This place is good for the nabe, I guess, but for real pho and banh mi you need to cross the bridge into Chinatown. I've been here a handful of times and at first I was kinda impressed with the food, then after a while I snapped out of it. The sandwiches and pho are decent, but a little expensive for "decent." Sandwich is around $6.80 for a classic. The pho is around $8.00 for rather small bowl. The condiments are reeeeally basic but at least they understand that Sriracha makes EVERYTHING better. I'm glad this is easy walking distance for a work-day lunch. I love the tofu sandwich (no butter, less mayo) and the vermicelli salad with tofu (their tofu really is top notch). The bubble tea is fantastic - honey green or mango for me, please! Sometimes the different pick-up areas confuse people...so, just remember to pick up your bubble tea to sip while you are waiting for your food at the next counter. Vibe is clean, lots of wood - similar to all the other places in Brooklyn heights/cobble hill. Classic sandwich has pate, pork, carrots, radish, cilantro, sauce; bread is warm and soft, not too thick - which is nice. Vermicelli pork meat quality is a little low; but veggies, peanuts and mint/cilantro all seem fresh enough. I wrote a review on Hancos awhile back about their pho noodles and I'm back again to write another.. First let me start by saying, Hancos on Montague st is awesome!!! Their customer service is amazing, all the staff is really friendly and bubbly, and the food is fantastic! Awhile back I was told about the pho noodles here and I fell in love. I agree with many of the other reviewers that the food is pretty good, but the customer service, strange ordering process, and physical layout of the store can be frustrating. The food - the classic banh mi is great for settling a banh mi craving, so I'm glad this place is in the nabe. The bubble teas are fine - not the best I've had, but I like the variety on their menu. The spring rolls are good, but a little loosely wrapped for my taste. I would stay away from the noodle salads - I find them to be over full of low quality slightly overcooked noodles, and less of the other ingredients. Customer service can be brusque - the cashiers and the women who make the teas seem very put out at times to take your order. And many times, the woman who makes the tea just puts it on the counter without saying anything. The woman/women who work in the back area and disburse the food are definitely not very friendly. Or happy. But the thing that bothers me the most when I am in there is the long narrow layout which makes it difficult to find anywhere to stand and wait for either your food or drinks without being in the way of all foot traffic in the restaurant. The sandwiches have gone downhill in quality, but the real reason I'm writing this review is because of the terrible experience I had today. These just aren't good people and don't give them your money. I purchased a tea there and was charged 25 cents more than what it says on the menu. When I pointed this out (calmly, not crazily) after I noticed it on my receipt I was told it was "tax". Which isn't correct.. there is tax at the bottom of the receipt, this item was listed as costing 3.25 when it was supposed to be 3.00. 25 cents isn't a huge sum of money, but I was pretty pissed off that the people behind the counter were outright lying to me. Especially when I am sure that this is not the first time this has happened. When I said that was bullshit, and that the menu is wrong the girl finally, finally said, "Yes that is one possibility" . Seriously. They never once offered to pay me the 25 cents. There have been many customers who I'm sure have not looked at their receipts and have been overcharged. This is just wrong. I work in the customer service industry, and I deal with customers who are crazy and rude all the time. This wasn't what was happening here. They are greedy, inconsiderate, and have sub par sandwiches. I will never buy from Hanco's ever again because I don't want to support that kind of business. read more

VEGETARIAN BEWARE: MEAT STOCK USED IN VEGETARIAN SOUP! I'm a HUGE fan of Vietnamese food, love a good Bahn Mi, Pho, and Summer Roll as much as anyone. I'd give ONE STAR, but two I suppose is fair--yesterday my wife [a vegetarian] and I walked into Hanco's on Montague. I was really looking forward to some Pho with my wife, and asked "what's in the stock for the vegetarian Pho?" The woman behind the counter replied "the soup is made from chicken and beef, but the tofu is vegetarian." We tried to explain that if the soup is based on chicken and beef, it can't be called vegetarian! The worker still tried to reason that the "tofu is vegetarian" even though it's in meat stock--she just didn't get it. What Hanco's is doing is terribly misleading. To label something as "vegetarian" it must be free of any form of meat/fowl/fish. What their menu does would be the like offering a KOSHER SOUP, and making it with pork bones. For anyone that's a vegetarian, it's a serious matter, whether done for health or ethical reasons, or because of dietary restrictions. When eating out, there is trust between customer and restaurant, listing a meat dish as vegetarian is a breach of that trust. A vegetarian would NOT BE HAPPY if they discovered that they had just INGESTED MEAT! I hope that Hanco's corrects it's menu, and informs it's customers that meat stock is used in their vegetarian soups--or better yet, just make a meat free soup that vegetarians can enjoy. I'll gladly eat at Hanco's if they correct these misleading elements of their menu. read more

Been here several times. No objections and food decent but just not authentic Vietnamese food. I can tell they are Chinese. The broth doesn't have the beefy and those herbs typically used in pho broth, which is key. Service very typical Chinese, lukewarm but they did their job. I am from Seattle, yet Hanco's is the first place I have tried banh mi. I have been here twice, once I had shredded chicken banh mi w/Vietnamese iced coffee, the second time I had grilled chicken banh mi/w Iced chocolate. The shredded chicken was quite good, not the best thing I have ever eaten, but the combination of flavors and textures was interesting. Had a bit too much vegetables in proportion to the meat. I didn't like the grilled chicken so much. The iced coffee was INTENSE. I thought it would be more subtle, iced coffee with a bit of condensed milk sweetness. It was extremely strong and extremely sweet, I did not like it. The iced chocolate suffered similarly. The shredded chicken banh mi is fairly decent, but the rest...meh. read more

If you're craving a banh mi and you're in the area, come to Hanco's and forgo Nicky's Vietnamese Sandwiches, which is a few blocks away. I have had the pleasure of trying all of their banh mi, and they're always hot, fresh and delicious. With some extra Sriracha, a great banh mi is one of the best sandwiches one can have. Hanco's serves other Vietnamese dishes such as Pho and other rice/noodle entrees, but they aren't really anything to write home about. Not only are the taste and quality lacking, but the prices are steep for the portion and cuisine. The same should be said for their drink selection. I'm so accustomed to bubble tea specials of the B1G1 variety in Flushing and Chinatown that paying $4 for a subpar bubble tea really isn't on my list of things to do. If you really really are craving milk tea, then I suppose you would have no choice but to get one from Hanco's. As for the restaurant itself, it is really clean, quiet and mellow. Music is generally always playing at a low volume, which would be pleasant if it wasn't always korean pop (maybe they just always seem to play it when I'm there), and outdoor seating is available during the warmer days. Hanco's always comes through on my individual orders and on the larger orders I place for events at school as management is helpful and the customer service is very attentive. I was initially going to give Hanco's three stars based on their subpar entree selection and questionable prices, but the banh mi is really good. It's not just for bahn mi's, they have pho and noodle dishes too - fast food style, but NOT fast food. They even have great bubble tea! I highly recommend getting the pork bahn mi and make it spicy. It's not as spicy as you would expect so if you're up for a little kick, go for it. And don't forget to pair it up with a lychee bubble tea. While I am no expert on Vietnamese food, I can safely say I consumed one of the best bah mi's I've ever had. I ordered the grilled chicken bah mi [grilled chicken on a toasted baguette with cucumbers, carrots, and daikon radishes, $6.50] and chose the spicy sauce option [which really wasn't outrageously spicy]. The baguette was pleasantly crunchy but yet soft enough to take a bite without spraying bread all over the place. The grilled chicken was moist and very flavorful. The vegetables were a refreshing accent to the spice of the sauce. The sandwich was pretty big, and for the price, well worth it. I could probably live on the bah mi alone for the rest of time. I also had a passion fruit bubble tea [$4]. While the bubble tea was good, I've definitely had better at Teariffic in Chinatown. And when they say a "small" size, they really mean SMALL [despite my capitalization of the word]. The space is awkwardly laid out, a very narrow entrance way/hallway leading to the register and pick up counter [which you can easily miss]. They give you a number and you better clean the ear wax out of your ears otherwise you'll miss the quiet call of your lunch. Seating can be a challenge to find, especially during the lunch hour. I ended up sharing my table with student studying his mandarin language homework. After a film screening at LIU Brooklyn campus, the filmmaker, myself and 2 of her friends came here at the suggestion of one of her friends. The place has seating on both levels but even still it is not that big. We looked for a table upstairs but the ones downstairs promised more space. 3 ordered versions of the pho- one chicken broth with tofu, one chicken broth with shredded chicken, and one with beef. I ordered the shredded chicken sandwich or banh mi. You order at the counter and they call you from the back of the restaurant on the first floor by the receipt number. Most of us in our group didn't know this except the person who directed us here. We were at a table near the cashier by the front and I didn't hear my number being called. My sandwich had the pickled vegetables as is typical in a banh mi sandwich, The chicken was tender and well seasoned. However I didn't care for the mayonnaise. I think they put that in their for Americans who aren't used to Vietnamese cuisine. I don't think it went with the pickled vegetables. There was Sriracha and hoisin sauces on the table. So its nice to have a viet shop near work. I used to walk to their cobble hill store to get my sandwich and bubble tea fix. Well today I was feeling lazy and its raining and I'm pregnant I decided to do a delivery (which i never do). So i place my order, the guy calls me about 20 minutes saying he cannot find my office building. So i give him landmarks, right next to the Starbucks its the school. He goes Oh ok its the school, i'll be there in 2 minutes. Okay awesome. I wait and wait and wait. 15 minutes later I call the restaurant because the guy is not there and I say give him my cell phone number. Still waiting no call on either the office or cell. I walk downstairs to see if he was having trouble getting into the building i come back, there is a voicemail, i called your cell you never picked up I left. Hanco's is an upgrade over the typical milk tea/bubble tea joint. I've had their thai tea and their boba/milk tea and they were both decent. I'm actually leaning towards giving them a 4 star, since they get an extra bump for all the extras they offer here. There is a huge selection of different Vietnamese foods here. Although I think Chinese people run this joint, I do appreciate how they have Banh Mi, Pho, Pork Chops, and good appetizers. The banh mis are solid and the phos are alright(the broth doesn't have enough flavor in my opinion) The prices are cheap, though the service a bit slow, I wouldn't mind coming here for a quick lunch or afternoon snack. Pho, Bahn mis and boba...oh my! I really enjoy this Montague location. The place is bigger and nicer on the inside than the smith st location. The Pho bowls are huge. Way more than enough for one person. It's not super legit pho. You won't be getting tripe in your bowls....which I'm totally ok with, but it's delicious none the less. I would never discover about Hancos Bubble Tea & Vietnamese Sandwiches if I didn't yelp it on my phone. I would always get my bubble tea from popular locations like Ten Ren, Kung Fu, Coco, etc, and vietnamee sandwiches hotspots, such as Paris Baguette, etc. However, they are not located everywhere in NYC. On the top of my head, there are two Hancos location that I been to: Park Slope and Brooklyn Heights. I almost sure there are no bubble tea or decent vietnamese sandiwches at both locations. Hancos aren't the best place to get both items, but they are decent. Food and drink prices are definitely higher here than other locations I been to. If you coming here for the first time, try the taro bubble tea and classic vietnamese sandwich. It was my first order at Hancos and it was definitely a great choice. The bubbles were coated with sweetness and you were able to taste the taro in the drink, which is a plus. The vietnamese sandwich was satisfying. Ingredients were distributed fairly and the meat was tasty. Employees were friendly, but the big downside that I would have to say is the price. The prices don't justify the food portions. There are a lot of locations at Manhattan Chinatown and Brooklyn Chinatown (8th Ave) that has a really good variety of bubble teas and vietnamese sandwiches that are significantly cheaper.
