It was cold outside. It is Virginia in the winter, after all. Not knowing the area, I was without a clue as to what was open and where, to find toiletries that TSA had tossed aside like a used orange peel. 11:32 PM. It's late. Is there anything other than bars open in this area? I didn't know. Suddenly, I saw the neon lights like a beacon in the dark. "Open 24 hours." Yes, the search was over. I ran across the street, past the Metro station and waved to a driver that let me cross in the road. It is really cold at this time of night; I'm just happy there is no snow on the ground to cause me to slip. The lights aren't too bright and surprisingly, people are shopping. There isn't a lone person in there; it's busy. I whisk past the displays of nuts and chocolate. In front of me is a much bigger display of wine than I anticipated. The prices aren't bad at all. "2/$10." It's mix and match deal. I picked up a bottle of Barefoot's moscato and a white zinfandel, remembering that white zinfandel was the only wine I enjoyed at a winery in Mexico two days prior. I walked through the aisles, unsure of what else to purchase. I settle on gum. You can never have too much gum. Headed to the checkout counter with my items, I noticed that nobody's at the register. CVS has a bizarre set-up. The cashier stands in front of the self-check kiosks to help patrons. Making eye-contact with the cashier she hurriedly shuffled behind the counter and rang me up. With her tight braids and easy smile, she seemed nice. I consistently feel the need to explain myself when there is a silence. I told the cashier I live in Vegas and wondered what good restaurants were around the area. She looked surprised. Everybody looks surprised when you say you live in Vegas. It's really not that special. The cashier recommended a restaurant across the street from where I stayed and I left. Back into the cold. Thank God it's not windy. Throughout the course of my work trip, 1/13-16/12, I visited another couple of times to pick up other items. Looking for the perfect thank-you card is better left to browsing another store; the selection is lacking at this particular CVS. Overall, the store was decent, but nothing spectacular.

Really? Locks on gallon sized Gain and Tide.

Best to call ahead if you ever need something from the pharmacy. Often out of stock of common medications.

Very grateful for Tiara, pharmacist, for taking the time to contact a nearby location in search of my medication.

Update: I don't use the pharmacy anymore, but generally the staff at this location seems to be much better the last couple years.

I love that this place opens late. I ran out of an ingredient mid-recipe, and then literally Google searched 'Asian grocery' that 'opens late' and this popped up in my feed. Thank the heavens! Took a gamble since I don't live in the River Place apartment complex, where this store is located. Just find street parking after hours and you're golden! (Prob not ideal to go during rush hour when this area gets busy). In the grocery section, they sell rice cakes, a small set of veggies/produce (cabbage, green onion, garlic, ginger, carrots, limes), kimchi and different refrigerated Korean noodles at an affordable price! What a hidden gem! You can also get standard sundries, sauces (some fancy soy sauces!), sports drinks, ice cream and things like dog food, toiletries. It seems like they know their audience - all the young professionals who live in the area. The American sundries tend to be pricier. The cashier was super friendly and said hi to her regulars. She also helped me find what I was looking for, and offered some quick cooking tips. Loved her warmth and hospitality!

Some food was on my mind, but after walking into the nice clean store, I was stopped by the smell of hotdogs. A very popular item sold here long before the other types of hot foods were sold at 7 Eleven. This was before 7 Eleven had it's own brand drinks or foods. Anyhow, the quarter pound hotdog (non-spicy) is what I went for. I saw the tongs used for grabbing hot foods but did not touch them. After seeing how dirty the bind where the tongs go at another 7 Eleven, I could not use those tongs. I saw no disposable gloves to use, so I finally asked for some napkins from the cashier. Grabbing only the hotdog I wanted after setting up the hotdog bun and its holder, the hotdog was perfect. Adding onions to the hotdog came to mind, but I saw this area was heavily used. Maybe next time. I like this store, but the parking space is very limited. It was no surprise I saw a panhandlers waiting outside for just the right person to ask for something. It happen once I walked outside, the store. The panhandle asked someone for something and he must have gotten it, because he vanished right after getting it. Nevertheless, I will be back to this store and area. I saw some other places I would like to visit.
