This restaurant was absolutely divine. We ordered the fried green beans, sourdough, olives, pesto corn and chicken thighs to share. The olives were sooo good. The marinade they're in has a very unique flavor. The pesto corn is super creamy and the fried green beans were my favorite dish of the night. Highly recommend that. Chicken thighs were extremely flavorful and tender! It's rare every dish is such a winner, but that's what happened! TLDR- cozy, small spot with good ambience and friendly servers. For 3 people, 2-3 smalls and 2 large plates work well. Avoid the ricotta, everything else was good, specially the leeks and pork Milanese. Cozy spot in Crown Heights right off the S train. The space is a little tight, with only a few tables. The menu is broken up into small plates, large plates and dessert. For 3 people, the menu got 3 smalls and 2 large and that was enough to stuff us, maybe could even do with one less small plate. Nearly everything came with bread, so that was filling. For the small plates, the vinegar leeks had great flavors, although I wish it came warm and with bread. That sauce needs something to sop it up with and eat. The ricotta was nothing exciting, you can skip this. It was rather bland and the spinach on top wasn't seasoned, so it was like two mild/flavorless things on top of each other. The focaccia was good though. The clam toast has good flavors, although the bread was a little oily for my taste. The clam shells make the dish aesthetic but in reality it's a bit bothersome to scoop and put on bread. For the large plates, the flavors of the pork Milanese were great, the piece itself was fried well and tender. The dish really benefits from ALL the flavors being included in the bite, which is hard when it's two straight pieces of anchovy and cabbage. Id suggested the cabbage to be shredded or swapped with another green and for the anchovy to be spreadable. I've been to Harts maybe three times over the years. This last time was especially memorable. It's a very small space and quite loud so if you have any hearing challenges, be forewarned. But go here anyway because it's such a special place. The service is exceptional. I spilled my glass of wine on the table and the server refilled my glass to the top. I was so surprised by that attention to detail and certainly hadn't asked for it. The food is mouthwateringly delicious with a garlic forward menu. We shared the chicken cutlet topped with tahini and cucumbers, the mussel toast, and the pan con tomate. Not a bite was left. Love this gem. read more

I came to Hart's many years ago, and returned recently with pleasant but vague memories. Hart's is part of the same family as The Fly, which explicitly brands itself as a "chicken bar," and yet somehow the menu here is less vegetarian friendly. We had just finished sharing two massive slices of sourdough, and I was looking forward to the custom vegetarian dish that had been promised by the kitchen. What a surprise it was when out came the piece de resistance, two MORE pieces of sourdough bread, this time fried and covered with a cassoulet-esque tomato bean sauce. While I do appreciate the creativity, doesn't bread with tomato sauce feel a bit like what your college roommate who never cooked before makes after a long night out freshman year? What a great time! Hart's was a great intimate evening. The restaurant is small, cozy but warm and inviting. The dim lights create such a romantic and private atmosphere even while sitting next to other tables. It was a nice evening of good service, great conversation and a lovely atmosphere. The food was also very good. The donut appetizer was savory and delicious. The clam toast was pretty good. The trout was incredible. It was light but filling and tasty. My bf really wanted me to try this place but, there is always a wait. So, we decided to show at exactly when they open! It's a small place with about 20 covers. It fills up fast, a hour into opening people were choosing to eat outside (it was cold) and waiting for us to replenish our table. Food: 5/5 I typically don't like non-Asain food but, here was an exception. Our appetizer, the clam bread was so tasty (buttery, garlicky, salty) that I had to stop myself from drinking it. The clams were fresh, grit-free, and delectable. Our entrées were amazing too. I got the bouillabaisse and my bf got the pork. I loved both dishes. The pork was crispy, the alioli and cabbage was heavenly with saltiness of the capers. My dish wasn't acidic, all the seafood was cooked to perfection, and it was deceivingly satisfying. All paired with orange wine - not a typo orange wine does exist! Total damage was about $160 after tip. Service: 5/5 I am lactose intolerant so, when I go to restaurants I expect to be politely poisoned. When the waiter asked if I had any food restrictions I expected it to go into one ear and out the other. The staff was so attentive that every item we ordered that had dairy they made sure to confirm it with us before bring to the table. In fact, when ordering dessert they apologized for not mentioning that the olive cake had dairy sooner (though it had yet to reach the table) and wanted to check with me. They were friendly, knowledgeable (explained orange wine), and very accommodating. All in all, definitely going back and making sure I am first on line since they don't accept reservations. I'm not sure how to describe the food other than perfection. When I took a bite into the tuna appetizer I actually had to take a moment for myself. I went with three girlfriends, we ordered lots of wine (they have a great list), and every single appetizer, along with the fish. I should've taken a picture of the menu, but it was pretty dark. The menu changes so I won't list what we had, but every single thing was remarkable. The sauces on all dishes stole the show. Hart's, sister restaurant of Cervo's, is a great place for dinner in Bed-stuy/Crown Heights. The seafood here is delicious!! My favorite dish of the night was the clam toast because the broth was delicious and the toast soaked it up so well. I wish I ordered a second one, it was that good. The piri piri chicken had great flavor and was well-seasoned and well cooked. I knew it would be great because the owner of Hart's has a chicken restaurant called The Fly nearby. The hake was so well cooked because the skin was so crisp and the fish was still most. So, I took my girl out on a date here. The place was small but comfortable. Seats about 20-24 people. A good spot for a date night. Felt it was pricey for what we got. We shared everything. The food was ok but honestly there just wasn't anything we tasted that we would have to come back for. She ordered the perfect martini which was pretty good. I got the boulevardier then just a ginger beer. The Bourbon drink was okay but I enjoyed the ginger beer better plus it was less than half the price lol We shared their: anchovies on toast and butter marinaded beets, grapefruit and horseradish braised endive, mussels and hazelnut Swordfish, creamy potatoes, fennel and salsa Verde Poached pear, creme anglaise, pistachio and chocolate Sadly, out of all of it.... think our favorite thing was the anchovies on toast which was pretty pricey. I wanted to go somewhere within walking distance from my place that had solid seafood options--upon walking in, the ambiance of the place felt cozy and intimate. The close seating and the candles make this place a great date spot. The food was good--it wasn't amazing or great, but everything tasted simple, clean, and fresh. I expected the heirloom tomatoes to be cold, but they weren't, which caught me off guard on my first bite. The room temp tomatoes actually went well with the clams, so I didn't mind. The swordfish was extremely meaty, and it cut more like a steak or piece of chicken. They barely spoke more then 10 words to us the whole time, and only once did they announce the name of the dish. It just felt like we were bothering them more than be served by them. Nothing was trying to be sold to us and no engagement was made. The seating is clunky and despite other tables available the host sat us in what I would say is the worst table in the house. All the reviews were recommending the clam toast and the lamb burger so of course I had to try them out. After tasting them both, I can see why. Clam toast is basically the definition of a guilty pleasure-- so buttery, garlicky, and the sourdough bread was literally perfect (deliciously crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside). Wish it came with more clams though. The lamb burger, as previous reviews have mentioned, is on the smaller side (and the bun is significantly larger than the burger). Ordered it with anchovies at my waitress's recommendation (I don't dislike anchovies but I'm not exactly a fan of them either) and I'm glad I did-- the taste wasn't overpowering at all and it definitely enhances the flavor of the burger. Burger was incredibly juicy and I really liked the pickled vegetable topping. However the side salad, although nicely dressed, could've been washed better (several of the leaves tasted sandy/gritty; expected better from a restaurant like this) and also, the leaves were so big it was kind of awkward to eat. read more

Hart's restaurant is cute AF! I got a haircut across the street and I noticed people waiting outside to be seated. We walked over and looked over the menu posted on the window. One item leapt out that my wife & I looked at each other and said hell yes. The lamb burger. I'm a simple guy. I like a burger and a beer. If someone is going to go the extra mile and make a kick ass burger? Heck, I'm down. The hostess said there's a 10 minute wait, not a problem. Both of our phones were blowing up, the 10 minutes flew by. I sat and ordered a funky Bloody Mary. My wife wanted iced tea but there wasn't any so the water bottle on the table was put to good use. For an extra charge you can order the Lamb Burger topped with anchovies. My wife makes a face but I'm down for the funk. Lets get that burger rockin'! The Lamb already has a earthy taste, the anchovies gave another flavor complexity to the dish. My only disappointment, the burger patty was a little too rare for my taste. And I asked for ketchup! The waitress looked at me like I had 3 heads. Ketchup has no place in Hart's restaurant! haha The Hart's menu itself is a well thought out and chef'd up menu. Reviewing for Brunch: They were out of the Spanish tortilla, the fried chicken, and chorizo. So it was a lamb burger or eggs for us. We chose eggs. And wow, I can't believe I paid 17 for eggs, onions, scallions, and a scant sprinkle of pecorino. This very flat sad omelette is called a frittata on the menu. I have no idea who in their right mind was like, let's crack 2 eggs in and bowl and fry it, and charge the price of 5 dozen eggs for it. I guess what can be said is that is was cooked properly? I don't even mind that it's a small place where the tables are elbow to elbow. I mind that my neighbors got the French toast and it consisted of a big plate heaped with 3 thick slices of bread browned to gorgeous perfection, while I ordered a more expensive dish and got a sad egg pancake with nothing to accompany it. I also paid 14 dollars for a very ok egg sandwich I totally could have made at home. What's wrong with me. The kitchen is competent, the food, for what it was, is made well, but the consistency of the menu is upsetting. I've been meaning to eat at Hart's forever, and finally got myself there for dinner a few weeks ago. Very small but charming little spot - get a reservation if you can, they don't have many tables and there's not much room at the bar either. The dinner menu was lovely - we had the rabbit special, a fresh, bitter salad, and the clam toast. All simple dishes, but very well executed. Kind of feels like a meal you'd eat at a friend's dinner party, in the best way. Cocktails were also a highlight - strong but interesting. The only off notes during our meal was the olive oil cake, which was dry and not very olive oil-y, and the service at the very end. As we were finishing our drinks, our waitress straight up asked us to leave so they could seat the next table. Kind of weird to me, but get that it's a small spot, so fine. We get ready to go, and my friend briefly steps into the restroom - the waitress then asks me to hold all of my friend's things so she can immediately seat someone at our table. Sorry, they can't even wait another 3 minutes...? I really hate being rushed out of a restaurant, so docking a star for service, even though I loved the food and atmosphere. Upon entering, the restaurant was super cramped and very, very loud. My group of 4 was quickly ushered to our table. (squeezed through the other diners might be a better way to state it) The waiter was very knowledgeable about the wines. We had pretty specific questions and he was able to answer all of them and guide us to a bottle that worked best for us. We ordered: Clam Toast - This was very good. Bread was perfect. I wish we ordered more bread for dipping. Fresh Ricotta - Simple and fresh. Bread was perfect. Yellowfin tuna crudo - 8 little, teeny, tiny, chewy strips. Just okay. Spanish Mackerel - So. Salty. Mackerel is definitely an oily fish, but it was definitely over salted. I was disappointed by this choice. Flavor was missing. Chicken thighs agrodolce - Deliciously overpriced for the amount of food received. Service was friendly, attentive, and knowledgeable. Music was way too loud - my friends and I were shouting over the table and it was just a bit too dark (yes, millennials have vision problems, too!) We left satiated, but not full . I feel like giving this place a bad review means that I know nothing about food, but I just wasn't awestruck like everyone else seems to be. I almost feel guilty for a mediocre review, but my experience was mediocre. 3.5 stars Randomly ended up getting brunch here one day. Didn't even realize it had been on my list of places I wanted to go to until after the meal. We got the lamb burger and the frittata. The lamb burger was yummy although I don't remember being blown away to the point that others are raving about it. The frittata was to my surprise quite thin and chock full of herbs. Not your standard frittata. Food generally seems to lean a bit more saucy / oily (with a penchant for sprinkling cheese on things) than I prefer. When I tell you I was so pumped to eat at this place, I mean it! I've heard such good things about this intimate spot, and I so very wanted it to meet my expectations. However, it really didn't pull through on many fronts, which was so disappointing. (This is the first time I've ever written a 2 star review. At the time, the only seats available were at their long communal table. The host seemed to not want us to sit there initially as they were looking back in a corner section table and said our table wasn't ready yet. So we stepped outside and the host said they would come get us when our table was ready. That...never happened. We had to ask the host again about 10 min later if our table was good, and then they looked at us with confusion like we had never spoken to them. Luckily, we were quickly ushered in. However to our surprise the table they had intended for us was apparently now for another party, and they squished us at the end of the communal table, adding a stool. I understand that seating is very particular for restaurants, but the way this all went down made for a terrible experience from the get-go. We asked if we could sit farther into the communal table as to not literally be in the restaurant's walking path (a server tripped over my friend's stool) or to get the table in the corner that was originally intended for us and the host said "I'm sorry, reservations don't work like that." So if you intended for us to sit here in the first place, why didn't you put us here from the start? Disorganized. Food: Look, if the service sometimes isn't the best, but I'm with good company and eat bomb food, I usually give that stuff a pass. Growing up Asian-American, we know that some of the best food come with subpar service. So I was still really eager to try the food. Let me tell you person to person, where hopefully we're both people who like flavor, the best thing I ate was the sourdough bread. That's how bland and meh everything else tasted. For reference, we got the bread, manchego, olives, clams over toast, I got the pork milanese (literally saltless), and my friends got the branzino (found bones and they said it lacked seasoning). I was SO incredibly disappointed with this meal. Hart's was giving "we're a cool, hip spot that serves seasonal small dishes, but our palette is subdued to appeal to the masses." Drinks: were ok! We had a really good meal at Hart's, right on fancy Franklin, smack dab in the middle of Bed-Stuy (Clinton Hill adjacent, to you and me). The restaurant is smallish- but what it lacks in size, it makes up for in hipster coolness (I never saw so many nose rings). We had the lamb burger and a chicken entree which were wonderful. I think the lamb burger might be a new entrant on my top 5 list of best burgers in NYC (maybe top 6, but who's counting). Anyways, if I had one complaint I would say the food was on the small side given the price. But hey, Bed-Stuy rents don't come cheap I guess... It's a small restaurant and a mixture of communal and private seating, probably 30 seats tots so it feels intimate without being uncomfortable. KenScale: 8.5/10 One best restaurant list that I closely follow is Bon Appetit's America's Best New Restaurants list. Divided into different parts of the country, the list comes up with 50 nominees before narrowing down to 10 best. This year's nominee list from New York City was impressive to say the least, including Aska, Olmsted and Le Coucou which I have all visited and enjoyed very much. And yet, the 10 best list went to an unassuming Mediterranean restaurant in Brooklyn. From the annual lists that this highly regarded magazine churn out every year, I can tell that the staff has an eye for finding neighborhood gems but Hart's hasn't been really on my radar. Is the restaurant as good as advertised by the Bon Appetit editors? I had to find out and brought my wife Jun to trek all the way to an obscure part of Brooklyn to try the food at Hart's. And it turned out to be quite a good and satisfying trip. The virtue at Hart's is how consistent the execution of all dishes was. By now, Jun and I have had over a hundred ricotta dishes in New York City, and yet the silky smooth one accompanied by roasted tomatoes made both of us smile for such elegant simplicity. A fried squid dish at a run-of-the-mill restaurant can get either too strong in flavor or too soggy in texture, but the one at Hart's was more or less perfectly fried for a wonderful texture, and the addition of a hint of aioli on top is all you need in the flavor department. Bon Appetit magazine raved about the clam toast dish at Hart's so I knew we had to try this and it was indeed a marvelous dish, with a surprisingly robust complexity in flavor and texture that wasn't too oily to our pleasant surprise. If I can get a couple of bites of this every breakfast, I would certainly have a better morning! For main dish, we split head-on prawns with pepperonata and chili (the three appetizers we ordered turned out to be quite generous in portion so we only needed one main dish). The prawns were aptly cooked, but it was really the rustic touch of pepperonata and chili that made the dish quite delicious. You can see olive oil cake seemingly everywhere these days, but there was something extra special about the one we had for dessert at Hart's, with its silky smooth texture and not overly sweet flavor that somehow worked beautiful with grapes and whipped cream. Getting a reservation at Hart's wasn't too difficult but the restaurant's dining space is relatively small and it does seem to be a neighborhood favorite, so I would still recommend booking in advance. One gripe I had about Hart's is the wine list's focus on organic and natural varieties, but the cocktails were capably made. The intimate dining space was another plus to our dinner experience, making it a great place for casual dates (there were mostly couples during our visit) and other no-frills dinners with loved ones. Hart's surprised the restaurant world with its appearance in Bon Appetit's list and it wasn't a fluke. Had a great time sitting outside at Hart's for drinks and snacks. We just walked up so there wasn't room in the cute, quaint indoor space but it was fine outside. Their vermouth spritz was incredible, one of the best I've had. We also tried the tuna crudo, the clam toast and the artichoke. I came here on a recommendation from a local barista who raved about The Fly and here. i wanted to like it more, but the experience as someone who couldn't have gluten was lacking. I opted for two smaller dishes because the only main dish option would have been a whole fish and some ramps. I wanted a bit more variety, so I got the Louisiana prawns w/capers (hot) and asparagus & mortadella (cold). The prawns came out first, and the asparagus arrived when I was about halfway through. They were both tasty and balanced dishes, but I was disappointed because I had no way to enjoy the garlic-y buttery broth from the prawns or the flavorful dressing on the asparagus because there was no gluten-free bread. The folks seated next to me were digging into their small plates with hulks of delicious looking bread. I felt like i missed out on a major part of the experience of the dish. My server could have done a better job of recommending dishes. I'd give this place another chance if I were with a friend and could justify trying more dishes. read more

Hart's had been on my list for a while and decided to give it a try today. I'm usually a fan of concise menus, it shows a level of focus and dedication to the product. Unfortunately, once seated nothing really jumped out at me as needing to try; however, I love Spanish tortilla so I gave it a try. It was simply ok. My friend got the BLT, which she enjoyed. The reason this gets two stars from me is really because of the level of services received. It was mediocre at best. It's hovering around 100 degrees outside and I would have expected to be acknowledged soon after walking in the door. Perhaps not instantly, I'm not (that much of) a spoiled millennial but certainly within a few seconds--a "be right with you" would have been fine. Instead, I was standing at the door of a not-so-full restaurant the size of a suburban living room waiting. On the positive side, while it would only be a table of two, I half expected to be asked to wait for the other person to arrive to be seated, however, I was seated as soon as the waitress got to me. The rest of the experience felt pretty rushed. The second guest had barely settled in before she was asked if she knew what she wanted to drink. A welcome was more apt for the moment. The food came out, we ate. As discussed above, the food was fine. But soon after the check came our, respective, cups of water were picked up without a word. I found this to be rude. Final thoughts: there are plenty of restaurants in Brooklyn with superlative food, and many restaurants with superlative service. It's rare to find a restaurant that executes both; unfortunately, for me and my guest, Hart's checked none of these boxes. read more

Cute spot directly outside the Franklin subway station. I live down the street and watched the last restaurant that set up shop in this space shutter before I had a chance to eat there. I didn't want that to happen again, so I waited a couple weeks until the buzz had died down and took my parents when they came to visit. We went for brunch. We started with the yogurt with homemade granola and the olive oil cake - both drizzled with agave and fruit and deliciously light with great flavor. For the entree, both parents got the frittata, I got the fried chicken on a bed of hummus, and my husband got the lamb burger. The frittata was forgettable but DAMN that chicken was amazing. Crispy, juicy and spicy paired a creamy hummus to dip your chicken. The burger was also crack. My only complaint was the side dish. I'm such a square plate person (veggies, grain, protein, dairy) and the fact that there were no French fries with the burger or carbs with the chicken left me wanting mentally, I couldn't have actually physically put more in my stomach. Prices are a bit much, so I'll be back for another special occasion or parental visit. Until then, I hope they last! read more

Hart's Restaurant - The fried chicken!! - New American Near Me - Brooklyn, New York

Hart's, a minuscule Bed Sty restaurant, located under the Framklin elevated subway stop, gets an amazing amount of positive press. The editors of Bon Apetite named it one of the five best new restaurants in the United States! As a result, I booked Hart's for a brunch gathering of six of us. Taking the subway from the West Village was a breeze, even though this was my first time on the subway since 1975. Hey, what happened to tokens? The woman in the booth thought I was nuts when I asked for one. Bedford Stuyvesant was more dangerous than Northwest Syria when I lived in NYC, and the gentrification of the neighborhood was astonishing. We were greeted with friendly hellos and good natured kibitzing when we entered, escaping the bitter cold. Again, I was perplexed because we were several decades older than anyone else in the place. Doesn't anyone over 60 years old go out? What's wrong with you? Get off the damn couch and live life! Our long table for six consumed the tiny room. Friends arrived. We hugged, kissed, (Unlike SLC, people in many places are actually demonstrative) and settled in to talk about anything and everything. The menu was tight, concise, with some very interesting concoctions. The same goes for the wine menu. Everything was good, bordering on excellent. My "sardines and eggs" dish was surprisingly delicious. Bread was tasty and the olive oil cake a hit. What disappointed our group was the "laid back" service. Every server was utterly helpful and charming, but we constantly had to ask for refills of coffee and they forget several orders. I mean, will Hart's survive if they have to comp several orders because the servers forgot to bring them? For our group of six, this happened three times. Okay, I have found this kind of service in almost every Brooklyn restaurant I have tried, including Michelin starred joints. Is it in the water? I just hope it's not a vestige of that "hipster" nonchalant attitude towards everything. Look where that got this country? Check out who's running it. Hart's was a bit disappointing, and I doubt any of us will schlep to Bed Sty for a return visit. However, Hart's is a great addition to the neighborhood. read more
