We've been coming here for a number of years and enjoy it consistently. The menu is extensive from noodle dishes, to Sechuan, and Taiwanese selections. The homemade DanDan noodles were our favorite, which are served with ground pork in a spicy peanut sauce. We also got the three cup chicken which was so good, with a sweet, licorice-like glaze. Some other favorites were the black pepper chicken and the long hot chicken, if you enjoy spice. BEVERAGE: Lychee Martini Perfectly chilled and balanced, complete with a whole lychee garnish. FOOD: Dan Dan Noodles We got it plain but proteins were available. Thicker noodles coated in a thick peanut-flavored sauce with a little kick of heat. Very good but I'd definitely add either chicken or tofu to break up the carbs. Dry Pot Dish Served in a steel wok, we opted for chicken which was super tender. Very flavorful dish but it wasn't presented sizzling as the menu stated. Taiwanese Beef Noodle Soup If you're a ramen fan and want something different, I think you'll love this as much as I did. A generous amount of thick noodles (available hand-ripped flat noodles are a $1 option), chunky slices of tender and fatty beef swimming in a savory and slightly sour dark-hued broth. Ordered takeout while visiting from out of town. The ordering process was quick and seamless and everything was ready quicker then expected. Unfortunately the experience at pickup wasn't the best. I asked if they had included utensils and the gentleman at the counter said no. I asked for some since I was bringing the food back to my hotel and wouldn't have anything to eat with. He was pretty dismissive and didn't seem to want to give me anything. (I also didn't get any napkins.) Just a little strange when ordering takeout, utensils should be included right? Or at the very least be readily given out when requested? He begrudgingly gave me 2 pairs of chopsticks and a fork, said he ran out of spoons. I didn't notice the lack of napkins until I got back. Now for the food. We ordered dan dan noodles, a chicken lo mein, and Taiwanese minced pork rice. The noodle dishes were decent but the lo mein was a bit too al dente for our liking...especially for our young son. Didn't get a chance to eat the rice because we were all too full from the noodles. Appreciate the generous portions at least. Will see if the rice will make it home safely with us and reheats well. Can't speak on the ambience. Wasn't in there long enough to really look around. My wife and I have been coming to Dan Dan Noodle since 2017, and it's remained one of our most reliable go-to spots in the city. The food is consistently strong, and the signature dan dan noodles are a must-order. We also tend to get the chicken potstickers, scallion pancake, kung pao chicken, and dry pot beef, along with white rice for the table. It's a menu that rewards repeat visits. We've had both takeout and dine-in here, and we definitely prefer dining in. The food is at its best when it comes straight out of the kitchen. The staff is always friendly, helpful, and kind without being overbearing. For seating, we prefer the cozy but small upstairs dining area, so making a reservation on OpenTable is usually a good idea. There are a few high-top tables downstairs near the kitchen and windows, which are also great, but if you prefer a quieter or cozier spot, we think the upstairs is best. They also offer a happy hour with good prices, and overall, the value for the food quality is excellent. We often bring out-of-town guests, and it's always a hit. Sichuan cuisine remains distinct from typical American Chinese, which helps Dan Dan stand out. We've also noticed their Ardmore location, which appears to be a strong alternative. Everything was so hot fresh and delicious and brought out to our table and a very timely manner. My absolute favorites were the dumplings in chili oil and the Sichaun Chicken brought out in a sizzling pot. Food was to die for! Service was fast and efficient. Vibe and atmosphere was every low key and modern! Place didn't look as clean as it should be. I was only disappointed that I asked the server what desserts they have as it was a friends birthday and he said they had none. So if celebrating bring your own dessert! A fellow Eliter took me here. I had the tea cold because it was so hot outside but this tea tastes better hot definitely. I wanted something not water. I also got a noodle dish to take home because I couldn't eat at the time I was visiting the restaurant. This is apparently a Taiwanese restaurant which is my heritage. The ripped beef in this is a familiar meat I have had at home and abroad but didn't think I would experience it at an American Asian restaurant. It is a real nice touch and they marinated this dish well. I feel like they could easily mess up the ripped beef if they didn't cook it properly. "Ripped beef" I don't believe is a proper translation. Maybe "braised beef" but I am not sure. They may also have this at Margaret Kuo's in Media. 10/10!! This place was absolutely delicious! We walked in at around 8:30pm on a Thu knowing they would close at 10pm. So I wasn't expecting great food or service so late. It was our first time and Elija our server was nice and friendly, gave us great recommendations. We didn't know how the portions were and after a long day (our flight to Philly had been delayed) we were starving. We wanted to order various items but even Elija suggested to go with the first 3 items and see how it goes. And sure enough it was plenty and enough for the two of us. All three items we ordered, the string beans, the dumplings in chili oil, and the dry pot (beef) that comes with rice were amazing in flavor, just perfect. I cannot even begin to express how excited I was to find myself outside of this restaurant. It is a very small storefront along road construction that didn't look inviting from the outside, but once you step inside it is cozy with a cool Vibe. We were seated immediately despite no reservation on a weekend night. We quickly ordered the chili wontons and Jing Jiang Pork. I lived in China for a year and a half so my heart soared to see this dish. It is my favorite!! They more than did the dish justice and I will try to get back for a visit to Philly just to have it again! Maybe next time I will get the beef instead. The chili wontons weren't really all that fantastic. The chili oil had no heat and the wontons weren't well spiced and the meat was overworked and cooked, but they were alright. Just ok. These noodles were SO GOOD! I cannot stress that enough, quite possibly the best I've had in my life. That has to be said up front! Our friends brought us here while we visited as their favorite and it's clear as to why, the entire experience was spot on!! Highly suggest reservations as they filled up very quick! By the time we were finished eating the area that I took a photo of was filled with people. They have a full service bar that was able to meet my needs for drinks! History of Present Indulgence: I was in Philly for a few days and needed a place for lunch near my hotel. After finding Dan Dan's menu on Yelp, I decided to give it a try--and I'm glad I did! Physical Exam: Food - They serve fantastic classic Sichuan dishes, including a fish swimming in chili oil that I devoured all on my own with a side of rice. Everything I tried was delicious, though funny enough, the dan dan noodles themselves were my least favorite--not bad, just not a standout compared to the rest of the menu. When I brought friends the next day, we shared even more dishes, and all of them were hits. Some of my personal recs: - The Pork Belly in Sweet Garlic Chili Oil - Dumplings in Chili Oil - Cumin Lamb Hand-Ripped Noodles - Vegetarian String Beans - Dry Pot Dish - Green Peppercorn Hot Sauce Dish Service - Friendly and attentive, which is all you can ask for in a busy spot like this. Ambiance - It's a cozy space, with most first-floor seating around the bar, high tops, and small tables for 2-4 people. Upstairs, they have larger tables, which worked perfectly for our group of six. Assessment/Plan: If you're in the Rittenhouse area and craving Chinese food, Dan Dan should absolutely be on your list. Great food and solid service. There's also a happy hour that's worth checking out, with discounted bites and drinks, including a dealer's choice cocktail everyday depending on the bartender. Definitely worth a visit! Appreciate that they are so great about peanut and gluten allergies here! Everything on the menu was clearly marked and the dan dan noodles here are peanut-free, which is rare. Our party, some of whom have a high spice tolerance, actually found the two-dots spicy level (mild) to have a kick. Still very manageable but spicier than we had expected. Pretty delicious and worthwhile for dinner! The worst part is that the restaurant is crowded -- this often means a wait for tables (understandable) and delayed service (less good). Additionally the design is extremely poor with how they've setup seating and accessibility. A hilarious example was our last visit where you have to walk up a narrow aisle (behind the bar seating) to reach the front desk to put your name down and talk to staff. They had our table, except they were cleaning it -- so they asked us to wait because it'll be ready soon. But then another server also wanted to talk to the party behind us -- which is basically impossible and uncomfortable. Upon entering the restaurant, we saw no Asian workers or customers in sight, which was rather concerning to us. We wondered if the food was not authentic and was catered to the American/white taste. However, upon tasting their dan dan noodles, we were relieved to find the food marvelous and delicious! The noodles did taste a bit different, somewhat more "contemporary" and not as spicy/peanut-y as some other dan dan dishes I've had, but the flavors were outstanding to me. There were nice Sichuan heat (but not that spicy), tasty sesame/peanut sauce, ground pork, and all-around smoky/numbing/umami flavors. 5 stars for the dish. The Perfect Pear cocktail was strong and sweet. While sipping, you could taste the pear's "gritty" texture which was nice. However, it was served in a regular glass with lots of ice cubes. That's not how you serve a bourbon drink... 4 stars for the drink. Definitely bad service as some other reviews say. It was 3 pm on a Thursday afternoon, so that might've been a factor. I had to go downstairs to get a waiter up to our table on the second floor. I guess "bad service" fits the Asian restaurant stereotype ha. I stopped by for a quick weekday lunch - it was a little busy when I got there around 1.30pm, but I was able to get seated immediately. However, they did tell me I had to sit at the bar, which was a little bit uncomfortable for a meal tbh, but I get that (since I was eating by myself), they probably preferred that I not take up a whole table. I ordered the Taiwanese beef noodle soup. I always check if the beef noodle soup includes cilantro (I am a big cilantro-hater), and in this case the server told me there wasn't. But, when it arrived - gasp! - I saw minced cilantro in the broth (and a quick taste test confirmed it wasn't something like Thai basil or parsley or something). I let the server know and, absolutely to her credit, she apologised profusely, brought me another bowl quickly, and also comped me a drink, a gesture that I really appreciated. That being said, the beef noodle soup was not great. The broth was very salty and not savoury/fragrant with the aroma of the stewed beef. The noodles were chewy, which I liked. The biggest flaw, though, was with the beef chunks, which were consistently overcooked / hard to chew. Beef noodle soup usually has tender cuts of stewed beef that easily fall apart when chewing, but almost every piece of beef here was quite tough and difficult to bite into :(. All in all, a pretty meh experience overall. My interactions with the staff were quite lovely, but the food in particular left quite a bit to be desired. Perhaps I'd order something different if I were to return, but I don't imagine that to be anytime soon. read more

Assuming that the person that was by the host podium was the manager since after she shooed me away to sit at the bar she went behind a laptop. The service is pretty med. If the manager is practicing this way then it's acceptable for the staff to treat their guest with the lowest quality of service. Another guy was asking to be seated at a table since he didn't want to be part of the bar are. Honestly the bar was getting packed. I didn't want to be seated by the counter because I don't like to be elbow to elbow with strangers. But if you want to eat there get sardines packed on their counter as a party of 1. Honestly, if the guest is requesting to be sat on a table I believe they should allow it. How long can a person take to eat if the kitchen is giving out the food quick? The reason why I give three stars is the food. Dan Dan noodles was always fast and good. I've tried the duck, the spicy cucumbers, the pork belly(appetizer), and dumplings. They were all pretty good except the pork belly it was a pile of thin pieces of fats with sauce. I will say, the food comes very quick. The ambiance is pretty loud since I was sitting to people who just want to drink. This time we wanted to try something else on the menu - got the Beef and Tripe in Chili Oil and Green Peppercorn Hot Sauce Dish. The beef and tripe in chili oil is a cold appetizer with thinly sliced pieces of beef intestine. Even though there is not much heat to it and is only mildly flavored, there is a nice aroma and tenderness to it. I think it is a great summer app and a perfect starter to a spicier main dish. The hot sauce dish is one of their spicier dishes and while it is heavy on sichuan flavors that can easily overshadow other ingredients, it was remarkably balanced and hot enough to let the flavors coming through. We ordered Kong Pao chicken (to be safe), fatty pork in buns and dumplings in spicy sauce. Having lived in Asia for over 30 years, we have pretty discriminating taste for Chinese food and usually find the Chinese food in the US to be very greasy and have similar saucy taste. The flavor of the chili oil paired with the cold crispy cucumbers is so good! Got green beans, stir fry long hot peppers with beef, rice cakes, and three cup chicken. Everything was delicious. Green beans were nice and cruncy (I don't like them soft). The long hot peppers aren't really that spicy. I have a low spice tolerance and they're mostly just a kick in your throat, but tongue on fire spice. Love rice cakes for their chewy texture in general. Three cup chicken was slightly sweet, savory, and very tender. My two friends also loved everything. Occasionally I get the rice with pork belly for lunch if I'm in the area. After a 17 hour travel day I finally made it to Philadelphia and was starving and got the recommendation to Door Dash Dan Dan. 16 minutes later, super hot delicious extra spicy Dan Dan noodles, chili dumplings and green beans arrived. The flavor and spice were 10/10 - there's a wonderful red pepper sprinkled on the noodles and the dumplings - assuming that's what makes it "extra spicy." Portions are very big.
