My cousins and I were in the area and found @happy_baos on Yelp so we gave it a try. First thing I noticed was it was a cute little family(?) restaurant. The servers were also nice and we got our food pretty quickly. A for that hehe. For food, we ordered the Zha Jiang Noodles, the Signature Dumplings, and the Pork Sheng Jian Bao (pictured). Now, if I'm going to be completely honest, the noodles weren't the best I've had here. I think because I'm so used to the Korean Black Bean Noodles, this one was a little too different for me. Had an early lunch here last week and boy did their food hit the right spot. Located inside Mekong Plaza. They are open for dine in, but beware the restaurant has a small dining area. My mom and I shared the beef noodle soup, xiao long bao dumplings, and the Chinese hamburger. Everything we ordered was delicious. I would list this place as my first choice when I am craving some authentic Chinese food and dumplings. read more

1 of the best DanDan Noodles I've had, and the spare ribs were melt in the mouth yummy, but I'm deducting a for a few reasons. There were 5 of us (3 adults + 2 kids, the youngest is 5yo) and we were initially given a table that can comfortably accommodate only 4 until I asked if we can attach a small unoccupied table next to it, thus we had room for 5 orders & drinks. The Servers were accommodating but I found it rude to be handed the check even while we were still eating - the place was not even packed, no one was waiting for a table but if there was, still not an excuse to give the check before customers are done eating. We were surprised to be billed extra $13 (probably 15%) for having a party of 5 - no note on the menu or on the check, except for the extra charge - is this a common practice in AZ? As mentioned earlier we had 2 kids in our party, so the $23 was for the 5th set plate, etc & the use of the small table? We gave very little tip because of the 5th person fee. read more

The best Chinese I've had in Arizona. I used to live in Houston where there is a huge Asian community. Chinese, Vietnamese, Thai, Malay, Korean food that is totally amazing. Coming to Phoenix, I've missed that. I found Mekong plaza in Mesa and it did a lot to scratch the Asian food itch I get. Today I tried Happy Bao's and I think I've found my new favorite place to eat in Phoenix. The dumplings, Bao's and noodles are perfect. The place is super busy (always a good sign) but the service is very efficient and it doesn't appear that you have to wait long. The food came out incredibly fresh, hot and tasty. I tried the XLB, the Sheng Jian Bao combo and the beef chow fun. All excellent flavor, texture and taste. I can't wait to go back and sample more. read more

Was craving some soup dumplings so thought I'd give this place a try. Recently I've been traveling to Arizona from California more cause of friends and family. It's always hard looking for new places to eat cause you never know if the food is going to be good in your taste compared to home. This place is GOOD!! We ordered some soup dumplings, some steamed dumplings, the cucumber salad, tripe and beef tendon salad, beef chow fun, Dan Dan noodles, young chow fried rice and chef special moo shoo. The cucumber salad was bomb highly recommended! Very flavorful and refreshing. The soup dumplings had a lots of soup and the skin Is thin and not chewy. Very very good def get an order if you plan on eating here. I liked the Dan Dan noodles it had flavor with a little of the Szechuan numbing. Honestly everything was cooked well. We were all very impressed and if we have a dumpling craving this is our go to spot. read more

I'm leaving a three star review because the food was excellent, but because they had a Groupon problem, the manager treated us like it was our fault and took a very long time to get the manager to talk to us. Most people probably aren't using a Groupon so if that's you, the food is 5 star from me. The Dan Dan noodles are spicy which our family likes, and that was my personal favorite (my wife's too) of the Hong Kong rice, the Baos, the dumplings, and the Chinese hamburgers. We brought 6 people, and we all enjoyed all the food, and it's not easy to please everyone. Groupon wasn't paying them according to the manager, so they didn't want to honor what we paid for even though it was purchased the day before, so it was far from expired. We felt like we were being ignored because the waitress listened to us and went back to the manager multiple times, but we were sitting patiently for quite a while before the manager showed up. He said please don't buy another Groupon for them knowing the same deal we bought was still available on Groupon. He told the waitress they would not honor the Groupon that we had printed out, but when he arrived to the table, finally, he said he would honor it "this time." Until the manager showed up, it felt like they were trying to scam us because they were telling us we needed to order something else because they stopped honoring those coupons from Groupon the previous week. I hope they worked out the issues with Groupon. As of today, the deal they offered is no longer available. The area is really cool because you have a full Asian market and lots of Asian restaurants and other businesses around, so it's a nice place to go and spend some time looking around. The business itself is not viewable from the parking lot, so you have to enter the plaza/mall first which we didn't know before we left. Update: Since I received a response but was unable to respond to the response without editing or removing my original review, I'm appending this as an update. We're probably going to come back for Dan Dan noodles because they are that good. I do understand why you have to be paid and that's a business need, but also remember the customer with a Groupon has a contract with a 3rd party that you entered into an agreement with, so a customer's Groupon is as binding as if you created it yourself. Groupon is a big company with many successful transactions, and I'm sure you will get paid. It is not a good impression to suggest to customers that you won't honor your agreements. read more

Some of the best XLB's in the valley. I often search for restaurants with XLB that I haven't tried in the Phoenix area for years and this is one of the top 2 in the valley. We had XLB and the beef chow fun and both were amazing. Love the Asian market/area it's in as well, it's the closest thing to a "China town" that Phoenix has. Visiting from DC area I can say I have the taste for asian cuisine! Every time I visit Phoenix, I try to find a good asian cuisine spot, especially for my friend who doesn't know of many. This place really hit the spot. The soup dumplings were perfect, and came with ginger and vinegar. The skin of the soup dumplings were soft and chewy, and the soup wasn't super salty. The sheng jian bao was fried to perfection and seemed like they made it fresh as we came in 30 mins after opening. These were super juicy as well similar to the soup dumpling but loved the fluffiness and crispness of the bao. We ordered the lu rou fan which was pretty good, I wish it had more sauce but overall no complaints! Zha jiang noodle is a pretty simple dish and they didn't mess it up. Noodle texture was slippery and chewy which made it perfect. Overall- very good chinese restaurant in the mekong plaza and would definitely come back! read more

We finally tried this place after years of walking by it. Omg I'm so glad we did. We ordered the house signature dumplings, pork sheng jian bao, vegetable stir fry with rice noodles, beef chow fen and the taro xiao bao. I'd normally post photos of our food, but we devoured everything b/c it was SO GOOD. The aroma of the food was so inviting and the flavor was amazing! Portions were generous. Food was served to go via no contact. Containers were in a box for easy take away. No layer of sauce or grease at the bottom of the containers. Just yummy food that was perfect beyond words. Moving to AZ from Ca.. Finding good Asian food has been a bit challenging. Tried happy bao for the first time and it was surprisingly really good. Xlb are better than din Tai. More juicy and flavorful. Beef chow fun was really good also. Cucumbers was one of my favorite. Really refreshing. Dan Dan noodles was really good. Not too much of the tingling. I wanted to love happy bao....they answered all of my bao dreams by having both Xiao long bao and Shen jian bao.... Unfortunately, neither one was stellar. All of the bao was fine, but none of them were amazing, which made me so sad. Maybe they will improve with time, and I hope they do, because Phoenix needs a place to get Shen jian bao that's delicious. read more

It pains me to say that I have noticed a significant decline in both flavor and quality at this once-favorite spot. I have brought my close friends, and boyfriend, and even enjoyed a double date here. But it doesn't feel the same anymore. My recent experience has left me feeling extremely let down. The Xiao Long bao at Happy Bao used to be my favorite, but on my last visit, they were really disappointing. All of them had fallen apart and the soup was leaking out before I could even grab them. I was really disappointed when I brought up the issue with the worker. She seemed so upset and unhelpful and told me that she couldn't do anything about it. I'm really disappointed with this response. It seems like my concerns as a customer aren't being taken seriously I'm disappointed with Happy Bao because they never seem to want to accommodate my requests. I was really disappointed when I asked for more chili oil to make my food taste better, but the staff didn't seem to want to give me enough. I'm really disappointed with the stingy attitude. Been meaning to visit this spot since it's initial opening. It is tough since there are so many great Asian food joints in East Mesa. This time around, my friend and I finally swung in. First off, it is in Mekong Plaza....which already to no fault of their own, grossly discourages me from coming often because that parking lot is just a mess. Weekends are a definite NO for me as people swerve around with no regard for pedestrian safety in conjunction with pedestrians walking in the CENTER of the aisles as if they do not know that like themselves not mere moments ago, other people are seeking a parking spot as well. But I heavily digress. Visited on a week night, not to my surprise, the place was still pretty packed as there was a slight wait for a table for two. Once we were seated, waters and menus came quick. Apparently they had new menus made as some of the pictures of menus posted on Yelp look much older. Now they have pictures of all of their dishes, awesome touch and very helpful. We tried their pork and seafood soup dumplings (Xiao Long Bao), noodles w/ lamb, "Chinese Burger" (Roujiamo), and one more dish, I forget. Everything was delicious, though took a bit to come out. And came out one after another with some decent time in between. No worries, allowed us to drink up more water. I've had the pleasure to try a few places around the valley that offer hand drawn noodles, this place ranks pretty high up in my opinion. The lamb noodle soup had very flavorful and rich broth, not overly full of sodium. Next time I will opt for their traditional pork xiao long bao, as I found the option with seafood (priced a few bucks more) did not really add to my experience. It was in fact the most underwhelming dish of the 4 we ordered. My absolute favorite winner of the night was the Roujiamo. The dough is perfectly baked/fried (not sure how it is prepared). The filling was just as the kids these days say on TikTok, "Picasso." There were plenty of other items on the menu I want to eventually try. I cannot say I'd dine in again ever (place was small and I tend to get claustrophobic) but I will definitely order take out next time I am in the area. While we were eating, there was plenty traffic of patrons coming in to pick up take out so I presume the food is quite well kept and hold up well during the journey home. read more

To start, the service and ambience were perfect. We were greeted with a smile and sat in the back. Which is always perfect for me. I like to have a little nook where I can enjoy my food. And we tried a little bit of everything honestly, we had to try the spicy dumplings, and then their mix of 20 dumplings. We also did a mix of their bao, soup Dumplings and Zheng jiang boa mix. Some more to have there and some more just to take home. We live in California so we had to make sure that we package them correctly and brought them back home. We were so excited to try them there that we had to order a little extra so that we can take home. These are some of the best dumplings that we've had in a very long time. The Flavors were just perfection. I know I say that a lot but when I love the food, there's no other way to describe it done for it to be perfect. We came out to Arizona for graduation, but are willing to come back just for the bao. This place is like no other do yourself a favor and visit the whole market. True Chinese xiao long bao, dumplings and so much more. Had the spicy pork w rice but way too spicy. Thought it was stir fried with green bell peppers but it's w jalapeño. Usually I can tolerate a lot of spice but this was waaaaaay too spicy even for spicy lovers. But don't let that deter you from coming. All the bao's are handmade fresh daily by the chef.
