Tomato noodle soup with beef
Joyce K.

Came here for dinner on Saturday night (there was no wait) and tried their rice noodle soup - I got the tomato base with beef slices for protein, and the set comes with veggies and noodles. It came out piping hot and with generous portions. The ingredients tasted super fresh. The only improvement is that the broth was slightly lacking in flavor / watery. The service was efficient and friendly. The inside of the restaurant is on the smaller side but comfortable and they have clean restrooms. A great spot for a noodle fix in Chinatown!

We've been meaning to try this restaurant for a while after hearing about its opening. The menu looks impressive and the space is beautifully decorated, but overall the food felt a bit hit or miss. Overall Ratings Atmosphere - 4/5 Service - 5/5 Food - 3/5 Parking - Street Parking Atmosphere - The restaurant has a modern feel and is nicely decorated. I especially liked the personal touch of displaying photos of their customers, which made the space feel more warm and welcoming. Service - Our waitress was very personable, friendly, and approachable. She answered all of our questions and made us feel comfortable throughout the meal. What We Ordered - - Supreme Fish Maw Chicken Soup Rice Noodle (Just OK - The photo looked great, and our waitress assured me there would be plenty of toppings. Unfortunately, it was a bit disappointing. The broth itself had good flavor, but it lacked ingredients. I only got about three small pieces of chicken. For the price, it did not feel worth it.) - Beef Tripe Sauce Noodle (Very good - This dish was surprisingly flavorful and generously loaded with toppings. Definitely the highlight of the meal.) Final Thoughts - For noodle soups specifically, there are much better options in the area that offer stronger flavors and better value. While this place has a nice atmosphere and great service, I would likely explore other spots nearby when I'm craving noodle soup. That said, the sauce noodle my girlfriend ordered was actually very good, so I would stick to that if we came back.

Everyone was very courteous at this restaurant. Stopping by for a small bite before continuing our walk through Chinatown. I would love to try an entree as everything looked great but the appetizers we had we really good.

Noodle soups were a staple in my diet growing up, so whenever I'm feeling nostalgic, I always come to this chinese restaurant that specializes in traditional rice noodles dishes to hit that spot, because it tastes authentic. Honestly, I also probably order from here at least once a month, whenever I don't feel like cooking. One of their popular dishes is their chicken fish maw soup, which I love and would highly rec! It's homey, VERY generous in portion size, and it feels like something an asian grandma would make. The broth is flavorful with herbal undertones, and the noodles have a springy bouncy texture that pairs nicely with the variety of chicken, mushrooms, and tofu skin in the soup. Besides this, they also offer other soup bases such as Tom Yum (has a great spicy kick, my second fav), tomato (tastes like tomato hot pot), and ramen. They also serve stir-fry noodle dishes with a nice "qq texture," but just watch out for the spiceee. Before your food comes out, they provide free side dishes as well that includes pickled cabbage and peanuts, which are a good palette opener. The ambiance here is lowkey and chill - the people that run this place are very friendly, and if you're not familiar with their dishes they will explain it to you.

Mala Beef, Fish Slices with Rice Noodles This super hit the spot. Each soup was chock full of goodies, from wood ear mushrooms to tofu to corn and more. And the beef and fish were so so tender and excellent. The flavors of both soups were on point! I think mine was with the beef brisket (either that or the beef slices). The rice noodles were decent and definitely appeal to many people. Not my personal favorite for noodles, but they work for this place!!

Was able to stop in by myself on a very cold day to warm up. It's a pretty cozy cafe setting inside and you're greeted and sat quick. Free kaiweicai (small bowl "appetizer" to start the meal) is brought over of cabbage and peanuts. Ordered the mala spicy beef shank noodle soup and wood ear black fungus garlic salad. Both very tasty. The mala spicy broth was the perfect balance of hot and numbing, it warmed up my taste buds and my temperature. It also had corn, enoki mushroom, bok choy, tripe, and tofu pieces in it. You can customize and add other things to your soup if you want. Service was great and helpful, and good value from the menu. Great spot for lunch or dinner, thanks.

10/10. To preface, this type of chicken soup is classic-- I grew up with its flavor from a young age. That said, the soup broth was flavorful and delicious, making me feel like it's a blast from the past. The owner and his staff were super friendly and nice. They loved talking to us. Their service was top notch!

Solid place for noodle soup. We grabbed the mala and the fish maw. I was nervous for the spiciness of the mala but I actually really enjoyed it. Sure it's spicy but not overwhelmingly so. The chicken of the fish maw was fine but I didn't think very exciting-certainly a cleaner dish. Both had a ton of ingredients and were plenty of food for lunch. Also grabbed the cucumber salad, which was a solid addition to start with.

I thought the menu was a bit confusing with what is included for a set price, but I went ahead and got a mala fish soup "as is." The bowl for this was humongous, filled to the brim with fish slices, bean sprouts, woodear, and corn. The soup was spicy, but did not actually taste like much. Rice noodles were soft - I probably would have preferred ramen here. Maybe this was in part user error, but I did not enjoy this bowl of noodles as much as I would have expected to. The appetizers were some marinated soybeans and really wet (sour?) shredded iceberg lettuce which did not inspire joy.

The fish maw soup is light and will be great on those sick days. Intestines were clean and tasty.

Cozy place, delicious food, and very efficient service. Perfect for a low key lunch or dinner.

Pretty good variety, good portions. Staff were quick and attentive. Interior was clean. Overall, I enjoyed the experience and I can see myself returning

Ji Bei Chaun is AMAZING. The steamed dumplings were soooo good and the udon noodles are to die for. Owner and staff are incredibly sweet- even gave us a flower to go! Could not recommend enough.

You get a soup, salad, and entree, so for that price, you're definitely getting your money's worth in terms of quantity. I got the drunken noodles with seafood for my entree. The noodles were really flavorful, with that savory, slightly sweet, spicy Thai sauce and all the aromatics you expect from drunken noodles. Unfortunately, it was VERY salty. Like, good flavor underneath all that salt, but after a while it was hard to keep eating. The portion was also pretty large, so instead of forcing myself to finish it, I took it home and figured I could eat it with other things later to balance out the saltiness. My bigger issue was the seafood. It didn't taste particularly fresh to me. There was a slightly sour, "this may have been sitting in the fridge since yesterday" quality to it. Not completely spoiled or anything, but definitely not as fresh as I'd want. It almost tasted like seafood that had been cooked previously, refrigerated, and then brought back out for lunch service. The heavy sauce and salt also made me wonder if some of that was being used to cover up the flavor. Maybe I just got an off batch, but I definitely noticed it. The lemongrass chicken soup was MUCH lighter. The broth was pretty delicate and lemongrass-forward. The chicken itself tasted like plain poached white chicken that was probably cooked separately and then added to different dishes. Not bad, just very simple. The salad was actually really good. Crunchy, tangy, and refreshing, and the tamarind-based dressing was probably my favorite part. It had that sweet-sour quality that worked really well with the vegetables. My friend got tofu instead of the salad, and that came with two small pieces of tofu with a sweet and spicy sauce. Pretty simple, and definitely a smaller portion than the salad. We got there early and waited outside because they REALLY open at 11:30 on the dot lol. Once they opened, you could immediately see how popular the lunch special is. Lots of people came in and the restaurant filled up pretty quickly. The staff seemed a little overwhelmed with the lunch rush, but everyone was nice and clearly doing their best to keep up with all the orders. Overall, this is a really good deal and the food is definitely flavorful. For $13.75, getting three courses and a pretty substantial entree is hard to complain about. I just wish the seafood tasted fresher and the drunken noodles weren't quite so salty. I would come back and try something else, though, because the value is genuinely hard to beat.

The menu is mostly the same, so you know what you're getting. I actually came here for the University City Dine With Us deal, and honestly, 3 courses for $20 is a great deal, especially because they still give you those VERY generous Sang Kee portions. You definitely won't leave hungry. The University City location is newer and has a lot more seating, unless you're comparing it to the second floor of the Chinatown location. It's also nicely decorated and feels a little more polished and modern while still keeping that casual noodle house feel. The staff here were fine, and the food came out really quickly. Everything was good, but I couldn't help feeling like the flavors were a little more toned down and "white person friendly" compared to the Chinatown location. It just didn't have quite the same depth or punch that I remember from the OG. That said, it could totally be because I was ordering from the deal menu or maybe I just caught them on an off day, so I'm not going to hold that too strongly against them. One thing I really appreciated was the staff being so kind when my friend got stuck in the thunderstorm. I was waiting for her while it was absolutely POURING outside, and one of the ladies let me stay inside without making me feel like I needed to leave or hurry up. That was genuinely appreciated. Overall, a very solid location. If Chinatown feels too far, I'd absolutely come here instead. The food is still good, the portions are generous, the space is nicer and newer, and the prices are reasonable. I just think the OG still has that extra something.

We ordered 5 dishes among the 4 of us for a family style dinner. Here's what we got: Dry style crispy fish (IT IS GF!) 3 cup chicken Dan Dan noodles Garlic eggplant Chili dumplings All of them were incredibly flavorful and delicious. The dry style fish is the best I've had everywhere. Don't sleep on eating the aromatics they stir fry the fish in--the celery and onions in it are INCREDIBLY TASTY. The 3 cup chicken was crispy (it is breaded and fried to soak up more flavor), the noodles were bouncy and delicious. People were dipping their other food items into the sauces of the 3 cup and noodles all night. The eggplant was very creamy, with crispy edges and flavorful, but it was average compared to other eggplant I've had, which is always still good! And finally, the dumplings were probably the weakest dish. There is little meat to dumplings skin ratio. The meat is flavorful, but not juicy and tender. The chili sauce in it is incredible. All in all, a great meal with great people. The music they play in house is fun and early to mid 2000s. Great for a crowd.

I do recommend making a reservation as they can be pretty slammed on Fridays/weekends. The Srirachi wings had a nice crunch to them while still keeping the chicken juicy inside. It would've been nice to have an even amount of wings to drumsticks though, as I like flats more, but thats just a personal preference. The crabmeat fried rice was amazing, a really good portion of chunks of crabmeat mixed in so each spoonful had some. The duck curry was a "Grandma's special" so a much bigger portion and cost - but reasonable. The duck wasnt dry and had a good flavor throughout, not relying on the curry to give taste. The curry also had a hint of sweetness to it which complements the greasiness of the duck. The papaya salad felt very refreshing - we got it at level one as to not overpower our taste buds with all the other food. I did get some chili pepper on the side to add in later. My one recommendation is having Thai peppers as an option instead of dried chili flakes. I much prefer the taste of fresh Thai pepper to add the extra heat. The mango sticky rice is always a favorite. The mango is soft and ripe, the right amount of sweetness. They also mix pandan in with the sticky rice for a more impactful umami (Im also a big advocate for pandan in desserts).

It is a little tight inside and definitely gets busy, even during lunch and I do think it's a little on the pricier side. But for me, the food makes up for it. This feels like one of those local spots you're glad you finally tried and immediately start thinking about what you're ordering next time. Definitely a 10/10 for me.
