A comforting place. Beef noodle soup is good here, and is a casual meal that I come to get food often. Beer is calling!

Stopped in, very busy and had to wait on seating, so that was a good sign. The beef noodles in a clear broth (Qin Dan Nui Rui Mian) was excellent, and the Pan Fried Rice Cake with Mustard Green & Shredded Pork (雪菜肉絲炒年糕) is chewy and great - don't bring it as leftover as the rice cake gets hard when it's cold and hard to warm up again. Sliced Pork Ears with Hot & Spicy Seasoning / 麻辣耳絲 is spicy and delicious. Some of the best I've had in the US. Picked Cabbage / 泡菜 was ok, but more sweet & sour (white vinegar and sugar to cure it, I'm sure). The pork chop over rice - pork chop was good, but the rice with the braised pork sauce was just ok (and they're down to half a braised egg now instead of a whole). Overall still solid in my book. read more

A&J Bistro offers very fast service with impressively professional and efficient waitstaff. Everything moves quickly here, which makes it a great spot if you're looking for a well-paced meal. If you're planning to order the pan-fried soup dumplings, just know they typically arrive last. That's not a bad thing as they make them fresh to order, which explains the delay. One dish I personally didn't enjoy was the bean curd veggie delight. It had an odd, lingering flavor possibly from canned ingredients or a strong herb or spice. I couldn't quite place it, but it reminded me of Chinese five spice or something similar. That same flavor seemed to show up faintly in the fried chicken too, which made it a bit less enjoyable for me. On the other hand, the beef noodle soup was solid. The broth was comforting, and the beef was tender. The spicy wonton soup was just okay--nothing particularly memorable. Overall, A&J Bistro delivers quick service and a decent range of dishes. Not everything was to my taste, but there are definitely some highlights. I'd rate it a 4 out of 5. read more

IFKYK- it's really hard to find good Taiwanese food in NYC. So when visiting friends in Jersey I'm glad this place exists!! I lived in socal for ten years and loved the A&J in Irvine- the menu looks about the same with a few adds and minuses and the food tastes very similar but I think Irvine is slightly better. I love the seaweed sprout vinegar salad, and the cucumbers are very good as well. Pig ears also solid. I got the pork chop rice which was delicious! Can't wait to come back. A & J Bistro continues to be a great destination for Szechuan food. OK, it's really the only destination for Szechuan food in the area, but it's still very good. Keep in mind though, it is strictly a Szechuan food restaurant, and that's really all that's on the menu. Don't come looking for egg rolls or sweet and sour pork. One of the dishes I keep returning for is the Niu Ro Niu Jin Mian (1100 on the menu). In English that's Spicy Beef & Tendon Noodle Soup. I recommend ordering the soup with hand cut noodles. It is spicy, but not scary spicy, and loaded with flavor. The service is quick and friendly, even if there is a bit of a language barrier if you don't speak Chinese. You can always point to what you want on the menu. The interior isn't fancy, but it's clean and efficient. On a cold, winter day A & J Bistro is a great destination to warm your stomach and your soul. read more

What a treat to find this gem in central Jersey. Love how authentic the dishes are and so reasonably priced. My personal favorite is the pancake with beef and the sliced beef & tripe in spicy sauce. I noticed too late that they also have freshly made youtiao, which are kind of like Chinese churros :) It can get pretty busy on weekends, so be prepared to wait if you get here during prime lunch time. Absolutely horrific. Haven't been in years and decided to try this place out again and ordered takeout -- big mistake. My pork chop rice came with mostly bone, a few scraps of meat, and rice. When I brought it up, the staff were nasty, rude and dismissive. Paid for this in cash and staff persistently requested a tip after I politely declined. Won't be coming back! Not bad for pretty well priced taiwanese food. I got the beef spicy noodle soup which was not spicy at all and probably could have been more flavorful, but I liked the chewy noodles. Also got the Chinese style fried pork chop (kinda like donkatsu) which was tasty. Xiaolongbao were not the best in terms of taste and a lot of them had broken and all the soup leaked out before we even tried to pick them up. They forgot to bring us the herbal jelly at first but it was probably the highlight of the meal. I don't think I would crave this or come to East Hanover for it but would consider coming back if I'm in the area again. read more

Have been there multiple times over the years. The ambiance has improved since they removed the screens around tables. A and J has always been a bit of a mixed bag. The service has always been uneven however, on this visit, it was rapid and attentive. If you are lucky you get a table that is fully set with chili oil, soya and vinegar. If you are unlucky you get one of the many tables with incomplete accompaniments and have to hunt around the restaurant. Food which used to be inexpensive has had the price raised. The dishes also seem to be smaller in size. My last visit, the food was disappointing. Everything seemed surprisingly salty and not of the quality I have experienced in the past. read more

Updating my review. I gave A&J another try after a friend of mine said it's actually good. So this time around, it was pretty decent. The side of cabbage with the pork chop rice was still cold. Overall, I think all their hot food could benefit from being served at a hotter temperature. A&J is hands down one of my favorite places to eat in Morris County. They serve delicious Taiwanese food at a reasonable price. A&J is such a hit with people I've introduced it to that they keep wanting to come back. My favorites are the fried pork chop over rice, pork and crab soup dumplings, black fungus salad, and the shredded bean curd with celery. Service is super fast! For those who might be confused about the menus you are given, there's actually a book that contains food photos (ask for that one). Favs are the shredded pork & mustard green noodle soup, spicy beef noodle soup, fried pork chop on rice, cai ro wontons, cucumber salad, seaweed & bean sprouts in garlic, bean curd with assorted mushrooms, bean curd with mustard green & soy beans, boiled peanuts, lu dan and scallion pancakes. Prefer the skinny noodles. Not a big fan of the soup dumplings as the times ordered, a few had broken. You get complimentary tea (wish it were stronger). There's also bubble tea (surprisingly decent). Super casual place. Cash only (although they accept Zelle). read more

There is an A&J restaurant in Maryland near my childhood home, and one in Los Angeles near my wife's childhood home, and then there's this one in NJ. All of them are Chinese restaurants. I wonder, do they share ownership? I have always wondered what exactly A&J meant and why these restaurants decided to call their restaurant A&J rather than some other arbitrary combination of letters like V&K. That being said, the only real negative for this restaurant is the fact that it is in East Hanover and so far away from where I live. The menu has a very extensive, and inexpensive selection of authentic Taiwanese food - Taiwanese sausage, dan zi noodles, pork chop noodles, jia jiang noodles, shen jian bao (pan fried pork buns), rolled pancake with sliced beef, popcorn chicken, red bean pastries. We ordered too much and finished it all. All of it is amazing. Service is good too, no complaints. We will be back next time we are willing to drive. I am jealous of East Hanover now. read more

Great menu, busy ambiance, delicious food for suburban New Jersey. The menu selection was pretty decent and had some solid favorites including beef noodle soup with hand pulled noodles and also the soupy dumplings. Prices seem pretty standard for what it was and the portion sizes were perfect. What we ordered was not really classified as "family style" but it's ok cause it wasn't priced as such. The beef soup was hearty and the thick noodles gave the dish some extra "meat" in addition to the actual beef that was in the soup. The soupy dumplings were the last thing to come out even though we wanted those first but they probably took longer to make and cook than the soup noodles. The service was good. We came at the right time and got seated immediately. It did get busy so the workers were walking around numerous times to make sure that all diners were ok which means that it was never hard to get someone's attention. I wish this place were bigger because it's much popular than the number of seats available in the dining room. Definitely give this place a shot if you want real and authentic Chinese food in the suburban part of New Jersey. read more

My family's been coming here for years. Most of the stuff on the menu tastes very good and pretty authentic. However, the savory soy milk was a new addition recently and was not impressive. The soup dumplings are decent, but the beef noodle soup is on point, as is their small side dishes like the pig ears, scallion pancakes, and cucumber salad. The service is good depending on the time of day you go. They don't have too much staff so when you go on weekends, you can expect a bit of a wait. Food is brought out quickly, though, so that's a plus. The only issue I have with this place is that it's not very handicap accessible. It's difficult navigating the restaurant if you have a wheelchair or stroller cause tables are so close together. The hallway to the restroom is also very narrow, so it is difficult to get a wheelchair through. read more

My friend and I dined here for lunch. The service from the waiter was so abominable, I feel compelled to write this review. Upon being seated, I picked up the laminated menu to peruse what to order. The waiter immediately snatched it away and handed us exactly 1 paper menu and a pencil. In a very irritated voice, he said he was very busy and we would have to circle what we wanted and he would not write down our order for us. He then he abruptly walked away before we could protest. I never got an opportunity to view the menu, since he only gave us 1 menu. I just ended up ordering what my friend ordered because the waiter impatiently returned before I could view the menu and told us he is putting the order in. He snatched away the pencil and paper menu and stormed off without even asking me what I wanted and yelling that he order will take a while. The order took more than a while and the waiter unceremoniously dumped my friend's order on thr table and abruptly marched off again. My order did not arrive until 25 minutes later. All the while, we tried to flag down the waiter wherein he made eye contact, but refused to stop at the table. Finally my meal arrived and my friend could eat her, now-cold, meal. To her dismay, instead of using pork in her pai gu fan, they sneakily used chicken. At no time during the meal, did the waiter ever stop to inquire if we needed anything. He never refilled water or removed empty dishes. I ended up getting up from the table myself to get some napkins. Interestingly when I came time to present the bill and collect the tip, the waiter was suddenly front and center. Just thinking about the poor service received prevents me from going back. The waiter just treated us more of an annoyance rather than customers. read more

Absolutely delicious, authentic Taiwanese food. Everything we had was superb - the pork soup dumplings with chewy wrap and non-oily soup, the spicy beef tendon soup with delightfully chewy noodles, the vegetarian delight which was fresh wheat gluten and mushrooms, and the spicy tendons with perfect texture. Everything was flavorful and not overly salty. Prompt service rounds out the entire meal. Always packed in the evenings, we're glad we were able to make it for lunch. read more

Veggies were awesome! I couldn't find many meat alternatives + everything was super caloric. Would def come on a night I was planning to pig out - I came right after the gym and had dinner alone. Staff was pretty rude. Not much directions in terms of ordering or paying - I was handed a sheet of paper and a pencil with no word said. Then when I wanted to close out - I walked up and followed the directions on a sign which stated I needed to Zelle. As I was walking out apparently she wanted me to write my phone number and the amount of tip. I wouldn't have known that because all I was given was a check - no explanation on how I should pay. read more

You would likely not guess by the name, but A&J Bistro is a casual, authentic Taiwanese restaurant. It's unusual in NJ suburbs, but I really enjoy the authenticity. Almost everything here is under $10, but it's small plates so you should get 2-3 plates per person. I really enjoy being able to get variety (it's kind of like Asian tapas!). FOOD: I think they're most well known for their noodle dishes. I enjoyed the sesame one the most. I came with a friend who is regular and he ordered for us, so to be honest I don't really remember what we got other than the Sesame noodles, pig ears, and grass jelly dessert. All were good. I would like to come back and try more things! SERVICE: I think service leaves something to be desired, I found myself having to waive the wait staff down. Maybe that's just the vibe here as a casual place. OVERALL: Definitely would (and will) come back to try more things :) read more
