I came here for lunch with some coworkers on a Friday afternoon. The food was excellent, but the service was pretty bad. When we got there, it was extremely busy. It took several minutes to just wave down someone to seat us. Each one of us got a lunch special with the intent to share the main courses. We all got soup, which came out promptly. There was a pretty long wait, then the main dishes slowly came out one by one. We were told the last one would come out in a few minutes, so we started eating because we were starving. We finished eating but still hadn't gotten our last dish. A server doesn't come over until they ask to clear our plates, when we tell them we are still waiting for the last dish. We wait several minutes longer, and it finally comes out. Everything was delicious, but it took way too long, especially for a work day lunch. This is the best Chinese restaurant, period. Staff is good and the service is usually very prompt. Prices are very reasonable; I think it's a very good value. It can get very busy for dinner. While they have other locations, I've been to University City and Old City, the original Exton location is still the best. The food is just great. We chose Han Dynasty after recommendations from a friend and were very excited. We drove the 40 minutes to Exton in Friday evening traffic and were pleased by the overall appearance. We joked about their website as Han Dynasty types as handynasty and in the end, it did turn out to be handy nasty. Service was slow, unfriendly and incorrect when asked questions. We ordered the won ton soup, fried dumplings and Dan Dan noodles as apps. They were ok. The soup was cold and the Dan Dan noodles, I thought, had a weird taste. The dumplings were thick and the dumpling sauce tasteless. We ordered a variety of mains. However, my dinner didn't come out until the rest of my party was finished eating. I had to sit there and watch everyone not really enjoy their meals. Apparently. The shredded duck was super salty, the crispy noodles which when asked what they entailed were told noodles with a sauce, came out looking like a bed of noodles under slimy breaded pieces of something. We thought it may have been beef, chicken and fish. My friend was disappointed because he didn't eat beef or fish, my other 2 friends liked their dishes, garlic shrimp & Kung pao chicken. My Kung pao shrimp came out and tasted nice but the little bit of rice was cold and no server ever came back to the table to see if we needed anything. We complained to the manager and she took 10% off our bill but it didn't really make up for the fact that our nice dinner out was ruined. Thankfully we had desert back at the house. read more

My wife and I tried this place after driving by and seeing the banner that they were ranked cnn top 50 restaurants in America. Also when on yelp and saw the reviews so we wanted to see what the hype was about. Well I'm still confused. We ordered take out. We got house special fried rice. Was barely fried. Looked like plain white rice with veggies and a little meat added. Was flavor less. To me a Chinese restaurants fried rice has to be good for me to want anything else. Also got chicken with hot dry peppers. Chicken was nice and crispy and was definitely spicy but otherwise, nothing to go nutz about. Lastly ordered the dan dan noodles after all of the reviews on it. This was such a disappointment. Just mushy and greasy. I could not eat it and threw it out. I'm not exaggerating here. I wanted this food to be delish but I was really really disappointed. They have a very interesting menu and I love trying new dishes but it will be hard for me to ever go back. Especially since the fried rice wasn't good. read more

I went to Han Dynasty yesterday for a family friends reunion dinner and we ordered many dishes. I am a picky eater :P, so i only ate two dishes, they were both delicious though! It is a great place to eat if you like spicy food, and inexpensive food! The atmosphere is peaceful, but when you eat at night, there is usually a lot of people so it is not too quiet. The restaurant also has large banquet rooms for big groups of people. The only thing that makes me not want to go back is the service. I asked for water and they brought me boiling hot water. Then I gave them back the hot water and asked for ice water. They never brought me water until I asked the waiter again after a period of time. Also, you have to wait quite a while to get your dishes, they serve them one by one. I would recommend this restaurant as long as your willing to wait for your food! :) peace. read more

Took my dad to Han Dynasty for Father's Day, making it my third visit. Stopped on the way to grab a sixer of Bass to drink at the authentic Sichuan BYOB. The first sign of an awesome, authentic Ethnic restaurant was the initial thing I noticed as we were shown to our seats: virtually everyone in the restaurant was Asian and, furthermore, speaking Chinese. The one complaint I have about this place is the service, and this sentiment only reaffirmed itself this visit. Waiters and bus staff are quite slow and inattentive, although in their defense there seemed to be only one of each. This issue notwithstanding: I still chose to give the full five stars, due to the ridiculous quality of the food. We started with three appetizers (overkill, yes, but you should order as many different things here as possible, believe me). The first was the Dan-Dan noodles, which continue to be delicious and which my 65-year-old father declared to be one of the best things he's ever eaten. Second was the Taiwanese sausage. A small platter of thin (think breakfast link-sized), sliced sausages are served with a side of slivered garlic. The combination may sound odd but, believe me, the slightly sweet, complex flavor of the sausage combined with the sharp pungency of the garlic amounted to one of the best bites of food I've had in recent memory. Just be sure either your date eats it, too, or you're not going to be kissing anyone in the near future. Our third appetizer was the Cold Sliced Pork Stomach in Chili Oil. Not as complex as the others, but a good plate of food nonetheless. Almost a salad, with the crunchy slices of pork stomach dressed in spicy oil as the base, with oinion-y, garlic-y sliced scallions? on top to add some freshness and spice. Having never tried it before, I chose the Ma Po Tofu with minced pork as my main course. Knowing this is considered to be one of the cornerstones of Sichuan cuisine, I was interested to see what all the fuss was about. It was definitely different. A plethora of large cubes of tofu came to the table swimming in a rich, spicy, porky, murky broth. After burning myself on the molten-on-the-inside tofu chunks a few times, the dish cooled enough to be eaten comfortably. Definitely spicy but not painfully so, the Szechuan peppercorns and their numbing abilities were definitely appreciated. As an unabashed carnivore, I think I can give this dish my highest praise when I call it my favorite tofu (or non-meat-based) dish ever. For his entree, my dad chose the relatively mild (3 on the spicy scale) Garlic Style Chicken. This basically tasted like the best thing you've ever had at a regular Chinese restaurant, but with the flavors amplified by ten. I thoroughly enjoyed the bites I had. One last note, for those that may be wary of the spiciness here: don't be deterred. My dad is definitely not a "chili head" or anything close, and he was able to comfortably sample everything, including the ma po and the pork in chili oil, both on the high end of the spicy scale. The only thing I would caution anyone about is anything done in the Dry Pot style. From what I've heard, these dishes can truly be 'face on fire' hot. GO THERE! read more

I am not sure what the hype is all about...maybe it's for the different Han Dynasty, but the food is not good...this could explain why they couldn't get another Zagat rating. We ordered the beef noodle soup and it was blend. The favour of the soup didn't have enough time to penetrate the noodle, so it tasted like noodle-and-soup, not noodle soup. If you go down the block to visit Z-wei and have their chilli beef noodle soup, you'll know what I am talking about. We also had the scallion pancake, but it was bit over-fried, so we could taste the bitterness. The string bean dish is the only dish that is still up to par. As for atmosphere, the restaurant needs a serious rework. The restaurant is dark and gloomy, but the decor wasn't going to the trendy theme. The benches all have holes on them. Han Dynasty used to be my go-to chinese place in the area, but recently the service and food quality has been poor. I usually have to call 2 or 3 times before they pick up the phone. I feel bad sitting there letting the phone ring 8 times before they answer, but if I hang up I'll never be able to order. Also the food doesn't taste the same as it did a year ago. I used to tell all my friends to give them a try but I found I've stopped recommending it. I just ordered again last night and I just wasn't impressed. I will likely try them again in the future to see if their quality and service has gone back up, and I hope it does. read more

This is my family's go to when we eat out for Chinese. The place is not big but it's decently modern. The quantity and the quality of their food are always good. Some items on the menu might be a little pricy, but most of the items off their menu are worth the money. One only improvement I can see is maybe they should hire a couple more staff during rush hours at dinner, food can come out a little late sometimes and the staff looks overwhelmed all the time, we've had the server forgetting a dish we ordered before because they were so busy. I go there with my Chinese friend a few times a week. The food is glorious. Our favorite dishes: Ma Po Tofu with Minced Pork (the tofu has a wonderful soft custardy texture), Cold Noodles made of bean curd in Chili Oil, Eggplant stuffed with shrimp, Shredded Pork With Hot Peppers, and Beef in Dry Pot. There are other delicious authentic dishes that are cooked just right. This is extraordinarily good food, head and shoulders above most Chinese restaurants. read more

I was looking for lunch while waiting to check into my hotel, and I found this quaint little place. I love that it has an authentic and Americanized menu, and the food is good, but not great. The egg rolls with the hot mustard sauce was awesome, and I tried the shredded beef with celery, which was very good. The chunks of beef were very small, and the celery was cut in long strips that made eating it a trick with chopsticks. Overall, a great place for the price for a sit-down non-buffet establishment. The steamed dumplings were almost raw, the eggrolls were burned, and the beef dish I had was so greasy with so little beef, it wasn't worth it. I went here for dinner with my boyfriend on a Saturday night. The restaurant was pretty busy, but a bit understaffed. They brought us water and tea after we sat (free of charge.) There was plenty on the menu to choose from. I ordered the garlic style chicken and my boyfriend ordered Kung pao chicken. The meals also came with white rice. Both of our dishes were excellent. I've been eating here when I'm in town for about 5 years and this place used to be great. The food has severely gone downhill in not only quality of ingredients but also in ability to prepare a dish. I ate here for lunch today, saying that so hopefully a member of the staff reads this and remembers me, I ordered the dry hot pot and my gf ordered fried dumplings and the cold noodles with chili oil and we shared each other's food. The mushrooms in my dish were impossible to cut even with a knife and the rest of the vegetables had a freeze dried feel to them being the consistency of bark. The pork was a bit rubbery and only had flavor from the oil draped over everything that seemed under seasoned as well and definitely tasted old. This was labeled in the menu as a 10/10 spicy rating, it was at most a 2. I didn't bother saying anything because of how rude the waiter/host was, but I'll get to that. The rice was cold and clumped together in chunks that led me to understand that it was previously microwaved. The dumplings looked ok, but the dough was undercooked and the sauce was just soy sauce that had no care whatsoever put into it. Her noodles were very bland and whoever prepared them obviously doesn't care about their food. The noodles had the same flavor deprived oil from my dish in it, just disappointing really. This type of food is supposed to be robust and I've eaten at a ton of places across the country and internationally that do care about what the put out. This place doesn't care anymore. The man that seated us was incredibly rude the entire time. He huffed and puffed and stomped his feet when I asked for the real Chinese menu instead of the Americanized Chinese menu. And, they used to throw shade if you asked for the Americanized menu, now it's the opposite. After we were done we both had a decent amount of food left and I decided to take it to feed to the raccoons that come around my house. They look cool and I like to feed them. Anyway, the take out container was dirty from previous food in it! I was blown away, especially when I pointed it out and the rude person pretending to be a man grabbed it out of my hand and stormed, literally stormed off before I was even half way through my sentence. I was calm the whole time, not sure what this guys deal is. Then came back with the same container that he washed! He washed the dirty container that should never have been used in the first place and thought that was acceptable. I will never go here again and I hope they go out of business so no one has to be punished by this Handy Nasty food. Disgusting food and disgusting people, except for the one guy who worked there who said goodbye to us. He seemed mortified because he knew what the cuck host just did to everyone in the dining area throughout the day and I assume throughout his life. I have always liked the food at Han. I like spicy and it is by far the spiciest Chinese food that I have had. The food gets a 4-5. The service gets a 2-3. After they take your order, you have to chase them down for a napkin or a check. Once the food is delivered, they do not come back. If you ask a question, expect a blank stare. English comprehension is very limited. That may explains the lack of customer interface. read more

We enjoyed a very nice lunch this past Saturday ordering food off both the authentic and Americanized menus. We ordered hot and sour soup, shredded potato in chili oil, cold sesame noodles, Taiwanese sausage and scallion pancake to start, then ordered Dan Dan Noodles, Generals Tso's Chicken and Chicken with Hot Dry Peppers as our meals... in case you are wondering, yes that is a lot of food, but everything sounded so yummy and we had a hard time deciding. The food and portions were excellent. Great service, the wait staff was friendly and attentive. The location is hard to find, I put the address into the navi and it took us to a plaza on the other side of the red light. We drove around a bit til we found it, it is in the Exton Plaza so when you see that, stop and go in, there is a big produce market in the plaza and as previous posters have mentioned it's beside the dollar store. There was a lot of sliced garlic in every dish, I loved it but if you aren't a fan be warned. The hot and sour soup needed some vinegar which the waiter was more than happy to bring to me, it was good once I gave it a spoonful. My General Tso's Chicken which I ordered spicy wasn't very spicy, however the Chicken with Hot Dry Peppers was VERY spicy and a wonderful surprise. I didn't have any sausage or dan dan noodles (I'm not that adventurous) but my friends enjoyed them so I do believe they were a hit. The cold sesame noodles were great, I'd suggest mixing in the peanut sauce once they get to the table, it was gooped on top and to me was a bit over whelming but was great when mixed in with the noodles evenly. Scallion pancakes were good, so was the potato in chili oil. We will most definately go back there is so much more we wanted to try. read more

My son & I dined here on 7/5/14. Love this place! This is the Top Chinese Restaurant by far in the entire area. Been here on several occasions. We started off with two amazing egg rolls. I ordered the garlic sauce style with chicken, it was amazing as always, my son ordered the Hot Dry Pepper Style Fish, what a spectacular dish! We both love spicy hot and that's what we got! Also ordered pork fried rice, which was deliciously good. The service was wonderful, love our server who remembers us every time we dine there and the rest of the staff is great as well. As my son always says, if you want Authentic Spicy Chinese Cuisine, come to Han Dynasty! You won't be disappointed it's a outstanding experience, it's truly the best in the area and has other locations as well. We ate here a few months ago and it was phenomenal. I don't know what happened today. We got take out and it was Hands down the worst Chinese food we've ever had. Dry, tasteless honey walnut shrimp. No wontons in the soup- just thick folded noodle. Fake broth, not the chicken broth that was ordered. The general tso was all wrong. I'm heating up a pizza in the oven as I type this review. I'd really like my money back. This place is $$. Absolutely will not be going back. I've had Chinese food in mall food courts, North philly, and Chinese buffets better than this. Based on all the reviews, I had to try the Dan Dan noodles. They were absolutely flavorful and cooked right (not mushy). When I ordered, the waiter clarified that they contained pork and I acknowledged that this was okay. When he brought the bowl, he mixed the noodles in the sauce, but I was disappointed to see that it was just noodles in sauce with nearly undetectable meat. The point of my review is to set your expectations that Dan Dan noodles is really just a lot of noodles in a delicious sauce and nothing more. If you want meat and vegetables with your noodles, you had better order something else. I also ordered a vegetable egg roll and it was perfectly fried. The inside was all white... I have no idea what veggies were in there. Service was lightning quick at noon. I'll go back again and try something new. We've been here a couple of times when in town. This is not for fans of Americanized Chinese foods, nor is it particularly fancy. But it is good food. BYOB if that is your thing. Spice factor is real so approach those numbers with caution. But those spicy-phobes there are options on the menu. Family has loved the Scallion Pancakes and others have enjoyed the steamed dumplings. Veggies are very good too - beans, pea leaves (really try them), eggplant or the bok choy (mushrooms are so good, but in the center if you are fungi-adverse). However for us the star of the show are the entrees - scallions for the non-spicy lovers, garlic sauce for the some spice but not too much, cumin style if you can handle the cumin or the hot sauce for the Sichuan lovers. You have to ask for more rice or water on weekends, as it gets busy, but so worth it. read more

For a long time as a Chinese foodie my family loved going to Han Dynasty. But we went there for my birthday last week and the food was horrible. The string beans were fried in stale tasting oil and the boss won't admit it had a bad taste to it. The walnut sprimp that we ordered were fried in extra thick batter. the small sprimp turned into a fat corn dog looking thing. Our last dish, orange beef was also covered in thick breading, beef was not tender, hard to chew and it had crazy amount of glaze glob on it. Horrible Horrible...I was super disappointed after wanting to visit there for a while. Dont waste your money. This is not how Chinese food should taste like! read more

My wife and I have been there three times now, and each time I look forward to trying something new. They have some Americanized dishes, and a good deal of traditional ones as well. Nary a bad dish or appetizer yet. The portions are large enough that we usually have some left over. The innocuous sounding Chinese meatballs are AWESOME and highly recommeded. My family has lived in the Exton area for over ten years, and as a Chinese family in the Philadelphia suburbs, we were always starved of authentic Chinese food outside of our own kitchen. When Han Dynasty opened, we were among its first customers, and are now loyal diners. Before we became acquainted with the owner and his lovely family, who now manage a few different locations around the Philly area and recognize my family at each location, we came just for the authentic Sichuan (yes, that's the real spelling), probably the most authentic we've had in at least the Philadelphia area, if not on the entire East Coast. If you're looking for real Chinese food, skip China Wok, skip the General Tzo's Chicken (whoever he was), skip the lo mein. Be prepared to reach for the cold water and the rice. My recommendations are the Sliced Beef and Tripe in Hot Sauce, the Chicken with Hot Dry Pepper, Ma Po Tofu, Stir Fried String Beans (give your taste buds a little break), and if you're looking for a good soup, go for the Fish in Pickled Vegetable Soup, which might be my favorite thing on the menu. I can't complain about any of the food here. I haven't tried the more Americanized dishes (fried rice, orange chicken, etc.), but if you go authentic, and have an open mind, you will not be disappointed. Close your eyes, and let your taste buds do all the work- they'll be grateful. read more

Tasty. We ordered 5 different dishes and 3 different apps. Scallion pancakes were delicious. The garlic beef was very good. My oldest who likes fish, ordered fish in pickled chili.
