I think about Hao Cafe all the time -- no joke, I dream about their juicy, fresh, perfectly roasted duck. I've tried roasted duck all around the SGV, and nothing (truly nothing) beats the one they serve here. The skin is crisp, the meat is tender, and the flavor is just on another level. It's the kind of dish that ruins other roasted ducks for you in the best way possible. Their other Cantonese dishes are pretty tasty too and definitely worth trying. The only thing I personally would pass on is their Hong Kong-style milk tea. If you're really craving a solid HK-style milk tea, I'd say drive over to Arcadia and try Delicious Food Corner, or check out Alice's Kitchen in Temple City. But overall, I highly recommend Hao Café. Everything was really good and good proportion. The only thing I wish was that their beef chow fun was a little bland and needed a little bit little bit more soy sauce, and beef. Their honey walnut shrimp was very flavorful and I really enjoyed your house special chow mien. It had just the right amount of gravy and they chashu was really good. Word of mouth was right--this spot is a hidden gem! A friend recommended Hao Café to me, mentioning it was a new Hong Kong-style café that's been gaining popularity by word of mouth. We decided to check it out for lunch, and now I totally get the hype. It's a small café (probably around 20 seats), and there was already a wait when we arrived, but that honestly made me more curious. Luckily, we came at lunchtime and were able to take advantage of their lunch specials, which are an incredible deal. We wanted something light and ended up ordering: Beef Chow Fun Salt & Pepper Pork Lemon Iced Tea Let me just say--this was one of the best beef chow fun dishes I've ever had. And the salt and pepper pork? Hands down the best I've ever tasted. The pork was incredibly tender, juicy, and bursting with flavor. Not overly battered or greasy--just done right. Portion sizes were generous. We were both full and still had enough to take home. In this economy, that's a win! You really get a big bang for your buck here. My wife and I stopped by Hao Cafe not long after they opened, and we managed to snag a table in the corner before they started getting busy. Between the two of us, we ordered a bowl of macaroni with shredded ham, French toast, stir-fried noodles, a large bowl of wontons, and two Hong Kong coffee milk teas. In hindsight, this was way too much food, as we ended up taking almost the entire order of stir-fried noodles to go. All the dishes were pretty standard preparations. Nothing was over-the-top spectacular, but I did really enjoy the cook on the macaroni noodles and the wok hei flavor of the stir-fried noodles--a flavor you only get when food is prepared over a large flame. The wontons are the reason I'm deducting a star. Out of the eight wontons I received, one of them had a massive piece of tendon that rendered the entire wonton inedible. Additionally, the shrimp inside wasn't as juicy, tender, or plump as some other wontons I've had at other locations. The texture of the pork filling was also slightly different from what I'm used to, reminding me more of a fish ball. The broth itself was fine, as was the cook on the veggies. Finding a Hong Kong and Cantonese style restaurant in Duarte is a nice surprise. This area predominantly has Mexican and American food, so it is very rare to see San Gabriel Valley spillover out here. Hao Cafe is one of those welcome exceptions. My review is strictly based on a takeout order, so I cannot speak to the dine in experience. I did notice the inside is quite small, but that is completely understandable to keep overhead costs down while still providing quality food. The recurring theme across the board with my order was excellent wok hei. Beef Chow Fun with Black Bean Sauce: This had fantastic wok hei flavor on the ho fun noodles. It is one of the few places that actually manages to maintain the smoky char even when packaged to go. The black bean sauce was savory without being overly salty, and the beef was very tender. String Beans: These also had a great wok hei flavor. They were stir fried with ground pork and were a bit more oyster sauce forward than other places, but it was a unique and tasty preparation. Black Pepper Beef Udon: This was fairly standard for Hong Kong style cafes, but the black pepper flavor was a standout and the wok hei was again very present. Honey Walnut Shrimp: This featured super plump, delicious shrimp and fresh walnuts. It is probably one of the top walnut shrimps I have had recently, though so many places do it well that it is hard to call it the absolute best. However, for a restaurant in Duarte, it is excellent. Seafood Tofu Hot Pot: This had lots of tofu pieces and a fair amount of seafood. The taste was clean and good without being overly salty. Overall, the execution of wok hei in each dish makes this a fantastic addition to the neighborhood. I know they serve breakfast here as well, which I hope to try in the near future. read more

Big fan of this place since they opened. Many of their dishes are very good. Service is typically quick and responsive. The ambience is typical of a Hong Kong cafe, nothing fancy, but clean and serviceable. Only 2 stars because of melted styrofoam containers. Consuming the chemicals from melted styrofoam over time can cause cancer, especially blood cancers. To their credit, many of their dishes come in plastic containers, but after seeing melted styrofoam from a fried rice order, they either need to stop using styrofoam or place a foil barrier in between the styrofoam and food. The food is really good. I came here for lunch. We got so many dishes to try family style and portions are big. I recommend to get their minced pork with egg over rice. I also liked their chicken wings and beef chow fun. I would not recommend the duck. It's very bony with little to no meat. Their HK hot milk tea is authentic. Love it. My husband got the lemon iced tea and it was so good too. Free refills too. This place would've been 5 stars but the service was nonexistent. We had to get our own containers to pack up the food and flag the servers down multiple times for refills. The place inside is super tiny with a couple of tables. What a gem! This hole in the wall restaurant serves great cantonese food and they have great lunch specials from 11am-5pm. The portions are pretty large for lunch and come with a drink (ice teas, coffees, milk teas, sodas) and rice. There are a few tables inside and the service is quick and friendly. I came here during their grand opening and every time the service is really friendly and quick. I came here with mu family and we ordered the mapo tofu, shrimp with spicy salt with shell, and orange peel chicken. I almost want to keep this place a secret but the secret's already out, because they are busy! Hao Cafe is located in a small plaza in Duarte. It's the first HK type eatery in the city and away from all the other HK spots in Arcadia or Temple City about 15 minutes away. It's a small business with a small interior so it'll easily fill up, causing people to have to wait outside. The staff is pretty friendly and efficient. The menu covers many of your typical Hong Kong breakfast and lunch items so it's easy to find comfort food on the menu. Everything we tried on our visits were good. The black pepper beef udon has chewy noodles and a nice wok flavor. The curry is rich and slightly spicy, just enough to detect but not burn the mouth. Salt and pepper pork chop was of course greasy but had the right amount of seasoning. The pork chops with eggplant was also good, with the pork being surprisingly tender. Their corned beef egg sandwich was served on a very soft 'Asian' bread, which is very fine and have no air pockets. The fries that same with it were fresh and crispy. It didn't taste like they used old oil. The only thing I would've improved on was the minced pork and egg over rice. It was a bit bland and needed more salt and spices. The parking can be tight as the lot is shared with other businesses. The portions are big, the prices are reasonable and the food is great. Since there were two of us, I noticed it was slightly cheaper to just each do a 1 item BBQ plate and share it so we went that route. I noticed there are a lot of fairly priced items on their menu. Hao Cafe took over Corner Palace Chinese Restaurant and recently had their soft opening last month. I came to this restaurant last Monday (Memorial Day) with my mom for breakfast. We arrived a little before 10:30 am (breakfast is served until 11 am). Although there were several parties ahead of us, we were seated within 10 minutes after putting ourselves onto the waiting list because we were willing to sit at the bar (which I wouldn't recommend since it is not the most comfortable seating and also my mom and the lady sitting next to us almost fell off the stool when they sat down). Initially we had ordered Fish Filet Congee with chow mein w/ soy sauce ($10.95 prior to tax) but were told after waiting 20 minutes that they were out of congee. My mom had also initially ordered steam rice rolls but were told they were also out of it. So we ended up changing our order to B5 Fish Ball Rice Vermicelli Soup. So with a long wait and what items we were able to order, this is what we ended up getting: B13 Spam & Egg Sandwich with French Fries, $9.95 prior to tax- I ordered this western style breakfast. The portion size is on the smaller side but good for a light breakfast for one. But my mom and I shared it while we waited for the rest of our order. We both liked it (but that was because were hungry). B5 Fish Ball Rice Vermicelli Soup, $9.95 prior to tax- Because it was taking so long, my mom asked for this item to be taken to go. My husband ate this the next day and thought it was okay. But he would have preferred for there to be more fish balls (there was 6 in our order). B1 HK Shrimp Wonton Noodle Soup, $9.95 prior to tax- We ordered this to go for a friend. But do not know what he thought of it. But the lady that sat next to my mom ordered it (since they were out of congee) and she told me that she thought it was just okay and that she makes a better one at home. Hong Kong Milk Tea- each of the meals we ordered comes with a drink and I picked this (if you want your drink iced, it cost $1 extra). I was rather disappointed with this Hong Kong milk tea because it was over steeped, thus bitter :( But I do appreciate that the milk tea is not sweetened so that you can adjust it to your sweetness level (you can add your own condensed milk tea and there is sugar. But the restaurant did not have any sugar substitute for that they prefer that instead). Lemon Tea- My mom got this tea hot. She thought it was okay. Our to go order (the HK shrimp wonton noodle soup) came with a drink so I ordered the HK milk tea (before I had tried mine) and also gave that to the friend we had ordered it for, but again, I don't know if he liked it or if it was bitter and over steeped like mine). Chow mein w/ soy sauce- This was part of the order that we had originally ordered which was brought to our table. It was really oily, but that's to be expected. I thought it tasted fine and so did my mom. The portion is good for the breakfast meal for one but I think also fair to share with another. Initially we were charged for the fish filet congee and chow mein w/ soy sauce combo (as we were told we would not be charged because they ran out of congee). But good thing I did make sure to check the receipt before paying and got it removed. We were at the restaurant for about an hour. That just seemed a bit too long and very disappointed that they ran out of congee (although I do understand since it was 30 minutes left before breakfast was done. But the employee we had told us that if you are seated by 11 am, you can still order breakfast). Also the milk tea was a major let down. There are only about 8 or 9 small tables and 4 chairs for bar seating. It was full and I think the restaurant just wasn't prepared to take on the small crowd they had that morning. They are offering free iced lemon tea for all dine in customers from now until June 18th. This café is super small so keep that in mind. There were quite a few hiccups, but I definitely didn't fault them since they are so new. Plus, the staff was still very kind no matter how crazy it got. During grand opening we were also treated with free lemon ice tea for dine in with refills. The place is small inside, only one table can fit the 6 of us. The rest are more suitable for groups of 2 or 4, and there's a bar seating. From the lunch menu, there are many choices to choose from ranging from $11.95 - $13.95 which is very reasonable. We shared: Roast duck rice plate, seafood pot with tofu, stir fry string beans, kung pao chicken, pepper salt pork chop, & stir fry udon with beef. Everything came out hot and delicious with wok flavored. It was great we came with a group and can shared dishes with family style. Glad there are more Cantonese choices restaurant in East SGV.
