It's my local grocer and if you live anywhere from Ballston to Courthouse, it's likely your local grocer (not counting Wholefoods). What's not to really like? They have stuff that's good quality and the place is usually tidy. It does get crowded on weekends and after work but that's when you and me and everyone else really has time to go get stuff. This is my favorite traditional grocery store in the area (I'm excluding my beloved Trader Joe's from this group). This location beats the Ballston one because parking is not a complete disaster. They have both a free underground garage (you'll have to take your cart down in the elevator after you check out, but it's quick) and an outdoor lot. The garage is fantastic when it's raining and that's the only time I've ever seen it crowded. Still, I've never had trouble finding a spot. The customer service is great and the reason why I shop at Harris Teeter. They've always been polite and helped me find what I was looking for, returned things for me when I bought the wrong item, and issued rain checks when I wanted a "hot" item. Produce and the deli counter here definitely beat Giant and Safeway. I don't think the prices are any more expensive than typical Giant and Safeway prices, but I generally shop the sales, buy ingredients and not pre-packaged food, and occasionally use coupons. read more

Good alternative to the horrible Rosslyn Safeway - just 3.5 miles away down Lee Highway. Probably a bit more expensive but you don't feel like you're in a dungeon while shopping and the place is actually sanitary. The bad: Little kids pushing "training" shopping carts ... terrible idea. Parking is tight unless you are willing to squeeze into just any spot and suffer dings. Weekend shopping on Sunday is to be avoided. Overall, not bad at all and probably will make this my regular weekly shopping ... although the Rosslyn Safeway is the default choice for quick mid week trips to purchase PACKAGED goods only. Look on the bright side: At least Harris Teeter isn't Whole Paycheck. It's a good middle ground between disgusting Safeway and Whole Paycheck which has an even worse parking situation in Clarendon... read more

Fortunately, I only saw one child pushing a "shopper in training" cart this morning, but his Dad really looked like he was in control and looked as though nothing would escape him anyhow! I have been in the HT in Ballston a few times since it is closer, but I am now a convert and will go a few extra miles and come here. I love this Harris Teeter. I found it while in college and just adore it. In fact, I now live in Silver Spring, Maryland and still drive to this HT just to shop for my groceries. I perfer this location to the one at Ballston just because I find it better organized and the staff more friendly, but the parking situation at Ballston always seems easier. This location though does have a parking garage under the store. I will warn though that as you pull into the parking lot there is a killer pothole. It has been there for years, and I can imagine a lot of cars have suffered serious damage from it. read more

Now this is a great grocery store. Massive. 24 hours. Almost always well-stocked, except for during times of ridiculous snow paranoia. Full-service pharmacy (no need for CVS visits anymore) pretty darn good beer selection (for a grocery store, anyway) and excellent wine selection. Customer service is typically friendly and excellent, although like anywhere you get a dreg once in awhile. Excellent value for fresh subs for lunch. Their salad bar is OK, if a little joyless at times, but that's probably because I used to go there almost every day when I worked nearby. They have a good selection of fresh produce, groceries and great beers, the restroom is usually very clean, but the prices..... a hunk-a cheese the exact same brand and type that I can buy at Giant's for $4.99 is $7.99 here -- why????? Even the Store-brand mouthwash is expensive. And...hahaha (really NOT funny actually), I asked on employee where the Mincemeat was (it's for pies..... it's for pies... it comes in a BOTTLE....it's been sold for EONS.....) and she said...."Um....Minced meat???" While going down aisle 1, I happened to see two mice. I reported my sightings to store manager, Brian Matthews and he gave me a very nasty attitude in the presence of other customers. It was unbelievable the way he acted. In addition to that, I overheard another customer mentioned that she saw a woman who carries a stroller shoplifting on several occasions. She mentioned the managers are aware of it, but never calls the police or approaches the woman. They just allow the shoplifter to get away with stealing from the store whenever she choses. I'm considering shopping elsewhere, because mice in a grocery store is very unsanitary. read more

As much as I agree with the angrier comments compared to many other grocery stores here I find this the best 1. There is no crowding you if you stay in the store looking for something they have security and secret staff or something no ones looking at you when you go to the beauty section your allowed to look around. 2.Its pretty and now contains decent pizza 3. the quality of things are arguably better the wholefoods design and freshness wise 4. new things come 5. there is more different Asian candy produce which I really like though not asian 6. Some things are actually cheaper the Safeway or at least look like it like lotion is one which is definitely cheaper some days 7.Though some of staff seem very rude(I have had a couple unprofessional experiences) they will help you and just seem used to there own person world view and assume yours is the same and most unprofessionalism seen very innocuous 8. There are natural beauty products though sadly not much natural hair products that don't look like your trying to make a not nice looking bush 9. The staff look happy just stressed and gruff 10. Bur people who look young coming with parents even without them paying might not want to come to this store... as one guy who used to or is still working there seem to not like young adults/teens + family units and will call you spoiled in a heart beat especially if you do not have a very nice family read more

I LOVE this Harris Teeter. Within the last couple of years they have completely renovated this and it looks really great. Even though I loved it before, now it's even better. They have so many good options for getting food right there. I've only gotten subs, soup, and pizza, but the the options are actually appetizing, and less expensive than the same quality and quantity as you can get other places. They are always well stocked with fresh produce. There has never been anything I haven't been able to find at this Harris teeter. The lines are never too long and the people are always willing to help me. Don't even get me started on the free samples. But actually I LOVE this place. At one point I was going 4 times a week. I got my friend a harris teeter gift card for her graduation. I always get secret Santa and last minute gifts her. I talk to the pans in the baking aisle because they have such a beautiful selection of cookware. It's within walking distance but now that I have access to a car it's even easier. Some people complain about the parking, but I've always been able to find a space. Were VIC card members and my family has already saved more than $500 this year, even though Harris teeter is our "uh oh we're out of milk" store, not our main grocery store. One tip: don't go on fridays at 3. All the middle schoolers from the local schools are there because it's the only shopping center nearby. I always feel terribly alarmed when I go and am surrounded by so many small people. read more

I like to go here since their meats and seafood are good quality - but I always seem to have a negative experience. Usually it is bad grocery packing (smooshed bread, upside down sushi, etc) todays experience was a slower checker. Despite only being 3rd in line I waited about 20 minutes. Now I am afraid of getting salmonella since I had raw chicken in my cart. While it is inconvenient I will go here for fish and meats but will stick to the express line - it is just not worth it anymore. read more

This is my neighborhood store, which I prefer over the Safeway right accross the street. Clean, well stocked, no problems typically. Easy in and out. My only issue is if I have to deal with the service desk, likely as not, they are rude or short with you. I was standing nearby one time and hear the person on duty loudly complain that the customers spoiled. read more

On the whole, I like this store. Just want to point out something to shoppers that they may want to beware of. On Thursday morning I was at the store and going to buy some fresh asparagus. The white label on the asparagus said product of USA, but the inside of the rubber band holding the asparagus said product of Mexico. I went to customer service and asked about this contradiction. I was told after some investigation that the asparagus is from Mexico not US. I was at the store again this morning and looked at the asparagus again. It's still had the white label saying product of USA on it, with the inside of the rubber band saying product of Mexico. I thought the store would have corrected this discrepancy. I find it deceptive on their part and wonder what else is mislabeled that they know about. read more

This review is for an experience quite a while ago, but I was thinking about it and it's too good not to share. I had knee surgery and (obviously) was unable to walk, let alone drive. HT's online order/ pick-up service was a lifesaver during that time. I lived by myself, but friends were nice enough to drive me to pick-up my groceries. On one occasion, I placed an order but it was snowing terribly and my friend didn't want to drive in the weather. I called the store to see what I could do since the order had already been fulfilled. The Teeter guy offered to cancel the order, but added that he could also deliver them for me. That's definitely not something Teeter does as part of "Express Lane" service. I was surprised but not in a position to turn down his generosity. A little while later a kid (I say kid but I have no idea how old he was) showed up with my many bags of groceries. Mind you, that particular store was several miles from my house and he had driven over in the snow after his shift was over. I tried to give him a tip and he absolutely refused to take it. That HT employee seriously restored my faith in humanity. I told corporate HT about it and I hope the kid got some sort of recognition. That experience was obviously extraordinary, but it speaks to the overall customer service at HT- this one and others. Everyone is always very friendly and helpful. Plus it's a great grocery store. I loved Harris Teeter before it was purchased by Kroger. The quality has gone downhill. I ordered from Harris Teeter 5 days in advance. They only filled half of my order. I arrived at my time slot to pick up my purchases to find another customer in front of me. I would not recommend the online express lane shopping. It's not worth the service fee when you have to go back to the store to pick up what they did not fill in the first place. read more

Store is extremely disappointing. Very limited organic fruits, vegetables, and meats. Floor design is terrible: too narrow in entrance where customers bump into each other in fruits and vegetables, and you must take an elevator to 2nd floor to pharmacy. Not bad once you get into the store but... I generally like to try out an establishment a couple of times before I give a review. I think it gives me a better idea of what the place has to offer. So for this HT, I can say that I've been a number of times. I know there are a ton of positive reviews on here and I can say that I agree with them for the most part. The ready made sushi is great, better than at the new Giant at Penrose, of which I am a big fan. The store also offers a good pharmacy on the 2nd floor, red box, coin machine, etc. etc. The reason that I am giving this HT two stars is because the parking lot and drive in is always a disaster. Try to avoid HT at rush hour or your typical busy sat/sun or you may find yourself circling for parking. The spots to the right of the entrance are extremely tight, not a good feeling if you like your space. Either that, or you'll find yourself backed up trying to leave as the exit is only 2 lanes and frequently jams up because of the traffic light. This HT is not bad in a bind but for my choice, I'll travel a little farther for an easy in and easy out. read more

Two days before Thanksgiving: Harris Teeter on Harrison Street is re-organizing the store. There are stacks & carts of items blocking the aisles. This will just make shopping take longer as everyone tries to figure out the new layout and get through bottlenecks in the aisles. In addition, many employees who could otherwise man the cash registers are instead moving items in the store. There were only 5 registers open, each with long lines. And this on one of the busiest grocery shopping days of the year. Have to give Harris Teeter management an "F" on this. read more

The store has gone downhill. I went in and the produce dept. was depressing. Most of it, was on the breaking point. The store had a strange smell. Some of the meat looked old. What is the deal with this store? Clerks are rude and often mean to children. I have spoken to the manager about the policy of leaving no shopping carts in the parking garage. How are you suppose to bring more than one baby in the store if there are no carts in the parking garage?? No one seems to care? 24 Hour Grocery store - need I praise it anymore? This grocery store is the closest thing I've found to a Publix around here. Very clean and open layout with most everything I'd want to buy from an american grocery store. The location is in a cute little plaza with a variety of restaurants, starbucks, liquor store, etc. I dont' generally buy the veggies here because most of it is "organic" and quite pricey, but everything looks really fresh. Sometimes I buy my broccoli here. They make pretty good sandwiches and I enjoy their sushi every so often. They have realyl really good dietz & watson rare roast beef. Moo! heh I am beginning to think I mainly come here to rob them of their dairy section. i buy my chicken here quite a bit. hmm... The people are friendly and they're always having specials on one thing or another. So keep an eye out and make sure you nab a VIP card for those extra savings! read more

Don't think I'll be going there again, there are several other grocery stores in the area. Went there around noon on the Saturday before the Super Bowl, while the parking was tight, it didn't seem that busy inside, but it was busy enough that the carts were in short supply. I asked the "customer service" desk and I was rudely told that all the carts were in use, this wasn't the case, it just that they hadn't done a good job in managing the carts and bringing them back. While shopping I almost got plowed over by one of their in-house shoppers, the place wasn't that packed, but I did need to maneuver around several carts that were filled with empty boxes and just left in the aisle (I guess this is part of their cart management issue), then on checkout only half the cash registers were open, I was asked to go to self checkout, but that line was long also. Seems that whoever is managing the place needs to go back to school, because they're doing a horrible job. read more

I do about 40% of my grocery shopping here. I go here over Safeway and BJ's for selection and the pleasant environment, wide aisles, etc. Great beer and wine selection. But it's in the Lee-Harrison Shopping Center, which is a nightmare for parking. So I usually go elsewhere during peak hours. Prices are a little higher here as compared to Safeway, too. read more

Let me start by saying I have worked nearby for 10 years plus so I am very familiar with the store. They have a good selection of day to day items so no complaints there. The prices are not that great. Whoever is the manager of the store really needs to read some of the comments listed in other reviews. The salad bar as pricey as it is there are often times when the lettuce or other Items are finished and never replaced. The cucumbers are cut so thick its a joke. Often not all the salad dressings are available. The pre made food at the deli section is shipped in and tastes (well like supermarket food) The upstairs medicine/ toiletries section is not convenient. The worst part of the store is checkout. Never enough cashiers. The express well its manned by one person sometimes two and its just not up to par. The self service counters are often hogged by people with a full cart of groceries NO EXPRESS self checkout. Having shopped at Wegman's there is no comparison. Giant way better, Safeway way better. I been to other Harris Teeter stores and while they are not great they are way better than this location. I hope the new renovation helps with some of these issues. read more

This is where I do my grocery shopping. It's clean, well lit, and convenient. Yes, the prices are more than Giant, less than whole foods. it is open 24 hrs. I am not a fan of the way they keep the 'good' wine and toiletries upstairs, but that is the layout. The worst times to come here are Sunday 12-6 or Sat morning. Try Monday night or Sunday at 9 am if you must come on a weekend. Parking can be hard but there is an underground garage, so take note. They tend to have run out of good produce by Sunday afternoon, so I've stopped going at that time. The seafood counter is wonderful- lots of good advice. read more

This is my second choice HT - the location on Glebe is slightly more convenient. The clientele is more family-oriented, so they're likely to have better stock of the items that seem to run out at the Glebe location. Like the other HT, good quality, good prices, clean store, good selecton. Sometimes it's not adequately staffed and the checkout lines can get long, but otherwise, this is a good HT, and certainly higher quality than the Safeway just across the street. read more

I love this store, but sometimes the cashier's ability to bag or system of bagging drives me nuts. No, even though I am plenty strong do not put 8 or more cans in one bag, PERIOD. However, the store is always clean, the staff friendly, and the shelves are almost always well stocked. However, don't expect to get the best sale items on Monday if the sale ends Tuesday. read more

I try to do the bulk of my shopping at trader joes, but when I need to make a midnight run or can't make it out there HT is the closest. Pros are, it's convenient, good selection of organic foods. Cons are, it's a little on the expensive side, and the employees are not friendly at all. I actually avoid coming here because the staff just seems so miserable. read more

Today I experienced an uncomfortable moment when I heard an associate named Aricka being very rude to her coworker when he was trying to call her attention to let her know that there were costumers waiting in Costumer Section. He was being discreet and gentle to let her know and she was on the phone and yelled with a street attitude, "Don't you see I'm busy on the phone with a costumer!!"I didn't know whether to leave or stay. I understand sometimes we get overwhelmed when we are short on staff but I wonder how she treats the rest when costumers are not around. She has to low down her tone and attitude. read more

Also, if you park in the free underground garage (ALL the way around the back, past the loading dock), it's not nearly as stressful an experience getting in and out. I have been shopping here for over 10 years, but I have found the customer service has declined this past year. Bread has been packed with bottles, cleaning products packed with food, and tonight items were rang up as the wrong item. I told the cashier she ran up the wrong item, but she either did not understand or she did not care, so I just asked her to remove the items. Even though Harris Teeter is close to my home, I have had a number of frustrating experiences recently and have decided to find a new grocery store. read more

The store is good, it's one of the "two story" Harris Teeter's because the pharmacy and hair stuff is on the second floor. You have a choice of using stairs or an elevator to get up and down, and the elevator is big enough to accommodate a shopping cart. It's pretty busy, and the area near the entrance is pretty crowded, but it's still a Harris Teeter, and they seem to be uniformly clean, with cordial employees. I highly recommend that you park in the underground garage, however. This particular shopping plaza attracts an unusually high number of "entitled" types, and the parking lot behavior is atrocious. I call it the "Plaza of the Angry Yuppie" because of that. The fact that all the parking spaces are narrow adds to the chaos. It's too bad because there are some very nice stores here, and I'd patronize it more often if it wasn't for the tiny-brained morons who will embarrass themselves for a parking space. read more

I continue to be amazed this place is so popular. Hasn't changed a bit (in a bad way). Despite its convenience, I stopped going here because they had chronic inventory issues (always out if key items). Tried them again today, only to again find they are out of key items - like milk. No organic milk at all and almost no regular milk. Also had no gluten free breadcrumbs. And a lb of organic beef was about 50% more expensive. Plus they seem ignorant of the concept of refunds for using reusable bags. So I will continue to travel twice the distance to go to Whole Foods and Giant. Wake up Harris Teeter! read more
