Well, we used to love this place. Not the most pleasant environment but food was amazing. Not anymore. We went tonight and ordered the same three dishes we always ordered: Dan Dan Noodels, Fish Dry Pot, and Cumin Lamb. All three dishes looked and tasted different than they did before. The noodles had a watery sauce. We ordered Mild, and fish and lamb came wth a TON of pepper. So spicy. There was a ton of pepper and onion and very little meat or anything else. This Han Dynasty just makes me sad. This is the second time I've eaten there, because the first experience was a few years ago and I wanted to give it another try. Big mistake! The food was horrible again. Every other location is a million times better. The dan dan noodles do not taste ANYTHING like what the "real" don don noodles should taste like, there is no flavor to the food and everything is sloppily thrown together. They need to have a visit to the other locations such as Cherry Hill and Philly, or bring in a new chef. I'm a regular at this place, typically going back at least once a month. Food quality is excellent much better than typical Americanized Chinese places in the area. My friends who like hot food items say even the "10" scale hot items are not that hot for them. Order from the authentic menu, not the American style Chinese menu for the best tasting dishes. Biggest issue they always have is customer service and speed. Food comes out quick but good luck getting a waiter to fill your water glass or get other needed items after the initial order. It's very Asian style service which means efficient but limited customer service niceties, they want you in and out. read more

We have been here a few times before on New Years Eve and enjoyed the food and service was fine. But this NYE the service was unacceptable. We weren't waited on for 10 minutes. Then my son got his meal and we waited for the rest. After about 15 minutes we were told the others would be hurried up. 15 minutes later only after flagging a waiter down, did my other sons meal came. By then my first son was done eating his meal. My wife and I finall got our meals 5-10 mins later. No apology and nothing adjusted on the check. Put a damper on our NYE tradition. read more

I went here based on reviews from people I know and boy I am glad I did. Their food was the best and most flavorful chinese I have had in years, if not ever! We ordered the wontons in chili oil since I heard great things about them and the chili oil was perfect- spicy but not overwhelmingly. I then got the crispy rice style chicken and my husband got the garlic sauce style chicken. Both were delicious I would have to say mine was better- it was in a semi sweet but delicate sauce that was bursting with flavor. Hard to explain but definitely worth the try. The only spot we can get something a little bit different than the regular old Americanized Chinese food. Little bit more money but we keep going back. Also I like things spicy. This is my favorite restaurant in West Chester. Every single dish I have ordered here turns out great. Some of my favorites: Snow pea leaves: something people new to authentic Chinese food do not order, but they should! Great flavor and texture. Every single person I introduced to snow pea leaves loved it;) Tea smoked duck: next to Pecking duck, my second favorite duck dish. The smoked flavor is not overpowering. You get a large well cut bird. Great taste and value for the price. Spicy Hunan chicken: very spicy, but not to the extreme. Have some white rice and cold water ready to put out the burning in your mouth. The burning has a numbing side to it, and you will want to take bite after bite. Try it yourself to see what I mean. Caution: you are not expected to eat the spice (e.g. Red peppers and star spice the dish is served with);) I have tried to think of downsides to this restaurant but just can't. The food is decent, but the service, as many on here have mentioned, was disappointing. I brought some international high school students to the restaurant, and because the restaurant was unwilling to split a check, my students and I ended up wandering around the plaza at night looking for an ATM (none open at that time of evening.) Even after explaining the situation and apologizing for the inconvenience, the tone of the management was very unforgiving and unhelpful with trying to solve the dilemma. (Like pointing us to the next closest ATM.) Additionally, the service was slow and it was hard to get the servers' attention. I often felt like we were just being processed through. It was a bummer because the dishes were fairly good, and I think the restaurant could actually be really great with a slightly different energy re: the service. read more

The food here was pretty good, but omg their orange chicken. Best orange chicken I've ever had, it's on the Americanized part of the menu (last page). The chicken was definitely fresh and the outside was baked to perfection. It was so incredibly crispy, and the chicken was tender inside-in other words, the perfect orange chicken dish. Fair warning, when you get the house fried rice, it'll be cooked with no soy sauce (so healthier) vs the beef fried rice, which makes it heavier. I would come again for sure. read more

As others have said, we picked up Han Dynasty take out for dinner. Had House Special Lo Mein, sweet and sour chicken, pork egg roll and vegetable egg roll. We have picked up take out for several years and it has been very good on every occasion. NOT THE SAME FOOD! Lo Mein had no flavor and very little substance (meat, shrimp, etc.) and was primarily just noodles and they had little to no flavor. Sweet and Sour Chicken. Was 5 small strips and a small piece of chicken. Instead of being smothered in some cooked vegetables, there was a 3/8 to 1/2 inch of uncooked onion, pepper and carrots, mostly uncooked, not el dente, but uncooked. Cost $13.95. And, no significant flavor in any of it. The pork egg roll and vegetable spring type egg roll were adequate but once again, had no significant flavor. This is a 180 degree flip from what it was during and before Covid. Too bad, as the chain is noted for it's excellent food, but not at all any more at this location in Exton. Note, this is the first review I have felt obligated to prepare and share. Have never submitted one other than a small survey as sent by some after you eat there and all have been positive, even if not perfect. Sorry to see it go. read more

Late one rainy night on a business trip, my associate and I found this place in a Pennsylvania strip mall. Somewhat surprised by the banner over the door that announced it was one of CNN's "top fifty" Chinese restaurants, our expectations were high. I won't say we were disappointed. The food was good, the hostess (probably NOT Mrs. Han, but who knows?) was helpful and suggested menu choices. We ordered dumplings as an appetizer, I had Hot and Sour Soup, Chicken with Black Bean Sauce and my associate ordered Dry Pot beef. We ate family style, which means we shared. Given that so many strip mall Chinese restaurants/take-out places are average or so-so, I give Han Dynasty a better-than-average rating. But the decor and the food, while good enough to warrant a return trip, should my travels bring me back to Exton, don't put me in league with CNN. Top 50? Mmmm, meh. read more

Some dishes are spicy, but not all of them. Make sure you check out the spice level depending on your preference. If you don't like spicy food, order the Three Cup Chicken. This is the perfect Chinese restaurant in my opinion. The food is made to order and the service is very attentive. The menu clearly indicates the degree of spice in each dish, and they can adapt it to your request. I am unable to avoid ordering the Dan Dan noodles whenever I dine here. The level of spice is perfect - not too spicy and not too bland. On a whim, I tried the Chef Special Dragon meatballs. OMG!!! They are huge yet light as a cloud. They have a gentle hint of ginger and green onion and are full of balanced flavors. The scallion pancakes are crispy perfection​ on a plate. It's easy to get into a rut with so many incredible dishes here, and I have to force myself to keep trying new items. I have yet to be disappointed by the food here. I love the food (5 STARS) , But I can't deal with the service (1 Star) It's getting out of hand. Every staff there is doing 20 different jobs (from Hostess to Cashier, to Waitress to Cleaning, to serving). We have to keep getting the Waitress attention, for ordering, for water, for the check and other stuff. Need to have a better system for this. Some waited 20 minutes to order, some waited 10 minutes. Food came in less than 10 minutes. I ordered 7 dishes, Love all of them From Dan Dan Mien, to Spicy oil Cucumber Cumin Lamb, Chef's Special Hot Fish Tofu dish, Pea Leaves in Garlic. Had children with me so We ordered Chicken with Broccoli (non spicy and fresh). And Beef Noodle soup (taiwanese style) was tasty. I wish I can give them 5 stars... As a food geek who has a pathological hatred of typical Americanized Chinese food, I am merciless in reviewing Chinese restaurants. Well, this place left me nothing to complain about. The food we ordered off the Authentic menu was excellent. Even the General Tso's Chicken that my friend's wife ordered was so much better than usual, I actually tried it. I still wouldn't order it myself, but it was fantastic compared to typical General Tso's. This resto passed a test which almost all Chinese places that serve traditional authentic dishes fail: Dan Dan Noodles. Traditional Dan Dan Noodles do not have any sesame paste or peanut sauce on them, but that's how they're always prepared here in the U.S. Not at Han Dynasty. I couldn't believe it when they put the dish on the table. If you want REAL Chinese food, expertly prepared, go here. Just amazing. read more

We have been dining and getting takeout from this location for years. We loved it. But it is slowly going downhill since the owner (the son and the mother) are not attending this location any more. Not only are the prices sneaking up but the quantity is going the opposite, which is ok for me because nothing is cheap these days and less portion is healthy and helps to lose weight, right? Problem is, the quality of the food and service are really slipping now as well. And the dishes are not that as authentic as before. The father, another owner, once in a while attends this location now. He is not good at business, I guess, and trying to "help" make the situation worse. One time, one of my takeout dishes was charged $4 dollar more than the menu price. No big deal, only $4. Everyone makes mistakes. I didn't say anything. Another time, I paid cash and the father lied to me that paying cash will not be getting any receipt in return, which was never the case when the son and mother were here, whose bills were always accurate, clear and fair. Today, we ordered Kongpao Chicken, which tasted very bitter and salty, and super SMOKY, inedible. Guess what the reason is? Kongpao Chicken is deep fried dish. I bet anything they recooked/re-deep-fried the leftover meat and sold to us. Seriously? Was the leftover served or not served to other customer before they recooked it again and tossed to us? Disgusting. Either that or it was not chicken and some other type of creature. The "chicken", even the big pieces taste like crumpled up paper. It was totally uneatable. Of course it ended up in the trash can. For many years, we took friends there and recommend to others about this place. Now I would say: don't bother. read more

One reason it couldn't get much better is that Han is right there with you, helping you by suggesting things that are the most popular or finding out what you really like! He is so personable that I stayed quite a bit longer than I would have for a normal lunch. I ate there today, since I was in the area. I was almost the only diner since it was around three pm. The appetizer I had for lunch consisted of eight dumplings in chili oil. (Some of the most tender dumplings I've had.) Next was the lamb in dry pot, brought to the table still simmering. Perfectly tender, with thin slices of ginger and plenty of mushrooms and peppers. I took home the cold sliced beef and tripe in hot sauce, which I just now sampled a bit of. Again, tender and medium level of heat. Two other items were taken home: Shredded chicken in hot sesame sauce (cold and succulent) and the pea leaves with minced garlic (my wife's fave). I can't wait to go back; since I no longer live in Philly, I don't have any authentic places like this close by. Only in Chinatown (Philly or NYC) have I had anything that was this good, in our general area. I haven't been to the Exton location, but have taken note that the chef has a different style. This was one of the best Chinese food I've had in USA. All dishes are very tasty and flavorful. I've had Chinese food in China and some were not good so I wouldn't say this or that was authentic but if you like spicy Chinese food, you are in for the treat! I rarely find a place for good eggplant dish and Han Dynasty does excellent job. I don't even like Eggplant. Get garlic eggplant or something like that.. All beef, lamb and seafood dishes were excellent. So pick anything you like. Highly recommended. read more

I heard great things about this place from co-workers, so I went and take out for lunch there. It did not live up to expectation. 1. I found a fly in my food. I was half way through my meal at my desk and I saw a black blob, that did not belong there. When I looked closer, there were wings on it. I couldn't bring myself to finish the other half. I was going to call them to complain but then realized that I don't want anything from there because I don't trust that their place is sanitary, so I threw out the rest of it and ate the rice only. (I would have taken a pic of it and post it here but I forgot my phone today) 2. I got pork with bean curd and it was so-so. I'm not a big fan of cooking but I could make a better pork with bean curd than what I got from Han Dynasty. I was hoping to find a place that makes good, authentic Chinese food, close by to me and outside of NYC and Philadelphia, but it looks like my search will continue. I definitely will not be going back there and would not recommend this place to any of my friends and co-workers, who are looking for good Chinese food. 2017 update There was a dramatic shift in quality and quantity of the food. I guess it's success in NYC and Philly may have moved the good chefs there . The quality and portion sizes have gone done. This place is amazing every time. My only thought is it is better with more people because you can try more dishes hahaha. The last time I went to this place, I went with 2 good friends and we had a veggie dish, that unfortunately probably would have been very good in other circumstances. However, we tasted it after having the "water cooked fish", which is one of their specialities and the coconut shrimp. Both these dishes totally knocked our socks clean off. The fish was delicate and very spicy (we asked for low spice hahaha); we had decided to try it despite the fact that it was spicy. The results: let's just say we planned to have it every time we go back before we had left the restaurant. The coconut/ mayonaisse sauce on the shrimp was sweet and flavorful. I have to admit that despite being Chinese, I do love this more Americanized dish. The candied walnuts are delicious and a perfect accent to this dish. Tonight I went again with 3 other friends. We had the same 2 dishes mentioned above (minus the veggie dish), and they were still as amazing as before. Not sure if my friends enjoyed the coconut shrimp dish as much as I did, but oh well, what can I say? More for me!!! hahaha We also ordered an eggplant dish, which was delicious. We also had the beef scallion dish which was deliciously seasoned and cooked as well. I think the "water cooked fish" dish was still the hit of the evening. This place has never disappointed. I have the distinction of having my sister and brother-in-law be the only people ever to have their wedding banquet here. It was amazing and widely hailed. This was the Chinese food that I have been craving for a long time :-) Exton, oh Exton, how I love you so much more than my own hometown, almost solely because you have a Han Dynasty, one of its original (or original) locations, I may add! I think that it is fair to say that all of the food is worth trying. And don't worry because there is plenty of rice to simmer down your super hot mouth! I have yet to have soup at any Han Dynasty, though it sounds intuitive to have something like that during the meal -- haha, unless the soup is super RED in color! I even ate in one of the private rooms, and so you know what that meant -- more plates of food to pass around! read more

We have wanted to go to Han Dynasty since we first learned about the premise: offer the Americanized version of Chinese 'cuisine' like every other takeout place, juxtaposed against five times as many "traditional" choices. The Royersford location is closer to us but we were starving in Exton on a Friday night and every place was packed which is really the craziest part of the review because Han was less than half full and ultimately so much more satisfying than all of the chains with the 45 minute waits. We had actually sworn off Chinese food in lieu of great Thai and Indian spots near us, because the food is so bland, unhealthy and the places almost all seem less than immaculate. Han Dynasty in Exton could improve the atmosphere, but you can overlook a lot with food this good. You must order from the traditional menu and experience so much more complexity and flavor than any other suburban choice in any category. All you really need to know about Han Dynasty is that half of the patrons are Chinese. Have you every seen a Chinese customer at your local Chinese, strip mall take out? As an appetizer we ordered Shredded Pork with Mushroom Soup which was a great diversion from Americanized wonton, egg drop or hot & sour (which I could live on if prepared correctly). This soup however was extremely flavorful utilizing few ingredients indicating that simple creativity is paramount to the chef that created this interesting menu. For entrees we shared (portions are ample) flounder in dry pot, three cup chicken and salted fish fried rice. All three were excellent but the flounder, sauteed tableside in a super spicy chili oil, was incredible. My buzzing tongue and I were still recalling it fondly the next day. The traditional ingredients that comprised this sautee all complimented the fish and were like nothing you get in any Americanized mixture. Bell peppers, dacon and several unique mushrooms were all zinged with chili and Chinese peppercorns and made the fish dish the best I have ever eaten at a suburban strip mall- hands down. My wife raved about the three cup chicken so we asked our waiter, who might have been a little smoother and a little more attentive, about the name. It arrives to the table in a small cast iron pot which it has apparently cooked in with three cups of three different sauces- wine, soy and sesame... I guess we would know this as it's a pretty common traditional dish but we have been deprived for so long. It's safe to say that we will never order from another Americanized Chinese place and will frequent all three Han Dynasty locations whenever possible. A question though- Why hasn't Indian, Thai, Japanese or Korean food become Americanized? read more

Han Dynasty is an absolutely fabulous Chinese restaurant hidden in a very inconspicuous strip mall. We drove by this place one week-night when it had first opened on a hunch, before it was rated one of the best restaurants in Philly, and it was full of Chinese people. There is one good rule I follow to judge whether a particular restaurant of a specific cusine (whether it's Indian, Chinese, etc) is any good, and that is the number of the customers eating there of that particular national origin. So on that note, we decided to give it a try. It is a BOYB (unless it's changed recently) so you can bring a nice bottle of wine with you to enjoy your food. The decor is nothing spectacular (not a great first date type of place) but the food will blow you away. The Hunan Style Triple delight is something I highly recommend and get almost every time, although most things on the menu are very good and well prepared. A word from the wise, don't get into the authentic Chinese dishes unless you have had them before or are feeling adventurous. I've let Han pick my food a couple of times and I was a little disappointed to be honest. The dishes were lovely but just not what I prefer personally. Again, I would recommend to only get these dishes if you are a fan of authentic Chinese. The waiters are all very friendly. Han does his absolute best to make sure you feel welcome and have a great time. Most waiters speak very poor English but they usually repeat your order and every time I've been there it's been great. You usually don't need a reservation on weeknights but on Friday-Saturday it may not be a bad idea. Additionally, it's also a great place to take out from! The portions are very generous and the prices are very fair. All-in-all I would highly recommend Han Dynasty. Don't let the strange location and the Dollar store next door scare you off, this place is truly a hidden gem. read more
