This place is the epitome of a hipster hangout in the best way. They don't take reservations, and it's on the smaller, and more expensive side, so if you want a table that isn't on their adorable heated patio you better come on the earlier end of the night. The food, whether it be the daily dishes or regular menu items, I have found delicious most of the time. The daily hummus flavours are dicey depending on your mood but the mussels and chicken thigh mac and cheese are always hits. The service is absolutely amazing! Kind, attentive, and clear; they always are roaming around checking up on people and I've never felt so serviced. Also just as a fun add on, the bathroom stalls are covered in graffiti so it's kind of funny to read. A definite recommendation for a night out in the west end. read more

The Three Speed is exactly the kind of bar I love. It's got this irresistible low-key vibe that would be enough to warrant a very hearty recommendation, but then they also have a top-notch draft list and food that's actually delicious? It's almost too much goodness for one place. I showed up around 5:00 on a recent Friday and the back patio was pretty much empty, though it was completely full by the time we left a couple hours later. We were mostly there to drink and soak in the atmosphere, but we also wanted something to snack on, so we decided to try the Black Bean Dip. (I can't describe it more accurately than that, since the menu doesn't seem to be online anywhere.) Anyway, it arrived a short time later and it's amazing. I did notice a strong taste of cumin in my first few bites, but it wasn't long before the complexities of the various flavors became more apparent. This is a seriously tasty dip. I can say this is hidden even though it's on Bloor because it's not easy to spot. I must have biked by a billion times and missed it! After hearing this was a great spot for beer but sadly I had no idea it was for brunch, I took the opportunity to try it out when a friend suggested the place for brunch. I was pleasantly surprised! Coffee in a half or full carafe was available (yes, of course, I had the full size). They offer daily brunch specials board and a regular brunch menu. I went with the two egg breakfast with the farmers sausage option. Very pleased with the fact, this was a real sausage. We are all pretty happy with the service. It was busy but though we were taking our time eating we didn't feel pressure to leave but mind you it was cold and there was no line up. I heard they had a patio. Walk in to a loud bar with old wooden tables and chairs and exposed brick walls. I was extremely unimpressed by the service here. Firstly, the waiter took over 5 minutes to greet and seat us even though three of them clearly looked our way but didn't seem to care. Secondly, it took him more than 10 minutes after we sat down to give us a menu (a small card w a QR code). Thirdly, food was extremely slow and the server did not even give us updates or ask it if we wanted to have our appetizer first. We waited over 30 minutes for our burger, chicken sandwich and hummus. His attitude was also terrible as if we were inconveniencing him by asking about the menu or asking which table we can sit at. He was extremely cold. Also did not seem professional to see the bartenders/servers take multiple shots during our short time there from 7-8:30pm. The burger was good w a nice sirloin patty but was still missing something so it wasn't memorable. Portion sizes are also small and I was still hungry after. Not worth it for the price of $18 plus tax. All in all wouldn't go back again even if people say they have a nice patio. I just did not like the service and long waiting at all. If a definition of a dive bar=neighbourhood bar, then Three Speed sure is a winner.. It is the busiest bar we visited for the night.. and sure it was hopping with good vibe and energy on this weekday evening! Patio was packed!! Too bad, it was a great patio... maybe I have to come back earlier just to grab a spot next time. But sitting at the bar was just as cool... with people packing and standing around.. Great selections of food: gourmet sandwiches, burgers, pasta, even mussels... quite impressing as I thought originally Three Speed is just a bar bar... Steak Sandwich with Chipotle ($12) which my Yelp drinking buddy was forced to let me have a taste was delicious... now that's what I call food... This place is a solid 4 stars. A pal and I went the other night based on the reviews of other yelpers and we were not disappointed. it did take two trps around the block to find this place due to the low-key signage. Once we found the place, we stepped inside to a fairly crowded (but not overly) place. The main source of lighting are tealights that are on every table and all across the bar, it is supplemented by a few strings of lighting around the outside window. They have a good selection of wine/food and the servers aren't overbearing in trying to rush you out. My friend and I were prepared for a laid back evening so appreciated the time between visits from our server (at least I did). I had the famous fried chicken and mac and cheese. From my other reviews, I believe I've mentioned that when Mac and cheese is on the menu, I have a very hard time not ordering it. In this case, it's worth it. The mac and cheese is very creamy and certainly two steps up from anything i would make at home. The fried chicken was boneless which was a nice quality because it allowed me to enjoy every piece of it. The accompanying salad was perfectly dressed and complemented the other elements on the place nicely. The pickle that they serve with it, I could live without. The reason this place didn't get the full 5 stars is because my friend and I were sitting in a corner next to a boisterous group who really impeded our ability to have a decent conversation. The other half star was deducted because they do not have a dessert menu and after a delicious meal, like the one we had, something to finish it off would have just fit the bill. Three Speed is a full-service bar with a relaxed vibe and great energy. The place is one of those bars that is cool without trying to be. They have a beautiful patio, as well as a nice, dimly-lit interior. You will feel right at home here from your first visit. Three Speed has good service, yet the better deal here is that you can get really solid food, and pretty much whatever you want to drink. They have bottled beers, draught beers, wine by the glass or bottle, and great cocktails. The burger is priced right at 11$. So right off the bat, let's just say this: if you're looking for a bar that has serious first date vibes - this is it. It's hella romantic, energetic and cool. Now with all of that said: I came here on the weekend with a pal, and she decided to have her birthday here. When she mentioned she was trying to bring a group of 10+ here, I figured this would be dicey. But I gotta hand it to the staff, they somehow made it work. We had to wait a bit while they pulled some tables together, but we all eventually got to sit together. Now that is impressive. With all of that in mind, I have read thru the Yelp reviews and noticed that many people have said the service has been horrific. Oddly, our group did not get that at all. Our service mentioned he was going to do his best to ensure he could keep us all on separate tabs but gave us a fair warning ahead of time. Then when we went to leave, he presented us all with separate bills without prompting. Whatta guy! I ended up ordering the salmon salad, which was totally fine. Not the best thing I've ever eaten. But I mean: totally fine. I think the piece of salmon could have been larger and I know personally I love a lot more dressing. I did end up ordering a brownie (as a dessert) and it was not great. A small, dimly lit and unassuming restaurant - a true hole in the wall. I wouldn't say the service is slow - more like relaxed, so don't come here if you're in a rush. The food is great though - it tastes like home cooking, accompanied with the dim lighting can be relaxing. Mussels change daily but are great every time - a steaming bowl served with bread on the side. Chicken + Mac (plus a salad) is pretty good, but I like the mac more than the chicken. Tried the pork loin and linguine daily specials as well. The pork loin was like a Thanksgiving dinner plate, with the pork loin topped with a spicy cranberry sauce atop a cheese polenta. After a torrential down pour I wasn't sure if my friend's patio birthday party would be a go. Three Speed recovered well and got us set up in a nice spot on their back patio with cushions and a wiped table top. The place is hip without trying too hard with their exposed brick and dim lighting. The back patio is great with mismatched tables and chairs, plenty of plant life and once the sun goes down, the patio lanterns go on creating a really chilled vibe. I asked for a tall vodka soda with lots of lime and that's just what I got. Thank you! And none of your, been-out-all-day-dried-up-pieces-of-crap limes like you get in some places. I also appreciated that our server remembered the lots of lime detail when I reordered. Dinner was great. I got the roasted Salmon with Brown Sugar on Greens with Lime Yogurt. It was light and satisfying. Fish was cooked well and I had to do my best not to just scarf it down since it was so tasty. Others at the table had nothing but good things to say about the Veggie Cristo (a veg sibling to big brother Monte)... in fact one raved that it was the best sandwich she'd ever had! Reviews on the Sirloin Burger was mixed. Most enjoyed it, but others could have done without so much bun and the tomato ragu condiment. The Catfish Sandwich from the specials list elicited and "Oh my GOD!" so I'm guessing it was a hit. Note to those wanting to celebrate a birthday here, bring your own candles. They didn't have any for the cake that we brought and they presented it to the table still in the box. We're laid back and didn't /really/ care, but c'mon.... a little more effort in the presentation department would have been nice. We were let down by this place after it was recommended by a friend. The interior of the bar and the patio are both cute and cozy but that was about the best I could say about the place. Service was not great. We were not greeted and it felt like we inconvenienced staff when we asked if we could sit outside. It took a while for someone to come to our table and even then there was no friendly greeting. In fact, I don't think I saw any of the wait staff smile even once the entire time we were there. When delivering and removing items they were abrupt and silent. It was uncomfortable to say the least. The food was unremarkable. I had salmon which had little to no flavor and was not cooked through in the middle. I ate around it rather than send it back. My date had the jambalaya which was good but not spectacular. Overall, not sure I would return. There are too many other great places in Toronto, no need to waste time and money at Three Speed. read more

This place is so romantic and atmospheric! Really sweet for a date or an intimate hangout with friends. I'd love to come back when the weather is warm, as apparently they have a lovely patio. The location is great too, there's another nice bar and an adorable dessert place (open late) nearby. The food was wonderful - I got the brisket sandwich and it was juicy and flavourful and perfectly fatty. Awesome. The sandwiches don't list any sides, but they come with a little salad which was a pleasant surprise. No fries though. The prices are fair. Fantastic summer patio spot. Good wheat beer. Service is shockingly bad and they seem proud of it. Food mediocre - had the fried chicken on Caesar salad. Yikes - small portion and the requested light dressing was just Parmesan cheese sprinkled on top. My friend had the samosas and said they were very good. Get there soon and try out the place cause won't be around long. We had two servers both could not have given a shit to be frank. Ordered chocolate dessert. Waiter forgot to put in the order. Snarky when we asked if it was coming after a 10 minute wait. "Uh sir, desserts take at least 10 mins." Oh really. Are you making them from scratch monsieur? He tried to make it my fault some how. Okay, I have a bone to pick with this place. We have been here several times for brunch and once for dinner. The food is surprisingly good, but now I am wondering to myself if this is just because the appearance of the place lowers your expectations. The problem I have with Three Speed is the service. We have never had great service here - it has been consistently adequate, with leanings towards surly. Tonight, however, was an infuriating experience. There is nothing that angers/disappoints/disgusts me more than establishments, products, services that fail on basic and fundamental levels. Like a vacuum cleaner that doesn't suck (literally, not figuratively) or a sandwich shop that makes crappy sandwiches. Well, from the service side, Three Speed fails on the most basic level. Tonight we walked in to a semi-full restaurant and were greeted by... well we weren't greeted at all. We stood at the entrance (two of us) and waited. Another couple came in behind us and waited. No one greeted us. No one talked to us. No one looked at us. At one point, a female server brought a dish to a seated customer right in front of the door where we were standing. She left the plate and turned back to the bar without looking at the people waiting at the door. Finally, my partner took it upon herself to go to the bar and ask whether this was a seat yourself establishment. The same server indifferently asked "how many are you?" and hearing the answer, pointed to a table and said "there's one right there." I thought this city had evolved past "hipster-indifference-lack-of-service-I'm-too-cool-to-give-you-service-service" but apparently not. Wear plaid shirt, find bar with exposed brick, order microbrew beer, groove to downbeat reggae, readjust ironic hat, rinse, repeat. It's all a bit Liberty Village for me. Oh my, I've just become a big fan of Three Speed for brunch! NOTE: I am only writing about my brunch experience. This place is mostly a bar and I am not speaking to that. EGGS BENNY W/ PEAMEAL ($10) What a lovely and complete meal. It was just right! Two softly poached eggs on top of generous slices of peameal, which rested on Portuguese cornbread, topped with a nice and light Hollandaise sauce. The bennies came with a small serving of homefries, a slice of grilled tomato and a nice crunchy salad (crunchy because of the cabbage!). I really appreciated the cornbread because English muffins can sometimes be too chewy. **note: you can get the bennies with peameal, spinach & arugula or smoked trout! REST OF THE MENU... There are not a lot of options, which I find helpful and hopeful. They had quite a few brunch specials, all of which were very decently priced and sounded delicious (chipotle chocolate glazed donuts! eggs benny crab cakes!) AMBIANCE The back patio is incredibly charming. It was the perfect brunching atmosphere. It feels private (high wooden fence) and comfortable. Lots of botany growing on the fence, which made it feel like a little garden. You can choose to sit at a picnic table or at a two-person table tucked away in the corner. I really appreciated the seating options! The patio just feels..."organic." Wood, plants, brick. It feels really good to sit back there! SERVICE Regular. It was decent. - It wasn't that long ago that Bloordale was a strip of Toronto that felt neglected. In fact, most people may feel like its still neglected, but looking around, it's evident that there are signs of improvement. That's where Three Speed comes in. Located unseemingly near Pauline on Bloor street West, they definitely took a risk opening up in this somewhat seedy Toronto neighbourhood. But regardless the risk, it seems to have worked for them. Packed nightly with 20-something hipsters, it's difficult to get a seat if you show up past 8 or 9 o'clock, but don't let any of that stop you. As far as 'Blansdowne' goes, bar-wise there just isn't much that competes with it. Three Speed is brought about by the same people that started the Communist's Daughter, and they also have some affiliation with The Dakota, so you can expect the same sorta crowd and atmosphere--and dare I say pretentiousness--that you'd expect to see in any of those spots. If you can find the dam place that is... Three Speed is difficult to notice. In fact, if you weren't directly looking for it or didn't know where it was, you'd probably go right past; and if it wasn't for the red lights strung about the front window spiking my curiousity, I probably wouldn't have ever discovered it either. So when you're walking around Bloor and Lansdowne, and you finally do find it and get inside, the hidden-factor sorta gives the feel of a Bloordale oasis. The inside of Three Speed is not what you'd expect by the near-crumbling exterior. Inside it's dimly lit, low-key, and seriously comfortable. With exposed brick, wood panels, and art galore, it's an easy place to want to hang out at. Scribbled on a chalkboard and suspended on the bar wall, Three Speed has a slightly random food menu that displays their feature items, like mussels served in 1 of 3 styles, Lo, Med, and High, indicating 'speed' but not content. You can expect well-rounded flavours of lime, fennel, and roasted garlic. No mistake, these are mighty good mussels. But if there's a bunch of you, and mollusks aren't your thing, I'd recommend the Party Plate. It's a nice spread of cheese, meat, and pickled goodness. If you're not the sharing type, I'd go with the sirloin burger. Although I've definitely had better, this is still a savoury and sizeable burger that won't disappoint you. Like I said, it feels like the neighbourhood is on the mend and slowly losing its feel of neglect. There are even a few other cool spots that followed suit and opened up in this neighbourhood, like Holy Oak and the Starving Artist; both businesses that are beginning to do well. If you're in the Bloordale area, hanging out at Three Speed is an easy, but slowly becoming not the only option. But the fact remains, these people have taken a crappy, ex-Karaoke dump in a less-than-desirable neighbourhood and turned it into something special that is directly impacting the culture of Bloordale and for that, they definitely deserve to be commended. If first impressions are everything, Three Speed is the whole flippin' show. Friends and I were walking down Bloor St on a gorgeous summer's day, hitting every thrift and vintage shop in sight on way to Snakes & Lattes, when we realized we had HOURS to kill before our 6pm meetup and were feeling rather peckish. "What do we eat?", we wondered, gazing about, knowing the many options available yet strangely uninspired... So we kept up the meandering pace before the sound of a tuba stopped me in my tracks. "THUMPthumpTHUMPthumpBFFFFFTT!" it called to me from somewhere just up the street. I got excited. Tuba? Summer? Hungry? Surely, a burly man was waiting somewhere with brass instruments and a greasy sammich for me to dig into! I ceased my stop and made way to this fat brass angel's call! I came to a tiny, nearly-miss-it kinda joint, as further sounds joined the tuba: an accordion, a trumpet, a sax... a symphony of old timin' music! On a sunny Sunday afternoon! Joy of joys! And a fiddle! Happiness! I looked at the little sign: "Three Speed". "Hm," says I, "Three Speed. I think I might love you." I ushered my somewhat incredulous friends inside. "Don't worry, with music like this it's gotta have good food!" And, long story short, they do! They do have good food! And good beer! And good staff! And if by "good" on all three points you suspect I mean "great", you'd be underestimating my zeal! They're better than just "good", or even "great", they're... well, something -- use your words, amigo! I've since enjoyed a number of brunches and lunches, many Sunday afternoons (with tubas et al), and have yet to have anything less than some of my most enjoyable experiences in Toronto. I suggested Three Speed for girls catch up brunch on a very hot and humid Saturday afternoon. I was relieved to push open the door and greeted by a nice dose of AC. It would also have been nice to be greeted by a staff member. As I walked through the place, looking for my party, I noticed that staff were behind the counter and avoided any eye contact. I walked to the back patio, which was very nice. Came back into the restaurant when I didn't see any of my friends, sat at a table where I remained unnoticed for a good 10 minutes, even though the dining room only had customers at 3 tables. When everyone arrived, a server came over with menus and promptly took our orders. I ordered the huevos rancheros ($9) and others ordered the French toast ($8), granola with fruit ($5) and eggs benny ($13). We also ordered their cute drink special called Beauty School Drop Out for $7.50 (gin, pineapple, persecco and blueberries) and a pint of cider ($6.50). Food orders came quickly and I loved my huevos, even though the side salad was a bit limp. Near the end of our meal, I had rested my knife and fork on the edge of the plate to tell a story that involved flailing my arms. I had about 2 bites of my heuvos left and before I knew it, our server swooped in and whisked away my plate. Okay, I get the hint, I probably didn't really need to finish off those two bites anyway (#thisiswhyimfat). By the by, isn't the international symbol for being done with your plate a crossed fork and knife with a napkin on top? Once the rest of the plates were cleared, our server didn't really check in with us and it was a bit of a wait to grab the bill, not that we were in a huge rush. He didn't offer any water refills either (another hint - I was bloated looking enough). The food was good, service not great. VIBE Hip, casual and romantic. Dim enough that your your main source of light is the pretty tea light on your table and that extra candle stuck in a wine bottle you carried over from the bar, but not so dim you get a headache. Lots of wood elements and exposed brick. Despite all this, the bartenders and servers are not total pricks! Incredible. The cozy back patio has a private, cozy feeling. Plenty of seating, enough greenery to make you feel like you're in someone's backyard, and a giant woodburning fireplace that throws a lot of heat and makes you smell like a campfire for the rest of a night. This place is absolutely amazing! I can't even put into words how much I loved this place from the perfect hipster cool decor, to the fairy lights and candle-lit atmosphere. The menu is small, but impressive. I've been here twice and the dishes were so good that I had to make it for myself at home because I was craving it so much (this isn't in my neighbourhood, or I would have just had them make it for me). Here's a run-down for the food: I had the fish special with crispy skin trout, root veg puree and maple dijon sauce. The fish was cooked to perfection, just raw enough in the middle to my liking. It paired nicely with the puree and sauce. My dinning partner had shrimp linguine with white wine sauce. There were plenty of plump shrimp nestled amongst the citrusy white wine sauce and pasta. It was also studded with wilted spinach and fresh cherry tomatoes. I have to admit, I had to steal more than one bite it was so good! I had steak and potatoes on my second Three Speed visit. The steak came as I had ask, a good medium rare with a delicious red wine sauce. It was also accompanied by deliciously chunky mash that was just creamy enough, but wasn't baby food. The pints are reasonably priced and they have a good selection. But in my mind, the food and atmosphere are the real reasons to go to Three Speed. read more

After visiting this unassuming joint in December and finding it to be fairly cute, with the requisite red-filtered mood lighting, exposed brick and chilled atmosphere, I was eager to see how this place would hold up in warmer months and, luckily, a back patio and tasty eats means I will certainly be going back. On a warm day last week, a friend and I decided to hit it up for post-work booze and food since it was within walking distance from the station and her place and, really, when does that ever happen? As mentioned, having only been once before, I had no idea they even had a proper dinner menu and was surprised to find them offering slightly dressed-up grub like mussels, involved sandwiches and some sort of chicken and mac n' cheese dish that sounded amazing but a little too indulgent, according to my thighs. The only bummer was their Mennonite Sausage Sandwich (if my interpretation of the chalkboard handwriting is to be believed) couldn't be swapped out with any other kind of non-pork sandwich. So the big salad it was for me and the garlic-infused mussels for my friend. Despite being a little concerned that salad for dinner would leave me hungry, I'm happy I chose to go the leafy route. Fresh greens, which, if I recall correctly, included spinach and radicchio, were mixed with THE BEST candied walnuts I've ever had, tossed with sizable chunks of strong blue cheese, strawberries and a dressing that complemented the dish without overpowering it or leaving the greens drenched with sauce. Also, it came with two unexpected slices of yummy, crunchy garlic bread. Bonus! Now I'm still on the fence about mussels in general - it's that weird seam down the middle and the super-chewy texture that makes me squirm - but I managed to choke down a few and man, were they tasty. I don't know if it was the garlic talking, but the Three Speed mussels almost had me considering making a proper effort to acquire a taste for the lean mollusks. And they too came with a considerable amount of sliced bread, perfect for sopping up the potent soup-like marinade in which the mussels were bathing. If I had one suggestion, it would be making print-out menus, or installing a sandwich and/or chalk board on the back patio, so parties don't have to go inside to order. But all in all, Three Speed is more than just a bright star on a rather desolate stretch of street - it's good food, good atmosphere, good service. And I didn't even mention their Caesars! I definitely wish I lived closer to the Bloordale Village. There's a mix of restaurants, mom & pop shops and cool bars that I can now call my locals. Three Speed is one of them. My friend, who has been living in NYC for a couple of years, was back in town and wanted a cool bar to hang out at. Immediately I thought of this place. It has a relaxed atmosphere that fit my friend's request to just sit and hang out with our friends over a few pints. Sure, on weekends it's packed with people. Finding a seat is difficult but fear not, there's always the patio, which can offer some salvation. Patio is partially covered which is quite handy when those torrential rain storms settles in. I tell you from personal experience that you and your beer will be safe. It's been a while since I last tasted the food here but from what I remember it's good. The last item I ordered from there was a antipasto-like platter that had cheese, salamis and the like. It would good but it's definitely best to share it with two people. read more
