Stopped in today on a busy Memorial Day Weekend. What a nice surprise to have really good down home food served in a classic style small town family restaurant. The sliced brisket was juicy without being to fatty an fork cut perfectly. Pinto beans were delicious and the coleslaw was the kind you grew up with, a little sweet and fresh made. All portions were generous and it was super affordable. The barbecue sauce was tangy and spiced but not overly hot. Try the fried corn bites...mmmmm. Service was slow do to the volume but the asterisk in the menu says it's gonna take time me to slice the brisket so be patient. Bathrooms had that made it myself look but were clean enough. What a great place. In business since 1966 this family style sit down BBQ is a real find. The open aired dining hall with picnic tables and benches are all part of the experience. I had their chopped brisket sandwich, homemade cole slaw and onion rings. The smokey flavor of the brisket was so tasty. The cole slaw was some of the best I have ever had. On Saturday, March 4, my wife and I met our grandson at Hammond's Barbecue to celebrate his 40th birthday. Hammond's interior is exactly what a Texas barbecue place should be: roomy, comfortable, nostalgic and relaxed. It was also very clean and orderly. As it was a Saturday night, the place was quite busy. There were several servers working and all were really hustling! Apparently, this place understands the concept of customer service and aims to please. Our grandson ordered three barbecue sandwiches, and my wife and I settled on the two meat combo plate with ribs, regular sausage, pinto beans and coleslaw. The ribs were large, smoky, and perfectly cooked! The regular sausage was tender and tasty. The barbecue sauce has just the right amount of bite to it. The coleslaw and beans were nothing short of incredible! Our server was Andrea. This young lady is an absolute, unfettered joy! Spend 60 seconds around her and you will feel like you have known her all your life! Of all of the eating places I have visited and 60 years on this planet, I have never felt more welcome and wanted then I was that night! Andrea tended to our every need, kept the tea and water glasses full, brought this "to go " boxes for our food (The portions are more than adequate!) and gave us a free order of cobbler because it was the grandson's birthday. I don't know how much money Andrea is paid, but it is not enough for everything that she does! We gave her a large piece of birthday cake to take home, and she graciously accepted! The "open" sign was turned off at approximately 8:00 PM, which is closing time for Hammond's. It was 8:30 PM before we left. I know that the employees were wanting to go home, but no one seemed to mind that we stayed late. How many places can you say that about in this day and time? It was our third trip to Hammond's and I'm already looking forward to the next one. Hammond's barbecue is a throwback to an earlier place and time in American history when most restaurants had great food, great prices, great customer service, and wonderfully positive attitudes. Y'all. Stoped in to this place that was packed on a Saturday and.... it was more than disappointing for the amount of food as well as the quality of food you get. The brisket was not only underdone but no Flavor the bbq sauce was odd to say the least. My daughter (6) got the rib plate for kids and the rib tasted about like a burnt grease ball. I hate to say that 50 was so ridiculous for the this bbq joint. It's not a place I would ever recommend to anyone. It was very bad. While on a day trip out to find some great 'cue, we stumbled on Hammonds. Well, not really, thanks to Yelp. Love the iPhone app! The barbecue isn't anything special, but the portions are gigantic and the atmosphere is really unique. Some tables are long, communal eating tables and others are set up for groups. The four of us easily found a table on a busy holiday weekend and were greeted by a busty woman that made us feel like we were sitting in her kitchen. She called us names like "sweetheart" and said words like "git" and "yer." That's my kind of woman! But seriously, the portions are beyond generous. Kevin and I ordered separate lunch entrees and I regretted it when the food was delivered. We each took home a hefty to-go container. If you are in Glen Rose then this is a decent place to stop for lunch. The highs - the service was good but not great (never refilled our drinks). Friendly though. - the hand chopped (ask for it this way) brisket sandwich was decent. They don't hand chop it by default so you have to ask for it this way otherwise it comes sort of mashed up with sauce already on it. Ask for the sauce on the side when they hand chop it. - the sweet tea comes in mason jars and is fantastic - the decor is awesome. Just awesome. Great job! The lows - others have mentioned that the potato salad and coleslaw are not homemade. I had the potato salad and although it was not terrible it was also not really fresh tasting. I also found out that their cobblers are not homemade. Kind of makes you wonder what is fresh at this place. - they don't make their homemade pie every day. We were really looking forward to the homemade pie with the hand formed crust but the gal that makes pie hadn't made it all week. You shouldn't advertise for homemade pie all over your establishment if you don't actually make it daily. This was the main reason that we chose this place. To say we were disappointed is an understatement. Overall - a decent place to eat but probably wouldn't go out of my way to eat here. Still, a solid cut of brisket (just get it sliced or chopped). I was in Glen Rose for an evening and had read great things about Hammond's BBQ on Yelp. I decided to give it a try... Hammond's is located outside the quaint historic Glen Rose city center. It's on the highway bypass that connects the town to other places in the area. Google Maps is WAY off in Hammond's location - it is not out past Fossil Rim Wildlife Preserve. The restaurant has all of the common Texas knick-knacks found in rural BBQ places - including the uncomfortable picnic tables. I walked in, sat down, and ordered a BBQ plate - brisket, sausage and turkey - and iced tea from the cheerful waitress. The iced tea was excellent but the sausage was greasy and the brisket flavorful but fat-laden. Shortly after my meal, I had horrible gastrointestinal problems. I mean really bad. Since the only thing I ate that day was BBQ from Hammond's, I presume it was from food that was served to me there (sausage)? The local pharmacy was closed but found some Pepto Bismol at a local gasoline station. Can't say I'll return to Hammond's BBQ - EVER. read more

i was skeptical to try this bbq joint as i can be pretty picky about bbq. we were visiting glen rose [to see the dinosaurs! and fossil rim] and, while yelping, found some decent reviews on hammonds. i couldn't say no to my husband. we were in small town texas and found a bbq joint that was reviewed well by people who weren't just locals. first off, the decor is perfect for a bbq joint. when i am in the mood for bbq, i get a warm feeling when i walk into a place with wooden beams on the ceiling, license plates hammered to the walls, and kitschy knick knacks everywhere. i feel like i'm at a place that's been around for awhile and housed many wonderful yummy food memories. our server was super friendly. and wasn't weird about our two year old pulling some of the knick knacks off of the window sill. it may have been nice if they were hammered down or glued, though. we never order baked potatoes when we go to barbecue joints but our server strongly recommended it. we ordered it as she recommended- fully loaded with chopped brisket as the meat and OH. MY. Hammond's is a proper small-town BBQ joint with great food and attentive service. The plates are huge, big enough to split. The turkey is well smoked and packs more flavour per bite than anything else you'll have that day. The fries are seasoned perfectly, but skip the onion rings. There's crazy crap on the walls like license plates and old-timey newspapers, and the tea (and other drinks) are served in mason jars, so there's enough character to keep you entertained, but there's not much wait. If you find yourself in Glen Rose for whatever reason, make sure you eat at Hammond's. If you're in the area, it's worth the trip. They do take-out if you so desire, but there's no real reason to sit and relax at the picnic tables inside; the waitresses are cute and take good care of patrons. I heard rave reviews about this place, so we decided to try it. We went in and immediately were turned off. It's very rustic, with license plates on the wall, and picnic tables to eat at. Not my type of atmosphere. We ordered half a pound of chopped bbq and half sliced. A couple of people were sick, including the cashier, which worried me. The chopped bbq was ok. I have had better. I really wanted to like this place, I really really did, but unfortunately it was awful. We had just got back from Dinosaur Valley State Park and thought this place had potential. My boys shared the kids chicken strip meal, which was $8.99. It came with 4 tenders, fries and Texas toast. Nearly one entire tender was raw in the middle and the boys were not able to eat it. The fries were bland and the check in was overly breaded and bland. I ordered the chopped brisket sandwich, which was $6.99. It tasted more like a sloppy Joe sandwich and was dripping grease. The bbq sauce was pretty bad as well. It tasted like watered down store bought liquid. I dont know if I'm just spoiled living in Dallas and having so many great bbq options, but this was a big disappointment and I will not be back on my next trip to Dinosaur Valley. read more

I don't get the hype. The food was mediocre at best. We ordered meat by the pound (turkey, sausage, and brisket) and we were so disappointed. We spent around $50 which was way too much for what we got. We asked for links of sausage and were told they didn't know how much that would be so we ordered 1/2 a pound. When we got it, it tasted like Eckrich store bought sausage, which would explain why we couldn't order by link. Sadly, the sausage was the best part as the turkey and brisket were very plain. My travels took me and my family through Glen Rose, Texas on Highway 67 on a Sunday afternoon. We left Plano shortly after 12noon and found ourselves at 1:45pm in Glen Rose, very hungry and hot from the road. Hammond's is located on the south side of the highway, and we pulled off of the road into the gravel parking lot. We just missed the lunch rush, so we had plenty of parking. Had we been an hour later, we would've missed lunch altogether as Hammond's is only open until 3pm on Sunday's. As we entered the building, the cashier/hostess was standing at a counter near the front manning the cash register and instructed us to sit anywhere we wanted. There we several picnic tables in the dining room, painted red and adorned with paper towels, salt and pepper. The laminated menus also stood in a holder on each table and my party of four each grabbed one and selected our lunch items. My wife ordered the sliced beef brisket sandwich, my daughter got the ham plate, my son went conservative and ordered a hamburger while I ordered the brisket and hot link plate. Service was quick and social. After delivering our drinks, our waitress took our orders and returned after a short time with our food. I gotta say, I was blown away with the brisket! The beef was not just smoked, but had to have been smoked/cooked for several hours as the smoke ring on the meat was huge and the taste immense. At some places, the beef isn't very tender and you can tell that it was barely exposed to the smoke of the pit. But Hammond's BBQ really packed the flavor into my two-meat plate! I had eaten half of my plate when I realized I hadn't put any BBQ sauce on the meat yet. The hot links were spectacular and the pitmaster gave me a nice selection of tender sliced brisket as well as some burnt ends. It was simply the best brisket I've ever had. The ham my daughter ordered was very good, but not on par with the brisket. The portion served was good and it had great taste - but even my daughter said that the brisket was spectacular. Obviously, you've got to prove yourself in the meat if you're a BBQ joint - but the sides were good too. Our table had everything from fried okra to onion rings and we were not disappointed with anything. Portions were fair - while not flowing off of the plate; they didn't skimp with the portions either. Service was good - never an empty glass. We left full and satisfied. Our server brought the check and instructed us to pay at the counter in the front. I left a tip on the table and paid the check which was reasonable for the four of us. They were limited on what meats they had and had almost none of their sides. Just both types of beans and corn. The beans were kinda tasteless and the corn had clearly been cooked hours before and just sat somewhere, becoming sad and dry and tough. When the lady said no coleslaw, I asked if we could have torn up lettuce with the side of ranch. She said no, that they didn't have salad. Hammonds delivered a solid BBQ in a laid back country atmosphere served with a southern hospitality. I ordered the ribs and they were very meaty with a rich bark and a subtle smoky flavor, the barbecue sauce was tangy-sweet and not too spicy. Perfect. The brisket was really good and not greasy and the sausage flavor took us back on a trip when were kids, they were simple but absolutely fantastic with a crisp casing.
