    Won ton noodles soup
    Josephine C.

On a Sunday morning in February, my family and I had breakfast there at 9:20am. Some of the tables was occupied by regulars eating there, we got seated right away and noticed the decor is brighter with paint job or extra lighting, There was 2 servers taking orders, serving food, clearing tables, refill on teas. We ordered won ton noodles with lemon tea, century egg congee with soy sauce chow fun and coffee, chicken steak and eggs with macaroni soup and lemon tea. Each plate came out one at a time. My wonton noodles soup has 3 gai lan, 5 pieces of big won tons and standard noodles. The chow fun had good wok her and congee was thicker and yummy. We had our ice lemon tea refilled 3x which was great. Overall I had a good time eating and watching tvb -hong kong channel. There was plenty of parking. outside. Next time I want to try their lunch or dinner.

Perfect for late night eats. Came here after celebrating my birthday and we could count on the fact that they were open on Christmas day too. We had our party of 9 people seated immediately. Service was efficient and our food came out quickly too. As with every HK cafe/restaurant, there's a huge variety of foods on the menu and I generally associate the cuisine with nostalgic, easy to eat comfort foods. And that's what you get here too. We got the: 1) Thai Tea: - Sweet and creamy. Definitely made with more condensed milk. Great yummy twist on Thai tea. Can never go wrong with that. 2) Ovaltine: -I know it's a pre-mix drink, but it's one of my favorites. Nice and chocolate taste. Made with condensed milk. Delicious, sweet, and malty. Another classic and a must get for me whenever I see it on the menu. 3) Eel with Curry and Rice: -My brother and his friend debated on this and decided to get this after awhile and it's a good choice. The curry is fried into the rice and it's a savory yellow curry. Fried rice is delicious and comes with corn and green onions. Eel is moist and tastes great with the rice. Not bad! 4) Fried Siu Mai (Fried ordered this and I grabbed a piece): 5) Borscht: -A MUST whenever I go into an HK style cafe restaurant or actually any restaurant that has this soup. My top favorite soup, no matter what style it comes in. I already ate before coming here but everything I took a bite of was pretty good. I'd love to come back again on an empty stomach.

Tasty Choice did turn out to be a tasty choice when my friends and I decided to come here on a Friday night. It was later at night (9pm) when we came and most other Chinese/Hong Kong food in the area were almost closing, so we picked this spot as it closes at 2am! We did not regret it. I loved the vibe of this place, it felt very cozy and homely. It is a huge menu and there were so many options. We ordered the sauteed string beans, xo fried rice, beef cubes (forgot what it was called exactly), and beef chow fun and did family style. I was so happy lol everything was so good. Our food didn't take super long to come out either and came out one by one or as it was ready. Service was great and one of the employees even offered to take a picture of us when he saw I was trying to take a selfie haha. I would definitely come back another time whenever I'm in the area!

Out of all the HK cafes, Tasty Choice is my fav and they open late!! Obviously haven't been to every single one in SGV but I love their pineapple bun because the butter is warm enough where it actually melts. They have big portions so you'll probably bring some food back. Also I enjoyed every single dish and the service is pretty good.

Checked out Tasty Choice in San Gabriel for the first time and was impressed by just how extensive the menu is. So many options to choose from, so we ordered a variety of dishes to share. The German-style pig's knuckle had a nice cumin-forward flavor, though we were hoping for a crispier texture. The assorted mushroom braised seafood with egg tofu was comforting and silky, but the overall flavor was a bit light and could have used more seasoning. The honey walnut shrimp was nicely crunchy with medium-sized shrimp. The sautéed string beans were well seasoned with a pleasant smokiness from the wok. The salted pepper spicy fish fillet was crunchy and enjoyable, though not very spicy and could have used a bit more pepper to really pop. We also ordered the beef rice porridge, which was warm, flavorful, and very comforting. Service was excellent, and all of our dishes came out within about 10 minutes, which was impressive given how much we ordered. Overall, a great spot for Hong Kong style family dishes, and I'd definitely come back to try more items from their huge menu.

Wow I am very impressed by this place. The service was phenomenal!! Atmosphere was chill. Everything we got was delicious. The price is great. This is our new favorite late night hang out spot!

Everyone has their go-to Cantonese café in the SGV, and Tasty Choice just happens to be mine. They've been around for years, and I've probably eaten here dozens of times by now. Whether it's breakfast, lunch, or a late dinner, the staff is always friendly and the food hits the spot. Quality is consistently solid for this style of Cantonese café cooking. Some of my favorites are the oxtail with red wine sauce, the German pork shank, and the chicken steak with black pepper sauce. They open early for breakfast and stay open until 2am, which makes them a clutch option for late-night eats in the area. If you've never been, it's worth checking out.

Recently my family been coming here quite a bit, so it's been almost a regular for them. I haven't been here since I was a child and I have to say I was pretty surprised by the service and the food. We got the baked pork chop, chicken spaghetti with black pepper sauce, and the grilled chicken and pork chop w/ rice. The baked pork chop's sauce was how I liked it, if I had to complain I don't really care for the pork that much. I might see if I can change it to baked chicken stick instead next time if I get it next time. The grilled chicken and pork chop was pretty standard and as always I always prefer chicken steak than pork at hk cafe but especially here. Maybe pork chop isn't their best thing to get here. What was the most surprising to me was the chicken spaghetti with black pepper. That was REALLY good. The chicken slices/bits were also marinated perfectly and I just liked this dish a lot. I can see why they are still open to this day. The waiter (especially) was especially kind to us and that was definitely ++ points for me.

We came here for a casual lunch and found very authentic HK cafe food. As the area is increasing significantly in HK style fusion and spin offs, I am always craving for something that truly resembles Hk and this is the SPOT. Atmosphere is very simple, your typical cafe and not fancy. I highly recommend the eel rice, chicken wings, and rice noodles. Everything was good and service was also exceptional service in this area. It's quite rare to find good food AND good service. Highly recommend this place and will definitely come back!

I went to this location for lunch today, and it was delicious. This restaurant shared a parking space with a Shanghainese restaurant, and finding a parking space will be a challenge during the weekend. I ordered the pork chop with Italian sauce. The sauce is tasty and a bit sweet. The pork chop portion was generous, and the price for a cold drink was only $.75 if you ordered the food from its lunch special menu. The service is excellent, with different servers coming to refill drinks. I highly recommend this place and will come back again.

Breakfast in San Gabriel, Los Angeles, California... I've had this restaurant bookmarked for years! Many of my friends (Ray, Nelson, Richard - RIP, Grace, Tim, Regis, and John) have written stellar reviews for Tasty Choice! I HAD TO visit! I was the first customer of the morning. Parking was easy in their private, free lot. I was greeted immediately and was able to choose my seat in the comfortable environment. A Chinese television station was being shown on the big screen. I knew what I wanted (without looking at a menu), so I told the friendly server: "May I have Wonton min". He replied: "Wonton noodle?" Me: "Yes!" He asked me what I wanted to drink. Me: "Hot tea, please." A pot of tea was brought promptly, along with a plate, napkins, spoon, disposable cup, and a pair of chopsticks. Soon, a steaming bowl of dumplings, noodles, broth, and choi sum was placed in front of me. It was perfect! It hit the spot on a 57°F May morning! I especially enjoyed the shrimp in each dumpling and the thin, chewy noodles! Thanks for the efficient service and the extra tea and cup cover! The server noticed that i was taking the disposable cup with me and offered to top it off! How thoughtful and kind! I appreciate you!

We woke up early and craved for HK style yin yang. We sorted through Yelp and found out that Tasty Choice opens at 8 am and drove there for breakfast. The menu provides all the basic HK style breakfast. Good combination on the Chinese and western style. The yin yang tasted good, maybe a little weak on the coffee side. The congee is cooked well with a smooth consistency. The chicken in the congee was marinated. The pineapple bun was served warm with the melting butter. Not all places prepared the pineapple bun like that. I ordered the grilled chicken steak and it was very fragrant and was grilled with a crispy top. The chicken remained juicy. The meal came with toast AND the macaroni in soup. Plenty of food! The service was very attentive. I like that the waiter checked on refilling our yin yang and checked if our food was good. When we asked for a to go box, he even separated the soup from the macaroni so it would not be soggy when we eat later. We will definitely return for more.

It's basically a Hong Kong cafe that serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. There are several locations, but I like the one in Rosemead the best. I've eaten here many times and never once had a bad experience. We arrived at 8:00 pm on Saturday. The place was empty, understandably they close at 9:00 pm. I ordered seafood chow mein (pan fried with gravy) and HK style sweet and sour pork ribs. Both did not disappoint. The latter comes with a bowl of rice. Really tasty pork ribs. Eat, be nice to the staff, and leave! Their take out business was off the charts during our stay. The staff was working their tails off to keep everything in order. Much respect there! Anyhow, I ordered from the "breakfast menu". They have an extensive pre-lunch - break menu at very affordable prices. I had the minced pork rice noodle in soup with a side of plain chowmein. And I ordered a ice (cold) milk tea (there's an up-charge for cold drinks +2 bucks). I think my total pre-tax and tip was like $16 bucks. Not bad. The chowmein was a bit "limp" in taste but I assume adding a bit of chili-oil would have fixed it for me. Again, this a good deal place. Enough said.

It should be interesting and intriguing for sure. I ordered 4 dishes and 1 drink over the phone. My order was already ready when I got here. Cool beans! TDLR: It's a fine establishment that understands the balance between the price to taste ratio…read more Price things that are around the standard Chinese restaurant establishments, but make it taste a bit better than expected. Baked Sole over Rice (Cream Sauce): This is one of my guilty pleasures. I think they hit par when it comes to this. You get a decent amount of fish, the cream sauce doesn't overpower the overall vibe of the dish, and the cheese is just the right amount. I think it'll fill up the average person. Seafood Tofu Hotpot (comes with white rice): Again, another dish that's difficult to improve outside of using better ingredients. They did enough to make it good while keeping it at a fair price point. It's a good mix of seafood, tofu, and vegetables, and the sauce was the right blend. Curry Beef Brisket Flank (comes with white rice): The wildcard of the restaurant. People who love curry would say that it's not spicy enough, and people who just enjoy the curry flavor without the heat will just be able to tolerate the heat level. The gamble comes from the meat to tendon ratio, which I feel isn't standardized. If you enjoy both, then it shouldn't matter. But as a beef enjoyer who is not that big on tendons, it's a gamble. Signature Fish Fillet (comes with white rice): It's the classic sweet and salty blend in most Chinese restaurants that I find addicting. This place has a more peppery feel to it. It's gonna be hard to eat a lot of it, but those bites before you're sick and tired of the flavor bomb will be worth it. French Style Diced Beef Tenderloin (comes with white rice): I'm not gonna lie. I've had this in far too many Chinese restaurants. I have a hard time differentiating between all of them. What I'll tell you is that the beef is on the peppery end, but it's super soft. If you love slightly undercooked onions and mushrooms, you're in luck. Egg Tofu with Enoki Mushrooms (comes with white rice): Another Chinese restaurant classic that I find impossible to differentiate, but never have I ever been disappointed when ordering this. I will tell you that this is one of the perfect dishes to order if you're dining with vegetarians. Crispy Salt & Pepper Fish Fillet: They weren't lying when they said salt & pepper. It's a very salty piece of fried fish, and the peppers they tossed in there have a decent amount of heat. I'd stay away from this. Crispy Shrimp Spring Rolls: It's the appetizer for the kids (or adults who are being introduced to Chinese food). I'd only get this if someone really wants it or wants to try it. Salted Egg Shrimp: Normally, salted egg _______ is a luxurious delicacy. It's heavily sinful, but also very good. Unfortunately, this place's version is missing something. It's almost like they forgot an ingredient when mixing the sauce, so the overall flavor profile isn't popping out. It's a shame, I was expecting more. Shrimp Fried Rice: Stock standard. It's good, the shrimp pieces are sizable, and it's a good option for people who won't want white rice (which is included in many of the dishes) Hainanese Chicken w/ Rice: Many restaurants get this wrong, mainly just by giving boiled chicken and white rice, then just giving the correct sauces. This place doesn't do that. They get the chicken right, they get the rice right, and they at least got the ginger and scallion sauce, which was good. Overall, a good dish. Hong Kong Egg Waffle: This is supposed to be a dessert, but they served it along with the other food. By the time we got to this, it was already cold. The taste was decent though. Service: Classic Chinese restaurant with better standards. You order, and they give you what you asked for. Don't expect much, and they won't disappoint. Ambiance: It's giving Hong Kong food court x street side dining kind of vibe. I think people who've been to Hong Kong will understand and appreciate the vibe, while those who haven't will just have to take my word for it.

However, it wasn't until the last few…read moreyears where I've come to realize the distinctions between Hong Kong cuisine and mainland Chinese cuisine. It's been an exploration. But with each new Hong Kong style restaurant I try, the more expansive my view, and belly, get. Alice's Kitchen, specifically this one in Temple City, was a refreshing look at not just the food but the vibe as well. Design - Falling into a different world Walking into Alice's Kitchen from the back parking lot is like walking into a vibrant food court back in the 1980s. Bright neon signs are placed throughout the dining room floor, faux food stalls can be seen to give more of a community feel to the inside, and I love the sprawl of different props of newspapers, t-shirts hung on clotheslines, and big advertisements on the walls like you might see in a food court. It really elevated the atmosphere of the space and I loved their branded orange plates, bowls, spoons, and chopsticks. It gave whimsy to this place. Staff - Cool The staff here are like what you expect from any Chinese restaurant. You try to flag one down or grab their attention with your wandering eyes and when they come over you can tell them what you want. They take your order and usually within 5-7 minutes you'll start to see your food heading your way. Perfect for anyone hungry and dying to eat right away. When you ask for to-go boxes at the end of the meal (you definitely will) moments after you get your food packed someone will appear with a tablet ready for you to pay right there at the table. Talk about speed. Food - Onions galore I see that in Hong Kong cuisine there is this mix match of Western and Chinese tastes put together. This fusion of ideas is what brings something like their large pineapple bun sandwiches to existence. We got the BBQ pork (char siu) pineapple bun sandwich and this came warm with a fried egg, slab of butter, generous slices of BBQ pork, and a savory sauce. For one person, this could be a good main dish to be accompanied by a side. For this split between two people, this is a savory sweet dish perfect to wet the appetite. Highly recommend getting one of these. The sweet & sour pork was nostalgic to me. Served with chunks of white onion, green peppers, and pineapple the flavor of this reminded me very much of the sweet & sour pork Chinese-Korean restaurants serve, except for the color being different and no cabbage in the sauce. It has the sweetness brought out by the pineapple but still a bit of tang and deep savoriness of the pork with each bite. The onions were undercooked and you'll see this as a pattern for all their dishes containing onions. The French style filet mignon chunks were fantastic. Juicy and flavorful, each bite makes the mouth water more and more and the texture gave such pleasant mouth feels. The fried basil accompanying it also gave a burst of freshness and herbacious flavors. Just be careful not to accidentally bite into a chunk of ginger. Unless you love ginger. Then go right ahead. The beef chow fun with black bean sauce was great. Nice balance of their black bean sauce with the textures of the chunks of beef, the onions and peppers in this add a nice crunch and difference in flavor that balances all the savoriness. The tofu with spiced salt was also incredible. When I ate this still piping hot the crisp exterior with the hot soft interior made me smile. The spiced coating was flavorful and with some rice it gives a nice balance with each bite. Final Thoughts With all the food we got for dinner, I'm sure I leaned more into the Chinese cuisine side than the Hong Kong side. However, I was happy with the quality and depth of flavors in everything I had. Alice's Kitchen has definitely been one of the better Hong Kong restaurants I've had and I'm excited to explore more of this cuisine in the future. Can't wait to come back!

The ham & egg was done just right, giving that nostalgic HK café vibe. The dry shrimp rice noodle was silky soft with dry shrimp inside and paired perfectly with the soy sauce. And the pineapple bun with butter? Warm, fluffy, slightly crispy on top, with that thick slice of butter melting inside... so good. If you're looking for a solid spot for a casual, comforting meal, this place definitely delivers. Will be back for sure!

(It's probably because they close at 9 PM, and I tend to crave canto food late at night.) The prices are pretty fair/average. I didn't see any lunch specials when I was here for lunch. The chang fun (rice noodle roll) was good. I got the shrimp + leek one, but I think beef might have been the better choice. The seafood congee was also really good with plenty of seafood. Servers spoke Mandarin, Cantonese, and English. I would come back to try the claypot dishes. The menu is pretty extensive and they offer rice and soup dishes. A majority of their dishes can be shared family style so keep that in mind when ordering. Went overboard with ordering and got their chicken congee, a noodle dish, their egg and shrimp, and their fried cod. Both the egg and fish dish came with rice, so we definitely had more than enough for two people! The service was wonderful. We got our food in a matter of minutes after ordering and everything came out piping hot! Flavors were on point and consistent. Will definitely come back to try their pineapple bun sandwiches!

They had stopped serving those items some time in 2024 I believe. Despite this, we still made the best of it. The food we ended up ordering was still very delicious, but we were a bit let down as we didn't get to try the items we came here for. Even though it didn't have everything we wanted, I would still come back for the food they do serve as it is very close to our house. We ordered: HK Style Noodle Soup - 10/10 tastes just like home Minced pork rice - 10/10 would order again String beans - 10/10 perfect savory flavor with a hint of spice Kung Pao Chicken - 10/10 Steamed Flour in House Special Sauce: 10/10 very yummy. The special sauce is peanut based and both sweet and savory. The large was quite large and is perfect for a party of 4 as an appetizer. Dessert: Ovaltine French Toast - just okay. The hype made us want to try it. It was good, but not for the additional price for Ovaltine This spot really feels like you're in Asian. From the color of the seating to the signs all around the restaurant, it reminded me of home.

It's pretty close by but also the quality of food is pretty good for how inexpensive the lunch specials are. You have to pay for the drinks, but so far I haven't seem a limit on the refill (I typically refill only once though but I've also been able to take the drink togo). I would recommend getting the salt and pepper pork chop - my dad says this is literally better than most places we've gone to. I think they season the batter, which is how its so flavorful. We also typically get the eggplant, which comes in a huge plate and comes with rice. My dad likes their curry but I'm not super excited about it. Its good, but not exciting, if you know what I mean. Service is typically pretty good. They move around pretty quickly and food typically comes out pretty quickly too. I would spend about 50-60 dollars and its enough food to last two people maybe an additional 2 or 3 meals, especially since most dishes come with a dish of white rice. The rice isn't great, like it's kind of dry, but its free so no complaints here.

The last few times I've ordered the kung pao chicken, it barely had any veggies. It used to come with a mix of colorful bell peppers, but now it's mostly onions. The sweet and sour fish used to be lightly battered and nice and meaty. On my last visit, it was heavily battered and you could barely taste the fish. I'm not sure if they changed chefs, but the difference in quality is definitely noticeable. It's disappointing because I really like the staff. They're always friendly and provide great service. I'm hoping the food goes back to how it used to be.
