Menu has an array of teas and assorted drinks. Service was very friendly and helpful. Since I was too full from eating at Shan Shan prior, just picked up 1 taro and 1 red bean bun. They were larger than the average Asian bakery bun. The interior was very dense, moist and full of rich filling. Both the red bean and taro were not too sweet and equally delicious. I specifically came here to procure a total of 6 egg tarts on a weekday afternoon. Each pack of two tarts was priced at $4, which is on par with the pricing of the only other local Asian market (Kamman) that sells egg tarts. The ridges on the tarts are crumby, and the actual custard is soft and eggy. That egg custard tart itself really hits the spot taste-wise and texture-wise!! The variety of baked goods doesn't blow anything out of the water, but I liked that they have staple sweets like pineapple buns, red bean, sesame breads, new lava cakes, as well as savory scallion buns. They also sell cookies, cakes and boba. The boba is not much to write home about.. This is a casual no-frills place for a get-together with ample seating area. read more

Granted, I've only been here once, but right now I'm wavering on a lot for this review. I absolutely love Shan Shan Noodles so I had high hopes for their dessert place, and maybe I oversold myself on that. First of all, don't touch! I was poking the plastic-wrapped pastries to see what was soft, turning them over to see what ingredients, and was told to use the tongs. Really, I need tongs for an already wrapped pastry? But I don't want to intrude on their cleanliness, so I include this here as a note that you will need to mind the same! (It's a very clean looking place. It fits the vibe.) More than the prompt if abrupt conversation, the food hasn't convinced me yet. The storekeep vouched it's all made there, and I buy it. Chinese desserts are not intended to be as sweet as Western, and that is definitely the case here. The sweetest was the one I got as a non-dessert! The shredded pork cream roll, the cream really made it sweet, overtaking the salty shredded meat on top (which is so cool to see). The red bean and black sesame rolls were hard to place as dessert vs. appetizer, and I acknowledge that's just me. The date squares were interesting but a little less than I hoped - a little too puffy, a piece of date or two inside but it should be many pieces or no pieces IMO to avoid setting expectations. Plus one bite had a really weird bitter taste for some reason. This review could go up or down. Next time I Shan Shan, I will Sweet Shan along with it and pick up some more items to nail down my thoughts. read more

I returned several times after that top rated first visit and none really lived up to the original. Everything is still fresh and clean, but the textures never seem quite right in the baked goods nor the fillings. The best items are definitely the savory, bready items or cookies. I was craving bubble tea and sweets but did not want to try all the way to Bergen County. When I searched I found the spot, which I didn't know opened up so close to me. My brother and I checked it out and I'm so happy we did. We went a little too happy when we went. We got the blueberry coconut cake, black sesame roll, matcha cookies, coconut cream bread, matcha cake roll plus matcha bubble tea and the bubble tea with pudding. We shared with other family members because we were so excited there's a place so close to home. The cakes were so moist and fluffy. They were the perfect texture. The best part, the bubble tea is honestly the best bubble tea in the morris county area. No need to drive to bergen anymore when there's a spot right here. I opted for the blueberry coconut cake and the Napoleon (after great debate.. Everything looks delicious!) and what I got was FANTASTIC. The blueberry cake was so fluffy and light, the perfect amount of moisture and the sweet blueberry topping and layers were an excellent fresh flavor. The napoleon is probably the best Napoleon I've ever had?! For one, it was MASSIVE. Like, easily feed 4 people off of one dessert. Then, this thing is CRUNCHY. So many times I've had Napoleons that are soggy and hard to cut through because how soggy the flaky layers got. This thing was INCREDIBLY flakey and crispy! Even after hours! Even the next day! Not only that but as an added bonus, the creme in the middle actually had walnuts in it. Definitely not a typical addition to a Napoleon, but very good! The crunchy nutty flavor went really well with the lightly sweet cream and the flakey layers. The pastries are also VERY reasonably priced. Most things are in the $3-5 dollar range and very large for the price. Not to mention the QUALITY! Seriously, there were so many other treats here that caught my eye that I had to stop myself from getting, but I definitely want to come back and try it all. This cafe/bakery offers excellent goods and service rivaling the best patisseries in New York City. This is a value-added experience. The owner took the time to explain the baked goods and offer recommendations. We tried the Japanese cheesecake and chocolate mousse cake - both were light in texture and bold in taste. The latter had a thin chocolate topping fun to break through enhancing the chocolate flavor. The almond cookies were yummy, relying on almond flour rather than extract for flavor. The egg custard was creamy and luscious and the chiffon cake buttery and light. Everything is beautifully displayed and, for take-out, packaged in a way to remind us that we eat with our eyes first. So i went in for a bubble tea.. and as i arrived, i noticed they have displace of bread and pastry so i took a look.. they have pretty amazing collection of bread and pastry... some are individually wrapped and some are not... there's also a lady there to help out if you have questions and help you to pick out the bread from the displace.. I didn't purchase any bread because i really just want the bubble tea, but maybe next time... but i have to say, the price is a little high... hopefully the taste will justify the price.. :) To my bubble tea, i ordered the brown sugar bubble tea, the bubble is warm and chewy, and the taste is pretty good... but as the bubble got cold, the bubble became hard which i expected.. I miss living near Chinatown in NYC for the bakeries, but this place fills the void a wee bit. It is a very very small bakery, and prices are very high compared to Chinatown. That being said, their cakes are so light and fluffy. I am only docking a star for a few reasons: lack of variety, red bean rolls (the beans were whole inside), and pricing. I am half Chinese and it's a known fact that Chinese baked goods aren't as well known as French and Italian baked goods, which I'm also a lover of. This place has the most authentic flavor, cloud-like and light-as-air texture that Chinese breads and buns are known for. And to boot, they are NOT obnoxiously sweet, no artificial taste and use real ingredients. I'm not exaggerating when I say that my husband and I are here 3-4 times per week. They're baked goods are always fresh, delish, staff are beyond nice, they provide tongs, trays, hand sanitizers and they well gloves and masks while also having a lucite glass by the register as well. Our faves are their custard, garlic creme bread, blueberry cream cheese bread, milk bread with grape, and chocolate and matcha rolls.
