German style pork knuckle ( it's huge!!)
Patricia F.

Nice casual Hong Kong style cafe in Richmond. My parents absolutely love the German Style Pork Knuckle and it's well priced too. It's on the dinner menu but you can get it at lunch. It's huge! I'm a fan of the baked seafood truffle cream sauce fried rice. Their red bean iced drink is pretty good too. You must try the fried fish skin with salted egg yolk! The duck breast in port sauce is good. Very large portion. Service is good and food is consistent :)

Another restaurant that escaped my Review radar, as I had been dining here way before my Yelping days... This is a very established Hong Kong Style Cafe in the City of Richmond, they are famous for their German Style Crispy Skinned Ham Hock ( Schweinshaxe ), and for every Wednesday it is on special for $17.95 ( comes with Garlic Toast, Soup of your choice, Main dish, drink ). I find that their Schweinshaxe here to be very moist, more so then most places I had been to, also the skin is really crispy and not greasy. So even after finishing the who piece of meat you don't have that heavy feeling! Tip: try asking for Black Pepper Sauce instead of the regular sauce, I find that it heightens the whole flavour scale! Today we also had the Fillet of Sole with Mushroom Cheese Sauce, with a generous portion of Sole ( not Bassa Fillet ), the fish has a very nice texture and also very flavourful, the creamy mushroom cheese sauce compliments well with the fish. We also request to have a side of their famous Black Pepper Sauce to accompany the steamed rice & vegetables. This is on their daily lunch special menu and it is only for $13.95 ( you also get Soup, Garlic Toast, Main dish, drink, add $1.00 for cold drink ). I also noticed that they have added more Asian & Chinese dishes to accommodate the ever demanding taste of the customers! Service is the no nonsense type, very fast, if you are in town and need to have lunch in a limited time, this will be a great place for you!

Red Bud (post 2018) Why post 2018? For years, this was the go to HK cafe in Richmond for me. Yes, iCafe was always around, but being that it's much further away for us, this place was it. Always consistent, never sub par; the old Red Bud was a solid 4 star, HK style cafe that was convenient (even accepted debit. 4.25 star, 8.8/10 for years, the main knock being that the menu focused so much on lobster and steak meals to the detriment of their Catonese selection... Western HK cafe stuff was good, but not enough Canto dishes) Then about a year ago they closed for renovations, and upon reopening? All new staff, ownership, and management. And despite leaving the Interac sign in front, argued with me that they were now cash only. I was unimpressed, so hadn't been back in a year. If you're curious, the entire staff of the old Red Bud ended up opening another HK cafe calles "Hong Kong Flavour Restauarant" and it's pretty much as good as it was before, but now much farther away. The first visit at "New Red Bud" after the ownership Change, the food was nearly identical despite the complete staff change, except the borscht was less flavourful,  thinner. Well, a year on? The borscht is even weaker now; for all intents and purposes it's vegetable soup, with a *lot* of large potato chunks. Not bad per se, but not authentic HK style borscht. 3.25-3.5  stars. Fortunately, the nice accompanying garlic toast remains unchanged. Then my mix and match grill arrived (chicken steak, deep fried pork chop). The cook on both meats was almost *perfect*, and the quality of both meats was high (but not gristle/fat free -- fortunately, there was very little). Almost: the last 2 bites of chicken had a little unrendered fat under the skin; not enough to significantly lower the score though. The fries are the same as iCafe (and Costco); the deliciously double-fried variety. The black pepper sauce is very good, if lacking a little kick. 4.5 stars. And the iced tea is delicious. Exactly what I crave when I'm in Hong Kong, and what I lament not being able to find any of in Japan (no seriously, I go into HK iced tea withdrawls there). Do I miss the old Red Bud? The "Cheers" of HK style cafes, where everyone did know your name: the low prices, pretty high quality, central location and convenience of debit brought many repeat customers. The staff used to know my name, but so did many of the patrons: friends of my parents who had watched me grow up, local customers who are used to seeing me around town for decades. I do miss that, and walked in here fully expecting to write a less positive review, but I can't. Even the service is pretty good, even if they don't know my name. Oh, and although they scratched out the Interac sign in front, they've gone back to accepting debit. Still pretty good, even if the soup isn't 8.7/10, 4.25 stars

Steak and eggs for breakfast
Eric C.

I'm a huge fan of breakfast. I'm 50% eggs Benedict on long weekends. But I have a special love for HK-style breakfasts. When you can have steak for breakfast, wouldn't you switch allegiances too? This morning, I came with my mom for a Sunday breakfast when the dim sum place next door was full. We got the morning special with steak, eggs, toast, fruit, and a drink. My mom upgrades get toast to French toast. The steak was a nice portion with great grill marks and tender. My scrambled eggs were decent, but a bit oily. My mom's French toast was delicious. For a quick, classic HK-style breakfast, this place fits the bill. Not mind-blowingly delicious, but it does the job. Parking is a bit tough on weekends so look at the side streets for free parking.

It has been awhile that we didn't go to Redbud. This afternoon, wife suggested afternoon tea though we had light lunch. So we went there. I ordered fish cutlet bun w/fries per the menu. Turned out fries not included. Discussed with server. She confirmed fries were not included and would cost $3.00. She further explained that there must be an translation error from the Chinese version. So I didn't have the fries I expected. At the end and in order the reduce the damage to the restaurant's image, the server sent us 2 cups of mushroom soup though my wife said one was enough. What happens if I can't read Chinese but English? I would like to hear the response and comments from the Management. While every business has to closely look into its operating costs, I believe: - 1. Server should not argue and make excuse on the mistake the business made 2. Benefit of doubt should always go to customers. These are my 2cents. -- at Redbud Restaurant.

Made the mistake of taking my 3 year old grandson here for lunch. At the beginning, they seem to be taking the COVID approach of seating us a distance away from others, that soon dissipated and seven grown men were soon placed right next to us. I was even asked to move aside to make room for them . They club sandwich costs $14.25 but I could easily get better quality elsewhere for under $10. What irritated me most is that I asked three different waitresses for additional napkins and never got them. There were about 5 waitresses so setvice was definitely way below par. They are not cheap but the decor is rundown and the place is dirty.

Red Bud is your typical HK style cafe restaurant. It's located in a busy plaza, with shared parking. This means that finding parking can be an arduous task, especially during dim sum hours. There's a cheap dim sum restaurant in the same plaza. The restaurant setting was a little more upscale than your usual hk cafés. It was also quite spacious. The breakfast menu had two pages. Two things I noticed: 1) the prices are slightly higher than others in Richmond in that for the same price, the meal would come with more items at other restaurants. 2) instead of congee, they have a couple of options for savoury oatmeal. You'd add $1 for cold drinks. I chose the noodle in soup, with luncheon meat and beef brisket. The beef brisket was quite tender. I got the cold Yuan Yang (milk tea/coffee) and it was probably one of the worst I've had. It was so watered down!!! Elaborating on my aforementioned point above, usually at other restaurants, my noodle would come with an additional item such as congee, rice roll etc. My husband got the 2 eggs + 2 meat combo. He chose the cream sauce macaroni instead of toast. Upon taking a bite, he regretted not choosing the toast. I took a bite of the macaroni and it was so bland. His cold milk tea was way too sweet. In conclusion, the experience we had was okay. Not the best but also not the worst. However, with Richmond filled with a lot of much more delicious alternatives, I probably wouldn't be coming back for my HK breakfast fix.

Redbud restaurant is typical HK style cafe, it located on Granville Ave and St Albans Rd in Richmond. I came here for lunch and ordered a curry beef brisket. It's mediocre and watery curry with poor quality of beef brisket. Friendly and efficient service. Good portion and reasonable price. I would come back if I looking for cha chaan teng in this area.

4 course holiday dinner with seafood cream soup, fruit salad, steak and pork chop with mashed potatoes, and tiramisu for dessert
Tony J.

Hong Kong style cafe that serves western food. Went there on Xmas Eve dinner. Place was packed. Only had a courses menu available, which included soup, salad, main course and dessert. Had steak and pork chop for main course and it tasted decent. Had to wait a while until the main course was served, but I'll cut them some lack due to it being a holiday. Prices are okay for the holiday course. Will have to see their regular menu to really judge.

Lobster soup
Pat D.

Came here for dinner a few nights ago. It's kind of a Chinese restaurant meets a HK cafe. It's located next to the 7-Eleven. Anyway I had a lobster combo. Unfortunately the original lobster combo which came with oysters was not available. The one I did have came with lobster soup which I thought was pretty good and had other types of seafood in it as well, like scallop. It came with bread. I had the baked lobster Portuguese style with E-Fu noodles. It's always a good time when I have lobster. However, some of the pieces I felt were only there for decoration as there was little to no meat in those pieces. But the lobster meat that I did have and sauce were pretty good. The noodles were decent with the sauce, otherwise it would be rather bland. The combo also came with a vegetable dish with Italian sausage. I could probably do without it and have them knock a few dollars off the combo. This dish was clearly filler. And the combo came with mango pudding for dessert. Service is hit or miss. One of the servers was very genuine and nice. Whereas the other two were satisfactory. All in all, it's definitely not somewhere I would purposely choose to go to if I went out next time, but on the same token I wouldn't really complain if I made a return trip.

Portuguese chicken baked rice with pineapple
Alfonso C.

The entrance is slightly hidden and looks like you're entering the restaurant from the wrong back-door. However, once inside it is much nicer and has TVs. The service was acceptable for a HK cafe, and only a bit slow, especially since my last visit was at 1pm and it was after the lunch rush. I ordered the food in the picture (pineapple + Portuguese chicken baked rice), and it comes with burnt onions, some mushrooms and of course the pineapple and chicken and rice. The chicken tasted like baked chicken McNuggets...I'm not sure if that's a good or bad thing, but basically the meat was very white and a bit dry. The pineapples were good (sweet and not stringy) and altogether was a decent meal. The HK milk tea was definitely the highlight of the meal and the damage to wallet was $10 before tips. Will return for the milk tea and easy parking.

She wanted to go to Kirin. Plenty of parking in the mall. Hostess greeted and seated us promptly. Restaurant was busy but not crazy. This was at 10am on a Thursday. Waiters were attentive. Usual table service was in place. Took our order and food came out at acceptable pace. When we were done, they politely boxed up the leftovers and we paid our bill. So service was on point. The food we ordered came out hot. The staples that I order to test was hargow, suimai and pai gwut(spareribs). All 3 dishes in general were good.....the hargow could have used an extra minute or 2 in the steamer. The suimai was very good. I tasted every ingredient in this dish. Usually it is just a complete mix and you can't discern the different flavors. They tried something different with the cheongfun by adding pieces of Chinese donut to the roll. I personally think it didn't add much to the dish, taste or texture wise. I did like the pea shoots with shrimp. I think it is a good combo. All in all a good dimsum. I also noticed they did not charge us a tea service. The cost of the food is comparable with other restaurants at this level. On a typical Sunday evening, the restaurant is usually fully occupied, but my friend had thoughtfully made a reservation a week in advance, so our table for five was ready upon arrival. As always, the restaurant was clean and well maintained, with good airflow thanks to the wide-open front entrance facing the parkade. The front desk receptionist greeted us cordially, and we were escorted to a cozy table in a comfortable location -- not too close to the washrooms, which I appreciated. Our meal began with the Kirin Special Assorted Cold Appetizer, followed by Crab Meat, Dried Scallops, and Fish Maw Soup. The soup arrived piping hot and was delicious, with a generous portion that could easily have served eight people. We also enjoyed Pea Tips Braised with Bean Curd and Assorted Mushrooms in Consommé, Marinated Free-Range Crispy Skin Chicken, Fillet of Cod Sautéed with Seasonal Vegetables, and Live Crab in Consommé with Ginger and Green Onion, served with E-fu Noodles. Overall, the quality and taste of every entrée were excellent. Service was top-notch -- tea and hot water were refilled constantly, bones and used plates were replaced promptly, and the servers were friendly and engaging throughout the evening. My friend and his family have apparently been regulars at this location for over two decades, which likely contributed to the exceptional attentiveness we received. However, one aspect of the experience genuinely disturbed me. All servers, including the captains, continued to wear masks at all times. While this practice was understandable two years ago, now -- five years after the onset of the pandemic, with COVID-19 managed similarly to other seasonal respiratory illnesses -- the continued universal masking in a fine-dining environment feels unnecessary and detracts from the overall guest experience. Fine dining, in my view as an avid foodie, is built on human connection, hospitality, and personal interaction. Masks create a more impersonal, almost clinical atmosphere. In a well-ventilated space like this, the environmental risk does not seem to justify the visual and social trade-off. Rather than providing reassurance, the persistent masking may unintentionally signal that the environment is unsafe or that management is out of step with current provincial health guidelines, where masking is now a personal choice rather than a mandate. Final verdict: Food & Service: 5/5 Ambience: 2/5 Overall: 3/5 -- as the current aesthetic feels more like a relic of 2020 than a leader in 2026 hospitality.

Not sure if it has been the same chef/cook on Saturdays during breakfast and lunch time but the food hasn't been as tasty when compared to weekdays. Today we went for a family lunch gathering on a Saturday and the restaurant was jam packed. Not sure if this was also a factor but every single dish we ordered was so greasy. We also noticed that the portion wasn't as big as what we usually received on weekdays. The complementary soup that came was lukewarm so that was already one point off. The dishes when served were not presented nicely. For example, there was food hanging off the plate and pot (they eventually fell to floor) or spilled sauce on the table. Even my favorite dish stir fried beef rice noodles was just mediocre today. We ordered 6 dishes and every single dish was salty and greasy. It really felt like they were made in haste. It was overall a disappointment and I don't think I'd want to visit the restaurant on a Saturday again.
