Very busy place; you get mixed service from staff as your server is not your server. Very niche local spot. Best thing about it was variety of beer on tap. Food is a hit n miss too, someone from our group got ill from the food. It is dimly lit which is good, clean washroom. But our trip was soured by poor service. The pork belly is tender, the soda pop sauce gives it a delightful sweet/savoury taste, and the side picnic salad adds a freshness to dish. Last Sat. 3 friends and I stopped in at The Wren as part of what became a Danforth Bar/Pub Crawl. We arrived around 5:30 - 6 pm, at which time it was semi-crowded inside but with tables still available so we were seated right away. One of my friends ordered drinks to share and all 3 of us ordered food; I chose Guacamole & Chips (photo below) which although not a large portion considering the price, was very flavourful. We had prompt and friendly service and I quite enjoyed the 3 beers we shared as they were all exceptional in quality and a wide variety in terms of different flavours. We ordered a bunch of things to share: - the honey gojuchang wings were delicious. Crispy to perfection, flavourful and juicy all in one bite. Could definitely eat a plate of these. - vegan Crunchwrap supremo. It was ok, nothing special. - the special of the day, which was a chicken/rice dish. After seeing lots of yummy pics from The Wren on IG, we finally tried this place out. All we can say is Go, Go, Go! The food is great, service is friendly and lots of outside tables. They really have some innovative options plus specials each day. The quality of the food is high as well. Lots of interesting micro brew options, plus ciders, coolers and whiskies. We had the wings to start, OMG - a must have! We then had the fish tacos and the Uncle Buck burger. (Our friends had the Smash burger and chicken sandwich). Food was excellent all around. I went to the place 3 separate times. Can't find the pictures for the some reason. I had curry rice the 1st time. Spicy enough also not over the top. They have rotating tap list to choose from, I usually choose stout or darker ales if they don't have stout. I was sitting behind the glass washer, it sprayed at me a bit. Talked to the people there and they took care of the problem. Lots of people at the restaurant all the time, but the server always comes back at good intervals which is very good. 2 times I was sitting at the big communion table, still not too tight. 2nd time I shared few dishes with another person, they were all good. I think people should just everything. If you don't mind sitting at the communion table then you won't have to wait long at all. Cozy little spot slap bang in the middle of The Danforth. The inside is inviting and warm, accentuated by the lighting being dimmer and the use of wood paneling running through the inside. They have a great beer menu, and the food options I'm told change regularly and the menu itself is concise. The burger is really good, as were the accompanying hand-cut fries. I only docked the location one point because I was standing waiting at the entrance without getting acknowledged for a good long time (its not a huge place where one can get lost in the crowd) and the bar is literally a couple hops away from the front door. We were walking down Danforth Ave in East York looking for a Pub to grab a bite to eat and a beverage. The Wren appeared and saved the day. The people working there are super friendly and the food is outstanding. It's the best pub food I've had since leaving the UK. They have a nice bar selection with many options on tap. It's not a large place and has a wonderful homey feel. We had the burgers, wings, and mozzarella cheese sticks and they were all outstanding. No pre-made or frozen stuff here. Even the fries were out of this world good. We don't live here, and just happened upon it, but I was so impressed that I had to review. We came here a few months ago when it was warm enough to dine outdoors. They had heating lamps and service was impeccable. Overall, the food was very good and freshly made. We were happy to sit in the window for a drink after a long day...with one chair. My husband is 68 looked slightly uncomfortable and I saw a seat not being used by a 30 year old... he was happy to lend us a chair.. we were not staying long... nice man. ... immediately the bar tender lunged over the bar at me and snarked/told me off for asking for this chair.. as I was told it was not available when I arrived in a very aggressive manner. Blindsided I was . Pretty creepy behaviour and a bit of ageism as I sport my 62 years ...to her 30s..?? Pretty rich and unnecessary after a long day working. This has got to be one of my favourite brunch spots in the city. The fried chicken and dill sandwich is my absolute favourite! When you walk in, there's a board highlighting the beers they have on tap so be sure to take a picture of it when walk in because that will be your menu. My partner and I have gone several times and he's a huge fan of the vegan crunch wrap supremo. It's his go to and he loves it that much. This is truly a neighbourhood jem! We've been both for brunch and for dinner and both were amazing. It's walking distance from our house so I'm happy to have another amazing place in this area. The Uncle Buck Burger is quite possibly the best burger I've had. Freshly grounded beef and fresh homemade ingredients like pickles, beer batter union rings, and homemade sauces, truly make this burger. They offer it all day, so have it for breakfast if you'd like - I did :) We had the Fried Chicken Burger for dinner and it was just as good as the Uncle Buck with an amazing piece of fried chicken and a great spicy hot sauce. This isn't for anyone that doesn't like a strong kick of spice. They have a great selection of beers on tap from Canadian micro breweries. My favorite was the Blood Brothers ale that was a dark red amber. They also have the great West Avenue Heritage Dry Cider on tap. It's packed to the brim all the time and they don't take reservations (because why would they when they're always packed). The Wren clearly has a fantastic reputation online. I visited with friends today by accident and was absolutely impressed! The restaurant itself is decently sized probably serving 40-50 people at a time. You can choose to either be seated at the bar or a table towards the back of the restaurant. From what I witnessed today, you should be prepared to wait for at least 20 to 40 minutes for a table during the evening service. Ambience: Relaxed. Enjoy some great beer with flavourful food. I was able to savour every bite and felt very comfortable throughout the entire dining experience. Service: While waiting, we were welcomed warmly into the restaurant. We were offered to start with drinks while waiting but we opted to wait. Once seated, the great service continued. I often find that the question, "what do you recommend," can bring about mixed and uninspired responses. This was not the case at the Wren. Our server enthusiastically pitched beer and food recommendations to our table and we were sold! They continually visited our table to ensure that we were taken care of! It is one of the many reasons that I will gladly return! Beer: I was able to try out a light and dark beer. For myself, I had something lighter like a lager ( probably the Muddy York Gaslight Helleslager). It was easy to drink with a clean finish. They have a great selection that the servers can help you navigate to find a beer or wine to quench your thirst and pair nicely with your food! Food: The daily special that was successfully pitched to us was a Mexican chorizo ragout with cheesy polenta. My friends and I all agreed that it was a great recommendation by the server. The polenta served as a nice base for the hot chick pea and chorizo mix! It was also served with some nacho chips which added a textural component to the dish! Located on the Danforth, the Wren whipped up one of the best meals I've had in a while. It's a very hipsterish bar-restaurant with a full bar and long tables and booths for those coming to dine. The menu has a nice selection of Canadian dishes. I had the turkey sausage and polenta (boiled cornmeal) and it was delicious. My friend had the Southern Fried Chicken and it was a huge portion. The crowd was mid 20's to mid 30's and there was even a nursing mother with her husband; *somebody's* not afraid to pop it out and feed their baby! -The service was pleasant but a bit slow, but it was understandable as it was a busy evening. The decor included mismatched salt and pepper shakers, which was cute. Pro Tip 1: Portions are huge! We had ordered the guacamole and chips appetizer - even though this was phenomenal - it was a bit too much with our mains. Pro Tip 2: They don't take Amex. Had been meaning to come here for some time now and finally went the other night with some friends who have before, but for brunch. Place is a small hipster type place so you'll likely wait. While we were waiting though, one of the servers offered to get us some drinks at least which was nice. The place itself was very warm and welcoming, which made the experience even more pleasant. Seafood Tostadas - Started off with the seafood tostadas. I would've personally inhaled both but they were quite generous with my arch nemesis - cilantro. I did however take a few bites (after removing the evil weed of course) and it was delicious. The tostadas were heaping with their slaw which was really good and underneath all that, you get some calamari rings (grilled of course) and shrimp. The shell was also nice and crunchy. I would definitely go back for this but will make sure they don't add any cilantro. 5/5. Korean BBQ Chicken - This was absolutely delicious. Chicken was so crispy and was drenched with their sweet & spicy Korean BBQ sauce which was bursting with flavour. After a few bites it tasted a bit salty but it was so good that I didn't mind it at all. It was also sprinkled with a bit of sesame seeds which I love, green onions and chilli peppers. Definitely a must-try if you love chicken wings. As for the portion, it was actually pretty generous so a couple of people can share it as an app or one person can have it on its own as a main, if they're not too hungry. 5/5. Hot & Honey Fried Chicken Sandwich - Excellent sandwich if you're not in the mood for any red meat or don't eat it. Had the perfect crunch and the sauce was bursting with flavour. This is probably something I'd also get next time I visit. 5/5. Uncle Buck Burger - I keep hearing and seeing posts about this burger so I had to order it. It comes with an onion ring inside and normally I would take out the ring and eat it but I decided to be a rebel and just leave it in there. Even with the amount of Thousand Island dressing, the ring surprisingly didn't get too soggy. The beef patty was so juicy and had a lot of flavour. You can tell too that it was freshly made. Hands down one of the best burgers I've had. My mouth is watering as I type this! 5/5. Freshcut Fries - Their sandwiches always come with fries or you can substitute it for salad. Love me some freshcut fries so naturally, I left my order as-is. If you love Swiss Chalet fries, you will no doubt love these fries. They're much more crispier and they also give you a generous amount. This is the perfect type of fries you'd have in a poutine. I thoroughly enjoyed my one visit to The Wren. My coworkers and I were wining and dining some out-of-town affiliates of our company and we landed on this nifty little place along the Danforth. As we were all pretty amiable towards beer, all of us left this place pretty satisfied. I'm no beer geek, but some of the coworkers are, and they had nothing but approving nods for the beer selection at the Wren. Since the corporate credit card was thrown down, I had the leisure of trying out a wide variety of beer, and all of the bartender's recommendations were spectacular. I personally liked the Ion Cannon, a breezy, summery beer from Halo Brewery down by the Junction, but I digress. Oh! One more thing: try the barbecue cauliflowers. We had tried to call a few times earlier in the week to make reservations but they never answered their phone so I'm not sure if you can make reservations. Anyway we had to wait ~45 minutes for a table which was fine because we enjoyed some drinks while we waited. The server was helpful in finding me the perfect beer and gave me a little taster before I committed to a pint which was much appreciated. The stout they had on tap was great. I ordered the falafel platter which was delicious ! Lots of variety on the plate - pickled beets, falafel, hummus, mint crema, kale tabouli and flatbread. It was a regular Wednesday night in the big city. After going for drinks, my friend and I were hungry. This place was on social media and we were both curious. We drove down the Danforth and spent about 20 minutes going back and forth looking for parking. There was ZERO on-street parking available. We drove down to the nearest green p lost which was kinda far. It was about a 15 minute walk. We walked in to a very small bumping restaurant, bar stools were taken by upbeat folks and the back was loud and busy. We waited about 20 minutes for a table, while waiting we ordered a drink at the bar. Bar service was good. My only compliant was it was very squished. Finally we got called to our table. A squished seat in between 2 other couples on a picnic bench. We ordered the Guac and Chips which were average. My friend and I were here to try the Uncle Buck Burger; charred beef burger, with onions rings, pickles, thousand island dressing, bbq sauce and bacon. Sounds great right? It looked and sounded delicious. I was down! The fries were also delicious; crispy the way I like it. My only compliant about the burger is the meat lacked some flavour and it was too charred for my liking. The toppings worked well.
