I had to take a star off because the service was poor. Service was slow on a day when the restaurant itself wasn't even that busy! Our waitress seemed to forget a lot of things we asked for like our lychee drink, the appetizer came out way later than our entrees, etc. Despite that, the food was good! We ordered the massaman curry, pad see ew, and basil rice with peanut sauce on the side + curry puffs. The only complaint was that the rice was sort of spicy but other than that, everything was perfect -- rich in flavor and delicious! If the service is spruced up, this place would be 5 stars! The ambiance is very nice, too!
The food was super delicious and very authentic! My favorite dish was the pad see eww and the curry chicken dish. The perfect spice level and cooked With fresh ingredients! So why only 3 stars? The staff was not attentive. They were often socializing and laughing instead of taking care of customers.
Came here while we were craving some good Thai food and was able to get a reservation online quite easily. Once we arrived, it was super busy and it took a bit of time to get our orders in. We ordered a variety of dishes to try out, starting with the crispy chive cakes. I love chive cakes, but these were much softer than I anticipated. I still loved the flavor and dipping sauce. We also ordered a medium spicy papaya salad, but it didn't taste like ours had any spice at all which was a little disappointing. Then we tried the Khao soi, which was a gigantic portion and very delicious, I truly had no complaints there. Lastly, we had the chicken satay skewers, delicious especially with the two sauces they included with it, and their duck, an absolutely amazing and giant dish that was covered with a tangy and sweet sauce. Overall, we enjoyed the food a lot; the only reason I'm rating this lower was the service. Our bill had two extra dishes on it that we didn't order, making our total super high. We asked to have these removed, but then they told us that we had already ordered these dishes and that they were on the way. We clarified a second time that we didn't order these two dishes and then finally got the right receipt. Our server was sweet and apologized, but for their high menu prices, I wasn't too thrilled with this experience.
Located in the heart of downtown, this restaurant is easy to walk to if you're staying in the area. Pad See Ew with chicken - This is my go-to dish at other Thai restaurants since I can't do spicy items. I got the zero spice level (they offer 0-5) and it was delicious. There was enough food for me to have leftovers. The noodles were nice and soft! Mango Sticky Rice - This was pretty and tasty. My only challenge with this dish was trying to cut the strips of mango with a spoon while trying not to spill anything out of the bowl. I would definitely go here again!
Third time going here and the food is always bomb! This pretty and aesthetic Thai restaurant is one of my favorite go to spot for Thai food. I usually get their Panang Curry and Pinapple Fired Rice. They are so good, you can't go wrong! Some other must tries are their Drunken Noodles and Massaman Curry. Very flavorful and you can get it to your preferred spice level. For dessert I have tried their Mango Sticky Rice, which you can't go wrong with! For drinks I got the Grandma's Lychee which had perfect sweetness. If you get the same drink as a non-alcoholic beverage it will be a little sour but you always ask them to make it your liking. My friend asked them to add some sweetness to it and they. The service has always been great. At times they get really busy and yet the staff remain very professional.
Treated my mother to a birthday dinner date at Grandmas Philly. Beautiful interior, loved the decor and they even had some cool anime clips showing on a projected screen. Service I'm sorry to say was very very slow; however I believe we arrived at the start of their dinner rush so our server was in the weeds. She was pleasant, I just think it's important to encourage the servers to table touch and do silent service which is every time you walk past your tables you look for ques (empty drink, empty plates, straw wrappers, napkins and trash on the table), ask how the food is or if we need anything... Idk I was definitely disappointed from that aspect because I've been planning to give this place a try for months. Anywho, for the part that matters most, the food--This is a tapas restaurant so the food will come out as it's ready in no particular order; love that because I never cared what comes out first as long as it comes out lol. The Thai tea was top 5 one of the best ones I've had and I've traveled all the way to Thailand, so I'm telling you this drink is delicious! For small plates we ordered the shrimp satay which was sweet/savory and covered in what seemed to be a Penang curry sauce; they were just okay... Came out a little cold. The salmon in a basket was pretty tasty, definitely spicy but good. The tom yum soup was a 5/5 for me--Present coconut flavors but not overpowering and still savory, really gave a cozy feel while eating it and you can choose whatever protein you want. The crab fried rice was mediocre; and for damn near $40 I probably would not purchase this again. And last but not least the whole fish was the best thing I had there. When I say fried to perfection and seasoned beautifully I was really happy with my entree. The mango salad was pretty good too, just could've done without the slices of lime in it as it has the skin on it... would you eat a lime with skin on it? lol. Nonetheless, the stars are solely based on the lack of service I felt... the food I would've given a 4
Well I always wanted to try this place. Now I knowwwww I can make this at home but I was craving it and uber eats was calling my name but mannnnn never ordering delivery again. !!! $29 dollars later... a pint of Thom kha soup with chicken $17 and side rice noodle $5 ... with service fee. Delivery fee. Minimal tip. Whatttt?! I also asked for level 3 or if 5 spice. I think? I figured it would make it spicy. It was not. So I added sriracha - what I had at the office. It's a pint of thick sweet coconut soup. Minimal lil peppers n basil and chicken slices added. And a side of rice noodle I added in. When did inflation make it $30 it was good. But I def can make this at home and i have to , from now on.
Visiting from another state we tried this place as we were walking and it did not disappoint.Everything we ordered was on point. The ambiance was nice and the service is ok but it was the food that will make you come back. It was my first time in philly and im glad we ate here, didn't mind spending a couple ofhundredas since the food is really good.
I personally thought this place a little too overhyped. Our meal was well seasoned. We got the medium spice and I would recommend getting more of their spice on the side if you want to be more spicier than their medium. Overall it was good experience and quick to bring out the food.
Had a reservation for 1PM on Saturday. It was very busy inside. Service is slow because there was only one server. Everything was lukewarm warm and did not come out hot. I liked the flavor of the khao soi, but did not like that it was pulled chicken. Would have preferred a traditional chicken drum stick. The crispy chives were not crispy at all. The crispy stir fried pork belly was good. Drunken noodles were not flavorful enough, just spicy. Very instagram-able inside with the decor.
Was able to meet the owner one night while waiting on my togo food and he was so cool and nice. This is my favorite philly thai spot hands down! Everything tasted so vibrant and authentic. You would think grandma was in the kitchen. The place is beautiful with beautiful servers.
Grabbed takeout from Grandmas Thai tonight. Restaurant was super cute inside, would be a great cozy date spot. Picking up was super easy too. While we enjoyed the Khao Soi, the drunken noodle was just okay. Would skip the sautéed veggies, this is pretty bit or miss anywhere but wasn't my favorite. I think I have other places I prefer. However, would definitely go back to try some other things on their menu!
This restaurant is hyped all over tik tok so I went to try it. I think it's a trendy place to be but that's about it. The drinks were good and I quite enjoyed mine. The duck was small and a bit dry and not very flavorful. The curry was runny and thin so it slid off of the veggies and duck. The pad Thai was honestly quite small and tasted like any pad thai you could order at any random restaurant and it was also just vaguely dry. My biggest grievances with this place was the ambiance. I feel like they wanted to fit as many tables as they physically could in that building and boy did they. The tables are so close together and so tiny. We had and I'm not exaggerating under 3 inches between us and the table next to us and we were on the wall with booths on one half. The poor women go got seated next to us had to move her table on top of the table on her other side and squeeze between ours and hers just to get into the booth. And even then it was tight so her butt ended up on our table and I felt bad because she looked so embarrassed and apologized but there was nothing she could do. The silverware is ridiculously long for the small table they give you. We did not have room to comfortably fit 2 entrees on the table with our drinks and our forks and our silverware and our small plates. We also had a reservation, and our table wasn't ready and there was no waiting area. They didn't have an estimate of when it would be ready so they sent us out. We walked around for 15-20 minutes before they were able to seat us. They also had music playing not quietly and because of the proximity of all of the tables everyone was kind of talking loud to be able to hear each other. It felt more like a bar than a sit down restaurant. There are so many Thai places just within a block of grandmas I could not understand why someone would choose to wait there rather than go to Chatayee or Dara. I think this place is catered to look cool on Instagram and if that's your goal then you'll be quite happy.

I personally always enjoy coming to Grandma's. The food has always been delicious and I'm personally a fan of dishes coming out as soon as they're done. I do recommend making a reservation as they can be pretty slammed on Fridays/weekends. The Srirachi wings had a nice crunch to them while still keeping the chicken juicy inside. It would've been nice to have an even amount of wings to drumsticks though, as I like flats more, but thats just a personal preference. The crabmeat fried rice was amazing, a really good portion of chunks of crabmeat mixed in so each spoonful had some. The duck curry was a "Grandma's special" so a much bigger portion and cost - but reasonable. The duck wasnt dry and had a good flavor throughout, not relying on the curry to give taste. The curry also had a hint of sweetness to it which complements the greasiness of the duck. The papaya salad felt very refreshing - we got it at level one as to not overpower our taste buds with all the other food. I did get some chili pepper on the side to add in later. My one recommendation is having Thai peppers as an option instead of dried chili flakes. I much prefer the taste of fresh Thai pepper to add the extra heat. The mango sticky rice is always a favorite. The mango is soft and ripe, the right amount of sweetness. They also mix pandan in with the sticky rice for a more impactful umami (Im also a big advocate for pandan in desserts). read more

My daughter and I tried Grandma's Philly and ordered quite a few things to share. We started with the curry puffs, which were pleasantly delicious and filling. They were stuffed with curry chicken and potato and had great flavor. The Tom Kha soup was another standout for me. The coconut milk and lemongrass broth was flavorful, with plenty of vegetables and chicken. I also tried the salmon in a basket, which was definitely something different. I would have enjoyed it more if it wasn't spicy, but that's just my personal preference. My daughter ordered the curry shrimp skewers, crab fried rice, and crispy whole fried fish. The crispy fish was good, and we both enjoyed the crab fried rice. It had good flavor, but at $37, I personally didn't think it was $37 good. That was probably the biggest disappointment for us in terms of value. Overall, the service was good and the ambiance was dimly lit with beautiful decor throughout, we enjoyed trying different dishes and the food had some really good flavors. I'd come back to try some of the other things on the menu. read more

They were able to accommodate our party of 10 on a Thursday night. Service was great. It was 100+ degrees out and the inside was warm. I would skip the crab flutes next time as you couldn't taste the crab. The red curry with roasted duck was flavored well. I would prefer they used duck breast instead of leg quarter as it has less meat. Khao soi was my favorite and tasted very authentic. Mango sticky rice was delicious and beautifully presented. I love that they used pandan sticky rice to add a little more fragrance and uniqueness to it. read more

My daughter and I came here on a whim. We were seated promptly without reservations. Surprisingly, it was packed due to restaurant week in Philly. U-T was our server and she was exceptional. Josh, another server, also helped us as well. Service was a little slow, but given the circumstances of every table being filled, that was perfectly fine. Everything we've had was delicious. I ordered the curry duck on the go and that was delightful. Highly recommend and will definitely be back! read more

My husband made reservations for us to eat here for Valentine's Day and I was so excited because Grandmas has been on my list to try! I am so glad he made reservations because it was packed! We got seated and the hostess mentioned that since it's Valentine's Day we had an hour and 15 minute limit to eat. Which for us was fine because we wanted to eat and get home. It was super cramped where they sat us. You can see that every space in that restaurant was used. I wasn't a fan of the seating due to just feeling super close to the other couples. I ordered the chicken Pad Thai and my husband ordered the beef Kra Prow and both were AMAZING! The Kra Prow was delicious and flavorful. The Pad Thai was too good! I haven't had such good pad Thai in a very long time. We're so glad we came to try this out and we cannot wait to order takeout from here in the future! read more
Went with a reservation for 3 at 9:00. Had to wait out on the sidewalk for 20 minutes even though we had a reservation. They have a very strict reservation policy yet they aren't even able to sit you near your reservation time. Other than that the food was delicious and our server was friendly. Tasty dishes with tons of flavor, but service is definitely slow! My friends and I had a reservation for 7:30pm on a Sunday. We checked in on time and were only seated by 8pm. Our server was friendly and efficient, but our dishes all came out at random times which wasn't ideal. To drink, I ordered the Thai-Teani, which was perfectly tart and sweet! For apps we had the Veggie Spring Rolls and the Chive Cakes. Both were delicious! I highly recommend the chive cakes -- super crispy and chewy with a spicy, savory sauce. For my main I ordered the Khao Soi, which was so incredibly flavorful and perfectly spiced! If you're in between a noodle or curry dish, this is the one for you! My family and I were looking for a spot to have lunch after spending a few hours at F1 arcade. I found Grandma's on Google and it had great reviews so we took our chances and walked in. I love food served tapas style. I find myself eating less because I know it's being shared with everyone. Our server was Vlad. He didn't check on us much, but was a nice man. Not only was he waiting on several tables, but he was greeting customers at the front and answering phone calls. I understand he may have been busy. We started with the veggie spring rolls. They were crunchy and the edamame was prominent. I liked the dipping sauce they came with. My favorite dish in terms of shared plates was the Pad Thai. It was flavorful. The drunken noodles were a bit too spicy for me and the stir fried eggplant was somewhat bland. Lots of veggies mixed in. The portions were generous and everything was reasonably priced for Center City. I enjoyed dining in the lovely atmosphere and having a wide selection of food to choose from. read more

I am stoked to provide an update and am so glad I gave Grandmas another try. The menu has been revamped both in the form of items but also the menu book itself. The menu is literally a stocky book. It illustrates if something has an allergen which was a concern with my last visit. The service was really good as well, the server was easy to flag and was super sweet. We got a table for six around lunchtime on a Sunday relatively quickly, we had to wait roughly 15 minutes. Crab rangoons - you get 5 for $15 which may seem like a lot but these are the best crab rangoons I have ever had, they use fresh crab, none of the imitation stuff Rad-na mhee krob , pad thai, pad kee mao drunken noodles and pad si ew were all excellent options with generous portions! Grandma's Philly's spice level 1-5 doesn't just bring the heat, it brings the flavor. I liked how they had a QR code to pay via Apple Pay. read more

Nice Thai restaurant on Walnut and 13th Street. We made the reservation and were seated right away. The inside decoration is pretty nice and spacy. We are no Thai food experts, but the menu contains a pretty good variety of foods. We ordered the papaya salad (spicy level 2, refreshing and delicious); Fried Calamari (standard fare), meat balls (OK, nothing too special) and Chicken Wings with Saratha sauce (crispy and tasty). For main dishes, we had the curry noodle and Thai basil with shrimp; both are well flavored. One small complaint is none of their phone numbers work; one keeps on bring us to the voice mail and then said mail box is full; the other is AI and can't do anything and just redirect us to the voice mail number. read more
Came here on a Thursday night and luckily we didn't need to wait to get seated. I think we got lucky because on our way out we saw there was a line. We ordered three main dishes, the crabmeat fried rice, the khao soi and the ratchada duck. Our favorite dish was the fried rice. There was plenty of crab meat and the sauce added a nice tang to the dish. The khao soi was probably our least favorite - there was not a lot of noodles and lots of wontons that became soggy. The broth was also on the thicker side and was not like the consistencies we were accustomed to. Duck was great, was nice and crispy with plenty of meat and veggies. Our server was great and very nice. Atmosphere was ok. I think it would be nice to have aesthetic that pairs well with the food. For example, more decor or furniture that plays homage to Thailand. It seems like they were going for a modern look but it missed the mark and seemed disconnected to the food and experience. read more

The best Pad See Ew I've ever had! The noodles were so soft and delicious and the tiny sprinkle of fried shallots (I think) gave it a surprising crunch. We loved all our dishes and had friendly service. I enjoyed my Thai iced coffee too. Next time I'll try the chiffon cake & a cocktail. I'll definitely be back! delicious but expensive! One of the best thai restaurants i've been to in Philly, and it's so easy to get to being in Center City. The food is amazing - pad thai is my favorite. You can tell them 1-5 spice level and pick your protein ($20 for chicken or tofu but $6 to upgrade to shrimp/beef which seems a lot extra). The Thai Tea was so sweet, I would not recommend this. I would recommend the curry puffs! So yummy, but $11 for 2. The lychee martini was delicious! Not too strong, fruity, and refreshing ($16 though, almost as much as my pad thai entree). This place is popping when we walked in. If you are looking for a quiet evening, this is not it. We were welcomed with EDM music and Bruce Willis trying to save the world in Armageddon (screened on the wall). It was sensory galore lol. Family enjoyed it though, nonetheless. Food here is absolutely flavor forward. If you are adventurous and not shy from exotic flavors, this place is up your alley. Since we had a big group, it was nice to order and share via family style. Our server really pulled through and helped us navigate several request which is always welcomed. We had a few picky eaters but managed everyone's request. Space is a bit tight but it's expected with larger groups. They have booths and smaller tables. I would recommend this place for groups of 6 or less to get comfortable seatings. They did accommodate our group of 14 which was amazing on a Friday night. Favorite Dishes: - Papaya Salad - Fried Calamari - Sami UA (Northern Style Sausage) - Khao Soi - Curry Noodles - Crabmeat Fried Rice - Pad Si Ew Overall, family enjoyed the food, experience (was interesting but fun), and the service. Big lover of Thai food so I anted to check this place out. Inside is quaint and very cute with lighting, decor, and flowers on every table which I always appreciate. Our server was very pleasant and high energy. We made an early 5:15 Saturday dinner reservation and good thing we did because the place ended up being pretty packed starting around 5:45. I like the menu and there's a fun list of cocktails as well. I highly recommend the Hot Grandma if you like a spicy tequila beverage. I ordered the Tom Yum soup with tofu, the pad si ew with tofu and my partner ordered the drunken noodle with pork. The soup was phenomenal. Probably could have ordered it a higher spice level. Both of our noodle dishes were delicious and very filling for the portion, just enough for the both of us. Again I could have ordered the spice level for my dish a little higher, as I did 3 for mine. My only reason for 4 out of 5 stars is because after the food came, our server never came back to check in or see if we needed another drink. I also don't blame her because right as we were eating about 5 other tables were seated so again it was a hectic dinner rush. Really looking forward to coming back again. read more

The food and service were wonderful. There was a wait even though we had a reservation. We got the drunken noodle, papaya salad, and pad Thai and they were great. We got mango sticky rice for dessert and it was amazing. Very happy with our experience. The ambiance was dark and moody which was great. read more

The Panang curry was silky and rich. Drunken noodles came out with quite the kick, but didn't quite have the nice char to it. Eggplant was alright. Service was attentive despite the crowd. Not the quietest spot for an intimate meal. read more
Food missed my expectation so probably I won't come back. I ordered thai pork dumpling and was expecting those steamed blue flower shaped dumplings but they brought out these fried meatballs, and I confirmed with the waiter that this was indeed thai pork dumpling. This is my least favorite dish too, flavor is just off and also a little spicy. The chicken satay is not very moist and the dipping sauce doesn't have enough peanut flavor imo. The pineapple is okay but it is not served in a pineapple :( This place gets pretty crowded during dinner time I believe. read more
