Unlike Stewart and Hol, my wife's and my expectations going to Lulu's Gourmet on 13600 Baltimore Ave. in Laurel, Maryland were the same. And those expectations were high, with both of us being fans of pho and both of us having been frequent patrons of the Pho Saigon 54 restaurant that previously occupied Lulu's Gourmet's location. Lulu's servings for the pho, even for takeout orders, are gargantuan, the same size as the barrage of snowballs Stewart playfully launches at Hol before he realizes that she is not enjoying Earth's Christmas holiday season as much as he does. While a tad salty, Lulu's pho tastes great so long as one orders extra noodles to dilute the saltiness. Upon both visits, my wife was disappointed to learn that Lulu's Gourmet did not have any of the Hong Kong Waffles available to purchase that they prominently advertise. On our second visit, she was even more disappointed to not get the strawberry banana cream trang mieng that I attempted to order. I perhaps made a mistake in not getting a receipt to know if we were charged for the dessert and another mistake in showing the manager what we wanted to order on my phone rather than reading our takeout order out loud. Being an optimist like Stewart, I would give Lulu's Gourmet 3.5 stars if that were possible; but, for the purpose of current records, it will have to be a 3.

It was perfectly grilled with flavorful grilled onions. The P1 pho was yummy goodness with a hint of sweetness of the broth. The S4. Hue Spicy Lemon Grass Soup was good. My only complaint and the reason for my 4 star on the food was my spring rolls were not as fresh as they could be. They were wrapped in saran wrap which I expected but it was clear they were made quite a while before I ordered because they did not stay together. I also would have like to be asked if I wanted any hot sauce or hoisin to go with my Bun. I also want to add I had the 3 Topping choice - the only way to go!

The broth was rich and flavorful, the beef was tender, and it was easily my favorite of the two dishes we tried. We also had the hủ tiếu Nam Vang. It tasted good, but it was noticeably different from the traditional version we're used to. In particular, they used chicken where we would normally expect pork, which changed the character of the dish quite a bit. It wasn't bad, just not the more traditional version we were hoping for. Service was very good. The food came out quickly, and the staff checked on us several times without being intrusive. The restaurant itself is casual and no-frills, but clean and comfortable, and the overall value seemed reasonable. There was nothing particularly wrong with the meal, and the service was a definite positive. We just tend to prefer more traditional Vietnamese dishes, so I'm not sure An Loi would be our first choice when we're looking for Vietnamese food in the area.

The combination rolls here are hands-down some of the best I've had: perfectly wrapped, packed with fresh herbs and shrimp, and that peanut dipping sauce is addictive. And the pho -- rich, fragrant broth, generous portions, everything tastes fresh every single time. It's the kind of bowl that ruins other pho for you. I've eaten here more times than I can count over the years, and I'm genuinely going to miss this place once I'm gone. My only complaint, and it's a running one: the building owners need to fix the damn A/C. It's been an issue for a while and really is the one thing holding back an otherwise perfect spot. If you're in Crofton, do yourself a favor and get the combination rolls and pho before you do anything else on the menu. Going to miss this place.

Which is wild, because I know I've taken a bunch of food pics here that I've never posted... complete waste lol. We walked in and were seated immediately and ended up getting the second-to-last available booth. Most of the room was couples on lunch dates, plus a group of friends, and later a party of about 7 took over one of the tables. Noise level was mostly moderate, with a quick sprinkle of loud when that bigger group got going, but nothing crazy, still totally fine for a date or a relaxed lunch. My wife ordered the A2 (slices of eye of round steak, well-done flank, and soft tendon). I got the A6 (eye of round steak and soft tendon). The pho was good, the broth had a lot of flavor. I did order extra noodles because while I like the pho here, the portions are a little smaller compared to some other spots we go to. I loaded mine up with bean sprouts, tore up some basil, and let the jalapeños sit in the bowl for a bit for heat. Lately though, I've been more about the chili oil, which they'll bring out if you ask. We also got shrimp summer rolls, which are always a go-to for me when eating pho anywhere. These were fresh, great texture, and the basil really pops. The peanut sauce is one of the best parts. Honestly, I could come here just for the summer rolls and that sauce. I also grabbed a taro smoothie, lightly sweet and creamy, solid choice. Food came out fast, maybe 8 minutes after ordering. Service here is consistently good. The staff is friendly, not pushy at all, and they actually check in on you without hovering. You can always get someone's attention if you need something. They even let a couple move from a table to a booth once one opened up, which I thought was a nice touch. The place itself is very clean, the tables and floors are always well kept. I don't really remember music, but there was a TV on playing college basketball. Overall vibe is relaxed. Parking can be a little tight since it's tucked behind a Rita's and the layout is kind of awkward, but even when it's full you're not walking far, just a compact lot. Price-wise, our total was about $40, but that included an extra summer roll and an extra smoothie. Without the extras, it would've been under $30. My only real critique is portion size for the price, specifically with the pho. It's not a deal breaker, but it's why this isn't my go-to spot when I'm really hungry. I'm a big guy with a big appetite -- my wife would be fine eating here any day of the week. Would I come back? Yeah. The food is good and the service is solid. For me, this is more of a quick lunch spot or a stop when I'm on the move, rather than a full dinner destination. Consistent, reliable, and never a bad choice, just depends on how hungry you are.
