Z Wei has been around for many years, and my dining experiences there have mostly been average. It's not the most authentic but it's still good, as in hot out of the kitchen. In general though, I think they're a little heavy handed with the salt, but it's possible to put in a request for them to use less of it. Service was relatively fast and staff were polite. The ambience and decor still looks like it's always been -- a little dim but cozy. If you do have a large party though, this place is likely big enough to host it. read more

I have been eating at ZWei for over 15 years. I am a former New Yorker and I know good food. Their wonton soup is amazing with well seasoned and soft wontons. I came with two young boys whose only exposure to Chinese food was orange chicken. Naturally, they wanted to eat orange chicken. I didn't see this dish on the menu, but asked our waitress anyways and she said the kitchen staff could gladly accommodate. They wanted different levels of spicy, so she brought out two orange chicken dishes of different spice levels. I don't eat orange chicken ever (at the risk of sounding prissy, I prefer authentic Chinese food--my family is from Sichuan!) but I had a bite of theirs and it was pretty good. They even had some orange peel (not just zest) which was a nice touch to the spicier dish. I ordered a sushi roll (I'm forgetting now the name but I think it may have been the Z. The Kani Salad is GREAT! The egg rolls and spring rolls are good. The salmon sushi is really good. The yellow tail sushi is good. The tuna and whitefish weee not good - they had a soft texture. Miso soup was good. Sweet and sour chicken was not bad. California rolls were average - 3 different opinions in our family about these rolls. We have been going here for ages and they have been a solid choice the entire time. Their menu has changed with the times and they haven't been afraid to add and remove items as appropriate. I am enjoying their current dim sum menu and working my way through it. Just the other day they catered a party we had and everyone enjoyed the food. The preparation and portions were great and we lacked for nothing. It was the first time I saw people go back for thirds! We have gotten to know the folks at the restaurant and they took care of us well on that important day. The default style of food is certainly more along the lines of an Americanized version but done very well. Their current menu has an expanded offering of more traditional style too. Atmosphere: When I went, the restaurant was empty save for 2 children playing the piano & video games in the other room, and guests ordering take-out (which was a bit concerning). Staff/Environment: The staff members were friendly and polite, the wait-times for the food (and calling a waiter) could definitely be better. Conclusions: As an Asian person, I felt that they could have done a bit better with the service & food. I'm really puzzled as to why this has such a high rating. While in the area today, I stopped by since I was craving chinese. I ordered their lunch special of chicken and brocolli steamed with egg drop soup and fried rice. Surprise surprise, they don't do fried rice! What chinese estaurant doesn't offer fried rice? I waited for my food, only took 5-10 minutes, and then left. When I was drinking the soup, I found myself unable to finish it. As much as I tried, I could not drink the soup because it made me nauseous. So its an okay place, as long as you like white rice and don't drink the egg drop soup! read more

Just decided to add one more notch on my belt when it comes to local sushi places. This place is that notch. The look of this place almost reminded me of a diner that was remodeled into a sushi restaurant. Not a great look to me. But I ordered a maki combo which came out promptly, and I enjoyed the taste. Freshness is not an issue. I do however believe that the size of the rolls is a bit smaller compared to what I can get elsewhere. Not a bad place. But not memorable either. I've always stood by the fact that Chinese restaurants are much better when you go with a Chinese person. Cashew chicken, beef and broccoli, and kung pao shrimp are old hat for most of us. It's that mysterious menu that's half (or all) Chinese characters where the true treasures lie. There are no fake generals or mythical creatures on this menu. "Chicken with black bean sauce" is exactly what you're going to get. Unfortunately, none of the choices sound exactly appetizing. Which is why I was lucky my co-worker could get our waiter to spill his favorite dish: "Shredded pork with dried bean curd". While the name is brutally honest, what we got was a nice mixed dish of pork strips and tofu strips with some vegetables. I also picked something from the "American" menu, the "Pepper Steak". Nothing too special here. Our appetizer was Szechuan dumplings, which was not nearly as spicy as we had hoped. The restaurant is nice and large, and service was pretty good, but it looked painfully empty (ratio of 3 employees to each customer, it seemed). But I stayed, despite my gut feeling. I ordered mapo tofu, which has become my standard for deciding if a place is good or not. I could see that it had that certain jiggle to it when it was placed in front of me - the kind of jiggle that is unnatural to a dish. It had the consistency of snot, no joke. Excellent fresh tasting food. I'm always happy with my orders from here. I only do takeout. Never have eaten in the restaurant. Our go-to items are the teriyakis (shrimp and chicken) and the bento specials. Always fresh and crisp veggies and the shrimp are perfectly cooked. On my most recent trip the gentleman that answered the phone came out my car to bring me the food. I called to see if my food was ready because my 1.5 and 3 year old kids were sound asleep. This place was okay. I ordered the Chinese Lunch Special with Ma Pao Spicy Tofu, Miso Soup, and White Rice. I took my order back to my office - when I opened it, the rice was missing and I was given the wrong soup. The employee who answered the phone was very apologetic and helpful, I felt taken care of even as a to-go order. When I finally ate my food, the tofu was unfortunately just not the best. It had what I believe were frozen peas and carrots in it, and when I ate them they just tasted hard and undercooked. I have ordered this dish at other restaurants and I have never seen this type of veggies in it. The sauce itself tasted more like a spicy tomato sauce. Maybe if there were higher quality ingredients it would've tasted better but I just couldn't enjoy it. Usually I dip my rice in the sauce but I barely finished the dish. Certainly not something I would order from here again. The tofu itself was perfectly cooked and my miso was delicious. The rice was made exactly as it should be. Overall, it was not an awful experience and for $8 I certainly got a bang out of my buck. If I came back I would probably choose something less adventurous. read more

There was a large party in a private room and either they were overwhelmed or understaffed but no one was waiting on us . Had to get up to ask for things and had to hand dirty plates to the server who came by to clear the table. On to the food... cold sesame noodles that were completely bland ... no flavor and minimal sauce. Mediocre veggie dumplings. The rolls were actually acceptable but the pad Thai was terrible.Overall; tasteless, uninspired, diner quality crap. Do not waste your time or money. Since moving to the area 3 years ago, I've been here a handful of times for various occasions--a quick, decent lunch, to entertain my visiting Chinese mother who cannot get half-decent Chinese food in our hometown, and to celebrate events such as moving, or another finished semester at school. The menu ranges from authentic Chinese which is really good if you know what to order (I mostly leave that to Mom but I am learning), to Americanized Chinese, which is still good, but nothing special. I would say Han Dynasty down the road is better in terms of their authentic dishes, but Z.Wei's menu has more diversity if not everyone in your party is into that sort of thing. They have great lunch specials, such as their bento boxes which I tend to order for a quick meal between running errands out on the town, which you can get for under $10 with a drink as well. (Note: the dinner bento box is about 2x the price of the lunch portion, but you get to choose two entrees instead of one. Whichever you order, it's always a fair portion for the price.) The sushi is pretty good, though I've had better elsewhere, and reasonably priced, though with modest portions. The rolls aren't huge, but neither are they a ripoff. They're perfect for my appetite. The service is always super quick and gracious, and I've had nothing to complain about since I've been going there. Unless you're going on a Friday or Saturday night, it seems dead, but don't let that fool you because overall, it's a great place to eat. I'd recommend it to anyone. Overall: Good for both an in-and-out experience on weekday lunch break and entertaining guests in the evening. Food, price, and service are decent and fair if you're looking for a quick pick.
