I placed an order on DoorDash for two rolls from Hanabi Sushi. The DoorDash delivery was fine, and this review is not against the dasher or DoorDash at all. This 1 star is review is regarding the two rolls I received from Hanabi. The rolls tasted okay at best. What was not okay at all is that I found plastic wrap in both of my rolls. I was chewing on my roll pieces and was wondering why something was not breaking down. I even tried to swallow my pieces too, and almost choked. So I decided to pull out the object from my mouth and was horrified when I realized it was plastic wrap. And it wasn't just small pieces of plastic wrap, these bits that came from my mouth were LARGE. I have attached photos of what I discovered below. I am still working my way through the two rolls as I'm writing this review, but this is totally unacceptable. I'm pretty sure I swallowed plastic at this point too. I shouldn't be worried about foreign objects in my food, and I shouldn't even have to carefully inspect each piece of sushi before I eat it! This is a safety hazard!! After going several other local places we decided to venture out in search of good rolls with good service and Hanabi came to the rescue! We liked it so much we came back two more times that's same week! Somehow I only managed to get one photo of their Spider Roll! This was on the special menu with 2 rolls for $18.99!! Great price and these are some nice sized rolls!! Pretty sure we will be here every week! I recommend their Rainbow Roll and next time I'll try to get a pic before I devour it! So I've been coming to this place since they opened back in the early 2000s! I must of been a preteen when they first opened. And I must say that their food has not changed one bit. I ordered their combo sashimi plate which gave you about 6 different pieces of thick cuts of fish. The fish was super fresh and the rice was cooked just right! I always have a pleasant food experience when I order from here. I would recommend this place to whomever is in Martinez and is in need of a Japanese cuisine fix! Even though I had sashimi today doesn't mean I've never had their bento boxes! They are also super yummy and portions are bigger than most places I've been to. The other two- the rolls fall apart, the rice is mushy, over sauced, always inconsistent and to top it off, the Mexican sushi maker is absolutely one of the rudest persons I've ever encountered in a restaurant, and talks horribly about his customers in Spanish while you are literally sitting in front of him. We came here for dinner at Saturday night, but we had a really unpleasant experience! It was hard to get the staffs attention, we needed to wait for along time before they noticed us. But what was the most unbelievable thing happened to us was the service charge. They did not told us there would be a service charge included in the total price when we sat down, and they did not told us there was a service charge when we got the bill. We nearly double tipping them. When we asked them why we were not told ahead of the time, and there was no sign that said we would be charge with service fee mandatorily, one of the staff told us that the( substitutions are extra charge means we had to paid the service charge!) I've been working by Hanabi for a number of years now and have only been here twice which after my last experience I see was doing myself a disservice! Came for lunch with two friends and we got the bento boxes you're able to chose from a list what you want in your box and it comes with soup and salad it was so good!! I was so happy with my experience i came back and got some sushi I got the tornado roll (i believe that's what it is) and the titanic roll and OMG the titanic roll is absolutely delicious!! I've gotten it to-go 3 times since then! Safe to say I might be addicted to this roll it was crab and the sauce and it's just so good!! Customer had to remind rude waitress that I did not want to be double charged a service fee that this establishment chooses to charge certain parties. Only customers that rude waitresses pick are charge this. (Allegedly) 10. Food falling apart while you are trying to take a bite. 11. If you like getting charged a service fee for just eating there. FYI THEY SELL RETURNED FOOD. I placed an order for pick up over the phone and ordered the spicy salmon bowl. When I got home and opened it up I saw that they had given me a salmon special roll (also ordered bbq combo bento & salmon love roll). I called to let them know that they gave me the wrong order and the lady on the phone said that I ordered the spicy salmon special I corrected her and told her no we ordered the spicy salmon bowl. After about five minutes of arguing with her over her mistake, she told me that they would make me one and I can go back to the restaurant and pick it up. I arrived at the restaurant and she tried to charge me $18 for a mistake she made. She told me that because I didn't bring the wrong roll they made she wasn't able to give me the original meal I ordered for free. I asked her why do you need the roll back, are you going to sell it?and she replied YES we would resell that. After I told her that's repulsive and I couldn't believe she said that they would resell the roll, she finally threw chopsticks and soy sauce in the bag and basically threw the bag at me. We've been going to Hanabi for over 20 years but will never be returning again based on the fact that they sell returned food. Not to mention, The remainder of our meal was awful. The beef in the barbecue combo was like beef jerky and the chicken was fatty and covered and pepper. We love this place! The food is always good and fresh! I see a lot of reviews giving 1 star because service is bad, but if you have worked in the service industry you would understand. These people who are waiting tables aren't just servers, they are doing so much more. I came into this place blind (having served tables for years) and my server wasn't super attentive but I could see how much she was doing in the back of the house, and honestly it was impressive. They are doing things that food runners or bussers should have been doing, but obviously this place is family run and they don't have those extra workers. Solid 3.5 stars. Had a good meal the tempura were extra crispy and the fish was fresh. My daughters bento box with Ton Katsu looked real good and I tried the fried pork it was crispy and juicy. Sushi is a hit or miss. Don't think about coming here if you have time constraints or a short lunch period. If you want poor customer service this is the place for you! The cooks in the back and the guys who make the sushi are great. There are two waitresses (I wish I knew their names - but not are kind of heavy set, middle aged, both light skinned Asian, one with brassy/brown long hair and the other has short black hair) who are rude and have very poor customer service. One had the nerve to ask why we didn't tip her. Well, ma'am, you took about an hour to bring our lunch (mind you, there were only 3 other customers - whom got their food before us when we were there first), you forgot my soda and got mad when I asked you to remove it off the bill, you got an attitude and rolled your eyes when we asked for Sriracha, it is also very clear that you are talking SHIT to each other when we ask for napkins or sauce and when you were asked for a to-go box because you took FOREVER, you tossed it on the table and walked away as if it was a problem to ask. All the other wait staff are nice and lovely, but these two broads don't need to be in the restaurant business. There has been many situations with these two broads regarding missing to go items and messing up on your order. God forbid you ask for a napkin or chop sticks or sriracha or soy sauce because they will give you an attitude or roll their eyes at you then talk shit in their language so you don't know what they are saying. Please take your hard earned money some where else because no one deserves to be treated this way. The owner needs to fire their asses or put them in customer service training. I also think the Health Department needs to take a trip to the restaurant because there were gnats in their bottles of soy sauce (hence why we asked for other soy sauce). Really a two and a half star experience but would rather round up to three than down to two. Easy to find in a strip mall with plenty of parking. We arrived after the lunch rush so were seated right away. Our waitress quickly brought menus and took our drink order. since it was our first time there we needed time to peruse the very large menu. We settled on 4 rolls, Ninja, Godzilla, Tempura, ​and San Francisco, which we're on special 2 for $15.99. My daughter also ordered a Tempura Handroll at​​ $4.50. The rolls seemed to be full-sized​ not "mini versions sometimes served at lunch. I have s couple of ​dietary restrictions the main being no raw fish so I really enjoy coming to California where I can have Maki made with real crab and there is no shaming when I don't order raw items. The Ninja roll ​and Godzilla roll are both "raw rolls" that are tempured and deep-fried​. I had had a Ninja roll at another sushi place which was ​inside out with the hamachi​ on the outside cooking it, making it safe for me to eat. This one had the Hamachi on the inside. I took the first piece and realized my mistake. Being the end slice the hamachi was mostly cooked, but the rice was stone-cold​ inside, ruining it for me. I snagged an end slice of the Godzilla Deep fried spicy tuna roll hoping for another "cooked " bite and same thing, cold rice. Honestly, if I want cold rice I can buy it at the supermarket in Hawaii. It's bad enough that I can't have raw fish, but cold rice too? Maybe they premake the rolls figuring the frying will heat the whole thing but it didn't. I pressed on with the Tempura roll, basically,​​ a California roll with a tempura​ shrimp rolled in. Once again the rice was cold and the tempura, stone-cold​, also it was so large and loosely​ rolled there​ was no picking it up without it falling to pieces, which was just as well because it wouldn't​ fit in my mouth whole anyway. Adding​ insult to injury the crab was not crab, it was surimi. California is so full of consumer regulations, I would think you couldn't sell a "crab flavored fish product" as a crab. Oh well, I'm used to the fake stuff. Last but not least was the San Francisco roll which was a Tempura California​ roll with cream cheese inside. I've never had a roll with Cream cheese inside and I have to admit it was interesting and maybe because they needed the cheese to melt, it didn't taste like they premade it and kept it on ice prior to cooking. read more

Popped in for an impromptu dinner with a friend and we were underwhelmed to say the least. The venue is quite quaint and compact. Not really worth dining in, but maybe in summer months you can enjoy the outdoor seating provided. I asked for a jalapeno addition IN my roll and received mexican style jalapenos sprinkled on top of my roll... not quite the asian experience I was going for.
