Both of the Happy Day Cafe are HK style cafe. I like the breakfast and lunch better in Vancouver but dinner at Richmond. Even the twins are not 100 % the same. They must have some different from their personality etc. I have no clue why l have such impression. Anyhow, luckily I don't have negative feelings They close at 10:00 pm. We were there a few times for our late dinner! I found groups of customers who enjoyed their Happy hour menu. I should try their Happy Hour to find out the goody's in their menu

I've come here several times with my family and friends. They have plenty of seating and the staff are pretty attentive. It's usually pretty lively throughout the day. They have different menus for lunch and late night compared to regular dinner/breakfast. More importantly the food is delicious and large portions which are great for sharing. We always get a variation of the baked rice and a pork chop which is always delicious.

A5 Morning Special with two eggs and crispy top bun (bolo bao) and fresh butter with HK style coffee

Early breakfast at Happy Day Cafe in Richmond, enjoying A5 Morning Special with two eggs and crispy top bun (bolo bao) and fresh butter & Congee combo steam plain rice roll. Both come with a hot drink; we chose HK milk tea and HK style coffee. It was bumping busy at 10am but we were quickly seated upon entering the restaurant. I do like the contemporary decor as table and booth/chair are in good condition and the lights are bright with high ceilings. It's not my first time dining at Happy Day Cafe and every time the cafe is clean and bright. The service is always friendly and quick (never feel rushed).

We came around 9pm on a Wednesday and noticed that people kept piling in. They have a late night menu which is the same as the lunch menu that we were excited to try after a workout class. The first thing I noticed was how spacious, clean and nice the restaurant was, which I didn't expect for the area. We ordered the baked rice Portuguese style with beef (18.95) which was delicious. We saw other tables order noodles and fried rice which looked like huge portions. Great for sharing. Would come back again!

Lovely place for both take out as well as dine-in. I recently ordered the Egg Tofu with Enoki mushrooms. Good portion and still warm when I received it. Generally speaking, the dine-in solo and group dining service is great. It's advised to pre-book any group dining especially on weekends!

Happy Day is consistent. I do like the flavours of BBY location more than the new location in Richmond. Recently went in for a prompt lunch and the flavours and portion were excellent. Had the baked pork chop ice and Seafood rice combo, both sauces were very nice, rice was al dente and well seasoned. Milk tea was smooth and no tannin residual bitterness. Real nice to see grandmas out with their girlfriends in booths too, really cute! Serivce was prompt and street parking was readily available.

There was a lot of rice but not enough meat and vegetables to go with the rice.

I came here with two 90+ years old seniors on a weekday late afternoon. There was no parking on Kingsway, but I was able to find parking on the side street and it wasn't too far for the seniors to walk. The tricky part is a rather short but steep slope to enter the front door, it wasn't easy for the seniors to maneuver. We arrived just before 5 p.m. but were only given the dinner menu. Afternoon tea time should go till 5:30 p.m., but we weren't told we could have asked for the cheaper menu.  We ordered Chicken & Vegetable on Rice and Fried Vermicelli with BBQ Duck Meat & Cilantro. The dishes looked big when they arrived, but I was disappointed after taking a closer look, The portions were big but they were all rice and vermicelli, so the value for money was really terrible. There were not enough chicken and vegetables to finish the rice. The same is true for the vermicelli, the duck meat was shredded and so in reality we were not getting much meat. There was also not enough cilantro to make the dish fragrant.  However, I would still give a higher rating if the food were good. The taste of the food was decent, it did not taste too salty or greasy. However, half way through the meal, I felt funny in my stomach and the discomfort continued the rest of the night. I had heartburn and reflux the rest of the evening, this has not happened to me before and I think it is directly related to the food (or more precisely, something being added to the food like MSG).

Sticky chicken wrap. $9.85 for three. Stale. Freezer burnt.

My first time trying this place. I ordered through UberEats, so I cannot comment on the ambiance of the restaurant or the service of the staff. I ordered three items. One order of 3-pieces of sticky chicken rice wrap. One order of 4-pieces of steamed pork dumplings. One combo order of Shanghai noodles, gyoza and a drink. Sub-totalling $49.65. I went through with the order because of a promo offer. When receiving the order I was shocked to see the super small portions and half of the food was stale and freezer burnt. Totally not a good first impression!!

....was driving by and needed to stuff my face with lunch... ....parking was easy to find...was seated quickly at the bench area.... ....business was brisk as it was the lunch crowd... ...ordered the Hainan chicken rice combo with hot milk tea...also ordered baked seafood pork chop on fried rice... ....for some reason the first chicken piece was overly salty but the rest was great....rice was flavorful with bits of coconut... ....the baked dish was also well done....crispy pork with soft and well seasoned seafood.... ....this restaurant seems to be consistent with its service and food... ...easy to recommend....

I totally missed HK cafe food so we went here. This place was busy packed of customers when we went around 1PM. Variety of food on the menu including noodle combo. I ordered iced tea ($1.75), baked pork chop and seafood ($19.50) and salted pepper fried squid ($12.95). Everything was pretty good just that portion was small for 2 people. I felt there could be more amount of food for that price tag. **Cash and debit are accepted.**

Satay Noodles was a miss , tasted very bland - The egg was way to runny - like it was on the pan for 15 seconds and lifted out , I could not lift this off the plate if my life depended on it - Chicken steak was decent , but nothing to write home about - Pineapple bun is probably ordered from another vendor - and not sure how long ago - cause this one was beyond dry ... 2 stars because I've had better experiences with the lunch menu -

This little gem is prolly the best Hong Kong cafe in all of Americas. I have tried every single Hong Kong cafe under the San Gabriel Valley, and none has come close to Happy day cafe. We ordered a few dishes, and a couple dishes are noteworthy to mention. Toasted pineapple buns with butter, spam and egg is the best meal one could have as brunch and dessert coz Not many dishes could withstanding both salty and sweet at the same time. Baked porkchop with fried rice is another must order dish, they may seems very ordinary, but this dish authenticate what is a good Hong Kong Cafe. Inorder to run an authentic Hong Kong Cafe, one must master this dish to perfection. Hong Kong style milktea is another local favorite in Hong Kong, tho only simply mixing the two together, one has created a special drink, then with added technique and secret ingredients to prepare the Milk Tea, the result can be extradinary. https://www.instagram.com/p/CWhoNltLpMD/?utm_medium=copy_link

    Pineapple bun sandwich
    Allen W.

A solid Hong Kong bistro restaurant offering a long menu of sandwiches, noodles, congee, and baked rice dishes. I've been here several times and had good food each time. Service is prompt and efficient. Each time I've been here are mid-day and there's a short wait. Today at 11:30am on a Saturday we waited only 10 minutes. The tables are mostly separated from one another with a pane of glass. Good for small groups/families. I believe they have a breakfast menu before 11:30am but we just missed the cutoff (but saw some of the breakfast foods on other tables -- it looked good!). The pineapple bun sandwiches are worth a try as is the fried noodle chow mein (so crispy). The baked pork chop was also quite tasty - thick juicy pork and fried rice with tomato/ketchup topping.

    Dinner!!

A Gastronomic Awakening in Chinatown! You don't truly know…read moreuntil you go--and now that I've been, I'm haunted. As I write this, I am literally still dreaming of the Hong Kong Style BBQ Pork. It didn't just "eat" well; it dissolved into a decadent, sweet, fatty puddle of pure bliss. Walking in, the vibe is quintessential Chinatown: a bustling counter, a glass case showcasing glistening roasted treasures, and a seating area that trades fancy decor for pure, functional authenticity. We were clearly out of our element, probably looking like deer in headlights, but the staff met our confusion with warm smiles. Then came Bobby--the absolute heart and soul of this place. We walked in expecting the standard American-Chinese routine, but Bobby whisked us away to a cozy table and treated us like family. He started us off with a fragrant jasmine tea so naturally sweet and floral it didn't need a grain of sugar--perfect for a biting winter night. While we flirted with the Happy Hour menu, Bobby took the reins. You don't say no to a man with that much charisma and passion! On his expert recommendation, we pivoted to the Two-Meat Combo (BBQ Pork + Soy Chicken) with a side of their famous Roast Duck. The food arrived in a lightning-fast 10 minutes, but the real treat was Bobby's play-by-play on how each dish was prepared. You can taste the pride in every bite. The balance was masterclass: a symphony of sweet, salty, and umami. The meats were succulent, the skins were shattery-crisp, and the glazes were perfectly sticky. The undisputed heavyweight champion, however, was that Hong Kong BBQ Pork. Imagine the best "burnt ends" of your life, drenched in a caramelized, mouth-watering sauce that demands your full attention. We left Chinatown BBQ feeling more than just sated--we felt enlightened. If you're looking for a "one in a million" meal, let Bobby order for you. You won't regret it.

After the closure of Floata earlier this month, this is the last one standing. Even though this area is "historic", it's historic in name, history, and remaining buildings only. Economic reality will catch up eventally and this area will become unrecognizable in the forseable future. Social commentary aside, I came here for a reason. I wanted to eat dim sum in Chinatown one last time. I've eaten at Floata, and a whole bunch of other restaurants of Chinatown past. I had to do this one. The food was exactly as I expected. Nothing fancy, but solid Cantonese dim sum from a generation ago. It's old school dim sum, prepared by a bunch of old school folks chattering away in Cantonese while they work the tables and back kitchen. Items ordered: Prawn spring rolls Dried scallop and egg white fried rice Deep fried garlic wings XLB Steamed black bean ribs. The service is what it is, for Chinese standards, that is. Not intrusive, not terribly friendly, but efficient. The ambiance has certainly changed. We were the only Chinese people in the restaurant the time I came in. If I were to make a wild guess, everyone in here were tourists, with the exception of one lady, who was a regular. The PSA: This restaurant will likely not be around long in all honesty. If you want to have dim sum in Chinatown, you'd better make an effort to come here. Keep your expectations in check.

Once we sat down and were handed the full menu, though, I had a brief moment of panic. The menu is huuuge and varied, plus none of the items I had mentally planned on ordering were on there. We pivoted and ordered pork siu mai, congee, look fun noodles, and a few steamed buns (they're especially known for those). The congee, noodles, and siu mai were all fine--very standard, not particularly memorable. In fairness, they weren't what I came for in the first place, so that probably shaped my expectations. The real standouts were the pork asado siopao and the chicken deluxe (bola bola). Both have Filipino roots, and the siopao especially brought a comforting sense of familiarity--soft, fluffy, and filled with that sweet-savory pork that felt like home. Those alone made the visit worthwhile. They actually have quite a few other Filipino influenced items like hopia and puto which was surprising. Ironically, it was only after we left that I noticed the sign on the window highlighting their most popular items--exactly what first-timers should probably stick to. I had ordered a few pastries to go with the intention of trying them later... and then completely forgot about them, which I'm still a little sad about. Overall, it was a good visit with a clear lesson learned: go in with a game plan and order the hits. It's a beloved Vancouver institution for a reason, and I'd definitely recommend stopping by--just know it's cash only and do a little pre-order research so you can make the most of it. I'd give it more like a 3.5 vs a 4 star, but I'm already planning a redo focused purely on the classics.

Usual table service was in place. Took our order and food came out at acceptable pace. When we were done, they politely boxed up the leftovers and we paid our bill. So service was on point. The food we ordered came out hot. The staples that I order to test was hargow, suimai and pai gwut(spareribs). All 3 dishes in general were good.....the hargow could have used an extra minute or 2 in the steamer. The suimai was very good. I tasted every ingredient in this dish. Usually it is just a complete mix and you can't discern the different flavors. They tried something different with the cheongfun by adding pieces of Chinese donut to the roll. I personally think it didn't add much to the dish, taste or texture wise. I did like the pea shoots with shrimp. I think it is a good combo. All in all a good dimsum. On a typical Sunday evening, the restaurant is usually fully occupied, but my friend had thoughtfully made a reservation a week in advance, so our table for five was ready upon arrival. As always, the restaurant was clean and well maintained, with good airflow thanks to the wide-open front entrance facing the parkade. The front desk receptionist greeted us cordially, and we were escorted to a cozy table in a comfortable location -- not too close to the washrooms, which I appreciated. Our meal began with the Kirin Special Assorted Cold Appetizer, followed by Crab Meat, Dried Scallops, and Fish Maw Soup. The soup arrived piping hot and was delicious, with a generous portion that could easily have served eight people. We also enjoyed Pea Tips Braised with Bean Curd and Assorted Mushrooms in Consommé, Marinated Free-Range Crispy Skin Chicken, Fillet of Cod Sautéed with Seasonal Vegetables, and Live Crab in Consommé with Ginger and Green Onion, served with E-fu Noodles. Overall, the quality and taste of every entrée were excellent. Service was top-notch -- tea and hot water were refilled constantly, bones and used plates were replaced promptly, and the servers were friendly and engaging throughout the evening. My friend and his family have apparently been regulars at this location for over two decades, which likely contributed to the exceptional attentiveness we received. However, one aspect of the experience genuinely disturbed me. All servers, including the captains, continued to wear masks at all times. While this practice was understandable two years ago, now -- five years after the onset of the pandemic, with COVID-19 managed similarly to other seasonal respiratory illnesses -- the continued universal masking in a fine-dining environment feels unnecessary and detracts from the overall guest experience. Fine dining, in my view as an avid foodie, is built on human connection, hospitality, and personal interaction. Masks create a more impersonal, almost clinical atmosphere. In a well-ventilated space like this, the environmental risk does not seem to justify the visual and social trade-off. Rather than providing reassurance, the persistent masking may unintentionally signal that the environment is unsafe or that management is out of step with current provincial health guidelines, where masking is now a personal choice rather than a mandate. Final verdict: Food & Service: 5/5 Ambience: 2/5 Overall: 3/5 -- as the current aesthetic feels more like a relic of 2020 than a leader in 2026 hospitality.
