You'll find Hanco's just 3 or so blocks from the water/greenway path in the AHHdorable cobble hill area. Back in my county, we're severely deprived of bubble tea goodness. Therefore, anytime I'm outside of Nassau and in close proximity to a store or restaurant that serves it, I'm inclined to walk in. Thai iced milk tea was uplifting in both taste and appearance as it was pleasantly orange and sweet. The tapioca pearls could have been a little softer. Overall, it was a swell treat, even if I've had better. Hanco's isn't solely limited to bubble tea as it serves an assortment of Vietnamese sandwiches and treats. Delicious bahm mi sandwiches, the pork and the tofu ones are really good. The rice dishes are also good, it will be better if they add pickled veggies to it. The salad are on the smaller but good if you are looking for something light and unfiling. Their pho can used some upgrades but overall pretty good. Prices are a bit higher compared to other viet places in chinatown, especially after they last hike. One of the best places for viet food in the area since options are limited. read more

Disappointed. I may be trekking back to the Hanco's Bergen Street location, but I'll try Montague in another week or two just in case my experience was opening day jitters. It would have been ok, had they not messed up my order (which they did, leaving me without soup for one of the two pho orders). It would have been ok even though they list delivery on their menus that they don't yet have delivery. It would have been ok that they don't accept my Hanco's frequent Bubble Tea card (happily stamped by the Bergen St. Hanco's) What's not ok is the bubble tea tastes like dishwater. A real shame, since IMHO the Bergen Street location serves the best in the City (including compared to Chinatown). It seems to be the same powder, just mixed with about 3x more water. Yuk. The tapioca balls were good. What's not ok is the pho broth is uninspired. The chicken pho reminded me of a can of College Inn. What's not ok is the noodles are clumpy and clearly pre-packaged in a square and then dropped into the Styrofoam box. The pork for the soup was tasty and they take credit cards (which the Bergen Street location does not). I did not try the Bahn Mi, but will when I go back in a week or so with my fingers crossed. *heavy sign* Hopefully the owner will read this and get a few of his high quality people from the Bergen Street location over to Montague for some intense training. I came here for lunch with friends. Any Asian cuisine in the area is rare and this place was recommended as a decent place for Vietnamese. This spot is super cozy and seems to be quite popular. We got in around lunch time so it was packed, mostly for take out orders. We decided to stay and grabbed a table upstairs. I ordered a Thai iced tea and a salad with grilled pork. The Thai iced tea was sweeter than I'm used to and it kept me on a sugar high for the rest of the day. The salad was pretty good, fresh veggies and the the pork was grilled just right. A pretty satisfying meal and I was full well into dinner time. My friends ordered a Vietnamese chicken sandwich and pho. The bowl of pho was ginormous and it looked like it was pretty good. Hanco's is one of my go to places for carry out or delivery. The food is always consistent and prepared quickly. I've tried a variety of foods here. My go to is usually Pork Vermicelli noodles but the Banh Mi and Pho is also very good. Fried spring rolls are among my favorites. The restaurant may be small and narrow, but there is good amount of small tables around considering the size. I stopped by during lunch to pick up food and ordered a classic Vietnamese banh mi with Thai ice tea. The banh mi was pretty good. Bread was toasty. Meats were adequate enough. However, I wasn't sure if I was feeling the ground beef (sloppy joe) type in my banh mi. Did not taste the pate if there was any. The Thai ice tea was on the sweeter side. Regardless, I thought the meal was tasty. I don't think I would get Pho here as it's more of a sandwich/bubble tea joint than a noodle shop. Making Pho needs TLC. This place is more grab and go. Well, they had the ultimate cilantro hater (ME) convinced. I love their shredded chicken sandwich with a passion. This place is, at its core, pretty no-frill and easygoing, and the prices justify that. But there is a layer of hipness overcasting that which you can see by the people working there and serving your food, etc. It takes some time to get your order (hence the four-star rating), but it's worth it, and their upstair seats are pretty damn cozy. How many restaurants like this still have sunshine coming into every single table? All I had was the shredded chicken sandwich and unsweetened iced black tea. Obviously, it wasn't a specialty tea so there's not much else to it, but the sandwich was a delight. The chicken was warm and tasty, and the sour taste of radish and carrot further enhances that - a must try. I had the cilantro removed but my friend did not - and even I liked it! This is a pretty impressive feat if you know how much I despise cilantro. I went on a Monday noon and it had its fair share of business (mostly takeouts) but I can imagine all the seats filling up on weekends. Wow okay where to begin. I really wanted to love this place because I heard it was supposed to be good. Maybe their bubble tea is good, but their pho definitely is not. I probably won't even come back to try their bubble tea since Vivi's is nearby and makes better food anyway. This place was supremely underwhelming. The pho tasted bland, which was surprising since it seems like it'd be a hard dish to mess up. The entire set-up of the place is odd. You order in the front, but they only make bubble tea there. If you order food it's towards the back and the waiting area is tiny (if they were busy, it'd be really annoying to wait around). They call your order and you go back to the front to eat or in a tiny upstairs area. FYI the sitting area is really tiny, so don't come here with more than 4 people--they're just not suited for dining in. Even though I was one of only 2 customers, there was at least a 15 minute wait, but maybe they had some online orders they were making. All this could easily be forgiven if the pho was decent, but it just was not!! It was so lacking in any flavor, even with a lime and sriracha sauce, it was just tasteless. If I could variegate Hanco's star rating for different food service elements, it would be: - 4 stars for food, - 3 stars for cost, - 2 stars for service, and (if I may be so persnickety) -1 star for the confusing layout The food here is bomb, no doubt about it. I've ordered different things from their menu over the past couple of months and have never been disappointed with the taste. My personal favorite is the banh mi sandwich which features crusty bread, savory fillings such as meats, tofu, or vegetarian meats, and customer-customizable levels of spice. "Spicy", by the way, will mean that fresh jalapeño slices will be scattered throughout the sandwich, so beware (also - vegans, strict vegetarians, and lactose-intolerant folks, remember to ask them to omit the butter and mayo). On hungrier days, I've also ordered the more filling vermicelli salads and the rice entrees, which allow you the same meat/soy toppings atop a bed of carbs. The entrees will come with a small container of broth and a smaller container of Sriracha that you pour and slather over your meal; they are the Asian cherries on your proverbial sundae. I find that I always cringe a little every time I pay for my orders because it feels a little overpriced for what I'm getting. The banh mis, which are a little longer than my hand, are - with tax - are 7 and change. The menu is a little confusing when it comes to the entrees because the salads or over-rice dishes have one price, but the proteins are considered an add-on (which confuses me...who would order a bowl of plain rice or noodles?) that will run you closer to a total of 9 or 10 bucks. Service is brusque and curt, perhaps even discourteous if you're someone who takes too long or places a complicated order. Expect no smiles or invitations to ask questions - the vibe from the counter has always been 'get in, pay, and get out'. The ambiance provides a stark contrast, especially upstairs where the skylight and rear windows allow the small eating space some level of casualness, but the people who work here have all the social warmth of a piece of sandpaper. It gets pretty busy here during the lunch hour, especially since they're handling both in-person and seamless orders, so expect to wait about 7-10 minutes for your food. Some mention has already been made here about the confusing pickup protocol. In short, drinks are picked up at the front bar, and food is in the back, down a short flight of steps. The unsmiling woman (who's surprised?) will call your number, hand you your food, and send you on your way. I tell you these things because they didn't tell me when I first came here, which meant I was stupidly waiting by the cash register for some time. I think Hanco's has responded to that oft-repeated complaint by posting some printed signs with arrows, but I hope that helps just the same. read more

I had been to other Hanco's before but this one definitely looked a lot nicer, modern decor and an organized menu. I had to wait a while for my sandwich, but they apologized. I liked that you could order a version of the Vietnamese sandwich without the pate. I got the pork and it was tasty. You can also choose the spiciness and the sauce that went with it was really good. I felt like the inside of the sandwich was unevenly distributed, with all the veggies on one side and the meat on the other, making it nearly impossible to get it all in one taste. The pork wasn't the best quality, a little fatty but then again the sandwich was only $6. The five stars is for the combination of having pretty good food and level of respect I have for the management. I had a shitty experience at Hanco's a few weeks ago, and the manager addressed my complaints so I decided to go back and give it another shot. I immediately noticed that my complaints regarding lack of instruction as to how to pick up the food were acknowledged as there were signs on the register and the wall that said food pick-up is in the back. Thumbs up for that little improvement. I came in and ordered a classic sandwich, vegetarian vermicelli, beef pho, an original bubble tea, and fried spring rolls (which for some reason were not on the menu above the register but definitely should be because they taste amazing). The chicken and mushroom spring rolls, again, were amazing. They satisfied my need for something a little greasy but not too out of control. I took a bite out my boyfriends sandwich and it was super duper good! The bread was crisp on the outside and soft on the inside, it was on par with the sandwiches I've had at Saigon Shack. That was my favorite part of the meal, it was my boyfriend's too because he devoured the rest of it in an instant. We didn't get to eat our vermicelli or pho there because we were pretty full after the sandwich and spring rolls, but we ordered both noodles during our last visit and loved it. So we took it to go and I'm sure we will be thoroughly enjoying eating them later as a midnight meal. Food is consistently good here, bubble teas are good too, the prices are pretty reasonable at around $3 for bubble tea, $5 for the spring rolls, $8 for the noodle dishes and $6 for the sandwich. Hanco's is probably the best place in the neighborhood to get comfort Viet food, and management takes customer service concerns very seriously so any bad experiences will probably be limited to one and done. I'm writing this on behalf of my wife who is too sick to sit at the computer. We both feel this review should be shared right away. My wife and I have been to Hanco's numerous times over the past year or so, ignoring the substandard customer service because the food for the price was a good value. However, we will never go back to Hanco's again after what happened today. My wife and I always order the vegetarian pork sandwiches, my wife because she doesn't eat meat. This afternoon I ordered two vegetarian pork sandwiches and "paid" for the sandwiches with two punch cards, one from an accumulation of visits and one from our previous visit when they forgot to put in our order. On that previous visit, the woman at the register seemed confused with the concept of compensating a customer for poor customer service, which didn't surprise me given that the women behind the counter typically appear more interested in joking with each other than delivering customer service. After receiving our sandwiches today, my wife and I started eating and we both noticed that the seitan was chewier than usual. I looked at the sandwich and thought that the seitan looked strange and took it back to the counter to ask if it was a vegetarian pork sandwich. It was not. Instead, the woman who took the order put down two grilled pork sandwiches because, you know, when you are not paying attention to what customers are saying then "grilled" can sound and awful lot like "vegetarian". When I brought the matter to the attention of the woman at the register, her first reaction was to laugh. My wife had not eaten meat in 26 years so I guess that's where the humor comes from. When the woman's colleague asked what was going on, the woman at the register told her and the colleague also laughed. Evidently the motto at Hanco's is "The customer is always to be mocked." After I asked for satisfaction for the woman's mistake, she finally agreed to stamp two cards for two free sandwiches (she couldn't give refunds), although this compensation is inadequate as my wife and I will not eat there again. I have not eaten at any Hanco's locations beside the Montague Street location in Brooklyn Heights so I can't say if inattention to customer service is a regular feature of the chain. What I can state without reservation is that the customer service is regularly poor at the Montague Street location and making a mistake of this magnitude, a mistake that caused my wife to become ill, and then finding it amusing is just one more example of how poorly customers are treated. Again, we will never eat at Hanco's and we urge others who place value on being treated well to also avoid Hanco's. read more

I have to say that the food and the bubble tea from Hanco's are alright. But honestly, the customer service is just horrible. I have been to Hanco's about five times now, by myself or with different co-workers, and we are just horrified but how rude those cashiers are. They treat you like they are doing you a huge favor to talk to you, and rush the order as much as they can. The business has this system that you need to go to the back and get your order, but nobody tells you that from the beginning. So when you stand there, or ask if we should sit down, they just roll their eyes and say in a very rude way: "This is a self-service place." The other day another one told me: "Ask in the back - It's not my job to talk to you." This is New York and I can get better Vietnamese food in so many places; my office crew and I will not spend our money with rude people, we can go somewhere else. UPDATE: Hanco changed its staff! I was invited to go back and had a much better experience with customer service. Food was good as usual, and I'll be visiting more often. :) read more

Around $9.00 for a Viet sandwich I would prefer another location for food but you have to keep in mind this is Brooklyn Heights; rent is $$$. The only reason why I say this is not authentic because the meat they use is more of a Chinese style cooked meat and they only use Mayo as a dressing compared to using a pork liver Pate.
