First time at Manila Mart after having heard about it so many times and let's just say I'm pleasantly surprised! I will say prepare a budget cause there's a lot to get, I ended up spending around $40 for everything I got. Let's start with the beef lumpia. It was crispy and tasted pretty good. I'm a sucker for spice so I would've loved it to be a little spicier or maybe offer some chili oil on the side. Next is the star of the show, the lechon kawaii bowl. The pork is so tender and perfectly crispy! I added garlic rice instead of the usual which was a great addition. I asked to try their vinegar sauce which comes with garlic and jalapeño in it which I found to be amazing. Lastly, the taro milk tea is heavenly, I'm still thinking about it!!! The service was friendly and because it was my first time they even offered me a coupon for the next time I come back and I will definitely be back! I'd heard about this spot from Toni and Manila Mart's social media (which, by the way, is top-tier) -- so I finally had to check it out. Here's how it went. AMBIANCE: Parking: Parking plaza, room for a lot of cars. Seating: Plenty of seating good for large and small groups, maybe about 30 people. Vibes: I'm not too familiar with Maryland, but I learned this place is near the University of Maryland. It's not exactly a college-town hangout, more like a cozy community plaza packed with good eats. The vibe is warm, homey, and unmistakably Filipino -- casual, community-driven, and full of those comforting kitchen aromas. You can tell locals love it here for real, no-frills Filipino cooking. There are not many filipino markets or restaurants in DC, Maryland, and Northern Virginia and this by far was one of two closest to me according to Google. You guessed it, a field trip indeed it was... on a Sunday. With no particular crave during my 1st visit to Manila Mart, I did grab a few items: Sago gulaman Gwenie's Pandan cake (slice) - $10.49 Sapin sapin Chicken BBQ on a stick - 1pc $3.89 Laing Sisig - 1/2lb in 16oz container $10.99 Lechon Kawali - 1/2lb in 16oz container $18.00 Garlic rice Chicken Asado siopao - 4pcs $18.89 Goldilock's Polvoron (ube) - one bag (15pcs) $14.79 My Shaldan (lime) There wasn't much option when I arrived and the team was clearly wrapping up busy clearing the steam table as hot lamps were already turned off. A few points to mention - the amount of sisig I received in the 16oz plastic container was 5 tablespoons at best, far from 1/2lb charged. The flavor was weak and I couldn't get past the amount of grease it looked like bottom of the pan serving... this does not travel well. The siopao labeled 4.5oz each had at least a tablespoon of filling in one, 3 have been eaten all the same - flat and sparse flling. The laing was flavorful and the kawali's crunch was holding on to its last hour. I appreciate their spin on the new sauce, but can't replace the OG Mang Tomas for sure. I'll stick to Gwenie's desserts when I visit her shop in MoCo. This visit was very friendly but left me completely disappointed. Few appetizers are as tasty as the scalding hot Lumpia plucked right out of the pie-shaped tins they give you with a carryout order. Manila Mart's Lumpia aren't the only five-star delights you could head home with or purchase there to eat on site. They also offer noodle dishes (including Pancit Patabok, thick rice noodles tossed with house-made shrimp gravy), vegetable dishes, and meat-centered dishes (my wife loved the grilled liempo or pork belly), both in their regular menu and in the specials. I saw Chef Toni's videos, and then I ate next door and then I followed Manila Mart on Instagram and then I watched Chef To I again and again on IG and thought we have to visit!!! This place did not disappoint!!! Pro Tip: it's busy and non stop so come early and save a seat before you get in line to order. And you can order in two places there is the main register and next to the bar the dip and go section, which could be quicker. Now to the food, the adobo was GOOD, not the best adobo I've ever had (shoutout to Auntie Loida) but yes I'm coming back for more, garlic rice , yum!!! The drinks yummy!!! I actually don't mind it as a shopping venue. It's a small Filipino store and you can get different products here. I really came to try their food but I was more satisfied at the grocery shopping piece. Just want to get that out of the way first The only food that I did try was the dessert: Halo Halo and it's mostly ice and has a weird red bean consistency. I've never had this dessert before so I don't really know what to make out of it, but I thought $8 for it was extremely overpriced. I didn't eat the bean thing because it was hard and unpalatable to me. The mango ice cream that I came with was delicious but honestly I could have done without the entire dessert for the most part. I never pass them and not stop for something... it's usually the cassava cake if nothing else. I forgot to call him & I ate the entire cake on my own. I'll have to make it up to him. The grocery section is nicely organized, not overly crowded BUT you can find pretty much everything you need to keep a well stocked kitchen. Ordered a chicken adobo rice bowl which is served with rice and egg-for 9.95 the portion is generous -we shared between 2 people and it was plenty-the chicken is flavored perfectly and mixes well with the rice.also had pork lumpia which was seasoned and fried to perfection! I have been a regular patron of Manila Mart and I can confidently say that this Filipino restaurant is an icon. While I post pictures of two items, don't be fooled. I have found most of the items on their menu to be flavorful. It's both a restaurant and a Filipino market. If you're a Bangus/milkfish fish fan like I am (high five) , this place is for you. The restaurant is clean and has a street market feel to it, where you can snack on tasty grub and shop at the same time. My personal favorites are their chicken adobo, bangus fish (one of the best tasting fish), garlic rice, pork bbq skewers, sisig, and pork tamarind soup. My fiance got the chicken adobo and I thought it was fine, not my favorite. The sinigag was good and a little bit spicy. I have high spicy tolerance. Unfortunately, the experience didn't quite live up to the expectations. I ordered the regular palabok -- it had good flavor but was dry and overly salty. I stopped by to get my usual order of the beef lumpia shanghai and the pre-packaged chicken asado siopaos; I was told that it would take, at most, 8 minutes for the lumpia, as they are fried-to-order (which is the typical wait time). About 15-20 minutes passed by, and I'm seeing that all the customers that came in after me have received their orders; none of the staff made any eye contact nor were they willing to provide any updates on the wait time. One of the staff members finally comes out - I'm thinking that they're going to apologize and say that my order was well on its way; instead, they stated that they had just received a large catering order, so I would have to wait another 10-15 minutes. Really? This is when I finally realized and accepted the fact that the staff here really has no regards for other people's time, is super dismissive, prioritizes certain orders/customers, and really couldn't care less in how to remediate issues at hand. There was no apology, so I basically told them that I wanted a full refund on my purchases. They had the nerve to ask if I wanted a receipt - um, yes, because I don't trust you. I went here with my brother today. The food selection was good they have plenty of good Filipino groceries available. It can be a bit pricey though. But the thing that surprised me the most is the combo meal prices as we looked at the menu. There were no set prices for the combo meals. And we checked our receipt and saw that we got charged $8.99 for the lechon kawali and another $8.99 for the Corned beef. I though it would be like $12.00 for the whole thing since lechon kawali is a but more pricey but it was $17.98 for the whole combo meal. Unfortunately, the prices are not always listed so I always go to the register unsure of what my total will be. I know one time, I bought an unlabeled slice of ube pie and it ended up being $10. The food can be good, but it's inconsistent and so overpriced. I went here today and ended up paying $2 for gummy rice when last time i visited, the rice was fine. There is one reason why I don't mind going to the DMV (technically MVA in this state), and that's because this gem is less than a mile down the road from a branch. I saw other cars in line for the VEIP self-service kiosk drag along people to keep them company, but me, I was happy to have my delicious takeout keep me occupied. Sometimes Manila Mart gets so busy the cashier lines get bit disorganized, but they're always polite when taking my order, and when handing it to me as it's ready. The ETAs tend to be fairly accurate, and I even got an apology when the turon I ordered took longer than expected (the extra wait didn't faze me since I was asking for something I knew they were probably assembling and frying from scratch). Besides, I always end up finding some cool new snack or specialty ube ingredient to buy while I wait for my food order. There's a handful of bar stools at the drink counter if the tables are full. Four stars and change. I'll probably still traipse up to Gaithersburg if I'm hankering for some crispy pata (MG gets the skin just right) or lechon (KYJ specializes in it for a reason), but Manila Mart's pancit and sisig really scratch the Filipino food itch, and their dinuguan is the best I've had in the county. Manila Mart is a 30 minute drive from where I live and the closest place I can get Filipino food, so it comes to a huge relief that the chefs in Manila Mart's kitchen know their way around shrimp paste. Manila Mart has all the classic Filipino cuisines you know and love: Sisig, Kare Kare, Lumpia, Palabok, and Chicken Adobo. They have food for dine in, take-out, desserts, and catering. Ready made dishes mean you can get in and out quickly, but sitting down to dine in is the best, as you get your food freshly fried and piping hot. Manila Mart's food is pretty affordable, as you get good portions of rice and vegetable dishes, though I did notice my Sisig portion size was quite small. Flavor wise, I've been spoiled on my grandmother in-law's Filipino food, which Manila Mart can't beat, but it did bring a lot of memories from visiting her. Of the food I tried, I think there strongest dish is their Palabok and Lumpia which are just a wonder of texture and flavor. The Sisig was a bit dry, and the milk fish didn't have enough sourness to it, but both were still devoured. Manila Mart's smoothies are a huge hit. They're thick, refreshing, and bursting with flavor. I tried the Ube and Avocado shakes and they are absolutely perfect on a hot day. Manila Mart's mart section has imported items from south east Asia. I snatched some of my favorite Filipino snack foods, some sauces for cooking, and was very tempted to buy some balut, but realized how much I had already spent that day. The biggest knock against Manila Mart is that both restaurant and grocery section operate under a single register. So if you want to do grocery shopping, avoid going during breakfast, lunch, or dinner rushes. If you're going for a meal, try to avoid periods of people doing their grocery shopping. Amazing homemade food/ their lechon kawali and lumpia are insanely good. I loved their palabok as well. They were really busy on Sunday at 12 but understandable They have some combo plates, made to order food, boba, ube treats and a Even a grocery. There is ample seating for small groups too. Pros: -The lumpia here is so good, better than other Filipino places that I have been. -They do a great job with chicken adobo every time I have been. -The prices here are reasonable. -They have a mini grocery store and food that you can order there made in house. Cons: -My biggest issue with here is that they do not always serve your food hot. The BBQ pork skewers that we got were COLD and tasted old, like they had been in the fridge for weeks. The pancit that we ordered was also cold. -I got an halo halo dessert here and it was just a solid piece of ice. I had to wait about 45 minutes until it had thawed out enough to eat. The ube ice cream that I got on top was very good though. -You have to remind them of your orders if it is a beverage. If they can make some improvements though I would eat here all the time. If you're looking for a legit restaurant to satisfy your Filipino food craving, I suggest checking out Manila Mart. Although it's somewhat of a drive from where I live, I've been to Manila Mart a good amount of times (even before their expansion). Must eat includes: bbq skewers (chicken or pork), Sriracha garlic eggplant with tofu, bistek (thinly sliced beef that's super tender and packed with flavor), lechon kawali (get a pound - you'll thank me later), and the sisig (I like mine extra crispy so I warm it up in the oven when I get home before eating). I like how they added some specialty drinks, bubble teas, and shakes to their menu. Although my cantaloupe juice didn't come with shave cantaloupe pieces like I'm used to, it was still refreshing. I've also tried their taro milk tea with boba, which hit the spot. While you're at Manila Mart, be sure to stock up on some Filipino baked goods and grocery items. Although the line to pay/order can reach the door a times, the line moves at an efficient pace. Service is always friendly and welcoming.
