Across the street from Costco in Arlington is a Filipino bakery with sweet and savory pastries. Behind two glass boxes, each pastry comes with a helpful description. Popping in after a doctor's appointment with my nine-year-old daughter, we split their Nutella doughnut. Full of flavor and amazing texture, we ordered another!

We came in for Lapu Lapu but stayed for Gwenie's! The Ube Doughnut caught my eye and exceeded expectations. The doughnut was so light and fluffy and the cream filling was not heavy. There were a couple other flavors and one doughnut is large enough to share!

The guy in the beanie at the front is always so sweet and accommodating, making recommendations and even fixing a drink. We didn't really enjoy my favorites. Here would be the ube pie and the ube latte. I would love to try more of the Ube desserts like the ube flan

I wish I had more pictures to share but it was so dam* good that I ate it all. The doughnuts are soft and airy. Literally when you bite into it you can hear the sound of the air bursting out all while the flavor is bursting in your mouth. And yes there are more than just doughnuts, cake, panel and more. And the other five star bonus is that Lapu Lapu shares this space. Visit both, you will not regret it! Just typing this has my mouth watering!!! The service is great, the options are plentiful and you will leave happy.

Their pandan donut was delicious! Fluffy on the inside, generous and tasty filling, and covered in sugar on the outside. Would definitely get this again. Apparently their donuts are popular and tend to sell out later in the day. The ube cheesecake is also good. The crust is made with coconut croaked which is interesting. The slice is a little small given the price. I loved their Mamon chiffon cakes. I got the pandan flavor and devoured it in one sitting. They have an excellent texture and are not too sweet. Like castella cake it was light and fluffy probably from using whipped egg white when baking. The ube pan de sal was a disappointment. The bread was dry, there was not enough filling, and the cheese was not melted after heating up. I would come back to try their ube soft serve and other Filipino desserts. The cashier was friendly and gave pretty good recommendations. They have seating inside but seems like most people take to-go.

-Super friendly and welcoming staff -Asian flavoured baked goodies is always a plus (pandan, ube, mango cream) -Come earlier so that you can get a better offering -I had two of the brioche donuts and a Jasmine tea. The tea was legit and though I usually don't like brioche donuts, the cream filling of the mango and pandan were light and real-tasting as opposed to artificial. -Definitely give it a shot if you're in the area!

Yummy! Stopped here after some friends raved about food they had at a Yelp event. It's a cute place that shares space with Lapu Lapu. I was not disappointed. Service was great and the matcha and pie were delicious. I'm getting text about an earl grey matcha and I'm trying to find an excuse to go back to that area and try it.

Tiny Philippine bakery/coffee shop with just a few seats, that is tucked away right next to another small Philippine-style spot with hot food. I came here with my fiancé and we each tried a latte, her a vanilla latte and me a salted caramel one. She thought that hers was a little sweet, but mine was great. That being said, the place didn't fill our cups up all of the way with coffee, so it felt like they skimped out on us a little. We tried the hot food from the place attached to here, but it was pretty sub-par. We each got breakfast sandwiches that had eggs that were scrambled, but done so over easy, so the egg fell all over the place.

Goonies's pastries are delicious! Love the fact that they have a plethora of pandan-flavored, pastries, and goodies! The staff is super nice, too. Someone bought the last pandan doughnut the second day (in a row) that I went there, but she offered me a free cupcake(also pandan) instead, in honor of their saint day. Ambience is open air but a bit tight. They share the space with Lapu Lapu, who uses their bread in their own breakfast sandwiches. They're both Filipino bakeries,/restaurants, probably owned by the same person/group. Food options and order area for the shared space of Gwenie's and Lapu Lapu

This is a cute Filipino gem in the Pentagon City area. I was astonished by the variety of goods as some Filipino-speciality bakeries only have a few items. The Spanish bread and mango items immediately drew my attention. To order, you either pick up the items you want to purchase or you talk to the cashier and request the items you want behind the counter. They were super friendly and excited to serve the local community. Overall, the food tasted pretty good and I would return back to try even more of their selection :)

I'm such a big Ube fan that Gwenie's was summoning me like the goblin mask. I tried the Ube matcha, Ube bun, and Ube donut. It's not hard to find right across from Costco and the two people working were so nice! The Ube matcha wasn't bad but I've had better. The real star is the pastries. This bun and donut were so delicious I devoured them like the Ube-lover I am . I'll be back Gwenie!

I'm so glad that there is now a Filipino store with Filipino pastries, drinks and sandwiches. (Refer to my Lapu Lapu review for more info) I do think that the pastries were a bit of a let down. I think the cassava cake was a bit dry but that could be because it's one of the items premade and ready to buy. My friends ordered the doughnuts and sio pao and they seemed to like those more. The ube cream in the matcha tasted a bit too artificial ube for me and had lots of food coloring. I think I'd prefer something with a bit of coconut and less ube to balance it out. The space is relatively small so it does get packed quickly and there's a column in the center of the seating area. I'd definitely come back to give their other items a try.

I already stopped by Gwenie's twice in the past week! It's conveniently located in the same space as their sister cafe Lapu Lapu (known more for their breakfast sandwiches and the infamous ube soft serve). Gwenie's is more known for their Filipino and Asian-inspired cafe drinks and their pastries. Either way, having both so easily accessible to me is not good for my health or wallet. I have tried their pandan brioche doughnut and love the soft and fluffy texture with its delicate sugar layer. The pandan cream actually taste like pandan and it's not too sweet. I would love to try their ube one eventually. Also, their other pastry items and cakes look delicious. I tried their MATCHA UBE LATTE (8) earlier today and thought it was a too sweet. Surprisingly, the ube cream overpowered the flavors of matcha, given that ube is usually a more delicate flavor compared to matcha. However, when I got to the end of my drink, it started to have a bitter after taste that I didn't enjoy. Overall, I didn't think the drink was worth the price and probably wouldn't get it again.

It's located in a strip shopping center, so parking is super easy and accessible, and the restaurant itself is very easy to find. Walking in, the space is extremely clean, well-lit, and nicely decorated. Now let's talk about the real highlight: the variety. They have dinner plates, bowl options, and à la carte items. I went with one of my favorites, the lechon. They were out of the roasted version, but the staff recommended the fried pork instead, and it did not disappoint. I came in around 7:30, and they close at 8, so I was trying to be mindful and not hold them up. But the woman at the counter was incredibly kind and told me not to rush at all--"you're already inside, take your time." That level of hospitality really stood out. She even took the time to walk me through the menu, which I appreciated, even though I'm already familiar with Filipino food. The food itself? Amazing. The lechon was perfectly crispy, flavorful, and cooked just right. The portion size was generous, and it came with two Lumpia that were hot, fresh, and delicious. It also included a soda, which made it feel like a complete, satisfying meal. Overall, this place is a 10/10. Great food, great portions, and even better customer service. I'd highly recommend stopping by.

The women working here were kind and helpful. You order at the counter in the back, and they will bring your food to your table. Menu options abound, but the only menu was the display screen above and in back of the counter. Unfortunately, the display screen is hard to see and there are no descriptions with the pictures/items. Mang Eton really needs to provide some printed menus. While the online menu does contain descriptions, the online descriptions don't necessarily match what is available. Anyways.... For a starter, we ordered the siomai. These were plump and tasty. We wish they would give more of the excellent dipping sauce than the tiny thimble of sauce that they do give you. Note: the combo meals also include a couple pieces of siomai. I ordered the Combo #1, which came with a piece of fried chicken, 2 lumpia, shrimp chips, rice and pancit. The lumpia had an excellent flavor. The fried chicken and pancit were okay. JP ordered the Combo #3. The only difference between the Combo #1 and Combo #3 is that the Combo $3 comes with fish instead of chicken. It also comes with a skewer of meat (pork?), which was good. We were the only non-Filipino customers. I plan on coming back to try the halo-halo dessert and to order some more yummy siomai.

The space is in the basement of two long townhouses with a small passage in the middle. It's an unusual layout, with the host stand around the middle of the first townhouse (a small bar area is in front of it) and I had no idea they had the second townhouse space until they took us through the small passage. It was a Wednesday at 6:30 PM and the place was busy. Our dining room was pretty noisy. It was also difficult to get the waiter's attention, because the long, narrow layout meant he couldn't see parts of our table. Also, at the start of the meal, he overfilled the water pitcher, spilling water on the table and floor. That said, he was very friendly and helpful with suggestions and splitting the bill. We visited for a minor special occasion, which the restaurant recognized with a small card -- this was a nice touch, and one that many higher end restaurant miss. The menu is very large and a bit overwhelming for a first time visitor. There are 16 desserts. I like the variety, but it feels like overkill, and frankly I'm skeptical of all restaurants with huge menus -- is every dish really a winner? will they execute everything well? (Side note: the website menus link to Canva files which are super annoying to browse) We got the Laing ($16) with mushrooms ($5), Chicken Adobo ($19), and Sizzling Sisig ($22). All three came with rice, with a small upcharge for garlic rice. The inclusion of rice, and the upcharge, could have been more clearly noted on the menu. We shared our dishes, and I would have liked some serving spoons included with them. My favorite was the Laing. I had never had it before, so the flavors were novel and I liked them a lot. The stewed taro leaves reminded me a bit of creamed spinach, in a good way. It had strong coconut flavor, plus some spice when you got a chili pepper. The adobo was good but not great. I liked that the chicken was deboned -- a pleasant surprise. Flavors were good, but I wanted them to be punchier. The Sisis was my least favorite. It was a standard version of the dish, not very interesting. We also had the Ube Bread Pudding with Ube Ice Cream ($12) for dessert. This was good, but I wouldn't describe it as a bread pudding. It was thinner and denser than a traditional bread pudding, with a shape and consistency that reminded me more of a brownie or a crumble. I would love to return and try more of the menu.

In all, this place is an outstanding family owned small business with a great selection of both prepared and grocery type . The dishes are authentic and very well prepared. The price point is great too and the servings are generous. I highly recommend you give this place a try when in the area.
