Did you all see the emergency services there on 9/21/2023? That was me. Yep, I needed to pick up a few things after a quick trip to cvs. I tied my dog up and went in to pick up some items. An older Asian man (store owner/manager?) approached me about my dog and an incident with a pregnant woman. She was by the front door excited speaking on the phone. In short, a pregnant woman claimed an incident with my dog, refused medical attention at the site, spoke enough English to call about 10 Latino males but not enough to call emergency services or 911 because she, and her male relatives, wanted me to transport her to the hospital. Let's unpack this. Anyways, after many excited utterances of her water breaking due to my dog, I called Arlington Police non emergency line and they sent fire truck, emts, animal control and police. I ended up calling as it didn't seem she, her male relatives or the helpful store owner/manager called and I observed a few emergency trucks driving past Pershing or near Glebe. As Arlington emergency services and police arrived, the older Asian man disappeared (along with his knowledge of the situation-- how convenient) into the ether as did most of the pregnant woman's male relatives who were there to support her and I assume, compel me into taking them all home so I could take the pregnant woman to the hospital. Also, something that seemed to evaporate and become ether was the pregnant woman's water that supposedly "broke" while I was there. Her legs, exposed just above the knee, were dry and ashy and not "slick"'or wet. Another special thing to note, the older Asian man (store owner/manager), the pregnant woman, and the pregnant woman's male family members mobile phones were not able to call 911 or emergency services. Initially, the store owner/manager, along with the woman and one of her male relatives attempted to compel me to give the pregnant woman cash on the spot. I refused to do this. So, the woman and her male relatives decided the best option was to follow me home to have me take her to the hospital from there and attempted to communicate this plan to me. Most of the male relatives showed up in trucks with some trucks having a one woman sitting inside. These male relatives could not transport her to the hospital either. I had my earbuds in and stayed in call so I was not alone. One of my relatives was convinced the store owner/manager was in on the "scam" to give the pregnant woman cash and believed he was probably receiving some type of cut or kickbacks (south Florida living does color one's perspective in interesting ways). Within 10 minutes of my call to the non-emergency line, the fire truck, emts, police and animal control arrived and took over. I do not know if the pregnant woman or her family members who did not disappear, asked the Arlington county police for me to personally take her to the hospital or to provide cash. I did observe her not allowing the emergency service to check her out. I asked the emts if they could take her to the hospital because I could not. I was told to wait for police and animal control. The fire truck and emts eventually left, as did animal control. I was told I could go. I am guessing this is not the outcome the pregnant woman, her male relatives, and quite possibly, the Glebe Market store owner or manager hoped for. Please keep in mind, there is also an older Asian female (another Glebe manager/owner -- maybe the wife or relative) that seems to like yelling at people as I observed her scurrying into Glebe market after yelling at me in CVS while I was talking to the pharmacist and picking up my prescription. Yep, she totally invaded my privacy. I thought she was homeless person that passionately cared for dogs as she was complaining that it was too hot outside for my dog (we do errands together). I double checked the weather, it said 78 F, and ignored her because I though she was having a spell. She followed me outside of CVS and by this time, is yelling and calling me awful names. I didn't say a word to her and walked around her like she wasn't there. As long as she didn't touch me, I wasn't calling the police. She loves dogs. Maybe a little too much. Of course, my dog would not let her pet him and I was still ignoring her as she had done and said awful things. I had no plans on encouraging him to allow her to hug him. I started walking the opposite way from home and observed her running into Glebe Market still yelling her awful stuff at me and running against traffic! I was very curious, changed direction and followed her inside. Of course, I did not find her. I was probably 2 minutes behind her because I had to secure my pup before going inside. This was in late spring on a Saturday morning of this year (2023). read more

Glebe market is my go to store for quality and reasonably-priced meat, produce, and spices. Yes, the owners are Korean and, yes, the staff speaks Spanish, so if that's a problem (as it seems to be for many reviewers, especially those that irresponsibly tie up their dogs while shopping), Harris Teeter is down the road. read more

Tonight I I bought two cup of noodles from the market. And when I got home to cook the cup of noodles there was a Maggitt on the plastic when I open up the cup of noodles. When I took it back to the store the manager says to me that I put a Maggitt on the plastic. But I bought that cuppa noodles from the store on tonight not even a couple hours ago. Stephon G. Am half Dominican and half Portuguese. So my Dominican side has needs. It took me a while to come in here cause usually there are lots of guys hanging out. But after reading the reviews, people said they were not a problem. It is a pretty decent little Latino market, but lots of things all people need for the fridge. I was impressed with veggies (Platanos!) chicken, and cheeses (not so Dominican a staple but really important to other Latin countries). You got your canned items, rice, beans, etc I have often noticed that Latino stores sometimes sell some Goya products higher than Walmart but these were good prices. The sodas have some Latino favorites, but highway robbery for Pepsi prices, you want popular soft drinks go to a super market. You can buy your saint candles. (Hey they work!). So I was really happy find this place and getting in and out was so fast, if I need milk or eggs am coming here and not Harris Teeter for sheer ease. read more

The place looks dirty and unmopped. The clerks understand Spanish but snub you if you speak English to them. They rarely tell you the purchase price, as, unless they're speaking Spanish, the clerks are uncommunicative. The Asian owner and his wife are rude if they have to come out of the office. read more

When taco night comes calling, Glebe Market is the place to go for the necessities. There's a wide array of meats. Six different kinds of chorizo already packaged (two pounds of Mexican hot was quickly scarfed up) with one or two also being available behind the butcher counter. There wasn't any boneless/skinless chicken. Veggies were all a good price. Cilantro bunches were twice the size of the regular grocery store and only 88 cents. Lemons were 3/$1. Avocados were ripe and just $1 a piece. Most of the veggies were quite fresh. There were about 50 different kinds of cheese. Maybe more. Pre-shredded, pre-crumbled, whole; they've got it. Queso blanco for pupusas and queso fresco for the tacos worked out well. I was hoping they'd sell homemade tortillas. There are a lot of home/locally made breads but I didn't see any tortillas. Seriously, you can't go wrong with a supermercado that sells six different kinds of chorizo. This is a place I will definitely recommend to any Arlingtonian who has a hankering for making tacos at home. read more

Almost everything you might want in a market, latino style. If you are on the hunt for skirt steak for under $2, this is the place. I also like buying shrimp for under $5. Then I rush home and cook them up with chili, garlic and butta! The aisles are narrow and tall, stocked, yeah, bursting, with cookies, queso fresco, pigs feet, etc. etc. And there's a butcher in the back. The check out ladies are not sullen, a plus in my book. And you don't have to speak Spanish to shop here, although I guess you could practice if you wanted to. I rarely spend more than $40 here. Sweet reasonable prices! Just what a neighborhood market should be. And before shopping here, go eat, and get inspired, at El Paso cafe right next door. read more

***3.5 stars*** Utterly bored this morning, I remembered Mikkela's review of this place and realized that there's no way I can turn down $2 skirt steak. I'd say that it's more like a regular market with a Latin bent as opposed to a truly Latino grocery. Having said that, there's all sorts of Central and South American goodies, like chorizo (three kinds, Salvadorean, Guatemalan and Mexican), beef tripe (stomach), heart, kidneys, tongue... pretty much every part of the cow 99.9% of my friends find disgusting and pretty much every part I drool over :) The skirt steak was an incredible value... three huge slices for a little over $5. Tastewise, it didn't bowl me over, even after seasoning it. Frankly, Giant cuts a better skirt steak, but if you're making fajitas or want something to fill a pita, you really can't go wrong. Just be sure to marinate it in some wine or beer ahead of time. The beer selection was a little disappointing. I figured for a store that's in a predominantly Hispanic neighborhood, they'd have a jam-packed selection of the hard-to-find Latin beers that I crave. Nope... aside from Corona and Sol, it's pretty much your American pisswater headquarters. If you know any Lou Dobbs (ugh!) groupies who think immigrants don't want to assimilate, have 'em check out Glebe Market's beer selection so you can officially call bullsh*t on 'em :) The verdict: I can see myself stopping in from time to time, but if you're looking for a true Latino grocery store, you're much better off with El Chaparral in Arlington. For one thing, they have an actual butcher counter on premises, and they offer a wide selection of Central/South American beers and wines. Having said that, I think I'll be coming back here next Saturday for a beef heart the size of a football... for $5, it's the perfect way to test out this sweet and sour beef heart recipe I found! read more

Not sure why it took me this long to check out Glebe Market, especially considering one of my nearest and dearest lives right across the street. But, really glad I did. The place is pretty small--not where I'd go if I were getting a full cart of groceries for the week. However, there's some choice finds and it's open til 11pm every night, so that's pretty handy. It's a store with a pronounced Hispanic/Latin foods slant so when I need cheap cinnamon and spices, I can pop over here instead of to Grand Mart. The produce is usually in pretty good shape, though it's a small selection. Limes were only six for $1 this week (06/24/10), cilantro two bunches for $1, and zucchini, eggplant, and green beans were less than what I'd pay at Safeway. The best thing was the $1.19 cans of coconut milk. No longer will I be giving Harris Teeter $3 for the same exact thing when I want to make a curry. Rejoice! read more

Cheap groceries: fresh produce, fresh cuts of meat! I can find just about every thing here and for so cheap! I love this place. It's a little shady with lots of people standing around outside, but not dangerous. Definitely better than Harris Teeter and Whole Foods for your basic necessities! read more

I go to Glebe Market regularly for perishable items I know I'm going to use within one or two days. It is a largely Latin@ market -- many of the foods are less common in your typical American supermarket and a lot of the signage and labels are in Spanish. If you're looking for spices and don't know Spanish, I recommend having a Spanish-English dictionary or smart phone on you. Otherwise, you'll probably end up buying the McCormick spices which are far more expensive than what they stock in packets with Spanish labels. That said, most of the "American" food (cereals, pop tarts, various beers, ice cream, etc.) tend to be much more expensive than other items. However, the produce tends to be pretty inexpensive. It seems like Glebe might get day-old leftovers from the Harris Teeter down the street, as the produce is packaged exactly the same and tends to go bad within two or three days. It's worth the price if you're planning on using the food within a day or so. Meat prices and quality are so-so, but there's always a wide variety. You can get anything from hearts, to chicken feet, to pork chops. It's a very small store with narrow aisles, making it sometimes difficult to manage a cart and the people around you. Cashiers are so-so. They're often inattentive (wrong change, talking with other employees at other registers while checking out your food), but that's the worst of it. The parking lot is super tiny and I'm not sure if the other businesses around allow Glebe Market customers to park in their lots. I always walk there, so it's not an issue for me, but I've never seen the lot empty. read more

Since moving to the Ballston neighborhood Glebe Market is my new go to store for meat, eggs, and produce. The prices are so reasonable and cheaper than other grocery stores like the Harris Teeter nearby. The meat and produce is fresh and packed in small quantities. They carry lard, chorizo, and many spices that you otherwise would likely not find in a chain grocery store. Also, there is ample parking and plenty of shopping carts in the store. The staff is friendly and helpful and the store is clean. One couldn't ask for a better local grocery store. read more

Really cheap meat and reasonably priced produce is about all you can ask for from a little grocery store this size. As far as ethnic stuff goes, It's not going to replace your need for H-Mart, but there are some specialty items that are a whole lot cheaper here than at a regular grocery store, so it's worth a stop in. read more

The prices here can be much cheaper than the Harris Teeter that is 2 blocks away. I come here to pick up basic items such as eggs, rice and meat. The meat in the back is fresh, and they offer some great cuts on fish. The Latino ingredients are what draws me to this place. I can find so many more spices here and a fraction of the cost in other grocery stores. Plus they have corn flour and corn husks for any tamale needs. The produce looks fresh, but have seen some limp vegetables. The only thing I do not like is the price of cheese. It is much higher than that of Harris Teeter. I do prefer this grocery store over others since it is super close, and it better fits my taste in food. read more

I shop here almost exclusively to buy my meats and fish- great prices and fresh meat! I also buy plantains here (both green and ripe) as they have the best price on both per pound and some other vegetables. I rarely buy frozen foods, but occasionally I forget to get something from Harris Teeter or Aldi and pick up something else here from the refrigerated or pantry item sections. Overall I really like this store and it's one of my weekly stops for fresh meat. read more

This is my go to place during work when I need to stop by and get some groceries. This place has the best selection of fresh fruits, veggies and meats. They also have a great selection of latin american products. Its kind of in a shady location but no one really bugs you. They also have a flyer that they put out every week. read more

Mold on every pack of quenepa (Spanish lime) in the produce section. Que asco! I'd hate to be sick eating this stuff. The non-perishable items look great! Many memories. The meat "looked" ok, but I cant trust it. Probably won't be back. I'll go to Aldi. read more

The Glebe Market should make the store and the store entry/exit to were it can be acessable for wheelchairs & scooters the store has no ramp for people who are stuck on wheelchairs & scooters too and who would might also want to buy products from the store. read more

This is an independent grocery store that caters to a mostly Latino clientele. It has some specialty ingredients like flor de Jamaica, tamarinds, etc. The produce is inexpensive and fresh. It's a good alternative to the same-old, same-old grocery stores, although it is small and doesn't have the variety you can find at larger stores. read more
