My last review, on our 2nd visit to Harper's Table was with some reservations as our service was poor, and my meal was lackluster to say the most. However, we've been two more times since then and on each visit, especially the former of the two, everything has been top notch.
On the earlier of our two most recent visits, they unfortunately ran out of the Crab Claw appetizer, and my wife wanted to try the Crab Cake but was concerned becuase she doesn't like Panko fried cakes. We were told HT Crab Cakes do use Panko, but in the filler rather than as a dusting to fry them in. She ordered the Soft Shell Crab Taco instead (which BTW is ridiculously phenomenal, and at only $10.00 a great inexpensive meal choice here - quite satisfying). What happened? They brought her out a Crab Cake to try! We did, and it was PERFECT. I'm coming back to this, so hold on.
On that visit, I had a Lamb dish which consisted of three cuts, positioned on the plate beautifully, over an Eggplant puree, with Pistachios and Currants.
BEST THING I'VE EVER EATEN out at a restaurant. Bar none. I really, really, sat there trying to remember if I've ever had anything that good, anywhere. I could think of a few things that were in that league, but this was, really, the BEST thing I've ever had, ANYWHERE.
On our most recent visit I got the Crab Cakes based on our previous tasting. Now, I know some folks don't like a "lot of filler" in their Cakes, and some people like that 'pile of crabmeat" a la Surfrider. Personally, I think a Crab CAKE should be a "cake" and held together with some binder at least - which means some filler (and flavoring) is necessary.
HT Crab Cakes are my idea of what a PERFECT Crab Cake should be. I might season it a little differently, or add different veggies in with the filler (which includes Panko but you wouldn't know it) but that's a simple variation rather than a different construction method. They really are some of the best I've had outside of making them myself. Two of them were on the plate and were more than filling enough.
I also had a "Cornbread Puddin" with Smoked Duck appetizer (nice to see some game on the menu as previously it had been Chicken, Pork, Beef, and Seafood). The Duck was stupendous and a perfect compliment for the Cornbread Puddin - seems like an odd combination I know but it really worked.
We found out on this visit that many of the condiments are actually made in-house - I tried the Hot Sauce served on the table, thinking it was some Texas Pete or something. Wrong. Home-made, aged, pepper mash with just enough heat and incredible flavor of the peppers (which is what I think a hot sauce should do - not cover up flavor with heat). I really can't wait to go back and order something just so I can put this Hot Sauce on it! I've heard they made Hot Wings for the Superbowl last year, so...
At any rate, there is no question in my mind now that HT represents the most superior dining experience (without being stuffy) in Suffolk, and maybe even in the region, aside from a few really top notch restaurants with which HT is definitively in the same league. OK, yes, anywhere you can get an off night, or make a poor menu choice yourself, or a server can be out of sorts (though really, the absolute best shouldn't have those issues but this is not LA or NY) but I'm going to say, just go. You won't be sorry. And I'm sure they'll fix it if you do have any issues while dining read more
