I enjoyed my experience at Harper's Table from start to finish and must share.
We had a party of 7 initially but my husband was ill and some other friends cancelled so our party of 7 became 4. We had an 8:45 pm reservation but arrived around 9 pm.
The decor reminds me of bistro's in NYC with exposed brick, natural wood seating, pedants lights and exposed HVAC duct work, which I like. Christina was our waitress and was so friendly and very knowledgeable about the menu.
We had a table set for 8 (originally reserved for 7) and we were able to spread out which we needed since we ordered a little of everything on the menu. There is a full bar and they can make nearly anything (no Mojito's, no mint). We tried the Nogg (homemade egg nog), a pineapple upside down martini and a blood orange martini (Tito's martini) as well as my usual vodka tonic. All were excellent as were the prices which I find on par with other restaurants I visit in Hampton Roads and certainly much cheaper than NYC drink prices.
For appetizers we tried the cauliflower soup, pork belly sweet potato biscuits, Caesar salad and foie gras in a jar. It was basically family style since we all wanted to try a bit of each item. I had checked out the menu online when I found out where we were going but I did not look for photos. I was pleasantly surprised to see the pork belly biscuits. They are tiny bites of well portioned goodness! We ended up getting a plate full of additional sweet potato biscuits (Thanks Harper) since it was the end of the night and we were the last table. I am not a fan of cauliflower but the cauliflower soup was just amazing, so creamy and smooth. The foie gras, served with Gina bread (raisin bread made by Gina) was a great blend of sweet and salty.
Harper came out to see how we were enjoying our meal and of course brought out more tasty sweet potato biscuits!
For entrees I ordered the shrimp and grits and the rest of the family ordered ribeye steaks (2) and the burger with bacon. Although I did not try the steaks or burger, I was told they were excellent. I really enjoyed my shrimp and grits, the perfect blend of spice (andouille sausage & tobasco) with creamy grits, almost like potatoes. We also had fries, mushrooms, brussels sprouts and spinach again, all wonderful. The spinach was spicy but not hot which I think is because of the fresh chiles. The brussels sprouts were cooked with guanciale, much better than my brussels sprouts cooked with regular bacon. Now I am on the hunt for guanciale after asking Christina about it at least three times. I did not try the fries or mushrooms but heard they were excellent.
We had no room for dessert (I ate my leftover shrimp & grits for lunch the next day) but my cousin did order a cornbread pudding to go. I did not get to try it but cannot imagine that it was anything less than fabulous since everything else was wonderful. Christina was kind enough to write heating directions for the cornbread pudding on the container along with writing the name of the items on all of the to go boxes.
A special treat was Randy (cook I think) stopping by to let my aunt know that she reminded him of a close family member that passed away. She does have a wonderful spirit and loves to meet new people. By the end of the night they were like old friends.
Everything was cooked to perfection and the total bill was $70 per person including 20% tip, which did include alcoholic beverages. I think that is completely reasonable for such a wonderful meal and full dining experience. I think it would have been closer to $60 without alcohol.
If you have the chance to visit Suffolk, do make a point to visit Harper's Table! I traveled from Virginia Beach and would go again in a heartbeat. I have already told my foodie friends and family members to make a visit. read more
