It's been a while since we've eaten at Haru. When we entered the restaurant, they had a few customers but weren't very busy. Ou5 5-person party was sat at a nearby table. We ordered a couple orders of Takoyaki, a Curry Katsudon (with a pork cutlet), a Katsudon (with a chicken cutlet) and an Oyakodon. The food arrived quickly; first the Takoyaki and our sides (pickled shitaake and an extra bowl of steamed rice). Eventually each of the rice bowls arrived at our table, fresh and pipping hot- the rice was nuclear. We had to sit and let it cool off fora while, we wondered how the rice could stay that hot, that long. Eventually, we all were able to enjoy our meals and half of my Oyakodon was still too hot to eat, so I took it home. Overall, our visit was positive, we ate great food at a resonable price and the service was friendly and attentive enough.
Haru Ramen is hands down the best ramen in Reno! If you love a kick of heat, their Tonkotsu Shoyu with level 5 spice is an absolute must-try. The broth is a deep, rich red, packed with incredible savory flavor and a real fire intensity that true spice lovers will appreciate. To top it all off, they have a great selection of snacks to buy. I always make sure to grab the strawberry fish ice cream (Samango) dessert on my way out. It is so ridiculously good I could easily eat five. Between the fiery red broth and the sweet treats, this spot never disappoints. Highly recommend!
Overall rating: 4.5/5 I have been to Haru multiple times, with friends, family, ordering take-out or dining in. I finally decided to opt out of my usual Miso ramen order and try the donburi. My absolute favorite appetizers are the karaage chicken and takoyaki, it is very hard to find quality of either in town and each order has never been less than great. The menu is detailed and include vegetarian and vegan options. I had the chicken curry katsudon, the chicken was breaded and fried well, and the curry contained potatoes, carrots, and onions, yet it felt really heavy on the carrots, and I couldn't finish them all. My partner had the Kuro ramen, which he gets every time, but this time level 3 spice didn't seem spicy. Whenever we order to-go, it is visibly clear when it is level 3. The service was fast and friendly for a Thursday night, the lychee martini and draft Sapporo that we always order still tasted as good as ever.
I have been wanting to try out this ramen restaurant and Haru did not disappoint. Upon entering, a staff member greeted us and asked if we preferred the bar or table. We opted for a table. The interior is very open and you are able to see the cooks/chefs making the food if you sit at the bar. The inside also has a corner with snacks to buy. This is my second time here and it is still good. I ordered the Haru Shoyu Ramen. The ramen was not overcooked and everything was seasoned well. The staff are efficient at their job and got our orders in at a timely manner. The wait was not very long for the food to come out. Definitely would come back here again and try other items on the menu.
Food: 5/5 Service: 4/5 Ambiance: 5/5 My coworkers love this place and now I see why! This is one of the most flavorful bowls of ramen I've had in Reno!! I haven't stopped thinking about it since I had it. My friends have tried other non-Ramen bowls on the menu and had great things to say about it. They open at 11:30 and are usually packed by 12, so get there early for lunch! The servers did a good job of managing the large crowd. There's plenty of seating for large parties (I've been here with a group of 8), a spacious pickup/takeout area, and small bar seating (but they don't serve regular bar drinks). I need to get back here ASAP to try some more menu items!
I have never been to Haru and my friends wanted to meet there before the movies so I said "why not". I got there first and walk in and immediately greeted. I said " I need a table for 5. We normally don't seat you until your party is all here. I said "can I order a beer while I wait". We take the orders when you sit down. Can I sit at the bar? He finally let me sit at the table then one of my friends showed up and I was so happy! We had service immediately and I ordered a Sapporo and my friend ordered appetizers while others arrived shortly after. My friend is obsessed with Ramen. He's like Diane you must try it. I wasn't feeling hungry and I was saving myself for movie popcorn so I chose to get the potbelly screwers and the short ribs. I found the potbelly to be gaming tasting and the ribs to be tough, but flavorful. I really loved the dumplings/potstickers were my favorite. I wish I ordered those as my main dish. The Japanese fried chicken was good too. I loved the Japanese candy selections. Fun to try something new. I need to go back and try the Ramen is my goal when I'm super hungry for noodles. I was so busy catching up with friends I forgot to take photos of the food. Next time!!
I found Haru near my hotel when I wanted noodle soup. Fortunately, I got there before the dinner rush. The restaurant was a third full when I arrived, but shortly after I ordered, the place filled up and there was a wait for tables and take-out. I ordered the Haru Ramen, which had straight noodles, pork belly, soft boiled egg, wood ear mushrooms, fishcake, nori, and black garlic oil in a tonkatsu broth. I had it in level 1 spicy, which wasn't spicy, but had a a little kick to it. The broth was so flavorful. One of the fishcakes was cold so I dunked it in the broth. I wish I had gotten the wavy noodles instead, but the meal as a whole was delicious and satisfying for this cold windy night. Service was attentive, but since the restaurant was busy, it took a while for the ramen to come out. On the right side of the restaurant, they sell Asian snacks and ice cream.
Haru is located in a business center near the airport and has plenty of public parking. The restaurant has rice bowls, ramen, udon and yakitori skewers in addition to a full bar. A small grocery section with a limited supply of Japanese items is located next to the entrance. I did a quick review and noted Japanese ice creams, Onigiri, cream rolls, cookies, chips, sodas, and alcohol for purchase. As for the dining, we had the Curry Katsudon, Kuro Ramen, Chicken Skin Skewer, Kalbi Skewer and Pork Belly Skewer. Really liked the Katsudon and Ramen and skewers were good except for the Pork Belly which was a little too dried out for our taste. Service is quick, interior is clean and bright, and food is affordable and good. Will go back for the Chicken Skin Skewer and Kuro Ramen for sure.
Stopped in for some dinner this evening with my family. The inside is super cute and looks pretty clean. They have some refrigerated areas with special drinks snacks and ice creams you can choose from which is pretty neat! I got the miso ramen and my husband got the spicy miso both of them were very tasty!! Service can use a bit of help but overall the food was tasty! If your craving ramen this is a good option
Craving for Japanese food, dropped by Haru tucked away on Longley Ln. My second visit to this restaurant. This restaurant is vibrant, and busy, and crowed, 20 minutes wait time. Worth the wait. In the corner of the restaurant is little store that's sell Japanese snacks of different variations. I got the Japanese chicken curry served with rice. It contains chicken, curry with vegetables. Good flavor, I wish it had little heat or spice. The portion was perfect. Just lacking spiciness.
I saw online that haru sold the trendy ice cream that looked like fruit and its usually hard to find. So my fiancee and I had to go and get it.. funny thing, we went but didnt end up buying that.. lol. We had never been there before and when we walked in we were surprised to see they have a little international store in the back of the restaurant. So much to look at it from snacks to spices to cold and frozen items.. they had so many different flavors of oreos and kit kats! they had fridges and freezers with drinks, coffees, ice cream , dessert items, ect.. It was all set up nicely and easy to access all the items. The restaurant looked nice and clean. We didn't eat there this time but will go back because everything sounded good. The staff was also very nice and wasnt bothered that we were there just for the store part. We ended up getting different flavored rice crackers and had to try different flavors of kit kats.. along with some cookies and tea.. Cant wait to go back for items and the restaurant.
A simple Ramen House that prioritizes the quality of their food over bougie frivolities. Starting with the appetizers, we ordered the Galbi (beef short ribs). Cooked to perfection, with a touch of char from the grill and pure deliciousness in terms of taste. Not feeling overly peckish, I ordered the Negima Yakitori (chicken thigh). Another perfect dish. The chicken was grilled perfectly with the chicken cooked but still tender and moist. I also had bacon wrapped scallops. The chef is a master griller, cooking the scallops to perfection. So delicious. On to the mains. My wife ordered the Gyudon. A traditional dish with thin sliced beef ribeye simmered in dashi and soy sauce with onions and green onions, served over rice. While attractive, my wife said the flavor was "meh". We also ordered the Pork Katsudon, breaded pork cutlet and eggs simmered in dashi and soy sauce with onions and green onions, served over rice. and our last dish was the Kuro Ramen (extra spicy!). Tonkotsu stock, shio tare and straight noodles. Topped with pork belly, a soft-boiled egg, beansprouts, woodear mushroom, fishcake, green onions, seaweed, and black garlic oil. Our friend's favorite, as he finished every drop. A nice Japanese diner that prioritizes quality over flash. I like it.
Updating review with pictures. Had the following items for the first time, 10/10 recommend: -udon with tempura vegetables: LOTS of interesting veggies like shishito peppers, yams, zucchini, mushrooms, eggplant -pickled cucumber: less like a dill pickle and more like a mildly marinated cucumber
This was my first time here. My friend is moving so she invited me to a going away dinner. We started off having to be on a wait-list for seating. On Friday and Saturday they don't allow reservations, because those days are the busiest. The wait was 15 minutes before we were seated. They are in a shopping center so there is parking available on site. They started off with the drinks and we got a couple of different appetizers. Along with miso soup. Our waitress, Jolene was super helpful explaining the menu to be and making recommendations. We got the Japanese curry and it came over rice. The food was delicious. The restaurant had simple decor and seating areas. We enjoyed ourselves there. To me this restaurant prioritizes their cuisine over the luxury seating arrangements. I commend them for that! I felt very over dressed but overall we had a great time. read more

This is one of my go-to's when I'm craving some comfort food! I always order the takoyaki and this time ordered a rice bowl. The ramen is always really good too! It can get busy during peak lunch and dinner times, so plan ahead. Portions are pretty big, so I always have leftovers for myself. read more

I remember coming here when it first opened and years later I've decided to come back. There are bar seats and regular tables. In the back of the store, there's a little section that sells Asian snacks which I don't remember being there when I first visited years ago. Service was good. Food was okay. For appetizers I ordered takoyaki (delicious) and the chicken gizzard yakitori (to try out and it was okay). Entrees: miso ramen (non spicy) and the tonkotsu ramen (level 5 but it's not spicy in my opinion, just very red). The broth was a little bland but the toppings were generous. The chashu isn't the traditional ramen chashu. read more
Hmmmm.. I previously had a review a few years back.. but somehow it went missing.. I even have pictures from before.. Arrived and the place was busy.. Pros- soda was perfectly carbonated and the miso soup was decent-.. Cons- Food- Unagi Don- simple - two pieces of unagi smothered in sauce- would not get again.. Pork Katsu don- the vegetables were almost the same size as the pork cutlet- not my way of serving curry- pieces have to be proportioned.. Takuan- huge and thick slices-.. again .. can't even enjoy .. The onigiriazu-interesting- but fell apart and there wasn't any real taste.. Service- non apparently- never had anyone to check back after the food was served, nor our drinks.. Staff was young and didn't really see any cooks present- Not really any dress attire- I really had high hopes again- but so disappointed.. Walked out without any thank you.. No, I won't be back.. read more

The food was AMAZING. I had the miso ramen w chicken. The broth was so flavorful. I got a level 3 for spice and I could've done a 4. The waitress was so informative and patient w us. It was beautiful inside and very clean. There wasn't music blaring from the speakers either. The snack shop was really cute and it was cool to see all those different types of snacks. read more

Haru, I think, is the most decent Japanese restaurant in Reno by far. When I tried their shrimp tempura last year, the batter they used was authentic, but they serve a teriyaki or katsu sauce, and not the dashi sauce. So I told myself that I will never order tempura here. However, that changed when we dined-in tonight. My husband ordered soba bento (with tempura vegetables and shrimp on the side). I tried the tempura, and I noticed that they didn't serve that katsu sauce, and they are now serving the authentic dashi sauce!! I am over the moon! My quest for authentic tempura has ended! If I crave for an authentic tempura, Haru will be my top go-to place! I ordered on the other hand its Haru ramen in chicken broth, because it's so windy outside. The ingredients were decent and can be rated as closer to authentic ramen. They cooked the eggs perfectly, and the egg noodles tasted legit! I love their takoyaki too, because you can taste and see the octopus in the balls. The servers are friendly -- the other one is wearing a "Mike "bearded guy" Taylor shirt of Walk Off the Earth band, a Canadian indie pop band. My husband is Canadian, so we are happy to know that the staff has a good taste in music The ambiance is like a regular Japanese restaurant. I like it when there's a bar type table, so you can dine there while seeing the chefs prepare the food. Definitely, if you are looking for authentic Japanese restaurant, Haru is what I will recommend! read more

Sweet Japanese Ramen restaurant! They sell tons of Japanese snacks, drinks, desserts. They also have Onigiri Rice Balls. Tends to be packed but they will call you when your tables up. Their cocktail drinks are pretty and delicious. Loved the cool mural art and posters. p.s. don't ask for siracha , it's authentic Japanese food. read more

It's finally Spring so late lunch at Haru was a nice choice. My husband had been there before, but for a business lunch, he hadn't really paid attention to the food! With more attention to the menu he had Ramen...classic! Pork Belly is not his cup of tea, he tried it, didn't like it but for sure a matter of personal taste. The bowl was beautifully composed. I had the Tempura Donburi. Tempura is one of those things I'm not going to bother to try and make at home, no way could I get it right! My dish was delish. I had the seaweed salad as my side (my meal also included miso soup). I like that the restaurant has a rather narrow focus, I felt like this was probably a very typical Japanese style place. I should have figured out what Haru means in Japanese, based on the cherry blossom motif, but I did look it up, Haru means Spring! read more
We just came for a tapas style dinner/snack since we weren't too hungry. We ordered the chicken skin, hearts, ribeye, galbi, pork belly, and bacon scallops. The bacon scallops were our favorite. The spicy mayo that it came with was very good and had a nice kick to it. The galbi was our second favorite. The flavor was really good and was super tender. The chicken hearts had a nice texture and full of flavor. I enjoyed the pork belly as well, but I didn't like the sauce it came with, so it tasted bland without the sauce. The chicken skin didn't have much flavor, so we added more chili to it. And the ribeye with chimichurri was unfortunately the one we liked the least. The flavor was ok, but the texture wasn't good. It was maybe overcooked or something. The passion caparinha was really good, it was sweet and strong. I didn't finish it because I felt like we were rushed out for not ordering entrees. Even though the bill still came to be almost $90 for 2 drinks and 6 yakitori options. It wasn't busy when we came in, but about 15 minutes later the place was completely packed, so I felt rushed. I don't think we would come back if we are in town. If we do then it will be for the scallops. read more
Went for lunch today, there just after opening, not busy. Seated immediately, provided water and menus. Friendly, fast service, decent atmosphere, great for dining in or take away. Ordered the edamame for starters. Came out hot...only issue, covered in salt (have to ask for no salt next time...if you pop the beans out, you'll miss most off the salt...just sayin'). Ordered the Tori Paitan ramen bowl, spice level 3. Orders came out quick. Decent broth, though seemed a little off, but still a perfect kick to accent the other ingredients. Decent amount of protein, added the edamame seen in the photo to change things up a bit. Great topped with ground sesame seeds (on the table) and if you're game, kick it up a notch with the chili oil! I'll try another variety on my next visit when in the area. All in all, good experience, good location and plenty of parking. read more

The best ramen I've had so far in Reno! I ordered the Kuro ramen because it came with black garlic oil and oh my god such a good choice on my part. The broth was so yummy. The pork belly was pretty tender. Noodles were a nice texture. I wish I had more noodles just to have more with the broth. It was SOOOOO good. I definitely will be back. I'd come before 6 PM just because they can get pretty busy. It's nice you can sit at the bar though and watch them cook even. I enjoyed my meal here a lot. read more
I moved to Reno in 2014 and spend my time between here and SoCal (mecca of Asian cuisine). The food scene here has exploded which is awesome. I'm not going to compare any Reno Asian cuisine to SoCal because it's never going to compare so to be fair I'm judging Haru against the mediocrity of Asian food in Reno. I really enjoyed Haru and it is one of a kind in Reno and I hope Asian food continues to elevate. Miso ramen and Kuro ramen were good. Bacon asparagus yakitori was good. The katsu sandwich was very disproportionate. Waaaaaay too much rice to katsu ratio. Guys please chill on the rice. I think what would do better at this restaurant is offer musubi. Spam and katsu musubi to start. Also maybe 1-2 simple rolls as appetizers. Possibly basic Cali and spicy tuna roll. Keep it simple. Possibly side order of Japanese fried rice. Next time will try the udon and gyozas. If they could do a mazemen that would be dope. Thanks Haru for adding some variety to Reno. read more

Not bad for ramen in Reno! Wide variety of options including ramen, donburi, skewers, udon, etc. I feel like if the restaurant re-made the menu with photos of the food it would help A LOT. Many people in Reno aren't familiar with this type of food and are scared to try new things so the photos would help with lots of questions. I got the spicy miso ramen and it was pretty good! Loved the creamy egg and chashu. Got a level 1 spicy and it was perfect for me. Friends got one of the rice bowls - looked meh. The coolest thing about this place is honestly all the extras they offer. On top of their menu, they also have a whole fridge/freezer stocked with Asian drinks, treats, and desserts including ramune soda, yogurt drinks, Mochi ice cream, samanco ice cream! Honestly a genius move on the owners' part because they can buy for bulk and Jack up the prices and sell individually. The servers don't even bring it to you - you walk up to the fridge and get it yourself. Genius! They also have a matcha strawberry meringue dessert on their menu that was super yummy! And also a very wide selection of alcohol including Japanese beers I'd never heard of. I tried the yuzu lager - interesting... bitter aftertaste. Not sure if I really liked it but I liked the novelty of it! Staff was also incredibly friendly. Our server took the time to explain everything and answer allllll our questions and was very knowledgeable. Would come again if I found myself wanting ramen in Reno! read more

Haru is the only spot I'd go for ramen! Their spicy miso ramen & karaage hits every time. To my surprise, they now offer Japanese snacks & onigiris, which we had to try and I wish they offered other fish options besides tuna. It was still good tho nonetheless I'm just not a big fan of Tuna. Definitely check this place out. Hands down the best! read more

Good grief... where to I start with this review. My friend and I stopped here for lunch as it offers vegan options as well. I ordered Kimchi, rice, seaweed salad and chicken thighs with green onions as I wasn't all that hungry, but needed to eat something. Everything was delicious expect the chicken thighs with greens onions. The chicken was completely raw in the middle like, WTF!! The waitress says she can have the chef put it back on the grill. I'm like no thank you, I'm good. I was completely put off back the chicken. This service is slow as all get out especially waiting on straws, napkins and lemons. There was no one in sight for at least 10 mins. I definitely would never come back as I'm turned off by the whole experience of this place. read more

I have been meaning to try this place for a long time, and finally made a special trip to Reno to do so! We came in for an early dinner and shared the well lit and warm dining atmosphere with several other families and couples also dining early. I was excited to try their Tonkotsu Shoyu ramen and was not disappointed with my selection. It was perfect. We also ordered some Kaarage chicken and after tasting how good it was with the spicy dipping sauce, we ordered two more orders to go. We also tried a few of their yakitori dishes and split some gyoza which were also cooked to perfection and what I'd consider correctly. They were pan fried then steamed to finish like dim sum potstickers are. That's always a good sign when a restaurant cares about cooking them the right way versus the easy ways (pure steamed or pure deep fried). There were two servers a young man and young lady. The young lady took great care of everyone and actively watched all her tables, the young man was lazy and listless, but nice. He was the type that never looks around the room and does any task super slow and lethargically. Overall a great visit! I'll definitely be back! read more

My husband and I dined at Haru recently after returning from a visit to Tokyo. The starters, soup, and ramen dishes were very good. Additionally, the service by staff was prompt, courteous, and efficient. We enjoyed the gizzard and heart starters prior to receiving our entrees. I had the Tonkotsu Shoyu (level 3 spicy) and my husband had the Kuro Ramen (level 2 spicy). Level 2 spicy was a bit too much for my husband as he is not a big fan of spicy food. Level 3 spicy was good for me, it was hotter than I originally anticipated. All in all, the food, service, and atmosphere was very good and we will be returning! read more
