ambiance, I didn't mind at all! read more

Great service from the restaurant when I visited. We were able to sit on the upper level patio beside the balcony after requesting to change seating. Food is good but not very filling. You can not call yourself from Toronto without having an opinion on Hemingway's. Mine - outstanding! Have been a patron for decades - summers in the upper patio, winters in the middle level (don't know why but have only been in the lower level once). The places explodes during the world cup and other major events. Should you find yourself thinking where can I see the soccaroos play - this is your spot. Food is OK, but the atmosphere and community feel combined with an excellent lichee martini and great beers is a blessing ;-) read more

Finally the patios are open! Yay! Dropped by here for lunch with no reservation. No problem. Had a bit of a wait, no big deal then was seated on the top floor. Not the best seat, and I was a little worried about being ignored up there but service was fantastic. Ordered drinks that came within a few minutes, we ordered our food when the drinks came and the food also came promptly despite how busy they were. I ordered the beyond burger with cheese and a regular bun (comes with a gluten free bun). Loved it! Juicy, with a lightly toasted bun and all the basics on it. And some wonderful crunchy fries. My lunch guest had a regular burger. She also loved it but said there was too much food. Is there such a thing? I love this place. Great pub type good and great service on a patio. Folks this place has been in this location for eons. I recall this spot for its patio for my first summer in Toronto in the early 2000's the food was mediocre and the drinks mainstream and the service above average. Things haven't changed much in almost 2 decades hence the consistent clientele. With unprecedented circumstances due to covid 19 and only patios being allowed for service decided to pass by here. Prices are reasonable for food and drinks especially for this area. Service was decent one can do a lot worse in this area for a lot more (especially the spot next door). Give it a try if you want a pint of mainstream stuff and ok food. read more

First, they tried to seat us at the very top floor (the roof top patio on top of the rooftop patio), an empty drafty wooden box of a room completely void of atmosphere. I never get when restaurants do this, obviously people pay for the atmosphere when dining out and the regular patio was full of seating, why shove people in some forgotten corner unless you're packed? Second, they have a pizza for $18/19 dollars. Suggested that my wife not order it as it was the only pizza they had on menu which is a red flag. She orders it anyway. It arrived with the cheese unmelted, we asked for it to be heated longer (note we are not fussy people). It comes back with the cheese still looking separated but browner. It's clear at this point that Hemingway's Restaurant serves it's customers frozen pizza. I don't mean pizza that they make and then freeze, which would still suck, but i mean they went to the grocery store frozen food section bought a cerophane wrapped frozen pizza, located next to the hot pockets, and heated that up for their customer.
